THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING For The Philadelphia Eagles Going Into Week 3 vs. Rams & For 2025
[Music] All right, let’s do it. Welcome into Philadelphia Eagles now. My name is Chase Senior and I’m really excited about this show and I think all of you are going to enjoy it. Let’s begin here. I want everybody to close their eyes right here on Philadelphia Eagles now and think back to this night. Super wildcard matchup. Philadelphia Eagles on the road playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Everything was falling apart at the seams for Philadelphia late in the year after they got off to that pretty hot start coming off that Super Bowl defeat in the 2022 season. And the Eagles were banged up mentally, physically, and spiritually going into the first round of the playoffs. And the offense had flatlined. The defense was an absolute joke. And that playoff performance from Philadelphia, it’s kind of nice to call it a performance really was hard to witness. Philadelphia losing that game 32-9. And it’s how they lost, right? Nobody on defense could tackle. Nobody really had any effort. And the offensive performance was listless. Philadelphia and the entire city embarrassed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with Joe Buck and Troy Aman on the call. ESPN Monday Night Football for the entire world to watch. And at that point, we weren’t sure after the Eagles lost that game what the future of Nick Sirriani was going to be. He was firmly on that hot seat. And as we found out later, Jeffrey Lur thought about firing him. He reached out to Bill Bichc and floated the idea of maybe hiring Bellich as the next Eagles head coach. But he talked with Howie Roseman and he realized what Nick had done in 2021, 2022, and in a bad year in 2023 when they still won double digit games enough for him to salvage and keep his job. And obviously it worked out because last year the Eagles redeemed themselves. They flushed that 2023 season and they were able to win Super Bowl 59, their second Lombardi Trophy since 2017. But in that moment, it really felt as though the future of the Eagles organization was in peril. It was a little bit murky. That was the last time we saw Jason Kelce in an Eagles uniform. He retired after this. And so it marked the end of an era led by Kelsey. And remember how bad that Eagles defense was? You had Shawn Desai, the defensive coordinator, taking over for Jonathan Ganon. Brian Johnson taking over as OC for Brian uh for Shane Stiken. And this Eagles team collectively was such a poorly coached team and especially on defense, especially with the lack of effort that we saw, no fundamental scheme breakdowns, whether it was Desai or Matt Patricia. It was embarrassing. And that all happened with that late season collapse for the Eagles. The 49ers really exposed Philadelphia in that rematch of the 2022 NFC Championship game. And the Eagles to end that year had lost six of seven and had a lot of questions going into the off season coming off that heartbreaking Super Bowl. And to give you perspective on how bad the Eagles defense was in 2023, look at these numbers here. And it adds amazing value to how much they were able to improve last year in 2024. and we’ll get to that here in a moment. Points allowed, 25.2, 30th in the NFL for the Eagles in 2023. Total yards given up, more than 6,000. 5.5 yards per play, 26th. They gave up 4.3 yards per carry that ranked 10th, but still gave up nearly 2,000 rushing yards. Passing yards allowed, not good. More than 4500, 28th in the league. They only had 43 sacks a year after they had 70, which led the NFL. So that dropped them from first to 19th. They gave up 364 first downs. That was 29th. And penalties against 107 for almost 1,000 yards. Fourth most penalties in the NFL. And so coming off of that year, Howie Roseman, his seat wasn’t hot, but he needed to correct some of his mistakes. And what he needed to do was rebuild the Eagles defense. Now, as we obviously found out, Nick Serriani had to find a new offensive coordinator. It was Kell Moore. And a new defensive coordinator, it was Vic Fangio. But the personnel, especially on defense, on a unit that got old very quickly and bad overnight because in 2022 they were great. Howie needed to rebuild it. And so going into the 2024 NFL draft, that was a huge point of emphasis. And in the first round, the Eagles had not drafted a corner since 2002, Leo Shepard. But the Eagles were so bad at corner that Howie not only took Quinan Mitchell in the first round, but then he doubled down and took Cooper Deene another corner in the second round. And Quinnan and Deine two massive hits for this Eagles defense that those selections paid massive dividends in 2024. Those two players were starters as rookies on a team that was the number one overall defense that won the Super Bowl. And those two selections helped to change the future trajectory of the Eagles defense. And the Eagles went from being one of the worst defenses in the NFL statistically, probably the worst Eagles defense I’ve seen in my lifetime to literally the best in the league. But then this past off season, the Eagles did make a lot of changes on defense. Brandon Graham retired. They traded CJ Gardner Johnson. Darius Slay signed with Pittsburgh. Isaiah Rogers signed with the Vikings. Josh Schwe got a bag from the Cardinals. Milton Williams got paid big time by the New England Patriots. And so the Eagles needed to replace more than 4,000 snaps lost from this defense, which gave us so many great moments in 2024. And that brings us to the 2025 NFL draft. I’ve always said this about the draft. When you hit on picks and you hit in the draft, you’re able to replenish the cupboard as far as talent goes. But what’s also so crucial is that you’re able in a way to reset the salary cap to a certain degree because those young players become costcontrolled assets for the next four to five years. And so if you hit on those picks, you are paying them so little compared to what players get in NFL free agency with salary cap inflation. And going into this draft here, the Eagles had big issues at linebacker and at safety. Linebacker because Nico Dean had that patellar tenant injury and safety because of the trade of CJ Garner Johnson. What did Howie Roseman do? He drafted Jiad Campbell in the first round. That was the first time the Eagles took an offball linebacker in the first round since I believe the 1980s. And then in the second round, the Eagles thought about trading out a 64 overall. But they address another need safety Andrew Makuba out of Texas. And what’s crazy about the first two games of the year, on top of what we saw in the preseason and everything that transpired during training camp when these two players were really turning a lot of heads and opening up some eyeballs, Jiad Campbell and Andrew Makuba look like stars already. Ladies and gentlemen, this really does change everything. the development of these young players. It’s so huge for this Eagles defense because it addresses weaknesses, it addresses question marks, and it looks as though this Eagles defense, which I was very high on going into the draft, is going to be even better as far as their outlook for the future. And they really have a special collection of players that they can continue to build with. No, the Eagles now, I don’t think, need to go out and sign a Justin Simmons. They don’t need to go out and sign a ball linebacker because they have Jihad Campbell and they have Andrew Makuba. And look at the first two picks in the last two drafts. So in total, the first four picks of the last two drafts by Howie Roseman. Quinnon Mitchell, Kraine starters. Jiad Campbell, Andrew Makuba starters. And obviously in the draft in 2024, you get a player like Jayix Hunt. And I like that draft class. I like this 2025 draft class. And look at how Campbell and Makuba have fared already. Jiad in two games so far. Overall Pro Football Focus grade 83.6. That ranks 12th among 111 qualifying offball linebackers. His run defense grade is 72.7. That’s 30th. His coverage grade 88.3 that ranks seventh. He has a passer rating allowed of 42.4 on 64 coverage snaps. And the versatility is what really stands out too because Fangio calls his number on blitzes and he can be used as a pass rusher. Then there’s Andrew Makuba who in the preseason like Campbell showed some flashes, had some big plays, the 75 yard pick six, the fumble recovery and so far so good for him. Now, he doesn’t grade out as high as Jiad Campbell, but still pretty damn good. Overall grade 65.1, 43rd among 109 safeties, a pass rush grade of 79.5, that’s third. Run defense grade 78, that’s 11th, and a coverage grade of 56.8, 69th. But I don’t always put so much stock into PFF numbers because think about the plays that Makuba made on Sunday against Kansas City which directly impacted winning the safety blitz where he got the half sack alongside Zidarius Smith. Awesome play. The third and one stop on the shallow cross on Maris Brown where he lit him up which then led to a fourth down stop for Nolan Smith on Kareem Hunt. And then of course the big one, the interception of Patrick Mahomes off the hands of Travis Kelce. This is just a great team building strategy by Howie Roseman. Especially when you look at both sides of the ball, right on offense, this is a unit with pretty much everybody outside of Tyler Steen and Dallas Goddard and Jan Dodson signed to a contract extension literally. And so on offense, it’s a pretty expensive unit. And so, how do you balance that? On defense, you’re young and you’re cheap. And what this gives you is an opportunity on the cap, roster-wise, stars, depth to be a consistent, sustainable winner. and how it impacts 2025. The weaknesses and question marks at offball, linebacker, and safety now no longer look to be question marks or concerns, and they look to be strengths because Jiad Campbell and Andrew Makuba, it’s looking like they could potentially have AllP Pro Bowl potential and they’re already impacting games this early and you have to imagine they can continue to get better. more to get to here on the show. It changes everything, man. But first, be sure to give me a follow on XN Instagram, Chase Senior, in addition to all of the Eagles content I do here. Always talking Eagles over there. Also, I was talking to Jack Lay, who runs our ad operations here, and I asked him, “How are these shirts performing?” Very well. And they’re our top seller here at Chat Sports, thanks to our friends at Fanatics. These Eagles Super Bowl 59 shirts were $38. They’ve been bumped down to just $26. You can get them today at chatsports.comsb59 shirt, but you have to use that link in order for that deal to apply. Get them while they’re available. Speaking of Quinan Mitchell, all proseason loading for him. Maybe in two games so far, he’s played very well. Five catches allowed, two pass breakups, no touchdowns given up, 54 yards allowed. Now, some people might say he got beat by CD Lamb. Good matchup in week one. Some people might say he got beat on that deep shot from Patrick Mahomes to Thornton in week two. That wasn’t on him. In fact, if you go back and watch that play, blown coverage by the safety. I think it was Reed Blankenship who came up instead of staying back. And the speed of Quinan was so quick that he nearly caught up to Thornton who’s a speedster to dislodge that football. So actually that was great recovery from Quinan Mitchell. Another young player who we didn’t talk about yet but who I called and deemed a breakout candidate going into this year and I said he might be better than Milton Williams was last year. Moro good in week one and then against the Chiefs once again. Awesome. Vick Fangio said today he’s a good player and people have to stop being surprised by that. Six pressures against Kansas City led the team, a 22.2% pass rush win rate. He had five hurries by himself, two quarterback hits, and one sack. Dude’s a stud. And for those of you who don’t know him, get to know the name. Let me round out with this. Social media can be a very ugly place. I call it a cesspool. And on social media, Jaylen Herz by casual fans is not liked. He continues to be disrespected. And I’m frankly tired of it. And it’s time to shut all of those casuals down. In this era of betting, fantasy football, and social media, which leads to stats and clips going viral. All people care about is stats at the quarterback spot. You know what I care about? You know what Nick Seriani and Jaylen Herz care about? You know what the city of Philadelphia cares about for the most part? Wins. And all Jaylen Herz continues to do is win. Check this out. This is how Jaylen Herz has fared against the quarterbacks who are ranked ahead of him by NFL executives on the athletics quarterback tier survey. Against Patrick Mahomes, 3-2, against Joe Burrow, 1-0 against Josh Allen, 1-0 against Lamar Jackson, 1-0 against Matthew Stafford. They play again on Sunday, 3- 0 against Jane Daniels, 2-1. That loss, left the game early because of a concussion against Justin Herbert, 0-1. And against Jared Goff, 2- 0. Overall record, 13-4. That’s a winner, and that’s what matters.
