Vikings ‘completely undermined’ Week 1 success with SNF loss | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC

The Vikings last night were to use our friend Thompson’s favorite word kaka last night. The It just was it completely undermined what they did week one and I kept waiting because Oh, they were hanging around. It was the same story. Right. Exactly. Right. And and they could never get it going. JJ McCarthy looked overwhelmed. There was a drive where the Falcons finally were held to a three and out. The Vikings got the ball back and right away boom fumble. That’s it. And another field goal and it made it 15 to6 a two-score game. But there were six total sacks of JJ McCarthy. He was 11 for 21 for 158 yards. Not good enough. They need to ride Jordan Mason from the get-go. They need they can’t wait until the second half to activate the Jordan Mason playing because by then it’s too late. But he’s overwhelmed. The offensive line is not good enough. They need Christian Darasaw back desperately. Brian Kelly was out with a concussion. That messed up the communication. He got hit. Have a guy who was sufficiently experienced to overcome not having the help that comes from your offensive line. The offensive line wasn’t good enough. McCarthy wasn’t good enough. The offense wasn’t good enough. The defense was good enough. And at some point, the defense is going to be like, “What the hell are we doing here?” Yeah. What are we doing busting our asses trying to keep these games close if you guys can’t score points? Yeah. I I mean, I think we’re in early stages still. They’re going through rookie bumps and bruises and to to to add to it like you’re talking about. I mean, some of these plays I this isn’t JJ McCarthy when he got strip sacked. I mean, the right the right tackle didn’t block the right defensive end. I don’t know what you want to say. Like he lined up out right by him and he didn’t block him. So, the Vikings, yes, not functioning at a high level on the offensive side of the ball. Like you said, they missed at a medium level. No, you’re right. They they they missed Darasaw and then along with that the offensive line is making mistakes and they got some other good players on that offensive line. A little surprising that way. But I think also with JJ McCarthy early on in the his career here, yeah, the offense isn’t full systems go yet. I I don’t get the sense that um Kevin Okano can just open up the vault and go let’s attack and run every play in my playbook. No, they’re still working through some things here with JJ McCarthy. So yeah, that’s an issue, but it’s two weeks in a row where yeah, it’s a little sluggish on the offensive side of the ball to say the least. The defense one quarter has been good out of eight right now. And the Bengals are coming to town and then they have to go to Dublin to play the Steelers and they go to London to play the Browns. And they better get their act together or they are going to fade fast in the NFC. Yeah, they better. And JJ McCarthy is going to have to get it. He’s holding the ball a little too long at times, too. I think there’s a little of that as well. You know, some of those sacks we saw, yeah, there was nothing he can do, but there was a few others where, yeah, he takes some hits and he holds the ball too long. Gotta give the Falcons credit with Bean Robinson. He’s amazing. Michael Pennock’s good. I I’m just not amazed. And I’m and the jury is still out about how good this passing offense is in Atlanta. Right. We’re in year two. We had Cousins. We had Penn. Yeah. Quarterback’s fault. Well, let’s go with Penn. All that. But I don’t sit there and watch them or watch them on film and go, “Ooh, that that’s that’s a I love their offense. Look at that. That’s a disappointing passing performance for both quarterbacks in the 70s.” Man, exactly right. It wasn’t good. John Robinson was the star of the night and we got to give him some credit cuz he was freaking awesome. And this is the key too because week one coming out of that game where Robinson and Tyler Algier each had 24 rushing yards. Robinson said, “We got out schemed. we weren’t ready to attack the Tampa Bay front and Zack Robinson, the offensive coordinator, kind of acknowledged that. So, they went back to the drawing board and they came up with something that worked against the Vikings. It’s one of the reasons why I thought the Vikings would win because they didn’t run against the Bucks. They’re not going to run against the Vikings. And right out of the gates, you could tell, yeah, Robinson was operating on a different level than the rest of the players on the field. And even though he didn’t score, he had 168 total yards, 140 plus rushing. And that was the difference because when you can’t stop the running game, you can’t get your defense off the field. You can’t get opportunities to try to flip the switch on your offense and the Vikings were groping in the dark last night. Atlanta was clearly the better team. They just settled for field goals way too often and let Minnesota hang around. But good job, Raheem Morris. their first round picks on the defensive side of the ball. James Pierce and Javon Walker, they popped last night. That’s good news for Atlanta. Way to go, Falcons. Hi, it’s Mike Florio. Thanks for watching PFT on YouTube. 1. There never was any thing there with JJ McCarthy, it was an illusion created when a dysfunctional and already injury-riddled Bears defense completely collapsed in the 4th due to more injuries and exhaustion. Week 1 Bills vs Ravens was what two good teams fighting it out looks like, while Vikings Vs Bears was what two bad teams bumbling it out looks like, and week 2 showed I was right.

  2. Vikings are starting a rookie and are littered in injury’s center and left tackle is huge to be missing along with Addison cj ham and a few others things will get better

  3. 1:30. Simms you’re smarter than that aren’t you? The right tackle did his job! Jj has to either slide protection to the right or understand that he’s got to get rid of the ball quickly because ATL had more defensive ends than MIN could block.

  4. Bro had one decent quarter and people acted like he wasn't dog caca for 3 quarters. I don't think this means he sucks, but he's definitely not good now.

  5. The Falcons lost their starting center to free agency. Their road grader right tackle to season ending injury and his back up is out for 4 games. The starting qb played 3 games at the end of last season. The heart and soul of the defense walked in free agency. The defense is full of first year players. And all I'm hearing is about is how much of a disadvantage the Vikings were at. Give it a break! They're an NFL team. The other 31 teams that have to deal with the same issues throughout the season. Game 1, the Bucs handed us our butts, no excuse. They outplayed us. Period. The Falcons outplayed the Vikings… period! Stop making excuses.

  6. Lol I knew they wouldn’t give Atlanta credit for that dominant win. Acting like Jordan Mason would have made any difference with more carries 😂 then trying to make it seem like Penix played as bad as McCarthy. These two are predictable when they get games wrong it’s always excuses.

  7. I'm just here to watch your Falcon haters try to make the story more about the Vikings. You'll actually thought we were going to lose after you all overhyped JJ McCarthy because he looked good for one quarter. This is the situation that was supposed to play out. Exactly the way that it did. 😂😂😂😂😂. Rise up ATL.

  8. You said that the strip sack was not JJ McCarthy's fault because of the lineman. You know what JJ McCarthy could do in that situation. Hold on to the football. Yeah. That's the least he could do. You guys suck 😂.

  9. I know it's early but I think it's fair to say that JJ McCarthy, in all likelihood, is the worst quarterback taken in the 1st round of his draft. At this point you gotta believe the Vikings would be willing to trade JJ straight up for Bo Nix who they passed on to pick JJ. I'm not saying he's a bust. It's definitely too early to say that. I'm just saying all of the other 5 QBs taken in that draft have looked MUCH better than him and even did during the first couple games of their careers. I believe this "ankle injury" JJ supposedly has is just an excuse to see what they can get out of Carson Wentz. The Vikings are in a win-niw window and don't have time to waste it on developing JJ right now. Out of the 8 quarters JJ has played 7 of them have looked absolutely horrible. If the Vikings want to win this season and Wentz looks bad next week it's time to call the Falcons about Kirk Cousins unless they want to throw this whole season away on "development" that might not ever actually develop. Cousins already knows the system too and would likely look noticeably better than JJ or Wentz on day 1. Better do it before the Bengals beat them to it. The sad thing is if JJ is actually hurt that's even worse. If you include the Saints that's at least 3 teams out there already who would be better off with Cousins at the helm rather than the slop they have to throw out there now. Way to tell your fans not to even bother showing up to games.

  10. Uh ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh… The Mccarthy experiement is starting to look shaky at best. He's got the physical talent.. But its going to take time to learn the NFL like most great QB's they play behind somebody else and learn…

  11. MN fan here : wheres the O – line ? Wheres the pass rush ?
I dont blame JJ , hard to do much when their all over you .
Falcons had a good plan and it worked well .
