Welcome to a Tuesday edition of Locked On Stars, part of Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every single day. Training camp is just a few days away and today we’re breaking down my biggest storylines for the Dallas Stars heading into training camp including a top line which could consist of multiple candidates. What is that going to look like? Maverick Bour the next rising star for the Dallas Stars and a fun little game to wrap things up. Who’s going to play more? We’re going to go through some of the depth pieces for Dallas up front and on the blue line and predict who’s going to play more games during the 202526 season. Welcome in. Sit back, relax. We’re going to have a fun show for you today. Want to thank you for all the love and support. Hockey is finally back. A preseason game is now what just five days away, maybe four upcoming on the 20th against the St. Louis Blues. I’m also going to have Robert Tiffen on the podcast tomorrow. So, be on the lookout for that. first time he’s been on Locked on Stars, at least since I’ve taken over. So, looking forward uh to chatting with him. He was at the prospect games over the weekend. So, a lot of lot of fun stuff um upcoming here in the next couple of weeks. But, let’s kick things off with that topline showdown. Who’s in? Who’s out? We’ve talked about this quite a bit already. Will they go ahead and move Wyatt Johnston up to the top line with Rope Hints and Nico Rant in it? Do they want to move Roe Hints to wing? Do they want to move Wyatt Johnston to wing? If I had to make a prediction, I think Golitin and Neil Graham are going to allow hints Robertson and Rantin right off the bat to try to find some chemistry and see if that can produce fireworks. It was a bit hit or miss at the end of the regular season in 2025, but there was moments Jason Robertson was actually lighting the world on fire the last three and a half months of the season and then you had to implement Rantin coming over at the trade deadline and they had some special moments but it just never felt like it was rocking and rolling like a couple years ago when the trio of Hints, Robo and Pavvelski were at full flight. And really since Pavvelski left, they’ve been trying to find the perfect complement to Robo and Rope. Do they want to finally break up Roe and Robo? Is that a possibility? Maybe Johnston just joins that top line. They can bump Rantin down. There’s a lot of different combinations that Gulletson, Graham, and the staff have at their disposal. And that’s the great thing about being a pretty deep team. maybe not as deep as they have been in years past, but also maybe it’s uh something that can be a bit of a detriment too because you do have so many weapons in so many pieces, but not in this case. The the Stars have a really really good top six, but what is that top line going to be? My prediction is they allow Robo, Rope, and Rantin to try to find a flow. The Stars were not playing great hockey towards the end of last year. And you have to be fair to Dallas. They were without their best player in Miro Hastinet or their second best player if you think Mo is now the the top guy on Dallas. And we all know the impact Miro has. And yes, he’s a defenseman. And you may be asking, how does that have to do with anything with the top line? Well, it has a lot to do with it because Miro as a puck mover and the mobility of a defenseman to skate with his legs. He’s a one-man exit. He controls the puck on entries and he also moves the puck up to that top line. So, Mero can maybe cover up or maybe Miro can improve the chemistry within that top line. And you have to think Harley can do the same. like you have two top 15 defenseman in the NHL and without Miro and without uh some key pieces up front with Sean and whatnot, the Stars were having issues with depth. They had to kind of trot out different lineups and they just were playing really really poor hockey and a year that was long. They they played a lot of games. They had a lot of travel when you include Finland, you include four nations, all of that transpired last season. this as an opportunity. Now, we’re ranting in at the Stars disposable for a full season and Miro healthy. I think that can do a lot for that top line. Maybe that’s something we haven’t talked about enough is the absence of Mirror Hast and what that really just did to the Stars overall. Think about the shots on goal totals at the end of last year. The Stars were giving up 40 50 shots. It felt like on any given night against just teams, not just the upper echelon of the NHL, like to to Nashville to uh what the Ducks, they they were getting cleaned house against teams that were not in a playoff spot. Um, of course, they were struggling against good competition, too. But the absent of Miro is huge when you just look at the Stars overall defensive numbers, shots on goal, especially puck possession. I think that will allow this top line to really thrive and why I believe they’re going to give this a chance with Robo and Rantin. And then if it’s not working, they’re going to flip some things around. But that’s my prediction heading into training camp is Robo, Rope, and Rantin have have some grace. They have a little grace period and uh I think we’ll get to see it uh at some point during the the preseason games and I look forward to to seeing that. But of course, they have a lot of different options. Johnston, of course, I could see if it doesn’t work out, maybe they they just they try Wyatt between Robo and Rantin. you give wide an opportunity to play with some elite wingers. He hasn’t had that in in the past when you look at an aging Jamie Ben and aging Aghini Donov and maybe that unlocks Wyatt a bit allows him to continue to improve after what we’ve seen in his young career already. And you can drop rope down. Imagine if Matt Duchain’s your third center. I think you really like that. You could have Wyatt rope and then Duchain sort of your one two um in three hole and you give Wyatt some good wingers. Rope will add some speed because you are pretty slim especially on that left side. So if you get rope down on that second line, maybe second line center just because he he he doesn’t take long shifts. He doesn’t uh he doesn’t take a lot of ice time up. Why Johnston uh last year continued to play more minutes. He plays in all situations, too. Uh, Rope does to to some degree on the penalty kill, but wasn’t used as much um as Ro if I’m not mistaken. I want to say why it was probably third or fourth in terms of minutes um short-handed. I would I would need to to confirm that. But uh I I I just I I think with some of the the subtractions you had up front with Marchment and uh with uh Marchment Donov, you lose them, you know, Rope could play alongside Sean could play alongside uh Ben uh if if need be. Gives gives that line some some juice. So, there’s a lot of different options, but a top line, I think it’s going to be a pretty big story about where they all fit together. What is Golit’s plan? Does he have a plan right off the hop? I’m sure he does. I’m sure he sits at his table, his dining t dining room table late at night, and he’s written combinations uh constantly and I’m looking to looking really really forward to to seeing what that’s going to be. But I think hence Roberts and Ranton, they get a little grace period. Uh if it doesn’t work, uh I wouldn’t be shocked if if if Johnston moves up um and and maybe they bump Rantin down if they want to play him at wing. We’ve seen a lot of success with Rantin or with Johnson, Hint, and Robo in the past when they’ve kind of thrown them together if they needed some offense. Um and I wouldn’t be surprised if um if they wanted to even bump Robo down. Maybe they tried Johnston Hints in Rantin. that gives some uh that gives some extra juice maybe in your uh sort of your middle six if you wanted Robo. I think Robo and Duchain would be a fun combination. Um something I haven’t really touched on enough, but Duchain with his playmaking ability, his ability to hold on to the puck, Robo, right place, right time. I think that could be uh a a dynamic duo for for Dallas a as well. So, that’s one of my biggest storylines coming in to training camp for 202526. These are not necessarily in order, but that is uh on uh the top of of my mind with training camp a couple of days away. Now, Maverick Bourc should have already broke out as much as we talked about it, but this is the year, right? This is the year the Stars first round pick takes it to a next level and ideally the Stars have to have him. We’ll tell you more in just a moment. The next storyline for the Dallas Stars with training camp right around the corner. Maverick Bourke, the Stars next rising star. Had a decent rookie campaign. Not what maybe we were all envisioning, but he had some moments and I’ll continue to beat the nail on the head. He got better as the season wore along. And you’ve heard me talk about how Bour in the past and each new experience in each new league he gets to he has a year where it’s sort of a feeling out process and it just seems like he just takes off in the next season. So I wanted to talk about that a bit more because it it really is staggering. You can go to Maverick Bourke’s elite prospects page. Wonderful, wonderful website. Of course, Elite Prospects, you can do a lot of fun things on there. Of course, he was a 2020 first round pick by the Dallas Stars, 30th overall. He’s just 23, by the way, as well. And uh I I just want to read you his elite prospects draft guide little summary because I think it it really really will give you a great perspective and idea of Maverick Bourc and how these scouts saw him. His hockey IQ. Here it is. His hockey IQ is unreal. Out of nothing. He’s going to make plays that one that no one else can see on the ice. Bourc is very effective at putting the puck at the proper space so he can protect the puck. He’s so good at bringing defenders to him with the occasional head fake or a change of speed. He’s shown a real knack for learning defenseman out of passing lanes. I think Bourke is also a player that is going to benefit tremendously from the coaching change. Bourc is not a guy, at least from what we saw, I think thrives on the the rush game. Of course, he has that in him. Don’t don’t get me wrong. But I I think Bourke is going to benefit from this change in perspective approach for check foring system by by Gulson because I think he can be really strong against the wall, his ability to protect the puck, not afraid to get to some of those dirty areas. And I think the Stars are going to create some more offense on the dump and chase. They’re going to go win puck battles. They’re going to be more physical and they’re going to force teams in mistakes and they’re going to create out of the corners and they’re going to create below the goal line. I think Bourke is is really going to benefit from this coaching change. And now to sort of hit the nail on the head a bit more on how he continues to sort of take off in in that second year. So you can go back to his days in the QMJHL major junior hockey. So his first season was was really good. Um 54 points in 64 games. Nothing to scoff at. Uh but he was a minus 28 uh a minus 28 um in the postseason and five points in six games. So the production is there. Maybe not the the two-way game. We all know plus minus not always the the best statistic to try to measure uh a player, but it’s a staggering note when you go to his his next year. 49 games, 71 total points. So it’s about a 16point improvement in point production, four plus goals. His assist totals went up a lot. 49 games, 71 points from the previous year. He had 64 games played, 54 points. And then boom, the next year co shortened season, 28 games, 43 points. So well over a point per game in back-to-back seasons. And that plus minus really really improved as well. His final year in the Q inm 31 games he had 68 points just remarkable in 31 games in the 21 22 season. So there is some of his numbers from the Q MJH. Now his AHL numbers. So his his first full season in the AHL 223 with the Texas Stars 70 games 20 goals 27 assist 47 points. really solid rookie campaign. Had four points in eight playoff games with the Texas Stars. Now 23-24 season, his second year in the NHL. Boom. He just took off. Of course, he was playing with Stanov in two. 71 games. He had 77 points. So a 30point improvement in his second year. Six more goals. He went from 27 assists to 51 assists. 51. This is a playmaker. He can score, but he’s a playmaker at heart. You can look at his assist totals. That is where his game is is going to be. I think Stan Kovven more of a goal scorer, more of a guy that was gonna put the puck in the back of it. Bourc is creative. Sort of a duchain. I would say he’s more of that type where he can of course put the puck in the back of the net. You know, I think at it at his at his core in the NHL, I think Bour’s going to be 20 to 30 goals every year. if he reaches the potential, I think he can. 20 30 goals, but he’s going to be an assist guy. He’s gonna make plays. He’s going to make other players better around him. I think that’s where Bourke can be. So, look at that 30 point improvement. He played with good players. He had 11 points in seven playoff games um w with the Texas Stars. And then last year, 73 games with Dallas. He had 25 points, 11 goals, 14 assists. Some of that maybe where he was in the lineup. Some of it was he needed to earn some more minutes. He needed to earn the potential to play in the top six to play with some better players because for the most part he was sort of in a fourth line role and the Stars were not going to uh not going to get a ton of production out of the the fourth line. They were skating line uh but they weren’t going to provide a ton of scoring as the Stars had a lot of depth up front. they weren’t going to get a ton of those uh ton of those minutes um as well. So, this is a year he can break out a chance for him to maybe take over that third line center role. And that is sort of my ideal nature for Bourc and the Stars. Bour becomes a guy that holds down your third line as the center iceman and that allows you to really get great of them with the top six. If Bourke can be a a stay-at-home, that’s your guy. He’s responsible two-way player. He can add some offensive pop. He can play him even with uh Ben. Gets to play with steel a bit more. Or maybe you keep him with Johnson, right? There there’s a lot of possibilities, but I think Bour is a guy where you you think like he’s a fringe top six guy. I think that’s where I’m hoping Bourke can kind of get to where you feel like, oh, you know, in in in certain spots, certain injuries, we feel comfortable putting Bourc in our top six. Sort of like Blackwell was a couple years ago um with New York where they had him playing in the top six. He was playing with guys like our Timmy Paneran. Um Bourke of course different style than Blackwell. Uh Bourke should be a better NHL player. uh maybe not uh should be, but it’s going to have uh an opportunity to to be more productive. He is going to be more productive. I I think that’s that’s fair to say. I think Blackwell would would probably agree with you on that one, but uh that’s Ry Maverick Bourke. And maybe this is the year, this is the breakout season, and we shouldn’t have been talking about it as much as we did last year, but hey, we got over our heels a bit. We were a bit excited and it never maybe transpired like we saw, but we also should give him credit for for what he did do. 25 points, looked good at times, added some added some sparks for Dallas when they needed it. Now he’s comfortable. Game should slow down. Can’t wait to watch him in year two. Looking forward to some big big things out of 22 and the stars. So there you go. Bourc my second storyline. one of the bigger ones heading into training camp for the Dallas Stars. Now, who’s going to play more on the depth side? And we got a new bench bots as well. That has to be another story line. We’ll talk about that and play a little little game to finish out today’s episode. We’ll do that in just a moment. My final storyline for training camp 2025 for the Dallas Stars, of course, is is Glenn Gooson. And this is the lowhanging uh fruit one of u of the the episode. Maybe all of them are to to some degree just because I feel like we we do have an idea of of what this roster is. There’s not really any position battles to really look out for, at least in my opinion. That’s why we’re going to do something a little different, talk about who’s going to maybe play more between certain players. But we we sort of know what this roster is, but we don’t know who Glen Goldson is. This is a a big one, maybe the biggest out of them all. I think the Stars, they they took a risk letting go of Pete because there was a lot of unknowns. Glen Golton’s an unknown. Has he improved? Yes. Has he put some skins on the wall? Has some credibility now as an assistant coach over the last eight seasons with Edmonton? Heck yeah, he does. He looked really, really good. He’s done a lot of great things. But again, he hasn’t succeeded as a head coach in the NHL, whether it’s his first stint in Dallas, which is not fair to judge him on. We’ve talked about that. That was a very very dark time in the Stars organization. Vancouver of course Calgary uh although they made the playoffs one year was a first round exit. He is an unknown. He hasn’t proven that he is a reliable NHL head coach. But maybe this is the time. Think about it was a decade ago, over a decade ago before he took over for the Dallas Stars. And he admitted it was probably too soon. and now he’s learned a lot of things. Um, and I’ve said I’m very very interested to see where he takes the Stars. And I am bullish on him. I think he can be uh maybe something the Stars need because the roster is a lot better than what it was when he was here the first go around. He’s inheriting a really really good thing and now it’s just about not running it off the road. And he has a respect of the coaches, the players obviously. He has a lot of built-in relationships with many of them. You get Neil Graham, Ela Nazertine, just the coaching staff in general. It’s going to be this collaborative process. It feels like um and uh it could come back to bite them in the rear end. Uh like that’s a big question and for for some Stars fans that wanted to bore gone, uh well, this is one of the answers and one of the solutions the Stars found. are for those of you that thought maybe they should have held on. Um you may be looking um you may be looking to to to poke around and find any sore spots with the Stars early on. So it’s going to be a fascinating first few weeks and the and the first 20 games especially uh could go really really good and could go really really poor. So uh it’s it’s certainly something to to look out uh to look out for. Okay, let’s shift gears to just a a little fun game I wanted to to play. And it it’s simple and it says on the rundown there who who plays more. But between these two certain players, we’re going to do uh we’ll do a pair of of fords and then we’ll do a pair of defenseman. Who’s going to play more during the 2025 26 season? just because we sort of know the roster. There’s not really a chance, it feels like, at least at this point in time, without injuries that Ritzcoian uh or someone else down the AHL has a has a chance to to to make the the roster, right? I I think early in the summer uh back in in June, we’re like, okay, like there’s a chance for like a Ritzcoian to to make this lineup, but then they went out, they added Foxa, uh they went out and added uh Nathan Bastion. So, we’ll start here. Who’s going to play more between Colin Blackwell and Oscar Beck? Beck had a really solid solid rookie campaign. He is sort of ratic Foxa 2.0 and thought coming into this year, at least over the summer, like this was going to be their fourthline center again. But then they go out and get Foxa. And I’ve brought this up a couple times on the show. I don’t really know what the role is now for Oscar Beck. Blackwell, it’s pretty obvious. Good on the penalty kill. And Beck is to to some degree, too. But Blackwell good on the penalty kill. Plays hard. He grinds physical. Just a perfect perfect fourthline winger. And he can chip in offensively. He scored some big goals last year. Scored some big time goals, including in the postseason. Blackwell has a role. Beck, maybe he does. Maybe I’m over analyzing this, but I just I don’t see it because of the Bastion signing. That’s where they want to be. That seems to be the identity the Stars are trying to create or at least trying to shift from more of a skilled skating team back towards the the median, right? So, I would predict Blackwell’s going to play more than Oscar Beck. I think Blackwell’s going to play more games because I just I don’t know where Beck maybe fits in. And maybe that’s unfair because Blackwell, you know, he can be a left winger, too, and the stars are a bit uh they’re a bit slim there. Um, and Bastion is going to get some chances at the right wing. Um, but I just I I feel like Blackwell was such an underrating signing last year. Um, and I think probably deserve to play more after what we saw late in the season, what we saw in the postseason. I think he’s just going to get a lot more uh opportunity this next year. uh he stayed healthy which was great. 32 years old, provides a veteran presence, experience um that I think the stars are going to want, especially uh with Gulletson again kind of taking over. He’s going to want to rely on some of those guys uh because let’s let’s face it, they need to win games. And I think they may choose Blackwell. Golden may choose Blackwell over back uh to to win games because if it gets off to a really bad start and they need to win games because at the end of the day that’s what you’re judged on. Blackwell’s going to get some more opportunities in Oscar Beck in my opinion especially with Ratic Fox uh sort of pigeon hole. Not pigeon hole but he’s he’s going to be the fourthline center for the Dallas Star. So that’s my uh my first pair of players. Who’s going to play more? Let me know in the comments below. I’m going to go Blackwell um over uh Beck. Um I I just think Bastion’s going to play a lot. I just I I think he’s going to play six I think he’s going to play 65 75 games. Uh maybe too high on him, but I I just I think he’s gonna I think he’s going to play a lot this next year. Now, um on the back end, uh I’m trying to trying to find the someone to pair with this. Uh I’ll go Lquist because it feels obvious. And then I’ll go with let’s just go with Petravic. Uh Petravvic, seventh defenseman and and Lquist coming back off an injury. I think it’s obvious it’s it’s Lungquist, but maybe this goes back to sort of what I said about Blackwell and Beck. If Stars are a bit shaky, Lungquist taking a lot of penalties, maybe not showing any signs of improvement, and the Stars just need somebody that’s reliable and responsible, you know, maybe they get Petravvic in some more games during the regular season. Um, I have to go Lungquist here though, just based off what we saw last year because Lquist was going to play 60s something games uh easily. Um, because he got off to a really good start. He was actually a really good partner with with Lindell at points. He was a good partner um with Harley at points. He just kind of was playing up and down the lineup. Um and uh looked looked good. Looked really good at at times. So Lquist may be the easy answer. I just don’t think there’s a uh maybe a a a great uh a great uh prompt for for the back end. But I I wanted to do a pair of defensemen uh just because like Lindell Hayes can hardly be know Labouchkin to some degree. It’s not like Bishel’s going to go anywhere even if he struggles. The stars just have to have him. Um they need him to be um in the lineup. So it’s either Lungquist or Petravic that’s sort of fighting for that sixth spot. I think Lungquist is going to edge him, but I think it may be closer than we think. I think it really I think it will be uh because I just think Petravic’s going to get a lot more opportunities. I think he’s deserved it and um it it gives Dallas some more stability, especially if they um if they have some injuries. And you got to factor that in too. I think you got to factor in some some injuries. Some guys are going to go down. Petra’s going to be used and you know maybe it’s not just because Lungquist isn’t playing or struggling. Could be because uh you know, God forbid, you know, Labouchkin gets hurt. Um he plays physical game. Lindell, Miro, again, knock on wood. But um those are all real possibilities. So uh let me know Lquist or Petra. You got a feeling there. Is it closer than you maybe think or is it obvious that it’s Lungquist? So, those were some uh prompts I wanted to to bring up to y’all today. And uh hopefully it’s a little bit more exciting here to end today’s show of Locked On Stars. Maybe not and I’ll just completely trash uh the segment. But those are some of my biggest training camp storylines for the Dallas Stars 2025 starting on Thursday. Got our preseason game just about to occur over the weekend as well. Blues and Stars on Saturday. So, can’t can’t wait. Just really really excited. This is a fun fun time of year.
