Bob Brenly & Bob Melvin Rewatch 9th Inning of Game 7 of the 2001 World Series | Arizona Diamondbacks

Hey there. Hey, Mel. How you doing, brother? I’m good, too. Good to see you. Come on in. Come on in. Been a while since I’ve been in this dugout. Yeah, you know how to get your way around, though. All right. It’s my pleasure to welcome three-time manager of the year, Bob Melvin. Um, there a lot of stars on that 2001 World Series, Arizona Diamondbacks team, but for me, this was my star. We’re going to take a look at the ninth inning of game seven of the World Series. Without further ado, let’s get to the game. All right, Mel. As we know, we were trailing 2-1 going into that ninth inning. You could almost feel the energy building and Gracie went to the plate and he’s our on base guy. We knew that he was either going to get a hit or get hit by a pitch or he was and if I can pile on to that that the positivity that you had that inning I think really really served us well the entire inning starting with going out to the mound and telling Shilling this isn’t going to beat this. So Gracie gets on here and we have David Deluchi teed up to either pinch hit or pinch run depending on what happened with Gracie. Obviously Gracie gets on and we pinch run with with David Deluchcci. You know the whole inning it wasn’t what if it’s what now? What do we have to do now to get somebody on that plate and tie this game by Miller to the throw wide at second base and David Deluchcci we know he always plays hard. Two on, nobody out. Rivera throws. Once again, Nar shows his fielding prowess as he jumped on that ball quickly and got the force at third. The lefty that we felt best about that inning coming up was Tony Wac with the cutter. We felt like he he had an answer for that cutter. [Music] Right where he wanted it to hit. Here comes Cummings. It’s tied. Ded Cummings scores easily on that ball down in the right field corner. So now we got Coburn coming up again. And we said, you know what? Both of us said, “Let’s go with council because we can’t have a strikeout here.” And we felt like council was the best guy to be able to put in play. So that’s the third time that Colby had to come off the on deck circle. Yeah, I do remember all those pom poms uh from pregame right until the final out of the game. We walked out here. My goodness, it was rocking. So there’s the hit by pitch. But as soon as Counts gets hit and you watch Gonzo walk to the plate, it was almost like this is meant to be. like it was meant to be really. I mean, Gonzo had carried us most of the season and uh you know, the the moment finally came for him. You know, we we talk about the cliche when you’re a kid playing whiffle ball in the backyard, game seven of the World Series. This is it. This is Gonzo’s moment. And he even said this is the first time all year he choked up. Yeah. Gonzo’s down at the bottom of the bat trying to go deep, trying to hit homers and drive in runs. He knew all it took was contact right here. So, I’m I’m not even watching this at this point in time. I’m down there on the card and I never saw him actually get the hit. Oh, the line drive into left center. The Diamondbacks Williams there to greet Jell, one of the original Dbacks. Could it be any better? I took a lot of criticism for my reaction. I came out there pogo and out of the dugout. I I didn’t know what to do. I don’t think anybody did. Nobody knew how to react. you I had razor burn the next morning hugging Mike Morgan and Bobby Wit and all these guys that had about a 5day growth of beard and uh but man there was so much that went into that inning and so much enthusiasm and that started with you and so many heroes but as I said at the beginning of this me you were the reason I was able to get to that I was just lucky to be here the day before when RJ comes out of that game I remember I’m standing there and he goes walking down the the steps and all of a sudden he stopped and for whatever reason I turned turn around and look and he came back up and he looked at us and he said, “By the way, I’ll be available tomorrow.” Goosebumps right down. I got goosebumps then and it was sure the highlight of my baseball career. I know that, Mel. And I’m I’m thankful for having you standing next to me for the entire season. And I wish you nothing but the best of luck with the Giants after you guys leave town. There you go.
