Carolina Hurricanes Standouts After Two Rookie Showcase Games

We are officially two games through the prospect showcase with some mixed results, but it’s all about the development of the new guys. So far, who’s really stood out in the two games and what should we expecting going into the final game on Monday afternoon against Tampa Bay Lightning? Well, on the Monday edition of Locked on Hurricanes is all about thoughts and where we’re looking at so far with the prospect showcase on Locked on Hurricanes. You’re Locked on Hurricanes, your daily podcast on the Carolina Hurricane, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. Welcome to the Monday edition of Locked on Hurricane. Your team every day. Part of the Locked On podcast network. Thank you to the Everydayer for making this your first list of the day. Five days a week, Monday through Friday, talking everything about your Carolina Hurricanes. I’m your host, Zach Martin. I’m the credentialed Carolina Hurricanes beat writer over at the Hawkers, also the co-host of the Searchcast, which is a weekly Carolina Hurricanes podcast, along with all my duties here at Locked on Hurricanes. Like I said at the top of the show, we’re gonna be focusing on the prospect showcase. My thoughts on the first two games so far, who has really been the standouts of the showcase so far for the Carolina Hurricanes, and then what we’re going to game on Monday afternoon. Now, uh, right off the top, I apologize if you guys are going to see me drinking a lot. Um, it’s tea just because I’m still getting over a sickness that I had last Thursday going into Friday’s show. Been feeling it over the weekend. So, if you see me just taking sips of tea, that’s just what the deal is right now with these slight pauses and stuff like that. Throat, all that’s been kind of crazy. But, so, please bear with me on this. Uh, try and go over the sickness. It’s uh unlike Disturbs, I’m not down with this one. But, like I said, the Carolina Hurricanes, they are 01 and one so far in their two prospect games, losing both of these games 3 to2. Now, the one on Friday against the Florida Panthers was a 3-2 loss in a shootout and then the game on Saturday was losing 3-2 to the National Priors in regulation with the goal coming in with around 34 seconds left in the game. But there were some good things to take from these games. Now, I want to point this out that what Kane’s associate general manager and Chicago Wolves GM Derrick York said going into the tournament. Anytime there’s a scoreboard, you’re playing to win and all these players want to make a strong impression, but no one is making the Carolina Hurricanes solely in these games. We’re focused on setting growth. We have players who are in different stages of development and are working on different aspects of their games. Some players are coming from junior hockey, so these games will be much tougher as we try to teach them the Hurricanes way. Other players played in the AHL last year and might be put in a new role as we can see if they can expand their game, which makes a lot of sense. And that’s why I feel like when you look at these games, you do want to take away, okay, what are the positives? What are you kind of looking at? Where are these guys kind of developing? Have you seen that growth over the last season into the offseason and stuff like that coming into the prospect showcase and of course you know there was the rookie rookie camp a few weeks ago and stuff like that and this is just to see where guys are at against other teams rookies. Yeah, you weren’t expecting these guys to come in and just blow the doors off and go three and 0 and stuff like that. If they do win Monday’s game then hey you went one one and one can’t go wrong with that. But it’s just to see where guys are at. Like when you look at, let’s say for example, the goalending, you know that you know these the two guys of Quap and Kaisb, you hopefully, you know, they didn’t really have great seasons last year. Hopefully you see maybe there was some growth in the offseason. See if they’ve gotten better. Of course, we’ll talk about it in segment two. Or you look at guys where you see like a player like Philip Eckert played his first year in North America was in juniors last year with the 67s of Ottawa in the OHL. What does he look like? You know Ivan Ripken played in Russia for most of the season came later on and played for Muskegan in the USA didn’t win a championship. What does he look like? You know you’re looking at Justin Robog. Bradley Nadau all these guys that play for the Chicago Wolves. You know, Dominic Vendicka plays with Malmo in the SHL comes over, plays with the American League. So, there’s a lot of different guys that you’re kind of looking and see where they’re at in their progression. And even you got some invitees as well. You know, you only got a couple of them, but you look at guys, you know, like, you know, Josh McGregor, what’s he going to do? You also got, you know, Giannis Woo who played, you know, both these guys either played in, you know, they they they both play in the WHL. went with Swift Current and McGregor and Madison Hat with Woo. So, you have different aspects of these guys seeing where they’re at. And so far, I mean, the first game, you know, it’s a fill out process. You want to see how the Hurricanes do. It was a little bit of a slower start. They had an early goal, got taken away, but you’re able to come back and tie it going force overtime. Okay, it is what it is. And then you see, you know, you get a shootout and you lose in the shootout, but hey, you know, it’s 3-2. You put up an effort against Florida. Then you look at the game on Saturday, you know, you get two one, you’re up one- nothing. Nashville ties it right away. Carolina scores early in the second period. Now you’re up 2-1. And then you go into you go into the period. Okay, third, you’re up 2-1. Nashville scores two goals, one with 34 seconds left. You lose in regulation, but you win in the skills competition shootout. So you do see some mixed, you know, mixed reactions, but power playwise, yeah, they had two power play goals on Saturday and they had one on Friday. So you see the power plays kind of, you know, working with these young guys, but you’re trying to see all these different aspects. You know, Giannis moved in and play in game one on Friday. Philip Eber due to precaution didn’t play in game two. So you see them play with the normal, you know, 126 and you see them play 117. is a little bit different. Even with a goalending, you see Kaisv mix in with Nikita Quap in game one. Then it was Kais the entire thing in game two. So it’s like I said in and Darren New York even said it. Yeah, you want to win games because there’s a scoreboard. You want to show that you guys can win those games. And I even wrote about it for the article that came out on Sunday following the game two, you know, loss on Saturday. And I even, you know, with that what Darren York said, it’s about the development of where these guys are at. Yeah, you want to win, but you got to see where they’re at. You got to see if they’re still progressing along or there’s stuff that needs to be worked on and look see where they’re at in their you coming off whatever league they were playing in in 2425. So yeah, you like I said, winning’s great. You always want to win. But for tournaments like these, it’s just way where are you at? What do we need to work on? Hey, have you have you shown us the growth that maybe you know maybe you’re farther up the depth chart than we thought you were because you you know worked on your game. Maybe you got bigger, you got stronger, you got faster, you develop the skills that we were looking for. So that’s kind of think what is kind of the more pressing matter more than just the wins. It’s about just being able to see where you’re at. And I think that’s kind of the big thing when you look at these tournaments is like I it’s just there’s no reason to get like oh this guy’s doing terrible or you know this guy’s like he’s out where he needs to be. It just depends on age what league they’re in where they’re at you know growing wise because these guys are still young. You’re still talking junior level players. You’re still talking early AHL guys and stuff like that. So they’re guys are going to be in different facets of where they’re at with their body size, filling out, speed, skill, all that stuff. So overall, the first two games, I’m not really upset. And you really can’t be when you’re looking at a team that went 01 the first two games. You’re seeing you’re seeing things that you really need to see. Is the goalending playing well? Is the guys are they figuring out the system? Because you got co head coach Cam Abbott there for the second time. you know, he coached it for the Chicago Wolves last year. He was the prospect head coach last year for the showcase. You know, are these guys picking up on the system? Are they playing the system right? Are they in the right position? Are they doing the breakouts right? Are they doing the right pinching? You know, are they manning the right guys? Are they doing the switches? Is is the communication there? Are the goalies reading the plays well? Are guys reading the transitions, breakouts, you know, are they learning the power play system? It’s all about trying to figure out where you’re at in terms of figuring the system out because yeah, a lot of these guys haven’t played together and so they’re trying to fill each other out and figure out who was doing what. So, I think that’s kind of the big thing. But all in all, you score you score four goals in two games. Yeah, you lost both of them three to two in different aspects. One in a shootout, one in regulation, but there’s still a lot of positives to take away from these and you saw how these guys have been going so far. I think it’s kind of the big thing. We only got the Carolina Hurricanes and what’s possibly next for them. And I think that’s kind of what you’re looking at is how are these guys doing in their progressions? Are they learning the system? Are they playing well? Are you seeing like, okay, I’m seeing the skill set. I’m seeing what this guy can do. The potential is there. Now, we’re seeing it in game action against the other top prospects. So, it’s like I said, it’s mainly to see just the overall body of work against other top prospects. Like I said, there were some standouts in these first two games. Who were they? Well, stick around. Welcome back to segment two of Locked on Hurricanes. your team every day. Now, we talked about, you know, my overall thoughts over the first two games, what mainly these kind of tournaments are mainly the big key things we need to focus on more than, yeah, winning is great, but it’s about development. That said, who’s been kind of the standout so far in the first two games of the prospect showcase for the Kings? It goes without saying, this is kind of no surprise. Bradley Nadau has really kind of showed himself out. two power play goals, two games. Did have a little bit of a slow start in game one, but I think as you saw the game one go along, he really showed himself to being that guy that, hey, he’s one of five teenagers to score 30 plus goals in the American Hockey League. He had 32 last year. Like I said, back-to-back games, back-to back, you know, power play goals. He has been, you know, putting in the effort. You the shot is still amazing. I know in game two we had a wide open net, you know, missed it on a one-timer. Later on in the period, doesn’t make that mistake again, absolutely rips it, scores at the time, makes it two to one. Hey, there you go. Now you’re playing with house money. Nell was no is no surprise for me. He is the top prospect for the Carolina Hurricanes right now. You guys heard me talk about it going into the showcase that with the most likely going to be with the Hurricanes like 99.999% sure. I doubt he’s going to be the American. So that means who’s that who’s that guy that’s really the number one for the Canes in terms of prospects. It’s Bradley. He’s showing why he is. I’ve been really impressed by him so far. He had he has shown time and time again why the Hurricanes drafted the 30 back a couple drafts ago. this is the reason he’s going to be that probably that first cop the Hurricanes need if they need someone to come up could be Ryan Suzuki maybe but if there’s someone that they’re really looking forward to that really could you know help the Hurricanes and he’s kind of shown that maybe he is ready for the next step it probably could be Bradley Nope so surprise he’s been absolutely phenomenal for the Carolina Hurricanes another guy we got to talk about Rouslon Kaisb I was kind of weary of like okay didn’t really have a great year with the Chicago Wolves last 5 and3 goals against wasn’t really that great. That save percentage was that great either. We like talking about a guy who had a 349 goals against an 876 save. You know, 20 games with Chicago, only played one game in Bloomington in the ECHL, 665 goals against, and 800 save percentage. What does that look like? Well, he’s really only given up four goals in two games. like he because he gave up the one in regulation against Florida. Nikita Quap gave up the second one and lost in an over in the shootout. But then you look at game two, the goals that the Hurricanes really gave up, you really can’t blame on Kaiso because it’s a bat kind of leads to a chance. And then you have a the actually the first the first goal is a tipin goal. Nothing you do about about that with a with a you know high slot tip in. Second one’s off a bad turnover and third one’s on a turnover that leads to a breakaway. So you’re talking about couple bad turnovers in a high danger, you know, high slot tip. Nothing Rouslon could do with that. But overall, I think Kais has been playing really well for the Carolina Hurricanes in this prospect showcase. Like I said, it’s four goals in two games. Mainly, it’s one full game in like half of a second. So basically in one and a half games, he’s getting up four goals. That’s not a bad goal against. Of course, it is a, you know, stats over account, but the thing is like he like he was he came in 66, you know, a lakey goalie. Now you see he’s actually put on some weight and he’s really kind of filled out that 66 frame a little bit more. So, you’re kind of like, okay, now he’s 201. He’s got some heft to him now. He’s actually working on that size. And the thing that’s been really impressive too is the fact that he plays tall but he’s not giving up a lot of the rebounds. Yeah, I’ve heard, you know, Matt S and Nick over at Kane’s Prospects, they’ve talked about it too, and I kind of agree with them. Like, you look at what he’s done in his rebound control compared to what he did last year with Chicago and even Bloomington. The rebound control has been absolutely amazing. You’ve seen that progression of like he’s playing taller now. He’s kind of filled out his body, but he’s not playing tall to give up a bunch of rebounds and giving these guys chances. No, he’s getting taller, but he’s absorbing the puck more. He’s got that rebound control working in his favor where he’s not giving the other team second, third chances. If puck’s bouncing off him, it’s going the other direction. It’s not going anywhere near their guys. He’s going to one of, you know, our guys or he’s absorbing the puck and holding the puck a little bit more. So you’re seeing that when you talk about where you are in your development, where you are in your progressions, I think that’s where you look at Rousan Kais being that guy who’s taken that next step of working on his development. And that’s kind I think for me that’s kind of the biggest development arcs we’ve seen going into this rookie showcase is Kais have taken that step from last year you know like I said struggling five and 13 you know goals against in the same percentage comes into the into the showcase and it’s kind of showing out showing where that progression’s at. So you know as of right now he’s technically the he could be the fifth goalie in the in the in the depth chart in terms of guys that are assigned to contracts. Who knows if Rouson kind of keeps that trajectory going? Who’s to see he’s not fighting for the fourth goalie spot behind Keem Prima? Because it’s right now between him and Amir Miffkov. If Kais keeps proving how good he is, I don’t I would not be surprised if you see him kind of slot his way into the main backup role in Chicago. And you know, depending on how it goes down the line, are you talking about number three goalie behind, you know, behind Freddy Ian Pota? I think that’s kind of the main thing you want to see when it comes to something like that. So, I definitely say Kaisv is probably one of the bigger surprises that I like that I’ve seen from camp and I really like what he’s been doing. Dominic Vanda, he’s been playing really good, too. you know, kind of did all right with Malmo. You know, you’re not talking about a guy who’s going to put in a lot of points and stuff like that. You know, played a few games in Chicago, didn’t you only play two games in Chicago, did all right, but overall, you’re seeing, you know, he scored a really great goal in game two. You know, you see the breakout moves, you know, getting down to the net, pucks on net, he uses his speed, gets in there, gets the, you know, gets the shot off, picks up his own rebound, and scores, you know, for the first power play goal of the game. given the Hurricanes a one nothing lead on Saturday. The his speed this the the m the when you look at his size and his speed I think it’s a it’s a very un it’s a very good combination to have you look at a guy like Benda on the defensive side. Yeah, he’s not going to score a lot of goals, but if he keeps crashing the net, if he keeps using his size to box guys out and pick up the loose rebounds, he could be someone who could get down there and, you know, get some sneaky goals in, but his defensive game has also been really good as well. His man defense has been good. He’s made some great plays that have made sense. And you look at him, it’s like, okay, I could see where the progression is from Beda compared to was, you know, Ben Nika where he was last year playing with Malmo in the in the junior 20 team and then the SHL as well. And of course, a couple games with Chicago. So, he’s another guy definitely I’ve been really impressed with so far. Obviously, Justin Rodoff scored the other goal in game one. I said going into the showcase, keep an eye on Roboth and Nidau because those guys really showed up for the Carolina Hurricanes. have been playing really well and it goes to show that they have one person I’ve been really impressed with so far that is really an inviteee is Jonas Woo didn’t play in game one for the Hurricanes was the healthy scratch he comes in for game two with Philip Beckberg being for preaution and yeah his defensive game is a little bit raw he I mean he’s also 5’9 so he’s not one of the tallest defenseman at all for the Carolina Hurricanes he’s actually the shortest defenseman on the team but the way he’s been playing defense has been so He’s 5’9 165 out of Winnipeg. You know, play with medicine having won the Memorial Cup, but defense is kind of raw, but he’s got some really good speed. Like there was a couple points where, you know, Nashville trying to get a breakaway. He gets back there, uses his body, breaks up the opportunity. Nashville doesn’t get a chance. Later in the game, Nashville’s pressuring Carolina in their own zone. He puts his stick right in the passing lane, breaks it up, and then clears it out. has some really good offensive, you know, you know, opportunities as well. I think for a guy who’s just an inviteee, he’s not under contract with anyone. So, if he does shoot up for game three on Monday, I think and if he does really well, who’s to say that the Hurricanes might not look at might look at Woo and be like, “Hey, maybe we should get this guy a contract to see what he can do.” Yeah, he’s on the short side for a defenseman, but he’s got some really good speed. He’s offensively minded because when you look at what he did for Medicine Hat last year, he had 11 goals and 43 points in 57 games. So, he’s someone who’s got some pretty good offensive side to him and he’s got that speed for it. Yeah. A little bit on the shorter side. You know, he’s, you know, 165, but no, maybe that’s someone to keep an eye on for a while. He’s been he’s been the biggest surprise for me, at least when it comes to invitees. So, it’ll definitely be interesting when it comes to that. So, all that to be said, Sunday was a, you know, team bonding experience. Now, game three is on Monday. And what should we expect from game three? Well, stick around and I’ll talk about it here in a second on a Monday edition of Lockdown Hurricanes. All right, so Hurricanes 011 after the first two games of the rookie showcase. You’re going to game three. You’re playing the host Tampa Bay Lightning. Games at 3:00 Eastern. Obviously, you can find it on the Hurricanes website. Probably find on the Tampa Bay Lightning website as well if you’re not able to get on the Hurricanes one. There’s ways to find the game. Um, going into this game, you know, I’m curious to see what they’re going to do with goalending because they had Kaisv play the entire game on Saturday in game two. Do you see Nikita Quap come in and let him play the whole game or is it going to be another split game between Kais and Quap? It’ll be interesting to see what Cam Abbott and the staff does. In terms of goalending, I’m guessing because of the fact that Kais is going to be one of the three goalies in Chicago, might want to get more ice time for him with before Klo goes back over to Germany to play in the German second league. You know, are you going back to the 126 or you going back to 117? I guess depends on what’s going on with Philback Burke. Haven’t really heard anything what’s going on with him. They says precaution. I didn’t know if he did if anything happened to him in the game on Friday. Hopefully he’s back in. If not, then we’re probably looking at another 117 again. It’ll be interesting to see, you know, what are they going to do with those, you know, the extra defenseman and the other forwards as well. Obviously, keep an eye on on Robot and Adele because they’ve been on the top line together with Felix Nerum. You know, what are the other guy, you know, what’s Grix going to do? He’s been okay, but I think Trixoff still needs to take that next step. I know he was hurt last year and it seems like you’re trying to get him slightly back into it, but I want to see a little bit more of a push out of tricks off because Nau does scoring goals, but he’s not afraid to stand up to someone because, you know, Austin’s uh wise blat from Nashville tried to get in his face about something after, you know, you know, a little, you know, getting caught up behind the Hurricanes. Then he kind of just laughed him off. So Nau is not afraid of anyone. Tricks, you kind of want to see a little bit more out of him as well. You know, we did see some early chemistry between Ryken and and Ekberg in game one. You know, those guys have some nice passes. They were working together some opportunities. So, if Ekberg’s back, you know, are we going to see that with those guys? I think Rykkins’s been pretty good so far as well. So, it’s just you’re seeing what the high-end prospects can do. You’re seeing the guys like a Robbo. You’re looking at what a NDO can do. you know what what you’re expecting from those guys. But now it’s like okay and even Charles Alexis Lgo I haven’t even talked about him yet. He’s been really good defensively as well. He’s had some offensive opportunities as well. So when you’re looking at LGO when you’re looking at you know the dough robot you expect those guys to kind of be those dudes because I think Lexus LGO is probably the next guy. You know LGO is going to be probably one of those next defenseman that’s coming up for the Carolina Hurricanes with no Scott Morrow. I think LGO is that next defenseman for the Canes and he’s been showing out really well, you know, in particular and like I said with Beda, Benedicta has been looking really good as well. So, you got really two good defenseman kind of showing out. You know, what does Jonas Woo do? Does if he gets the opportunity, does he make more of a case contract sign? Who knows? But it’s good to see that your high-end top prospects are doing what high-end top prospects are doing kind of, yeah, taking over the game a little bit. having all these opportunities to score goals and they’re cashing in on those opportunities and then you’re seeing those guys that you’re like, okay, who are the under the radar guys, you know, are they doing what’s necessary to make their case? I mean, Tyler Whis, Raleigh native, you know, he kind of showed out really well. I know right now he’s kind of he has that AHL ECHL contract with Chicago and Greensboro, but Tyler Whis has looked really good. Blake Benod, he’s been kind of he’s been really showing how good he’s been so far. Yeah, he played seven games with Chicago last year, but he did pretty well at the University of Notre Dame in the Big 10. 27 points in 38 games. Someone to keep an eye on a right shot center. Maybe Benody kind of starts making a little bit of a noise. You know, Alexi Hosami had some opportunities. I thought he did really well. You know, defenseman out of uh Finland played with Chicago last year. you know, Felix Under Storm, you know, you’re trying to see him take those next steps as well because you’ve kind of had a feeling that, you know, this is a, you know, guy you really want to see play well. So, is that, you know, Swedish Norwegian forward going to do his thing? So, there’s a lot of like, okay, we’re waiting for you to take those next steps. So, there’s a lot to keep an eye on with all these, you know, your middle of the road guys, you know, wanting to see that those guys take those next steps. Are your high-end guys being those high-end guys, controlling play, making the opportunities, making those passes to their teammates? Are they taking those opportunities to show what they’ve been doing as well? And even though some guys you were kind of like, okay, I’m weary. How are they going to be? You know, it’s a showcase. You’re going up against other top rookies. What’s your progression going to look like? So, there’s a lot of question marks coming into the showcase. And now it’s like, okay, this is game three. This is the last day before Are you going back to your specific camp or are you going to Hurricanes camp? That’s the big question and stuff like depending on what their contract situations are like. So, this is the show us what you got going into the last game of the showcase because that’s the big thing. It’s game three. You need to show us what you have left in the tank because this is a big one. Yeah. Would you do you want to win the last game? Obviously, everyone does, but you got to show us what your development’s like. So, heading into game three, there’s a lot of guys to keep an eye on. Like I said, a lot of the top end talent, some of the under the radar guys, definitely some guys that you’re kind of hoping for to play as well. But, it should be fun. Should be interesting. Like I said, if you want to catch game three, it’s on Monday afternoon at 3:00. It’ll be on the Hurricanes website or on the Tampa Bay Lightning website, depending on where you’re at and what you’re able to get. So, it’s the last game of the showcase and then later on in the week, we are finally back to training camp. It’s actually be the start of training camp. That means another step closer to the start of the regular season. I don’t know about you guys, I’m just glad we got hockey back in general. Yes, it’s prospect showcase, but it’s been a lot of fun and I’m ready for the actual Hurricanes, well, you know, the the main team to finally hit the ice and see where we’re at going into the 25 26 season. But it should be fun and I can’t wait for it to be here. But thank you for making Lockdown Hurricanes your first listen of the day for your second lesson. The Carolina Hurricanes would love to see wins in the Rookie Showcase; however, it’s more about learning about players’ development and assessing their progress in that regard. After their first two games of the showcase, who’s standing out so far? On the Monday Edition of Locked On Hurricanes, host Zach Martin begins the show by sharing his thoughts on the first two games of the rookie showcase overall for the Hurricanes. What has stood out to him overall from the group who are still getting used to playing with each other and learning the system? Why do these tournaments matter more for development than scores? Secondly, Zach shares who he thinks has stood out so far in the showcase from the Hurricanes. Are they top-end talent? Are they the invitees, or are they guys who were under-the-radar entering the showcase? Finally, Zach concludes the show by going over what he is looking for from certain players entering their final game of the showcase on Monday. Who needs to step up? 1. Love Nedeau. he has looked very good. He has had many scoring chances. He isn't getting the perfect passes from Suzuki that he got used to last year.

Robidas is fun to watch Good finisher. My issue with his game is that he does not look to make plays but to finish. He holds on to the puck a little too long at time and misses great passing opportunities. He lost the puck a few times due to this.

Unger-Sorum looks so much more comfortable on the wing than he did last year in Chicago at center. I feel that move set him back a bit. (Makes a good case to leave Jarvis and Stankhoven right where they are on the wings).

The Big defenseman- Can't remember his name. #64 or 67. Turn over machine!!!!! Reminded me of Ghost in the playoffs last year. But the big guy can hit!

Goaltending has looked good. I like Quapp. I have watched K a lot last year in Chicago. Really good until he isn't…….

Overall the prospects have looked just like the Chicago Wolves of last year minus the playmaking of Suzuki. They sustain a lot of pressure to start the period then look tired and find themselves defending. I am not a big fan of the coaching in Chicago to be honest.

It's been fun watching. Makes me want to jump back into scouting players again.

Quick note- The prospect Canes are tougher than the NHL Canes!
