St. Louis Cardinals vs Cincinnati Reds – MLB 9/16/25 Full Game Highlights (MLB The Show 25 Sim)

Hello and welcome. Thanks for joining us. MLB the show has action out of the NL Central. It’s the Cincinnati Reds taking on the St. Louis Cardinals. First pitch coming at you right after the break. Welcome your St. Louis Cardinals. First pitch moments away and starting this one, Miles Michaels. And Chris, he’s a guy that gets better when things get tough. Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. But coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati. TJ Fredel and that one pulled foul. Righty delivers. Clips the corner. 0 and two. Fouls that off to the left and we’ll do it again. That’s down and in. swing and a ball softly hit out of the left center. Puts it away for the out. Here’s the lineup for the Reds. This an offense, Chris, that’s having a hard time scoring runs right now. Yeah, sometimes things just aren’t going to click and unfortunately what happens is players press. They try to do a little bit more and they get out of their game. You’ve got to let the game come to you. If you chase it, it’s going to run from you. So, this is a team that just needs to calm down, relax, and understand that they’re going to come out of this. Noel Marte stands in now and watches strike one. That’s out to center field. Herrera settles underneath it and there’s two down. Batting third, shortstop, Ellie de la Cruz. Two down, base is empty. Next to hit, Ellie Dea Cruz. And Singy, we already know he’s going to finish the season with a new careerhigh in home runs. That clips the inside corner for a strike. Two outs. Base is empty. Now bullet to second base, but he’s got it to end the inning. Nobody left for Cincinnati. And now the Cardinals get their first shot at it here. No score. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here in St. Louis and today on the hill, Nick Looo. What do you got on him, Chris? Well, he’s allowing just over one base runner per inning, which is really good, especially for a starter because these hitters get to see you two, three, maybe even four times in a start. So, just shows you how deceptive and how effective his stuff is. We’ll see if it’s that way in this one. That’s a laser base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. He was all over that one. So much of good hitting is finding holes in the defense. That’s why you’re always thinking line drive into the gap. Those kinds of swings really boost your confidence. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. [Applause] That one is upstairs. [Music] and that’s through there for a strike. And it’s one and one. Fast ball is outside. Nobody out. Runner at first. Next offering is fouled back. Got him swinging. Bogey just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count off the two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Next to hit, Alec Burlson. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. One’s the count. They had a foul ball. Go. Swinging a pop off in foul ground. Makes the catch up against the wall in foul territory. Here’s a Cardinal lineup now. And Chris, this offense is facing a defense that is well known for kicking the ball around a bit. How aware are you offensively of a bad defensive team? Well, you’re not like completely aware because you’re really focusing on your approach. But I think when you know about a team and how they can be sloppy and as it plays out in a ball game, you’re more intent on saying with two strikes, I got to make sure that I put the ball in play because even if I don’t get a knock, there’s a chance they commit an error and it leads to us scoring more runs. [Music] struck him out swinging. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. The Cards leave one. We played an inning. No score. Top of the second now. The Reds cleanup hitter number 16. Number 16. Nicholas back to work. Michael in his ninth season. 36 years old. And he was drafted in the seventh round back in 2009. Next pitch is outside. Patrick Johnson behind the plate. Patty Johnson is some boot, but I’d ask permission first before I called him that. Does a pretty good job back there. Occasionally, we’ll see a couple of sideways looks from players, but that kind of comes with the territory, right? This to center field. Here on his way over. Got it. Really had to move for that catch. One down. Gavin. Now it’s Gavin Lux singing. When the year’s over, he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. Splits the plate. That’s strike one. Looks like he sacrifice to pitch right down the middle for tracking and timing. Some good hitters will do that. And there’s a foul ball. One down. Base is empty. Just off the inside edge. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. Second inning here. No score. [Music] Down the left field line. Base hit. And that’s going to get into the corner. Makes the turn and heads for second. And that’s a two bagger. really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. That was a thing of beauty. He may have been a little behind the pitch, but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in his swing, he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. So, the go-ahead run at scoring position in now for the Reds. Will Benson Church sizing this one up. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Batting seventh, third baseman Key Brian Hayes. Now batting Key Brian Hayes. He’s going to finish with a new careerhigh in stolen bases. Chris and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. And that one fouled off. And now one and two [Music] in the dirt. Man on second, two down. Rocketed out towards right center and there’s a hit coming home. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single and it’s one- nothing. Well, they strike first as he gets the job done to bring home the run. Just a really nice approach to shoot that line drive to the opposite field. There’s a lot of hard work and discipline that goes into getting a result like that at the plate. Doesn’t come naturally for most hitters. So, two down next for Cincinnati. Jose Trevinho and a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. [Applause] That one the other way for me fires over to first and that is the inning. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. We head to the bottom of the second. Here’s Nolan Gorman. Third base. Roland Gorman. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Way outside at one and one. [Applause] right side. Can’t love glove it cleanly. Still finds a way to get off a throw and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Pedro P. And stepping in for the Cardinals. Pedro Pah. And a foul ball. [Music] Swanging a ground ball and that chance handled. Throws to first. Two up, two down. This lineup’s going to have to find a way to make him work a little harder out there on the mound. I mean, he is just mowing him down. He’s settling in. You got to make him uncomfortable. Maybe step out of the box, call timeout, do whatever it takes. Jordan Walker the batter now as he swings and misses for strike one. He threw that fast ball right by him. Gives him a little bit of confidence, but in the back of your mind, you got to think, is he trying to set me up for later in this at bat? And a foul ball. He stays alive. Going chew now. swing and a miss and he struck him out. Three up, three down. Inning over. Redbirds down quietly. They’re down one- nothing. New inning getting started. Now it’s going to be Matt Mlean. Matt Mlean. misses inside. One and0 swing and a ball lifted in the air. Here sizes this one up, makes the catch for the out. Now batting the center fielder TJ Fredle. Back to the top of the lineup and ready to hit now for Cincinnati. TJ Fredel 0 for one with a fly out. And that one clips the corner. curve hit right back to him. Throws the first in time and now two gone. Now batting right fielder Noel V Marte. Two outs. Base is empty. Now the number two hitter Noel V Marte fly to center. His first time he’s 0 for one. And there’s the strike. [Applause] And a strike in there. Next offering down low and in the dirt. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and it drops in and that keeps the inning going. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already is bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time and guys like that they have a high contact rate and they have they got him and that will end the inning. Back here at Bush Stadium. Bottom of the inning. Here’s the second base. Jose Fair. Jose [Music] takes low for ball one. 10 [Applause] cut on and lifted in the air. Marte, he’s there. He’s got it. And there’s one down. Batting ninth right fielder Nathan. Now it’s the right fielder, Nathan Church. [Music] fought off foul. One out. Base is empty. That clips the corner. He’s gotten into a really good rhythm. Set down seven in a row. He just wants to get the baseball and deliver it as quickly as possible. Keep the momentum going. Stays alive. [Music] Not close with that one. Now one and two. [Applause] Dribbled up the third baseline and foul ball. [Applause] And that’s in the dirt. The change up missing. Three and two now. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. [Music] In the air, left field. Benson makes the grab and there are two outs. Up next for the Cardinals, left fielder. And up next for St. Louis, Lars Newbar. One for one with a single so far. [Applause] At 96, that pitch is in for a strike. And there’s a ball. That one in there across the letters. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. And now a little barking back towards the umpire. Clearly thought he got that outside corner on what was a pretty big pitch. Sometimes that only makes it worse for you moving forward, but it can also open up that location in the future. Well, looked at the fast ball for strike three there to end the inning. Nothing doing there for St. Louis and it remains one- nothing. Back here in St. Louis, the batter will be the shortstop, Ellie De Cruz. So, here’s a fun note on Ellie. He became the youngest player in high a ball to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game. And it gets better. He did it again two games later. Those are the type of games that tend to get you promoted in the minors. 0 and2 now on the ground to third. Tosses to first and a quick out number one. [Applause] So now here’s the Reds cleanup hitter 0 for one with a fly out to center. That one finds the zone. One swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Pitch misses and a count one and two. Got him looking and two away now. Gavin Lux the next to hit for the Reds. A double and a run. Scored his first time up. Fast for a strike. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. that catches the top part of the zone and the count is 0 and two. Yeah, that’s too high. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. swing and a miss. Struck him out. So they go quietly there. On now to the bottom of the fourth. It’s the Reds one and the Cardinals nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shami and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Ivon Herrera. Let’s go. [Music] Just missed. So, two balls and no strikes. And another ball. Expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball. Something in the zone because he does not want to allow the leadoff walk. That one misses. So a lead off walk. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. Now here is Alec Burlson 0 for one as he popped out foul to third his first time out. You have to be careful throwing and breaking pitches even in an O count. He loves going after the off speed stuff and he’s really good at hitting it. Line drive and there’s one down. Looks like the weather could actually play a factor in this one. It’s coming down pretty good. Yeah, it is. And it’s not too bad yet, but the field’s not going to be able to hold off if the rain gets any worse than this. So, keep an eye on the pitcher mound as well, and the rest of the infield start to puddle up a little bit. So, Jay-Z in the box now takes strike one. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps with over 80% of your first pitches or strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. just missed and fouled off with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. [Music] Bows it off. Still one and two. Tying run is at first. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Cuts and misses. sets a strike out. Now that here’s the third base, Nolan Gordon rounded out his first time up. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. And what you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate. Try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head on the outside corner. Strike one. This guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Next offering is down low. Herrera leads off first with two down to the inning. [Music] Swing and a ground ball out to short. They take the force out and he has thrown four shut out innings. So, one left for the Cardinals. Still behind by a count of one to nothing. We go to the top of the fifth now. The left fielder, Will Benson. Will Benson Michaelis back to work. And that’s downstairs and outside. Now one and one. [Applause] Ripped to short, whips it across. One away here in the fifth. Now batting third baseman Kean Hayes. In now for the Reds. Key Brian Hayes. singled and drove in a run his first time through. Hayes in his fifth season, 28 years old, and they traded for him earlier this year. And that’s in for a strike. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top of the fifth. A little out front there as he swings through it. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. [Applause] battling here as he fouls it away. Way high. One ball, two strike ball two. Two-2 the count swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. Love how he became a really tough out with two strikes right there. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Here’s Jose Trevinho. That one drifts inside. That’s a slider for a strike. Man at first, one away. Next pitch misses. Now two balls in a strike. That one fouled off. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. That one just misses. really good take especially with two strikes. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another highf fly ball out to center field. Fine on the move brings it in and there’s two away. That’s a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch. We all know those can be a little tricky, especially if the wind’s swirling around out there. Matt Mlan the next to hit for the Reds. He’s over for one. We haven’t seen a break in the weather and the umpires might be forced to make a decision soon. Yeah, I think so, Boo. I mean, everyone looking and wondering when they’re going to stop play. It definitely feels close. Pitch misses there and it’s one and0. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. [Music] The 1-1 is fouled off. outside low and it’s two and two. Two balls, two strikes. right side hard hit. That’s out number three. So, one hit is all they get. Last half of the fifth. Coming up, it’s the Reds one and the Cardinals nothing. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the fifth. And now the catcher comes up to here. Pedro Pah. [Applause] Strike one. Oh, and one. Next offering in the dirt. And it’s a ball and a strike. [Applause] Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. And a swing and a miss. And that’s six Ks for him in this one. Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Walker. Fouled off down the right side. comes up empty. The offense needs to start showing some fight against this starter. He’s doing his thing out there. They’re going to have to push back at some point and make him work a little bit harder. That’s off the inside corner and it’s one and two up the middle. Mlan handles, throws the first out on a bang bang play, but he made it close. Showed us right there why he’s considered one of the best middle infielders in the sport. That’s always a tough play going up the middle on the backhand, but what really made this play happen was that quick release, smooth exchange, and that was as smooth as it gets. And it had to be with the wheels going down the line. Fine batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. [Music] Foul ball. Now, this offense has just been locked down. Almost five full innings of shutout baseball. Almost got him. Two strike. blows the high heat past them. That’s a strikeout. And down in order go the Cardinals. They still trail one- nothing. Top of the sixth inning and now TJ Freedom taking off for Cincinnati. center fielder TJ Fredle. [Music] And a base hit right there. So, a man on base to start the inning. And now the right fielder, Noel V. Marte inside. Just missed. Well, these Reds digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. We’ve already seen eight line drives from them, and it’s always a good sign when the ball is jumping off your bat. And that’s what this offense has been doing so far today. And that’s outside line drive. That’ll drive you crazy as a hitter if you let it. I mean, he couldn’t have hit that ball more on the screws than he did, and yet he’s got nothing to show for it. Hang with him. I know the feeling. [Applause] Ellie Dea Cruz, the next to hit for the Reds, hole for two in this one. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. You can feel the extra attention on Ellie anytime he comes to the plate. This guy’s a player that keeps you on the edge of your seat because you don’t know what he’s going to do next. He can hit for power, steals bases, he can throw the ball 100 miles per hour across the infield. He’s electric. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Definitely a frustrating day for the offense. But when they look at it, this guy’s had his best stuff. Been painting the corners, working on the edges, and changing speeds. Just a difficult one. You tip your cap. The 1-1 is fouled off. Next pitch is outside. And that just misses in the air left field down the line. Newport makes the grab for the second half. Now that is number 16. And here’s the first baseman. Let’s go. And that misses. And that is ball one. [Music] Fouled off left side. And that’s a little bit high. We got two balls, one strike. Next offering is in for a strike. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. And that is that. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the six. It’s the Reds one and the Cardinals nothing. Back here at Bush Stadium. Well, we go bottom six. Now up for St. Louis. Nathan Church. Church. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And there’s a strike. One ball, one strike. And a count. One and two [Music] upstairs. Man. And oh man, I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Ground ball left side pays to first. One away. Bottom of the six. Now batting left fielder Lar. Lars Nar now at the plate. One for two. And that’s through there for a strike. Goodness. I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. You don’t get many like that in that location. I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound. Next offering in there for a strike. And it’s nothing in two. knocks that one away and will do it again. The Red Birds down by a run here in the bottom of the sixth. [Music] And a swing and a miss. Strike out number eight. Well, he really filled up the strike zone in that at bat until that final pitch. And as a hitter, you sense that they’re coming after you, not dancing around the strike zone. They want to attack and so you kind of get into swing mode and you have to protect the plate. That’s when you become really susceptible to something that makes you chase. And that’s exactly what happened right there. Ivon Herrera. Next up for the Cardinals. First pitch misses. Two outs. Fast ball in for a strike and a count. One and one. Back-to-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. That one ripped left field. That’s back there. Out of here. [Applause] And we’re all square. It’s one. Wow. What a clutch swing right there. And now anything can happen in this game. [Applause] So Singy, this is a little bit of a surprise. A guy known for line drives hits one over the fence. Well, if you’re a little too early, you’ll get some elevation in the ball down the ballpark. For him, it’s kind of a mistake. But you know what? When you have such a good approach, every now and then you’re going to run into one. And first offering is fouled off. [Applause] And a base hit and that extends the inning. [Applause] right there. He does a great job of staying in the big part of the field. Man, there are a lot of hits there. Thomas Jay. Thomas Sajay-Z next up for the Cardinals who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. [Applause] Yeah, that’s a little high. [Applause] Brown ball to the right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. But we’re all tied up thanks to this solo homer called even now at 1-1. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Jorge Alcala. Well, he struggled quite a bit. So, this is another opportunity to get on the right track. He’s given up more than one hit perenning pitch so far this season. Now, it’s the DH Gavin Lux. Gavin Lux. That’s hard hit on the line. And that’s a base hit. A leadoff single and the go-ahead run is aboard. Waste no time there. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. Here’s the left fielder, Will Benson. [Applause] And ball one. If you’re a base runner, you’ve got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get in the scoring position. [Applause] And now two nothing. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. [Applause] curve in the dirt. Kicks away. Lux into scoring position on the wild pitch and there goes the double play possibility. Really good read by the runner there. His secondary lead. He anticipates the trajectory going down and gets a really nice jump up to second base. Now he’s in scoring position. He’s taken away the double play opportunity. [Applause] That one not close. Ball three. Keem Ryan Hayes in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Go ahead run in scoring position. Nobody out and ball four to aboard. Now batting third baseman Kean Hayes. Next for Cincinnati, Krian Hayes. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. just missed with the go-ahead run standing at second here in the top half of inning number seven. And that one fouled off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Next one misses and it’s two and one. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. [Applause] The 2-1 just off the inside edge. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. [Applause] fouls one away and now three and two. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit. Just not able to square it up. Got it. And that is a big first down. Frustrating end to the bat for the hitter. And I’m sure that’s going to sit on for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. And here’s the catcher, Jose Trevinho. And that one upstairs. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. [Music] [Applause] The one late swing fouled off. [Applause] And a count one and two. That one missed. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. [Applause] Still two and two after the foul ball. The count is full in the dirt. Well done behind the dish [Music] and they’re all loaded up. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. So, bases loaded with one away. Now, it’s the second baseman, Matt Mlan. Golden opportunity right here. [Applause] That one ripped, but foul. But I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Late swing fouled off. [Applause] gets a piece and stays alive. Outside corner. Got him looking. Oh, that was such a great opportunity to grab the lead. You had the infield back. All you got to do is just put the ball in play on the ground and you drive across a run. It’s a frustrating outcome for the hitter. Now, I’ll still have a chance, but it’s probably going to take a clutch hit with two outs. TJ Fredle the next to hit for the Reds. One for three. [Applause] A laser to left base hit. One runs in. Close play but in there. It’s 3-1. Well, this game is tied no more. Big time swing at the bat to drive in two. Really good swing right there. You got a pitch that he knew he could handle. allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Jorge Alcala won’t go any further tonight. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Now pitching new pitcher for the Cardinals, Ryan Fernandez. Well, he’s been a bit of a wild card out there in terms of throwing strikes. He’s definitely struggled with free passes this year. [Applause] Now, Noelv Marte [Applause] hit in the air right field. Church gets under it, squeezes it, and that’s the third out. A couple of runs in the inning puts him ahead midway in inning number seven, and it’s time to stretch. It’s the Reds three, and the Cardinals won. Back here in St. Louis, set for the last half of the seventh. Now, the third baseman, Nolan Gorman. Let’s go. And that one way outside. Ball one. The Cincinnati bullpen has some movement. Nick Martinez getting loose out there. Phillips getting loose as well. This one ripped but foul to the right. [Music] That misses the zone. Two and one. Yeah, that’s too high. Hard on the ground to first. He’ll do it himself and the lead off hitter set down to open the seventh. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. [Applause] Pah in the box now. No balls in a strike. Usually when a pitcher’s had a dominant outing, he has filled up the strike zone and he’s gotten ahead in the count with first pitch strikes. Well, that’s exactly what this guy has done in this one. over 70% first pitch strikes outside low and count one and two. Really close pitch down around the knees there and you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. And that one popped in the air left field. Benson under it and that quickly two away. Up next for the Cardinals, designated hitter. And now Terry Franola makes his way out of the dugout towards the mound and he’ll make a change. Nick Leolo gives way and he was very good. They’ll be happy with that. No doubt. We’ll be back with a new pitcher in a minute. Now pitching Nick Martinez gets the ball now. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big erra. So this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals. Just missed. And that one fouled off of the ground to third. Tosses across to first and that is that. One, two, three go to Cardinals and it remains a 3-1 ball game. And welcome back to the ballpark. We’re in the top of the eighth. And now the shorts stop. Ellie Dea Cruz. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball one. Movement in the bullpen for the Cardinals. Jojo Romero getting ready to go. Gray the right-hander also getting loose. This one in the air center field. Here gliding in towards the infield. Makes the grab. One down. Now batting number 16. And now the first baseman 0 for three in this one. [Music] and he pumps in a strike. Fernandez in his second season, he features a slider, a four seamer, and occasionally uses a cutter that misses. And now it’s even one and one. Just missing off the plate there according to the umpire. And out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced, but it looks like he’s accepted it. That’s off the mark now. Two balls in a strike. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here inside and that’s ball three. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Next offering in there for a strike and then is strike two. Goes down looking. Oh, he was shopping at the buckle right there. The way that slider made him look, that was just nasty. Two down, base is empty. Gavin Lux the next to hit and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Next offering upstairs that catches the corner. Wow. Just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either. Two down on That’s inside. This one in the air right field. Church hauls it into the inning. Back here in St. Louis, ready for the bottom of the eighth. Here’s the second baseman. Jos Fairmine now. A high-fly ball out to left center. Benson on the move to the alley. Palls it in. And there’s one away. Up next for the Cardinals. And now here is Nathan Church. and church in there and it’s 0 and one. Well, in this one, the offense has sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving and manufacture at least one run. Then maybe you get two or three. Swings through that one for strike two. Movement in the bullpen. Emilio Pagan appears to be getting loose. One down, base is empty. Got him looking as the fast ball runs back over the inside corner. Well, that bat seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strikeout. You’ve got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off. Extend that at bat. Newbar. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man, Lars Nbar in there for strike one. They hope he’s the guy to spark a comeback. He tends to play better when his team is behind, so why not him? Sliced hard but foul. looking very settled on the mound here in the eighth. One more out. They’ll probably hand it off to their closer for the ninth with at least a two-run lead. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes and good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Redbirds down quietly. Score holds. It’s 3-1. Now pitching. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Sunny Gray. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Now the left fielder Will Benson. Left fielder Will Benson in the air. Right field. [Applause] One away. Now batting third baseman KBrian Hayes. Kebrian Hayes the next to hit for the Reds. And when you talk about elite defensive third baseman, this guy is at the top of the list. Stud. When you look at players like this, you play that hot corner. Got to be pretty courageous over there with the way balls come off the bat. That’s the kind of guy that every year you expect him to be in the all-star game and have a gold glove, if not a platinum glove. So, what are the skills you look for that make a really good defensive third baseman that elite? Well, Boo, one of the things I think about immediately are just the feet. Does he have good feet? Is he able to quickly react? And when you have good feet, you’ve got soft hands. And soft hand defenders are able to make tough plays look easy. Bases empty, one away here in the top of the ninth. Not close with that one. And that’s ball one. Hit on the ground to the right side. Takes it to the bag. Steps on first and it’s out number two. Up next for Cincinnati, catcher Jose Trevino. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati, Jose Trevinho. This guy one of the best defensive catchers going. You talk about framing, the ability to block, catch and throw. He is at the top of the game on the ground to third. Throws across the diamond and the inning is over. Three up, three down that time. 234 set to hit in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Reds three and the Cardinals one. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Alio Pagan. Hasn’t pitched in the last three days. Number 15, Emlio Pagan. Leading off for the Cardinal, center fielder, Ivon Horana. Swinging a foul straight back. [Applause] Hard hit left field base hit and that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Just a solid swing right there. Caught it out and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. Alec Burlson next up for the Cardinals. pitch misses inside and it’s one and0. All season long he’s racked up a number of saves and sometimes the adrenaline doesn’t get high enough until there’s a runner or two on base. Tying run at the plate just about gives his skipper a heart attack, but that’s where he functions best. And a foul ball makes the count. Two and one. [Applause] Basketball for a strike with the tying run at the plate. There the home team trying to pull it out on the ground right side and that one handled off balance feed. There’s one relay to first double play. Well, that’s a huge ball in play to get the double play defensively. Just one more guy to get this save for the closer. One out left for the Cardinals. Now up the Cardinals number four hitter Thomas Sajay. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Two-run game with two away here in the bottom of the ninth. [Applause] That’s in there and a count even one and one. They’re down to their final strike. One ball, two strike. This could end it. And that’s down and away. Two balls, two strikes. Bows it back with two strikes. the 2-2 and there’s the ball. Pressure Mountain right here with the tying run in the on deck circle. He’s got to find the strike zone. [Music] Got him. And that’s the ball game. Great pitcher duel in this one. You get to a certain point where each pitcher is trying to outdo the other. go a little bit deeper into the ball game. And for these pitchers, it really came down to a few key at bats. This was a fun one to watch. And your final 3-1 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
