Siblings in the Pros: Mark & Elizabeth Williams Full Interview | Phoenix Suns
My name is Elizabeth Williams and I play Chicago. My name is Mark Williams and I play for the Phoenix Sun. Do you remember? Yeah. Yeah. I mean to Connecticut. Uh it was cool being there. That was obviously my first time being at a draft. Um, so just kind of see, you know, the environment build that moment was pretty cool. Yeah, I remember his draft because it was during our season and I was playing for Atlanta at the time but obviously got to take a day off and experience the whole NBA draft excitement, the energy and yeah, I mean it applies a little bit more to me because I was younger u watching her play on my here being loud and obnoxious. He was locked in. You got to find the picture of him where he’s behind the bench and his arms are just straight up with his D on like he was he was a super fan from the beginning. Um and that that made it even more special for me. But yeah, to see him just just grow into a young man now is just cool because I remember when he was playing on those little like but um and then just evolving his game and getting better and better to see I would say so. Yeah, I try to watch as many of her games as I can. Um no adjusting to the time difference when I got out here just watching a bunch of her games. I would say pretty lucky. Yeah, same. I mean, I think the final four run that you guys had your sophomore year was pretty fun to watch. I wasn’t there in person. I was watching overseas, but the energy that you playing with was pretty incredible. So, that was really when you came when you were at Duke, all you guys came home went to the house. So the Duke women’s team came. They played at less, you know, got the house ready, made the whole thing. Everybody ate there. So that was pretty cool that, you know, the whole team was able to come home just experience at home. Pretty special. Yeah, Duke. I mean, it’s a really special place. Obviously, the program is unique in that the men’s the men’s and the women’s teams have been so dominant for such a long time. Um, and I think he has a unique perspective and just seeing, you know, the women’s program and seeing Duke as kind of a man and then eventually being able to be a player um and play for Coach K. Um, Coach K was really supportive of us as well. So, I thought it was great that he got Yeah, I mean exactly what she said. you’re watching Duke basketball as a fan obviously and then you know for me watching the guys play you know you see guys you know that I’ve all been through there uh you know Jason Tatum Bagby window Carter all those guys were guys I was watching on TV and then being able to you know go to that school and be one of those guys and now obviously you know Kaman’s here said he saw you know my before he went there which was kind of a full circle moment for me. Um, so I would say that’s pretty cool. Yeah, I think she was just, you know, just to be myself. Don’t try to do, you know, too much. Just be who you are. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Um, but I don’t you don’t I don’t So yeah, I would say that uh I mean he just plays with a lot of joy, you know. Um, I think that’s a reminder because when you’ve been in the league for a really long time, sometimes things can feel monotonous, but you know, when you’re watching your players, you’re reminded of just the joy of playing the game. And so that’s why I really like watching. But yeah, I don’t think neither of them expected us to be to both be pros in basketball to be honest. Um, just culturally, you know, they didn’t really grow up watching or playing basketball. So it’s it’s just basketball has just provided a lot of opportunity for us and our family and and we’re just generally competitive people and so when we got into the sport both of us wanted to be the best versions of ourselves and fortunately it’s allowed us to be close. I think I mean everything um you know I think our parents have just you know fully committed you know every game they’re dialed in. you know, my mom will call me after games, give her peace. Uh, yeah, I would just say, you know, they’re just completely committed to us, you know, they just want the best for us and, you know, every time we’re on the court, they just want us to be the best versions of ourselves, and I always love them for that. Great. Yeah, they they sacrifice so much for us. Obviously, we’re kids of immigrants, and so that’s really meaningful. You know, they they sacrifice their time, their energy, family and friends for our family to have a better future. So, they’re they’re locked in now. You know, you’ll see our mom at the game, our dad will be locked in, too. So, uh I mean, she would play me, you know, when I wasn’t, you know, the player I She was like eight. Yeah. Like she she knew she was going to win. Um and then once I got older and better at basketball, she didn’t really want no more. So, you remember the first time? Yeah. Not specific. It might have been somewhere at the Williams. But that’s fun to see, but he was like probably 68 like all right for real. To answer the question, I’m with it. Um, I mean, it’s just a big opportunity for him. Obviously, this is a big year and rookie contract and opportunities for extensions. And I think as long as he plays with the confidence level that I know he can play with, the sky’s is the limit for him and I know that this is going to be a great organization. They take care of him and I know he’s excited to be here. So, uh it’s been great. U you know, the whole organization top to bottom, you know, feel like I’ve been really invested in me. Um, I feel like I’ve put in a lot of work in the gym, in the weight room. Um, you know, taking care of my body, doing everything I need to do to put myself in the best position to have the season I’m expected to have. So, I’m in a good spot and I’m feeling good. Love the city. It’s all great. Now, it’s time for the tour. He has to give me a tour.
From driveway 1-on-1 games to the NBA and WNBA, basketball has always been a family affair with Mark and Elizabeth in the Williams household.
