🔴LIVE 🔴San Francisco Giants VS Arizona Diamondbacks/September 15/ Mlb Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25
match up on the show. It’s the San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. [Music] Arizona Diamondback just about ready to go. and today’s starter, Eduardo Rodriguez. But Chris, he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I’ll say this. Every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans, in front of the city. And you know, this guy no different. He wants to be more effective here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven’t been great at home. I’m sure he wants to turn that around. And we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one. Whips it to first. And the first out of the game is an easy one. Here’s the Giants lineup in that cleanup spot. A key piece for this club, Matt Chapman. And Boo, he’s a fun at bat to watch. I mean, definitely a threat whenever he’s got that bat in his hands. But for me, it’s it’s all about the mechanics. They’re so sound. And when he gets his foot down on time and starts his swing, so much consistency, that bat stays in the zone for a long time and he squares up the baseball a lot. Raphael Devers stands in now and watches strike one. That one down the line and it stays fair. Now he’ll turn for second and he’ll pull in there with a stand up double. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. One out, runner at second. Will Thomas stands in that one off the mark and that is ball one. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. Out number two. Batting fourth. Third base Matt Chapman. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Matt Chapman getting ready to hit. Let’s go back. Come on. Come on. You can do it. First pitch just misses. And there’s the strike that clips the corner. It’s a good change up to hit up in the zone. I don’t think he recognized it. I’m sure he’d love to have that one back. [Applause] And that one is downstairs and the count now even up. Really good take especially with two strikes. Next offering is downstairs. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. got him looking. Called strike three and a fast ball up in the zone. A double in the inning, but they leave him stranded. And now the Diamondbacks will get their first turn at bat. No score. And we’re back. So, here’s the lefty Robbie Ray. What should we keep an eye on here? Well, this guy’s just been filthy out there on the mound. Hitters batting under 200 against him. And they’re just having a hard time squaring up anything, doing any type of damage. The only way he hurts himself is if he gives up the free passes and surrenders a rare home run. But outside of that, it’s going to be a tough job for the opposing lineup today. Heraldo Purdomo, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. And that one a little bit high. Out to short. Pajamas not in time. of an infield knock to start the inning. Well, from the time you’re a little leager, you’re taught to hustle out of the box and give it a full sprint through the base, regardless of how you hit it. And he didn’t make great contact, but the effort was there and he earns the base hit. Here’s Catel Marte. It’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate under the Mendoza line so far this month. That clips a corner. and one delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Absolutely frozen on that heater right down the middle and that’s a pitch you’re just not getting back now. He’s in a tough spot, especially after falling behind on a good first pitch. gets under and pops it up and that’ll fall for a base hit. They get the force for out number one. Wow, this is one of those plays that happens sometimes, but it never really should. Seems like he just got a bad read on the ball and the good throw from the outfield was perfect to get the out. This is Corbin Carroll. a bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. And that forces the runner to hold on at second. Two on with one away. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. Everyone’s trying to elevate the ball in today’s game, but if you can hit a ball that hard on the ground, it’s going to find some holes. Two on, one out. Next to hit for Arizona, Bla1 Alexander. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Late on that fast ball. Kelly just threw that fast ball by him. Elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. [Applause] Go and chew now. In the dirt. Runners hold tight. It’s a ball and two strikes. Here comes the pitch. And now it’s even up. That’s down and in. Jordan Lawler in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Marte on second. Carol at first. One gone. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Swings through it and that’s a strikeout. Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there. Just a low 90s fast ball and I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him, but that’s pretty much what happened. Very hitable location, but he found a way to just get it by him. Jordan Lawler stands in now for the Diamondbacks. He’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors. That one is absolutely belted. That’s back there. And that one is out of here. That should get the dugout going. His first homer of the year. And the Dbacks jump out in front. It’s 3 nothing. Chris, we knew this moment was coming for him soon. Yep. And it finally came. We knew it was only a matter of time before he’s going to connect with one just like that. It’s just too good of a hitter at the plate. There was a fast ball down the middle. I don’t think the hitter recognized the pitch, but once he did, was quick enough to get it in play with some authority. He got that up and out of here. [Applause] So, two down. Alec Thomas stands in now for the Diamondbacks outside. Next pitch is downstairs. Ray maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, pitchers, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. And that’s ball four. Tried another slider, but it missed the plate. One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Well, with this many pitches thrown here in this first inning, I mean, you’re giving the other team a really good look. He’s going to have to find a way to get some weak contact, maybe a swing and miss, get into that dugout and hit the reset button and McCann fouls it off. Two outs. Goes down looking. But the biggest swing of the inning comes right here. A three-run homer. It’s now three nothing. You’re dialed into the show. New inning getting started. And now the center fielder Jung Julie Rodriguez back to work. And first offering is fouled off. Ball one there. Straighten him up a little bit. After scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Right through there for a strike. Foul ball still a one and two count. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Swings here and blasts one left field. That’s back there. Unbelievable. Still able to come through behind in the count right there. This was a really nice swing. didn’t quite get enough behind it to get it out of here. But once it got over his head in left field, it was extra bases all the way. And now it’s Wilmer Flores. There’s the strike. Lee, the lone runner, stands at third with nobody out. Let’s get it going. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. Runner from third comes across. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. So, a man aboard and now the catcher comes up to him. Patrick Bailey, good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively in the dirt. Foul ball still 0 and two. One on, nobody out. A run in here in the top of the second. Got him looking for the strike out. That was pretty nasty. [Applause] Casey Schmidt, the next Giant to hit. First offering and it just misses and that one cutting but missing down low. Patrick Johnson behind the plate. Patty Johnson the sunboo, but I’d ask permission first before I call them that. Does a pretty good job back there. Occasionally, we’ll see a couple of sideways looks from players, but that kind of comes with the territory, right? hit on the ground. Might be two. Offbalance feed. There’s one. And that’s two. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. And this is now a three one ball game. Back here at Chase Field, we head to the bottom of the second and stepping in the rookie left fielder, Jorge Barrosa. And that drops in for a strike. Saying he wasn’t very sharp in the first, got hit around a little bit, just wasn’t able to locate particularly well. A lot of stuff with the fat part of the plate. Yeah, Boo. He wasn’t fooling anyone. It’s a tough place to be because it’s not always obvious what adjustments need to be made. Sometimes it’s location. Sometimes it’s being too predictable. Sometimes you’re tipping your pitches. He’s going to need to figure it out quickly though. The other way and that’s a fair ball. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Man at first, nobody out. Now it’s the rookie first baseman. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Ruer at first with no outs here. That clips the zone and the count one at one. And that’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike, with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground. And you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. Bows it off. Still one and two. Let’s go. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. And that one goes straight to the back stop. So a wild pinch allows the runner to advance. Definitely trying to work down and get that double play ball, but it got away enough to erase any chance of that. Good job of moving up in the scoring position. Now a hit could make that wild pitch really sting. [Music] That one missed. Eighth pitch of the bat coming up. And ball four, two aboard. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. Back to the top of the lineup. Now up next for Arizona, Heraldo Peromo reached on an infield single his first time. Singi, he’s got a history of coming through in big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots and a foul ball. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field. Next pitch is outside. If you’re a guy that can only hit to one field, then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust. But because he’s able to use the entire field, that’s why he’s so successful. That one ripped and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. One run is in. Another scores. Two runs in on the play and they lead by four. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night. And just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Catel Marte up to the plate. That’s in there. And it’s 0 and one. got him looking that K is his third of the game. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. He got three straight fast balls looking in the 02 count. Just a poor bat. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Corbin Carroll. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. First pitch misses. Still in the second already at 44 pitches. So some concern there. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Now this is in the air down the line. Gilbert on his way over. Makes the catch. Tags up from second and he’ll head to third. Up next for the Diamondbacks, second base. Bla1 Alexander stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Struck out swinging his first time. Misses off the inside. Ball one. That one fouled off. Two outs and a runner at third. Bottom half of inning number two. The next offering misses and that’s ball two. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Logan Webb getting ready to come in for Bob Melvin. Beck also throwing. Two outs. Fouls one off. Two and two. And that one missing low. [Applause] Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. squeezes it and that is that. But they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double. It’s now a 51 ball game. All set for the start of the inning. Now it’s the right fielder Drew Gilbert. Gilbert. Gilbert in his rookie season, 24 years old, a former first round pick in 2022 and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. That clips the corner quickly down 02 in the count. I think you got to choke up a little bit, spread out the feet. You don’t know what the velocity or the location of this next pitch is going to be. And that one lifted in the air center field. Thomas settles underneath it and out number one on the grab. Now batting left fielder Elliot Ramos. Here’s Elliot Ramos grounded out his first time. Line drive and foul ball. One out. Base is empty and ball one. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished to the right side and he’s out. Good fade and sinking action of that change up. Got that hitter to roll over. Two down, base is empty. Devils now doubled in his first AB. [Music] And that’s in for a strike. Two down. Nobody on and Devers hits that one. Reaching for it and brings it in. No runs, no hits, no errors. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Diamondbacks five and the Giants won. And welcome back to the ballpark. And stepping in is the speedy Jordan Lawler. Lawler. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. There’s a strike. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. out towards right center field. Gilbert sizes this one up and there’s one away. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. Alec Thomas now he reached on a walk his first time. That one almost got him. Here’s a 1-1 hit in the air center field. Lee snags it for the second out. Now batting James McCann in now. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. And that’s a pitch early in this game. He needs called for a strike. Struggling with command issues. He’s got to get a little help from the umpire. And another ball. Two outs. Base is empty. McCann fouls one off. And that one fouled off. Two outs. That misses the zone. Full count now. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. That’s a walk. Went with another change up and missed the spot. It’s not easy laying off that pitch. It’s designed to fool you, but he just wasn’t fooled at all. Jorge Barrosa stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Singled and scored his first time. That one’s in there. 0 and one. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. Just missed. Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit. Throw in holds the lead runner at second. Two on now with two away. Batting number 13. And now the first baseman. He walked and came around to score his first time up. check swing on the first pitch. Appeal down to first. Did not go. [Music] Next one misses and it’s two and0. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. [Music] two and old to count. Here it comes. Fast ball is outside. Well, out there on the mound, he’s got to go right after this hitter because you don’t want to turn this lineup over. This is the guy that you’ve got to get that final out, get out of this inning. and a swing and a miss. He’s notched four strikeouts now. So, it’s no runs on a hit, no errors, and two are left. On to inning number four. It’s the Diamondbacks five and the Giants won. back here in the desert. Start of the fourth and digging in for San Francisco. Willie Adamus and first offering is fouled off. All these Giants just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases that are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to hard ground ball. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Now batting third base Matt Chapman. Now Matt Chapman at the plate. He was a strikeout victim his first time. just missed. Adamus gets his lead at first with nobody out. Pop foul out of play off to the right. cut on and miss. Struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. And when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. Runner on the go. Pitching for a strike. McCann fires. Safe. Stolen base. You don’t usually see teams try to claw back into games by being aggressive on the base pass like this, but it’s still early in this one. This kind of tells me they’re going to try to tackle this one one run at a time instead of waiting back for a big three-run homer. One out and a runner at second. Top half of inning number four. On the ground right side. Oh, great stop. Throw to first. run, scores, but a terrific play to get the out. Well, he makes a great decision to go ahead and dive to stop that ball. Nice little flip to the pitcher covering. Those are those PFPs, pitchers fielding plays. And now it’s going to be Wilmer Flores. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. right down to shoot. That’s strike one. Foul ball. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Rudder at third. Two away. That one ran inside. Almost got him. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. So, the Giants leave one. They’re down 5-1. Welcome back. And they turn to a new arm as we kick off the bottom of the fourth. Logan Web. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. Logan Web. Here’s the Diamondbacks leadoff hitter, Heraldo Purdomo. short stop. [Music] First pitch and he just misses. You know these Dbacks doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. And here’s a stat for you, Boo. They’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at. It’s pretty special stuff. Not so good if you’re out there on the mound. ripped on a line to center and puts the squeeze on that one. And there’s one down. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte. Went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. Hard hit left side. Chapman over to first in time. Already two gone here in the home fourth. Hey man, four pitches, two outs. That is an excellent pace. Now Corbin Carol one for two. Clips the corner. It’s 0 and one. Sanker catches the zone at the knees. This guy’s pounding the zone. Hitters don’t have time to think in between pitches. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Way inside. popped up to the left into foul ground. Chapman makes the catch and that’ll do it. Diamondbacks down quickly. They’re up 5-1. And we’re back. And here’s the catcher, Patrick Bailey. Patrick Belly Rodriguez back to work on the ground to third. Lawler zips it across and the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth. Now batting second base Casey Schmidt. Here’s the second baseman Casey Schmidt. He’s 0 for one. Swinging a ground ball. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Now batting right fielder Drew Gilbert. So up next, Drew Gilbert 0 for one with a fly out to center. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. Was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Highf fly ball right field. Carol sizing this one up and there’s two away. Now the left fielder Elliot Ramos has grounded out a couple of times. [Music] And that’s in there for strike one. Popped in the air left field. Barrosa settles under it and makes the catch. And that is that. One left for San Francisco. They’re down here five to one. Back here at Chase Field now it’s the second baseman Bla1 Alexander. Ball one, no strikes. Well, these Diamondbacks really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. Highfly ball out to center field. Lee pulls it in and there’s one away. Now batting. Here’s a speed threat. Jordan Lawler. He’s already homered here in this one. Right through there for a strike. Next offering is in for a strike. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Two gone now. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Now at the plate, Alec Thomas. He’s 0 for one. In there for strike one. ripped on the ground to second. Throws to first. Third out and that ends the frame. And the Diamondbacks down in order. They lead this one though 5-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top of the sixth inning. And here is De. Yeah. And here’s a fun stat on Dvers. He’s at his best when he’s hitting homers and doubles. And by the time he was 26 years old, Devers already had over 150 home runs and more than 200 doubles. He’s just the 15th player in baseball history with those kinds of numbers at that age. Steps on first for the out. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Willie Adamus will hit next. The offense needs to start showing some fight against this starter. He’s doing his thing out there. They’re going to have to push back at some point and make him work a little bit harder. That’s in there and it’s nothing and two. They must have been looking for something else cuz he gave up on that pitch a little early. It was right down main street. Probably not going to see a better pitch to hit in this at bat. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Chris, third time through the order and a couple of quick outs for the starter. Yeah, he’s been very frugal today. Economical with the pitch count. Chapman stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Well, as good as things can be, it can be a tough day at the office even for the skippers seeing the offense just sputter. Not able to get anything going. Just missed. Struggled a little bit in this one. couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter’s count at two and 0. And that’s through there for a strike. Well, I think the key, I mean, if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Got him swinging. [Applause] Nothing doing for the offense that time. 789 two up in the home half of the inning. It’s the Diamondbacks five and the Giants won. Back here in the desert, well, we go bottom six. Here is James McCann. Web 61 righty 28 years old and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2014. Love how vocal the umpire is today. No doubt in the hitter’s mind, the catcher’s mind, and even the pitcher’s mind as to the conviction in the call. center field. Lee has this one sized up, hauls it in for the out. One away. Now batting left. Jorge Barrosa stands in now for the Diamondbacks. He’s two for two. swinging a miss and that’s strike one. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good and then by the time he gets in the hitting zone hard to get the barrel to it and he lays down a bunt and a foul ball. One down, base is empty and a swing and a miss. That’s the second out. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. And here’s the first baseman. He is struck out and he is walked. In for a strike. Went with the sweeper. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth. Oh, that’s off the plate. Pitch misses and that’s ball two. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Lined and that’s a base hit. Everything came together for him. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. All right. Purdomo in now. Takes ball one off the plate. Next pitch is outside. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Next offering is in for a strike. That one missing inside. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Catel Marte to bat next. So now two on and two outs. Not what he wanted to do right there, Boo. That keeps this inning alive. Puts a runner into scoring position and a chance for this offense to add on to their lead. First and second, two outs. Next is the designated hitter, Catel Marte. 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. Gets the outside corner with that one. Well, they say it’s the best pitch in baseball. Strike one. You get ahead on a good hitter as well. Gives you a little bit more confidence to move through the at bat. And that one hammered and that gets down in the corner. One run across rounds third headed for the plate. The throws offline. He’s saved. It’s 71. Picks himself up a couple of ribbies. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Man at second here with two away. Corbin Carroll the next to hit. One for three and that’s down and away. Just missed. Well, no need to go right at this guy. First base is open. He can hurt you. So, make him expand his zone. If he doesn’t, give him a walk. [Music] And ball four, two aboard. Bell just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging it something out of the zone. Blaze Alexander now at the plate. 0 for three in this one. That misses one and0. Two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. Swinging a foul pushed off to the right. Marte at second. Carol at first. Two out of the inning. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. One ball, two strikes. That missed by a lot. Two and two. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Adamus. And that ends the inning. They put two on the board. Two hits. No errors, but two are left stranded. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Diamondback seven and the Giants won. This one isn’t exactly close. Chris, let’s go off script for a moment. I’m game. Were we on script? Never. Singing. Did anybody ever give you the silent treatment? I don’t remember that they did. I think they were pretty cool with me in terms of celebrating my rookie year. First home run came in Anaheim against the Angels. And I always love to watch now though, especially when that player is unsuspecting. You know, some guys they’ve they’ve been around long enough to know there’s a good chance I’m going to get the silent treatment. But when that player is maybe been grinding it out for a little while and finally gets that home run, is expecting the big lift coming into the dugout and they just stonewall him. It’s awesome. Man at first. And now the first baseman, Wilmer Flores. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Every once in a while, they’ll work that same trick on a veteran player. If, say, he’s been cold or hasn’t hit a home run in a long time, and that’s always fun when you don’t see it coming at all, and everybody in the dugout goes crickets on them. Yeah. And and that veteran players usually got a response for those individuals with one or the other hands. And there’s a ball. That was your worst start one year. Didn’t you start like three for 33 or something? Oh, it was awesome. It was I mean it was awful. Not awesome. It was awesome for It was awesome for pitchers facing me, but it was awful for me. It sounded like some type of deal at a fast food restaurant. like three for 33 or something. Down low and kicks away. Lead into scoring position on the wild pitch and there goes the double play possibility. Really good read by the runner there. His secondary lead. He anticipates the trajectory going down and gets a really nice jump up to second base. Now he’s in scoring position. He’s taken away the double play opportunity. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. So he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game. Now it’s the Giants catcher Patrick Bailey. Both for two in this one. Patrick Bailey. Man at second. And that is out of play. Activity in the Arizona bullpen. Anthony Dcliffani up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Number 43. A left-hander also throwing. He swings and drives one out to deep left field and that’s going to bang against the wall. Run comes in from second. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. Now the Diamondbacks manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Eduardo Rodriguez gives way and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now on the mound for the Diamondbacks, Anthony Dclani and he’s got a nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. One out, runner at second. Schmid getting ready to hit. That one finds the zone. Strike one. One out and a runner at second. You’re in the top half of inning number seven. Not close with that one. And it’s one and one. And a foul ball. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Oh, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death with two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate, you know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. Gilbert in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. And a strike. Fouls it back with two strikes. on the ground right side on to first that ends the inning and they limit the damage. Giants get a run on the RBI double. It’s now a 72 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Number 63. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score. Jordan Lawler. Lawler leading things off and takes a strike. Shortened a bunt and missed it and a count is 0 and two. Fast ball is outside. comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt and he’ll take first easily after the strike out. Now batting center. I feel like that’s one of those rules in baseball that’s tough to explain the logic behind if you’re talking to a new fan or someone trying to learn the game. It’s like wait what? The batter struck out but he still gets to be on first base. Yeah, I hear you. It’s a weird one. Plus, the pitcher gets credit for the strike out. It’s an over for the batter, but of course, no out is actually recorded. Kind of one of those just trust me, let’s move on situations. Swinging a foul out of play. Come on. And that one ripped into right. Gilbert makes the grab. One down. Now batting catcher James. Here’s the catcher James McCann. swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. Lee makes the catch. Two away now. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He’s saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. So, a man aboard. Jorge Barrosa digs in now. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. And that’s in for a strike. 0 and one. Looks like he’s sacrificed to pitch right down the middle for tracking and timing. Some good hitters will do that. Pickoff move to first. Lawler the runner at first with two gone. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away outside. Two balls in a strike. Hard hit right side in plenty of time to first. Inning over. One left for the Diamondbacks. But they’re still on top seven to two. And we’re back. Ready to begin the eighth. Now it’s the Giants leadoff hitter Elliot Ramos. Dlafani back to work. Just missed. All these Giants finding ways to get on base, but they still need help driving them home. They do have two hits with runners in scoring position. So, they’ve delivered in those moments a couple of times, but for the most part, they’re leaving a lot of food on their plate. Sends it across to first. First out in the top of the eighth and it’s Raphael Des in the box. De, the babyfaced assassin. And that drops in for a strike. D Clefani, a guy that features an absolute power slider, throws that pitch a lot. He throws it hard and gets a ton of swings and misses. Alexander sends it to first and a couple of quick outs. And I think being able to expand with that pitch as you start to offer at it that he can move it just a little bit further away. Before you know it, you’re trying to hit a pitch that’s off the plate. Now that’s smacked to right center and it gets by him around first and hustling for second and he’ll pull into second safely. Now that is third baseman Matt Chapman. So runner at second, two down. Matt Chapman up to the plate now. Three strikeouts already. He’s 0 for three. in for a strike. One-1 fought off foul. Runner at second. Two down and we’re in the top of the eighth. Next offering is outside. [Music] And he chases that one. And he’s gone for the fourth time tonight. So the Giants leave one. They’re down five. It’s seven to2. back here at Chase Field. Digging in number 13, first baseman number 13. There’s the strike. And that’s downstairs and outside and now two and one. That two seam fast ball is usually coupled with a slider away. And when a hitter’s conscious of the pitch in, it’s hard for him to cover middle away. And that’s where a pitcher can really finish off that batter on the ground to the left. And that’s just foul. Two- two now. And that’s outside. Swing and a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way. And it’s gone. He flexes his power with that swing. His seventh home run of the season. And they add to the lead. It’s 8-2. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Opposite field home run. And it’s a warm night for sure. Ball’s not being slowed as it gets up in the air to the outfield. So that had no problem getting out of here. Really nice show of power going the other way. Next to hit for Arizona, Peralo Purdomo. This one in the air right field. Gilbert brings it in and there’s one down. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter and a tough one at that. So digging in, Catel Marte [Applause] and first offering is fouled off. Swinging a foul straight back. One out. Base is empty and a run in near the bottom half of the eighth inning. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. That one almost got him. Two balls, two strikes. Way to lay off that fast ball up right there. You’re looking for something you see. well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. One gone runner at first. Now up next for Arizona, Corbin Carroll. That one misses. That’s five straight part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. So a foul ball makes it one and two. fights it off. He’ll see another double play ball to second and he can’t come up with it. Still able to fire over and save. Couldn’t recover from the misplay. Uh I think he just rushed that one. Great chance to turn two. And as an infielder on a play like that, I think guys can get a little excited and forget to make the play one step at a time. Could have been two outs. Instead, they get none. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Bla1 Alexander. That one’s in there. 0 and one. Liner snagged at first to second with the throw in. No chance to get back. It’s a double play, but the solo shot stretches their lead even further. Last chance coming up for the Giants. We go to the ninth. And digging in for San Francisco, Jung Hu Lee. Here’s some fun facts about Jung Hu Lee. You look at the fact that he wears number 51. Not a shocker, but his favorite player growing up, Ichiro Suzuki. ripped in the air left field and it’ll touch down for a base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Wilmer Flores the next to hit. And that misses and that’s ball one. Well, the leadoff man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. And another ball. swings and blasts one deep to left center. Back there and that one is gone up onto the balcony. His 16th homer of the year and they slice into the lead. It’s 84. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game. And just like that, they’re back in it. For a pitcher, the odds are in your favor if you keep that breaking ball down. That time he got punished for it. Hitter just did a really good job of staying within himself and getting the barrel to the baseball. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. That’s it for Dclani and as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. So out of the pen for the Diamondbacks, Jake Woodford. He’s into the game with the bases empty. Jake Woodford. And now the switch in catcher. Patrick Bailey. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Woodford in his fourth year, 28 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. rips that one to right and it looks like trouble around first heading for two and he’s into second with nobody out. Couple of hits in a row for him here. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front, ripped it into the outfield. That’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. So up next, Casey Schmidt line drive and that should be extra bases coming home. He’ll score safely into second. He’s got a double. Four hits in a row. And they’re really swinging it here. Ripped that one down the line and kept it fair. And even when you hit it that far out front, you still have to keep your hands tight to your body so you don’t hook around that baseball and put it in foul territory. And that right there was perfect. Now a huge at bat in this game coming up. Gilbert in the box now. No balls in a strike. No outs. Runner on second. Splits the plate and the count is 0 and two. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. Number 27 up and throwing for manager Troy Lavello. Number 54, the right-hander also getting loose. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. man at second. That’s hard hit in the line. Drops for a hit. He couldn’t run it down. Headed for the plate. Oh, the throw is over his head. Well, that gets him a little closer in this one. A well-deserved double on a great swing. Got everything going on time. He stayed balanced and he squared it up about as well as you could possibly ask. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. Manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Jake Woodford won’t go any further tonight. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. So they turn to their closer number 27. I think closer has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball and we see a pretty high turnover rate because of it. Every outing seems to be high pressure. This one included. We’ll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save. So digging in, Elliot Ramos 0 for four with three ground outs and a fly out that clips the corner. As a pitcher, you know the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. a base hit, it’s probably going to be a big run. So, you really have to execute on the mound with the tying run at the plate here in the top of the ninth. That one ripped but foul with the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered. He’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. Tying run at the plate. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. And now runners at the corners. Nobody out. The flip to the pitcher covering now. One gone in the ninth. That’s why you hug the lines on the corners late in the ball game like this. Positioned perfectly. High leverage spot. And here comes the dangerous Raphael Des. One for four with a double and fouled off. There’s the swing and a miss. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. Next offering misses and the count one and two. Man, oh man, I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Swing and a miss. He struck him out and they’re down to their last out. Well, that’s a curve ball that I’m sure he wants back at the plate. Two strikes, sort of pitch you’re hoping for. A bit of a mistake and I’d say in a very hitable location, but clearly the break was enough to get him to swing through it. So, it’s their last chance in this one. Willie Adamus, the next Giant to hit. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So, they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Now, one Next offering is fouled back. One strike away. That one the other way. And foul ball. The tying run at the plate. And that one’s a little bit low. Two and two. That turns out to be a really good take right there. But you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Certainly can’t complain about a lack of action in this one. A high-scoring game. Purists might not love it, but pretty impressive showing at the plate from both sides. Final score of 8-6 in this one. for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
