🔴LIVE 🔴Cincinnati Reds VS St Louis Cardinals/ September 16 / Mlb Envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25
after it’s just about ready to roll here. And for the Cardinals here this afternoon, it’s Miles Michael. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trusted, and really go after hitters, not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life in miss barrels of bats. TJ Fedel leading things off and takes a strike. [Applause] on the ground. Right side and it goes just foul. That misses. Now one and two. And that’s outside. That one misses. And the count is filled up. And a foul ball. He stays alive. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with the fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just is having a hard time catching up. Hit hard. Base hit. So runner aboard to start the inning. Batting second rightielder. Now Noelv Marte. It’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate. Barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month. And he swings and misses at the initial offering. There’s a swing and a drive. That one back. Unbelievable. Hits the fence. Always feels good when you come through and get your team on the board first. Anytime you smoke a ball off the wall, you kind of think about what it could have been, but obviously you have to be happy with that result. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Ellie Dea Cruz the next to hit for the Reds. That one’s in there. It’s 0 and one. The Reds signed Ellie in 2018, but it took a few years for him to stand out in their minor league system. In 2021, he went from an unranked prospect to a player on a fast track to the majors. Few scouts out there believe a growth spurt helped change Ellie’s entire career. Next pitch misses inside and it’s one and one. You know, the Reds were lucky they even noticed De La Cruz. They sent a scout to the Dominican Republic to watch it. That one is absolutely belted and that should be extra bases. Headed for the plate. He’ll score. Dela Cruz around third. Not in time. He makes it safely for an inside the park home run. Well, they call it one of the most exciting plays in baseball for a reason. Boog. Always fun to see an inside the parker. And man, he was flying out of the box. And I think that by the time he was getting to second, he had it in his mind to go all the way. That’s just great hustle from start to finish. Now, the Red’s cleanup hitter. really strong hitting performance recently. Can make it a five-game hitting streak with a knock in this one. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Can be tough to bounce back after a big home run. But nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. Kick sandals. And that one fouled off. line drive. Pauls it in and there’s one away. [Applause] Here’s the lineup for the Reds. And Chris, this group has been struggling to put up runs lately. Well, they haven’t been on base a ton. And even when they are, they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base. So, they need a player or two to really step up, have some quality at bats, hit according to the situation, and sort of break out of this. I think if they do, the rest of this lineup will follow. That one ripped right center field and it one hops the wall. Not stopping. He’s going for three. The relay in there safely. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. I love the hustle out of the box, man. He drove that baseball and he was thinking triple right away. One down, runner at third. Benson now at the plate. [Applause] That one inside. And that’s ball one. Lux takes his lead at third with one away. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Brings it in. Runner tags from third. He scores on the sack fly and they lead by four. Sometimes all you got to do is your job and don’t over complicate things. Keep it simple. Runner in third, less than two outs. put the ball in play and a nice job with the sack fly. Now batting Key Brian Hayes. He’s going to finish with a new career high in stolen bases. Chris and a foul ball. Well, a really rough inning out there on the mound and uh this is one of those where you learn a lot about a guy’s toughness and his ability to turn the page and keep pressing forward. Two out, space is empty. And that one hit to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So they move out in front after a fourrun outburst. Bottom half of inning number one coming up. It’s the Reds four and the Cardinals nothing. Back here at Bush Stadium towing the slab in today’s game. Nick Leolo. Chris, what are you looking for from him? Well, he’s putting together a really nice season on the mound. Erra in the low threes. Very respectable when you consider guys are looking to do damage. They’re not trying to just walk and hit singles. They’re trying to hit homers and draw walks and score runs. So, when you have a guy that can limit the other team from scoring more than a few runs, that’s really tough to beat game in and game out. ripped to third and caught. What was that? Here’s a Cardinals lineup. Now, and something they’ve talked about needing to improve on moving forward is their ability to apply consistent pressure, Chris. Right now, it’s not a club that gets on base enough. And sometimes, Boo, you just need a hitter to go up there and grind out and at bat, maybe have 11, 12 pitches, and all of a sudden, players get fired up in the dugout and they want to do the same thing. And before you know it, you start to get base runners on and you get a big hit and all of a sudden you ride that wave for a few days and go on a winning streak. That’s something they definitely could use. Pitch misses there and it’s 2 and 0. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. That pitch in for a strike now. Two and one. One out. Base is empty. Next offering is fouled back. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. That’s inside and it’s three and two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. And ring him up, says Patrick Johnson. That’s a strikeout. It’s a strikeout, but they’ll be in good shape if they make their outs as difficult as that one. Those grinding abs take a toll on a pitcher as the game goes on. And now Alec Burlson. They say you win. And one [Music] that’s inside and it’s a ball and a strike. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Fredel makes the catch and that ends the inning. Top of the second. Here’s Jose Trevinho. This guy one of the best defensive catchers going. You talk about framing, the ability to block, catch, and throw. He is at the top of the game. Really good athlete. And many times we talk about, you know, the feet of infielders. This catcher as well, really quick feet. He’s able to recognize the pitch, see the trajectory, and get into a spot where he can block those balls and keep them from going to the back stop. Mane. And stepping in is the speedy Matt Mlan. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. That one hammered but pulled foul and a 1-1. And there’s a rocket into the outfield around first heading for two. Round second, digging for third. The relay throw. He’s in there. Well, most guys would have a double out of that, but for elite speed like his, that’s an automatic double. He’s thinking, how do I turn this into a triple? And that’s exactly how you do it. So, back to the top of the Red’s lineup. And now the center fielder TJ Fredel one for one with a single so far. And first offering is fouled off right through there for a strike. Patrick Johnson calling the balls and strikes. Pretty standard zone for Johnson. Sometimes you might get a little jumpy, a little excited and expand the zone, but usually you at least feel like the pitcher on the mound is earning it. And that’s important because you got to make players earn it. Got him looking as the fast runs back over the inside corner. Just locked him up right there for the second out. And that’s an at bat he’s probably going to be thinking about for a little while. Didn’t pull the trigger. Not how you want to go down in an RBI spot. So now you got to hope your teammate behind you can pick you up. Tap foul at the plate. Two outs and a runner at third here in the top of the second. Fouled off left side. Two outs. That one ripped. and foul as it bangs off the fence. The next pitch misses and it’s one and two. Two strikes. Fouls it back with two strikes. Mlan on third with two out. Get out of here. Next pitch is downstairs. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle. And you get it right where you want it. Outside low and it’s three and two. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. gets a piece and stays alive. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Grinding AB right here. About to see pitch number 10. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball and a payoff pitch and ball four to a board. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty Cruz in now for the Reds. Ellie Dea Cruz. He’s already homerred in this game. [Applause] And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. And that’s off the inside edge. And now it’s even one and one. Activity in the bullpen. Andre Palante, the young right-hander up and throwing. Roy Croft also getting ready. Come on, St. Louis. Two on, two outs. And that’s fouled off. Next one misses. Two balls, two strikes. And that’s in the dirt. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another. Set him down and they’re all loaded up. Well, the stage has been set for this offense. Boo. It’s all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here. And next will be the cleanup hitter. 0 for one so far. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Big moment in this game. Two outs, two runners in scoring position and could really break this thing wide open early. Next offering in there for a strike and the count one and one. Let’s get out here. swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strike out. They leave him loaded. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Reds four and the Cardinals nothing. We head to the bottom of the second now up the Cardinals number four hitter Thomas Sajay-Z Ledo back to work. So Jay-Z goes 5′ 11 in 185 lbs and he was a fifth round pick in 2020. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. Good job to fight that one off. up the middle. Not in time. An infield knock to start the inning. Well, he did all he could at short to try to make an amazing play and almost got it done, but good hustle down the line. And that’s an earned infield hit. Here’s Nolan Gorman and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. There’s the strike of the knees. I understand you want to try to gauge that guy’s fast ball, but you also have to be aggressive and ready to hit in your zone. Now you’re in a tough spot. Ball one there. 02 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of the zone right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. Come on, Pedro. Pedro Pah in the box now as he leaves that one up high. Next offering is in for a strike. in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again to Jay-Z the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Step off throw to first and he dives back in safely. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, interesting. He’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the lead off single. Backto-back strikeouts. So, they haven’t been able to move that runner up, get him into scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring. I tell you, good job so far on the mound. He just needs one more out. Jordan Walker stands in now and watches strike one. Next pitch is outside. Swing and a miss as he was out front. One ball, two strikes. Swing at a ball popped in the air out to shallow center. Dela Cruz pulls it down and that’s the third out. The Cards leave one. They’re on the short end of a four nothing score. All set for the start of the inning. And now it’s Gavin Lux. Gavin Lux and first offering is fouled off. Though Chris through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. And that skips in the dirt. One ball, two strikes. And that’s in the dirt. Two and two. line drive and that should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Two hits for him in this one. Both for extra bases. Got to feel good about that. Anytime you can drive a ball into the gap the other way, it feels so good. And that’s when you know you’re right where you need to be at the plate. It’s even better when it gets you extra bases. Got to love looking in at your dugout and seeing your teammates fired up. Will Benson the next to hit for the Reds. That one missed. Counts one and a 10. Swung on. Belted going back. Unbelievable. That’s down. One hops off the wall. They extend their lead as the runner scores from second. That’s two consecutive extra base hits for this team. Just a beautiful triple from start to finish. Got a pitch he could drive, turned on it, and hammered it out front into the gap. Right out of the box, I love how he was hustling and I think he knew he was going for three as soon as it touched down. Here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Miles Michaelus done for the night and he leaves a runner at third. So we’ll see how the next pitcher deals with that when we get back. New pitcher for the Cardinals, Andre Palante. Well, they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging. It runner at third, nobody out now. The third baseman, Key Brian Hayes. And that curveball drops in there for a strike. started to go after it. Now a look down to first and he held up and that’s downstairs. Two and one. Just missed. Runner at third here. Nobody out. Down the left field line. Should be extra bases. Runner in from third to extend their lead. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front, ripped it into the outfield. That’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. Here’s the catcher. Jose Trevinho flyed to right his first time. Just missed. Pitch is in there. That’s strike one. Establishing both ends of the zone is critical. Most times guys are wanting to get hitters out down, but if you can get them to look up, get a called strike, that’s going to make that strike zone a lot bigger. Man at second. Well struck right field. That ball’s carrying and it one hops the wall. Run comes in from second and they’re pulling away up by seven now. Well done. Drives in the run. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Here’s a speed threat. Matt Mlan one for one. He tripled in his first trip. Strike on the inside corner. 0 and one. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. Church sizes this one up. Squeezes it. Router tags and we’ll move up to third. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. So, the lineup flips over now. Here is TJ Fredel. Singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two. To third, Gorman now a jump throw and they get the out. away. Come on. My goodness, Chris. He had to generate a ton of power in that jump throw for the out. Let’s take another look and dive into the numbers from Stackcast. Man, that’s an impressive throw right there in the air all the way from third base. You’ve got to have a powerful arm to play third base, but he just showed he’s got more than enough. He’s got a cannon and ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Noelv Marte and a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. And a base hit knocks in a run. wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Man at first, Ellie Dea Cruz the next to hit. Pickoff throw. in for a strike. Good slider. Oh, one down. That’s in there. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the walls. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Two outs off the mark there. Going to count one and two. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up now. Go back. Oh, that’s a strike out. And that’ll do it for the inning. So it’s four runs, five hits, no errors, and one left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Reds eight and the Cardinals nothing. Back here in St. Louis as we go to the last of the third at the plate. Jose Fairmine [Music] that’s in there and it’s 0 and one. This is one of those times when you want to be aggressive. Go ahead and pitch to contact. Let the defense work behind you. You’ve got a nice comfortable lead. Don’t try to be too fine. Little bit high at one and one. Oh, every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice, but it can be challenging for some pitchers. I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse. Go after hitters and get quick outs. Swings through that and it’s a strikeout. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. And when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch. When a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity, that’s hard hit on the line. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two away. Now batting leftielder now up for St. Louis. Lars Nbar. He’s 0 for one. [Music] First pitch just misses in the air. Left field down the line and it stays fair. Now he’ll turn for second and he’s in with a stand up double. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Man at second here with two away. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. He struck out swinging at his first at bat. Pitch misses. One and0 just missed. Oh, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. Go two and0 to count. Here it comes. And another ball. [Music] So now two on and two outs. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. So two on with two away. And here is Alec Burlson 0 for one with a fly out to center. Fast ball for a strike at 95. [Music] Two on, two outs. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. So they strand a pair onto inning number four. It’s the Reds eight and the Cardinals nothing and welcome back to the ballpark. John Shi with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth number 16 Come on, wake up. All right, let’s go. Swing and a tapper. Come on. And one gone in the fourth as they get the leadoff man. And the batter now, Gavin Lux. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Just missed. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with that one. Spoiled and the count now two and one in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. Still two and two after the foul ball. The Reds up big in this one. Top half of inning number four. And that’s ruled a swing. It’s a strikeout. Next to hit, Will Benson. Fly ball pretty well struck right field. That’s bat. drops in for a hit. Couldn’t run it down. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. Runner at third, two gone. Key Brian Hayes digs in now. RBI knock for him last time. Now liner and this could be trouble. Runner from third comes across and they now lead by nine. In safely with a double, his second of the day. Now batting catcher Jose Trevinho. So two down and here’s the catcher Jose Trevinho. And there’s the strike. Hayes on at second with two down. Foul ball way inside. Gets out of the way. Straighten him up a little bit. Here’s a one-two swing and a line drive slicing into right field. Church pulls that one down and that is that a run on two hits and they leave one. We’re midway in the fourth. It’s the Reds nine and the Cardinals nothing. back here at a blowout which gives us a chance to talk about just about anything. Bro, don’t get me fired. Singing. Did anybody ever give you the silent treatment? I don’t remember that they did. I think they were pretty cool with me in terms of celebrating my rookie year. First home run came in Anaheim against the Angels. And I always love to watch now though, especially when that player is unsuspecting. You know, some guys, they’ve they’ve been around long enough to know there’s a good chance I’m going to get the silent treatment. But when that player’s maybe been grinding it out for a little while and finally gets that home run, is expecting the big lift coming into the dugout and they just stonewall him, it’s awesome. Batting third base stepping in, Nolan Gorman. Every once in a while, they’ll work that same trick on a veteran player. if say he’s been cold or hasn’t hit a home run in a long time. And that’s always fun when you don’t see it coming at all and everybody in the dugout goes crickets on him. Yeah. And and that veteran players usually got a response for those individuals with one or the other hands. That was your worst start one year. Didn’t you start like three for 33 or something? Oh, it was awesome. It was I mean it was awful. Not awesome. It was awesome for It was awesome for pitchers facing me, but it was awful for me. It sounded like some type of deal at a fast food restaurant. Like three for 33 or something. [Music] One and two now. That’s out to center field. Fredel settles underneath it. Puts it away for the out. Two down. Up next for the Cardinals catcher. Pedro Pah getting ready to hit. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Come on, St. Louis. That’s outside. Ball one. Strike one. Let’s go Cardinal. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. He’s mixing his pitches really well. Laid on that fast ball after seeing the change up. See if he can elevate one. I think if he does, he’ll get the swing and miss. That one not close. Two balls, two strikes. And that’s outside. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Battling here as he fouls it away. [Applause] 3-2. Fights it off. He’ll see another swing. And a ball lifted in the air and that’ll get down for a hit. Zoe gets a hit after a long battle with the pitcher. Well, wore him down after an extended played appearance. It ends with a knock. At that point in bat for a hitter, when you’ve seen that many pitches, you’ve gotten a look, you’ve fouled off pitches. So, the confidence level is extremely high. And it seems like when you go that deep into an at bat, the hitter usually comes out on top. And the lefty with the 01 swing and that ball smashed on a line and that will end the inning. So no runs here on a base hit, no errors and one left. Onto the top of the fifth we go. It’s the Reds nine and the Cardinals nothing. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Chris Royoft. And with the big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers and their numbers, but I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. Matt, here’s the second base. Matt Mlan. Mlan in his second season, 25 years old, a former first round pick in 2021. Next offering is in for a strike. struck him out. He says, “I don’t care about draft rounds. Take a seat.” Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. You got three straight fast balls. Looking in the 02 count just to pour it back. Back to the top of the lineup now. Here’s the Red’s leadoff man, TJ Fredel. inside corner and that’s called a strike. Here’s the one. Swings through that one out in front that time. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Base is empty, one away, and we’re at the top of the fifth. St. Louis. Swinging a high-fly ball right field. Church settles under this one. They got it for out number two. Now batting rightielder Noel Marte. And now Noel V Marte ripped on a line. Nbar makes the play and that is that. Nobody left for Cincinnati but they’re still in command. Nine nothing. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Leading off, Jose Fairmine. Jose Lollo back to work. And that one is downstairs. And it’s one and0. You know, these Cardinals just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game. minutes led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today. Back up the Oh, that got him. Safe at first. And now after the play, we’ll check on the lefty status. And now they’ll hustle out to check on him. That was quite a shot he took as you see him down on the knee. Yeah, clearly in some real pain, but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn’t have to. It’s looking to me like he’s going to try to shake it off and continue. So, a man at first. Nathan Church will hit next. He’s 0 for one. That one catches the zone and that’s strike one. Rudder at first with no outs here. Go. Come on Cardinal. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. [Applause] The O2 and ball one. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. just tried to overthrow that pitch off the mark there and it’s two and two. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. And that’s a base hit. And now to a board [Applause] back to the leadoff spot in the St. Louis lineup. Here’s the left fielder Lars Nbar Newbar. And that one is lifted in the air and makes the grab. Runner tags at second and he moves up 90 ft. Runners at the corners now. One away. Now batting center fielder Ivon. Here’s the center fielder Ivon Herrera. Singi. He’s got a history of coming through in big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. Rudders at the corners, one away. Last half of inning number five. Foul ball there. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field. Next offering is in for a strike. If you’re a guy that can only hit to one field, then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust. But because he’s able to use the entire field, that’s why he’s so successful in these situations. When you played, did you play with guys that you thought were clutch and sort of what were the attributes? You said that’s what he possesses at a swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. In comes the run from third. It’s an RBI single. It’s 91. Well, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. Alec Burlson the next to hit. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Ball one. No strike. Come on, let’s keep it going. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. There’s a strike. If he doesn’t get a knock right here, that pitch he just took is going to eat at him for a while. You might not see another pitch like that from a top level guy like this. The one-1 and there’s a ball. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. That one outside and now three and one. Fought off. Foul. Church on third. Here at first, one gone. hit in the air out to center field. Fredel couple of steps in hauls it in and there’s two away. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. So they’re at the corners now. And now the shorts stop Thomas Sajay one for two. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Definitely a frustrating day for the offense. But when they look at it, this guy’s had his best stuff. Been painting the corners, working on the edges, and changing speeds. Just a difficult one. You tip your cap. That one’s in there. And the count even at one. Two on, two outs. Swinging a foul straight back. That just misses. Two and two. Good eye right there. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. [Applause] got him looking and he did not like the call. They get a run on three hits, no errors, and two men left on. Five innings complete. It’s the Reds nine and the Cardinals won. Back here in St. Louis now at the plate, Ellie Dea Cruz. You know, one of the most memorable innings ever for Ellie happened in July 2023. In one inning, De La Cruz hit a two out single to take the lead and then proceeded to do something that a Red’s player hasn’t done in more than a hundred years. He stole second, third, and home in the same inning. It only took two pitches for him to steal all three bases. Man at first, nobody out. And here’s the first baseman. That one outside. And that is ball one. Nobody out. Runner at first. Roy Croft checks the runner and he’s back in safely in the air. pretty deep out to center field and puts the squeeze on that one. One down. Up next for Cincinnati, the designated hitter, Gavin Lux. So, a man aboard, Gavin Lux, the next to hit for the Reds. Get two outside and that’s ball one. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes. That’s in for a strike. And that’s a stolen base. Not even close. You know, having a good lead is so key when you’re stealing bases. even if you’ve got great speed. But if you don’t have great speed, but can get an extended lead and a good jump, you can steal bases on a catcher who can really throw it. That’s a nice job right there. That one the other way, diving, gets down. Could be extra bases. Runner from second scores as they add on. Safe at third with a triple. His third hit of the day. picks himself up an RBI. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Will Benson the next to hit for the Reds. base hit and a run in to score right there. He does a great job of staying in the big part of the field. Man, there are a lot of hits there. So, up next, Key Brian Hayes swinging a drive deep right field. Hops over the wall and that’s an automatic double. Now batting catcher Jose Trovinho. Here’s the Red’s catcher, Jose Trevinho. That misses ball one. Well, he’s just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter. Might be a good time for somebody to call a timeout. Maybe the pitching coach should go out there and talk to him just a little bit. Two on, one out. On the ground to the left in plenty of time to first out number two and another run comes in. Next for Cincinnati, second base Matt Mlan. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Chris Royoft won’t go any further and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So, the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now, a new arm into the game, the righty, Sunonny Gray. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But, he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously, regardless of the score. Matt Mlan the next to hit for the Reds. One for three. That catches the top part of the zone. Strike one. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Fast ball for a strike and it’s nothing and two. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there and down on strikes he goes. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. Three runs on, four hits, no errors, and one left on. We go to the bottom half of inning number six and the 567 slots do up. It’s the Reds 12 and the Cardinals one. Back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Chase Burns. He’s got some of the best swing and miss stuff going right now. He’s striking out hitters at a very high rate this year. So, this should be fun to watch. Nolan Gorman now at the plate. Both two in this one. [Music] Gorman. Grab ball up the middle. tosses to first. One away. Bottom of the six. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Catcher Pedro. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Pedro Pah. Fast is outside. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Andrew Abbott, the young lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. Santion, the right-hander, loosening up as well. The Reds up big in this one here in the bottom of the six. Here’s a swing and a drive left field. And he knew it. His 12th of the season. It’s 122. [Applause] Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside. Fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. So one out, nobody on. And now Jordan Walker. And that is out of play. Hard ground ball. Base knock. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Now batting second base Jose. Now it’s the second baseman Josemine. And there’s a foul ball. Walker over at first with one away. Let’s go. And a popup right side. Foul territory. And there’s two down. Now batting right. Now it’s going to be Nathan Church. And first offering is fouled off and he chases a high fast ball there. He’s in a great spot right here ahead in the count 02. All four pitches in play right here, partner. [Music] And that just misses. And now two and two. on the ground out to short. The throw is wild and it gets away. Walker around second out his way to third. Coming home and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. But a solo home run will at least get this closer to respectability. We’re through six full. Back after this on the show. Back here at Bush Stadium, digging in, TJ Fredel. Now a screamer into the outfield. And there’s one away. Now batting right Noel V Marte. Next for Cincinnati, Noel V Marte. St. Louis. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Ripped on the ground to second and two away to start the seven. Fastball grew right down the middle. Usually a lot of damage done with that pitch. a hard grounder, but he wanted to get that ball in the air, maybe drive it into the gap. Two outs, space is empty. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Ellie Dea Cruz, he’s already homerred here in this one. There’s the strike. That fast ball, even though it’s up, that’s the velocity you want to go after. Low 90s a lot better than trying to hit the high 90s. That one clubbed out towards left center. But that’ll be extra bases around first, heading for two. And it’s a double, making him three for four on the day. And his hot hitting continues. They kept him in the yard that time, but all he’s doing now is passing the baton. And everything seems to get started around this guy. So, now here’s the Red’s cleanup hitter. Not close with that one. Ball one. swing and a ball popped in the air and it drops in. They extend their lead as the runner scores from second. It’s an RBI single and they extend their lead. Runner at first with two away. Gavin Lux digs in now. First pitch and he just misses. Just missed. When the skipper calls down to the bullpen, he’s expecting the guy to come in and get outs. So far, not getting what he was hoping for. Two outs. Just off the outside edge. Three and O. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Swing and a miss for the strikeout. Tied him up on a fast ball inside. They get a run on two hits, no errors, and a man left. Seventh inning stretch time. The Reds on top 13-2. Bottom of the seventh. And now it’s going to be Lars Newbar. Lars Newbar. Cardinal St. [Music] inside. Just missed. Next offering is fouled back. The 1-1 swinging a foul out of play. That one hit to right. Marte carous it and there’s one down. Now batting center fielder Ivon Ivon Herrera getting ready to hit. First pitch misses. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. And another ball. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the seventh. [Music] Highfly ball out to left field. Benson sizing this one up. And there are two down. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Burlson in the box now. No balls in a strike. Two down. Nobody on. Ripped to short. Zips it to first. And that is that. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now the left fielder, Will Benson. Gray back to work. That missed inside. One and0. Highfly ball out towards left center. Nbar sizes this one up, pulls it down, and he makes the catch. And there’s one down. Now batting third base Kean Hayes the next to hit for the Reds. No matter what when you’re playing this kind of rival take your game to another level. First offering and it just misses. just missed. The Reds up big in this one and we’re in the top of the eighth. Lifted in the air right field. Church long run into the gap. Makes a nice grab at a full sprint. Two away. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Trovinho the next to hit takes ball one. Let’s go Cardinals. This one high in the air to left center. Reaching for it. Makes the catch. Back here in St. Louis, bottom of the eighth now up the Cardinals number four hitter Thomas Sajay. [Music] The shorts stop takes a ball. That one fouled off. That’s a little high and it’s two and one now. A highf fly ball out to left center. Fredel moving under this one. Makes the catch. Going up, one down. Now batting third base. And up next for St. Louis, Nolan Gorman 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. And that’s way high. And that’s ball one. And a strike. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. Swinging a miss. One and two. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action inside. Two and two. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. The Cardinals with a lot of ground to make up here. the bottom half of the eighth inning. And that one upstairs outside and that is ball four. My partner known for being a touch hacktastic. All right. You walked 130 times. Oh my goodness. In your career. I can’t even believe I can’t I’d win. that happen. Yeah, I I I don’t even seriously I don’t believe that. Pahes Maddock with one down takes the strike. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. Swing and a high-fly ball left field. Fredel in position. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Now batting the hitter Jordan Walker will hit next. St. Louis. That one misses. And that’s ball one. Nope. That’s a ball. Gorman off of first with Jul. That pitch is in for a strike. And a strike on the outside edge. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That’s the inning. And we’re back. Here’s the second base, Matt Mlan. Matt Mlan. check. Swing went around. Strike one. They had a foul ball. 0 and2 now. Mlan tries to hold up. Appeal to first and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Gosh, here it is. Hit it. Three pitch strikeout. All fast balls. Man, he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch right now. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati. TJ Fedel right through there for a strike. and one base is empty, one away. You’re in the top of the ninth and a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. Quickly in an O2 hole. You’re going to have to give something up here in terms of power if you want to put the ball in play with any authority. And that one off the outside edge. And that one hammered way back there. And it gets into the corner, but it’s foul. Hard hit left side in the hole. Jump throw and it beats him. What a play. Now batting right Martel [Applause] Noelv Marte the next to hit for the Reds. Swing and a popup foul territory for the catcher. Pahus makes the grab and that’s the inning back here in St. Louis. So bottom of the ninth now it’s the second baseman Jose Fairmine [Music] swing and a highf fly ball out there towards left field. Benson gets under it and he can’t quite get there. It’s a foul ball. Ground ball right side. Mlan over to first and they get the leadoff man in the ninth. Now batting right fielder Nathan Church now up for St. Louis Nathan Church [Applause] and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. And that’s a fair ball. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. The throw in. It’s a double and he’s three for four tonight. A late jump. And I think that was the difference on the play. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve here in the bottom of the ninth. One out. And here is Lars Nbar. one for four with a double and that gets the inside corner for a strike. Church leads off second with one gone in the inning. Next offering in there for a strike. 0 and two man at second. Drilled in the air out towards right center. Fredel pulls it down and there’s two gone. One out left for the Cardinals. Now the number two hitter Ivon Herrera. Herrera. [Applause] That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Swing it. A ball driven out to center. Going back leaping and it’s gone. So he just clears the wall. It’s 134. [Applause] Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Chase Burns will depart. And as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with a new pitcher after this break. [Applause] New pitcher for the Reds, Andrew Abbott. This southball has been really good against left-handed hitters. Andrew Abbott. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Alec Burlson. 0 for four, a couple of flyyous. He’s also grounded out and struck out. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Two outs. Tap foul at the plate. The Red Birds down to their final strike. Swing and a miss. struck him out and that is the ball game. Offensive explosion today for these players. They gave up a few runs, but they had more than enough firepower to turn this one into a blowout. 134 is your final for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
