🔴LIVE 🔴San Diego Padres VS New York Mets/ September 17/ Baseball Envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25
So, just about set now and today’s starter, David Peterson. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure. He’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Fernando Tatiz Jr., the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. First pitch, 711. That misses the zone and it’s two and 0. Fouled off. He was late. That’s off the inside corner and the count is three and one. This one chopped up the middle in plenty of time to first. One up, one down. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup. Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Fernando Tatiz Jr. And Boo, we’re talking about a guy who has great wheels and then puts them to good use. He’s the team leader in stolen bases and runs score, man. Using his speed to just get into scoring position and then just flying home when the guys behind him put the ball in play. I absolutely love watching him do it because he causes havoc on the base paths. Luis Araz batting with one down. Takes the strike. One out. Base is empty. Right back to him on the mound. Tosses to first. Quick start here this evening. Two out. Top of the first. Manny Machado. Two down. Base is empty. Manny Machado. The next up for the Padres’s definitely scuffling at the dish lately under the Mendoza line so far this month. Hard ground ball base knock and that extends the inning. Battterav’s Gavin Sheets now left hand bat. [Music] Inside ball one sheets goes 6 feet 5 in 230 lbs and though usually in left field today he’s the designated hitter. There’s the strike. Some guys don’t like not being able to play defense because it helps him to stay in the rhythm. So for him to be the DH, we’ll see if he gets a routine together. That one down the line. Dives, but it kicks off his glove. No throw. And they don’t get an out on the play. Here’s Raone Lauraniano. Little chopper rolls foul. Come on, York. Just missed in the dirt. Two on, two outs. Liner, base hit coming home. Here’s the throw to the plate and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. Well, it’s pretty difficult to throw a base runner out at the plate with two outs on a base hit to the outfield, but an excellent job of coming up with it, getting rid of it quickly, and throwing on the money. That is great technique from start to finish. Nice job to end the inning. [Applause] Back here with my pal Singi and starting this one, Michael King. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. a lot more guys striking out today. But when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. Francisco Lindor, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Francisco the pitch. Francisco Lindor at the plate. The Mets shortstop originally drafted by Cleveland and a guy with some serious power and an excellent defender. And that is downstairs and it’s two and one. Next offering is fouled back. That’s outside and the count’s full. Really good take, especially with two strikes. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Oh, looking for a swing and miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take to earn that walk. Here’s Juan Sodto. And that drops in for a strike. Come on. One ball in the dirt. Locked. Lindor aboard here at first with nobody out. [Applause] Got him swinging. And now it’s the polar bear Pete Alonzo. He’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching. The lefties, however, give him a little bit more trouble. Outside low, one and0. man at first. One away right through there for a strike. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. They had a foul ball. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Strike three and that’s two to a row. Oh, I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still late on it. You rarely see that. It almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. Here’s Brandon NMO. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. York. That one close rule to ball and that’s ball one. Fast ball for a strike. Two outs. Cut on and lifted in the air. And that is that. Come on now. Mets strand one scoreless after one. Second inning set to go. Here’s the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. Peterson back to work and that misses. Ball one. This to third and it stays fair. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he’s into scoring position with a leadoff double. Maybe a chance for our first run here. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Ryan O’Harn comes up to hit. swing and a high-fly ball left field. NMO makes the grab. One down. Batting eight, short stop. Jake Croninworth. So, the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Now, here’s Jake Croninworth inside. Just missed. One out and a runner at second here in the top of the second. Come on. Late swing fouled to the left. Peterson checks the runner. Merrill back on a dive. And strike two. Second inning here. No score. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single and it’s one- nothing. Mission accomplished there as he picks up the RBI to give him the lead. Just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down. Next to hit, Freddy Fine. And a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. Croninworth stands at first with one out on the ground to short. Could be two. There’s one over to Alonzo for the inning ending double play, but they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Bottom of the second and now it’s Mark Vientos. He set a new career high in home runs this year and singing he’s just trying to set the bar as high as possible now. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike and a big swing and a miss. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. [Applause] And a swing and a miss. That K is his third of the game. That was a wellexecuted slider away for the strikeout right there. First two pitches filled up the zone and got him ahead 02 in the count. And at that point, you can start expanding the zone as a pitcher. He made him chase and got the quick strike out. And now here’s Jeff McNeel and takes low for ball one. One, no strike. [Music] Foul ball there. York foul ball still a one and two count fouled off and they’ll Do it again. [Music] This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Well, Boo, that’s an example of a good at bat without getting into the hit column. He saw a lot of pitches right there, and that can set your team up for success later in the game. Next to hit, Brett Batty. First pitch misses. York. And another ball. [Applause] Two outs. Base is empty. And a ground ball to first, but a kicks foul. He hasn’t gotten the result yet, but he’s got to feel pretty confident. Three foul balls in a row. He’s right on this pitcher. Two down. Dolman knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. That one just missing inside. Full count now. Wow. This guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. And that’s ball four. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Francisco Alvarez in the box now as he leaves that one up high. Tying run is at first. Bottom half of inning number two. Fast ball for a strike and a count one and two. and misses inside and a swing and a miss. Down on strikes. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Mets leave one. They’re down one- nothing. Top half of the third inning. Now it’s the right fielder, Fernando Tatis Jr. I think when you contemplate him as a player, the first thing you think about is defense and you think about that great arm. I also think about the speed. If he can get on, that’s going to give one more thing for that pitcher to think about. Toss to Alonszo. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. Now batting Luis Arise. Luis Arise stands in. 0 for one so far. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. That one hammered but pulled. Foul. One down. Base is empty. Headed towards the corner. Sodto really on his horse for it. Corrals it. That’s out number two. Now batting third base Manny Machado. Manny Machado up to the plate. One for one with a single so far. York. That one fouled off and that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Two outs. That pitch just misses the inside corner. Ball two. Just missing off the plate there according to the umpire and out there on the mound. Maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced, but it looks like he’s accepted it. Two down. Doan cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. Three up, three down for San Diego, but they lead it one to nothing. Bottom of the inning. And stepping in for New York, Cedric Mullins. Cedric Mullins. swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Next offering is down low. And that’s outside. hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. So, the batting order turns over. Here’s the Mets leadoff man. Francisco Lindor worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. And that one clips the corner. a short stop. Takes a ball. Way to lay off that pitch down. Swings through that with two strikes. may see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Fouls it off. Still one and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Next one just misses. And the count is two and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. That one to first. O’Harn throws to second for one. Over to first. Safe. Up next for the Mets. Right fielder Juan Sto. And now it’s Juan Sodto 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him. swing. Get a ball popped up. King, he’s there. He’s got it. Two down. Here’s Pete Alonso. Next for the first Pete Alonszo. just missed. You can do it. Two balls, one strike. [Music] Swing and a highfly ball out towards right field. nabs it and the inning is over. Start of the fourth. So digging in now for San Diego, Gavin Sheets. Rolled softly, but that goes foul and a swing and a miss. Ball one there. fights that one away. Still one and two on the ground to first. Dives and he can’t hang on. Gets it there in time though and they do get the out. This is what it’s all about on that right side of the diamond when you’ve got the first base involved and the pitcher as well. First baseman does a great job. Knocks the ball down, gets away from a little bit, doesn’t panic. The pitcher’s exactly where he’s supposed to be. Nice feed and a nice play for the out. Lauraniano comes up to hit a single his first time. Ground ball to the right side and that’s a fair ball around first heading for two in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. One out, runner at second. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s upstairs and that is ball one. And there’s a ball. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. This guy’s sink has so much drop in it. It’s almost like a split finger fast ball. Instead of just weak contact and balls on the ground, he gets swings and misses. Lauriano, the runner at second with one away. Strike him out in the air left field down the line. Drops in for a hit. Couldn’t run it down. Rounds third headed for the plate. Tag and he’s out at the plate. I don’t think he got a great read and or jump as he was trying to score from second on that one. Nice execution by the defense. come up throwing, hit the relay man and then onto the plate. Beautiful example of a wellexecuted play. Ryan O’Harn the next up for the Padres’s fly to left his first time. That’s a little bit low. York. So, two balls and no strikes. [Music] That one ripped but fouled. Two outs and one in scoring position. Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] Lifted in the air right center field. And that’ll fall for a base hit. In to score is the runner from third and it’s an RBI single and they take a two-run lead. Comes through with the RBI. You can’t do much better than that on a pitch that far outside of the strike zone. Got him to chase on the two strike count, but he wasn’t fooled. He hit that ball really well. So, two down. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. And that’s a strike. Croninworth in his sixth season, 31 years old, and he was drafted in the seventh round back in 2015. Two outs. Goes down looking for the strikeout. That was pretty nasty. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now a two nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here at City Field. Now, the left fielder, Brandon NMO. Brandon NMO. That one misses and that’s ball one. Well, these Mets just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches. They’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. swings and misses. Now he’s in a one-two hole. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond. And they just keep eating right out of your hand. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Back against the wall with two strikes, but found a way. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. And now it’s going to be Mark Vientos. He struck out swinging at his first at bat. Swing and a miss. 0 and one. Boo. The runner at first needs to be careful right here. He’s dealing with a pickoff artist on the mound. Clips the corner and it’s 0 and two. Ruer at first with no outs here. That one is absolutely belted. And it’s off the wall heading for the plate to second. Pulls him off the bag. He’ll score. His confidence level is so high. Really nice job of coming through in a big spot. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Jeff McNeel stands in. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Just missed. [Applause] popped up. Arise has it sized up. Pulls it down and he makes the catch and there’s one away. Well, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there. And I’m telling you, he is going to be frustrating with himself until his next at bat. Brett Batty up now for the Mets. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Swing and a hard hit grounder to third. Fair ball. Can’t cleanly runner around third. He scores to tie it up. huge game-tying atbat right there. Came through in a big spot to drive in the run. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it right on time. Good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield. So, the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Francisco Alvarez will hit next. That one almost got him. Come on. Hammered on the line. Base hit. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners with one out. Love how he let that ball travel. trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. And the batter now, Cedric Mullins. First off, and it just misses. Got the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning inning double play, boo. Two on, one out. Swang and a miss. There’s the change up. [Applause] to center. Merrill in position, drops into the glove. Runner tags from third. He’ll score on the sack fly. It’s 32. No, that’s the third run of the inning. And this team is doing a nice job of executing at the plate right now. Now up to Francisco Lindor. He’s 0 for one. Swanging and a miss. There’s that change up movement in the bullpen. Nick Paveta, the hardth throwing righty, is up and loosening. Marinacio warming up as well. Ring him up, says Daryl Parker. That’s a strike out. Three runs on, four hits, no errors, and one left on. Onto the top of the fifth we go. Gets the Mets three and the Padres’s two. Back here in Queens, ready now for the fifth inning. And the batter now Freddy Fine. Peterson back to work. And that one fouled off. You know, these Padres’s doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game. And the numbers back that up. The numbers tell us they’re averaging more than a hit every inning. And they’ve only struck out twice. So, they keep finding ways to put their bat on the ball. Swing and a miss. struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things that when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. popped up McNeel and puts the squeeze on that one and there are two down. He’s been going after these guys consistently and as a result he’s been able to keep his pitch count low. Throwing the ball very well right now. And now Luis Arise bowl for two in this one. And first offering is fouled off with two out and nobody on. You want to go right after this guy. He’s the number two hitter which means if he gets on, you’ve got some thunder coming up behind him. And a change up clips the zone for a strike. This guy’s pounding the zone. Hitters don’t have time to think in between pitches. And that skips in the dirt. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. This to third. Batty to first. Padres’s go down one, two, three. Nothing doing there for the Friars. They’re down three-2. So, the Padres’s with a new arm on the mound. Nick Paveta just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Wanoto now rightielder [Music] and a pitch and he can’t come up with it. Still manages a throw and it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Alonzo. So up next for New York, Pete Alonzo and that’s in the dirt. [Music] Late on that fast ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. try to go again with the fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. The 1-1 is fouled off. Base is empty. One away. Last half of inning number five. Hard on the ground to first takes it himself. Old man for the fifth inning moving along. Two quick outs. Left fielder Brandon NMO. Two outs. Base is empty. Brandon NMO up now for the Mets. One for two. That one’s in there. Strike one. Swinging a foul straight back. on the ground. Oh, great grab on the dive. Throws from his knees. Wide throw pulls him off the bag and the inning still alive. Oh, that one right there had the looks of one of those plays of the week. Great diving stop, but he just couldn’t set up to make a good throw. Maybe got a little too excited. He was probably feeling it as well, but either way, that’s a tough play and a tough error. So, a man at first and next for the Mets, Mark Vientos. Pavetta throws over. NMO dives back in safely. Let’s go. Foul ball. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes. That’s in for a strike. Throw there. Safe. Yeah, I like being aggressive right there with two outs. Kind of a classic steel situation. You get thrown out, no big deal. That guy at the plate leads off the next inning. Now a single to the outfield can push a run across. Battling here as he fouls it away. NMO at second with two down. off the plate. It’s a ball and two strikes. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch. Two balls, two strikes. Right through there. Got him. That’s the third out. Inning over. So, no runs, no hits, and one error, but they leave him stranded. Five innings complete. Gets the Mets three and the Padres’s two. And welcome back to the ballpark. Start of the six. John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And leading off, Manny Machado. Come on, New York. And the first pitch misses for ball one. and a swing and a miss. Man, he was really tardy on that fast ball. Great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball. Add some velocity to it on the next pitch. Can’t catch up. Good eye right there. That’s a really good take. Sneaks through base head. Off to a good start with a leadoff nine. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. Gavin Sheets now at the plate. He’s been a great free agent side. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. lifted in the air out to left. One away. [Applause] Up next for the Padres, leftielder Raone. And now Raone Lauriano. So, right-handed slugger at the plate. Chrissy is surprised that the lefty is still in there extremely. I mean, you’ve got arms down in the bullpen and there’s somebody down there that can match up try to get out of this jam. Yeah, that’s fouled off with the go-ahead run at the plate. And we’re the top half of the six. Le takes off. Fought off foul. The next pitch misses now one and two. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Pitch misses and now two balls and two strikes. Line drive. That’s a base hit. Lead runner holds at second base. First and second with one down. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Now, a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. And here comes the Mets manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. David Peterson gives way and he really had to grind it out, but he does leave with the lead. New arm of the mound in a moment. New pitcher now, Klay Holmes. He’s been so good against lefties. Jackson Merrill, the next up for the Padres’s. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. And that drops in for a strike. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. The 01 and that one missing low. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Throw back in. Holds the runner at third. Base is now loaded. Only one away. Clearly seeing the ball very well in this one. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. Tying runs now just 90 ft away. Just got to be wary of that double play though. That would strand him and in the inning. And here is Ryan O’Harn. Dives for it. Got it. Makes the play. Runners tag up from second and third. He’ll score on the sack fly. It’s 33. Juan Sto does more than just packs a big stick. Special player defensively as we can see on that diving catch. He took away a base hit. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. There’s the strike. [Music] Two on, two outs. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. [Music] 0 and two now and delivers outside. 02 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat. Swaying and a ball popped up. McNeel brings it in and that’s the third out. Two men left stranded, but they do push across one. 678 do in the bottom of the six. All tied up at three apiece. And we’re back. Leading off Jeff McNeel. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Wandy Peralta, the left-hander, is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go. Hart also throwing and a foul ball. That’s too low. One and two to count. And that’s outside. Next pitch is outside. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. York. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Rolled over to third. Machado zips it across. So they get the out after a long battle at the plate. Now batting third baseman Brett Batty. Brett Batty up now for the Mets. This one in the air. And there’s two down. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Alvarez. Francisco Alvarez digs in. Now, this is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. Yeah, and because he’s got the big arm, he pays attention to the running game and is sure to manage it. Not close with that one. Now one and two. When you have a catcher that can throw like that, a pitcher doesn’t have to worry as much about the slide step. He can keep it. And he got him. Strike three and that’ll retire the side. Nothing across here this half. We’re through six full. All tied up at three a piece. Back here at City Field, we go to the top of the seventh. Stepping in for San Diego, Freddy Fine. Let’s go towards first. Alonso, he steps on the bag and they get the leadoff hitter in the seventh. Now batting right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. 0 for three in this one. Holmes, 31 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. [Music] This one chopped on the ground but foul. All tied up here in the top half of inning number seven. Next offering is fouled back. Got him. And now two gone. Well, I think that was just a case of a hitter quitting on a pitch. He was looking fast ball and didn’t see it out of the hand and just left the bat on his shoulder. That was a change up right over the plate. Probably not the location he was looking for, but the change of speeds is what fooled him and he got the out. Arise in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. And that one hit to first. And that’s just foul. tapped softly on the ground, slings to first and it’s a one, two, three inning. Padres’s go down quietly. Score remains tied at three. [Music] Out of the bullpen for the Padres’s, Wii Peralta. He’s pitching on two days rest. And stepping in for New York, Cedric Mullins. Cedric Mullins. Come on, York. That’s off the mark. One and0. Swing and a miss. There’s that change up and that one pulled foul. That one misses. Two balls, two strikes. And that’s downstairs and outside. Runs it up to 96 to record the punch out. Clearly looking out over the plate on that outer third. And that pitch finished right down the middle. Just a little bit in and he could pull the trigger. Francisco Lindor comes up to the plate. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. That misses and it’s one and0. Well, a mistake right here could untie this ball game. If you’re the pitcher out there, you just want to be a little more cautious. New York. There’s a swing and a drive. And that should be extra bases around first and hustling for second. And he’s into second base with one away as the go ahead run. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. Loud contact leads to the double. I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick. Now, a huge at bat in this game coming up. So, the go-ahehead run is into scoring position. Now at the plate, Juan Sto. Slice the other way and foul. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Let’s see if he’s willing to use the whole field right here. Definitely pounding him away. [Applause] swings through it and that’s a strike out. Big strike out there as he works to strand that go ahead run at second base. But job’s not done yet. Got to get that last out before you can exhale and get back into the dugout. It’s kind of tough to do with this home crowd applying so much pressure. So the go-ahead run in scoring position. And now the first baseman Pete Alonzo 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Lindor zipping around third. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single and they take the lead in the seventh. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Two outs, runner on first. Brandon NMO up now for the Mets. Outside. Alonso the runner at first with two gone. just missed. Last couple of pitches, breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. Two outs. That one misses. And that’s ball three. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. And there’s the automatic. Just doesn’t seem to want to throw him a fast ball. And that is out of play. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score it. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Drilled out towards left center field. Lauraniano raging back towards the wall. Pulls it in on the warning track. But the RBI single pushes across a run. 43 New York. Back after this on the show. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Gregory Sodto. And he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. Gregory. Now Machado up here. ing off for San Diego. Third base Manny Machado. First pitch misses. Action in the Mets bullpen. Edwin Diaz appears to be getting loose. Rogers also getting ready looking to get the tying run on base. Tap foul at the plate. The 1-1 pounding ball here. Rolls foul. And that one hit 97 on the gun. [Music] Got him. Swinging for the K. couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. Pretty big strikeout right there to start this eighth inning. Down one, any lead off base runner really makes this inning a bit more interesting. But now this offense has to switch from possibly trying to manufacture a run to needing to run into something or just try to string multiple hits together to get a run across the plate. Next is the designated hitter, Gavin Sheets. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. holding on to a one-run lead. And we’re in the top of the eighth. And that’s in for a strike. And a count is 0 and two. [Applause] Lifted in the air down the left side. NMO tracks it down for the out. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Lauriano stands in now and watches strike one. Definitely not a pitch location you’re expecting up there as a hitter when you know the guy’s got a good sinker ball. If he can get in that location, boy, you’ve got to look top to bottom and that’s going to make it very difficult to hit. Lefty continues to work, but the closer getting loose in the bullpen in there at the knees. One and two. Very solid inning on the mound so far here in the eighth. Holding on to this narrow lead. This is exactly what they were looking for. Started after the one-two pitch. Appeal to first and he went around. Not an easy call there, but that puts an end to the inning. Padres’s down in order. They still trail it here four to three. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Kyle Hart. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Mark Vientos up now for the Mets. Vientos. He swings and misses at the first pitch. 0 and one. New York. Swang and a miss. Well, he’s been aggressive right out of the box. And a smart pitcher is going to play off of that, especially when you get to two strikes. Back foot slider ties him up. Struck him out. Stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there. And I don’t mean to laugh, but that’s a tough one. I mean, pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch. I mean, it looks like a fast ball middle in kind of has cutter action and it just bunches you up to whereas you can’t get your hands through and the barrel to it and not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early and you spit on it. Jeff McNeel up now for the Mets. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. misses the zone for a ball. That was the sweeper. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Ron Marinacio preparing to come on if needed. line drive and that should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second and he’ll pull in there with a standup double. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. So digging in Brett Batty. Out to short and it’s through for a hit. McNeel around third. He’ll score and they lead by two. First pitch swing in went up there with a plan to be aggressive. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. One gone runner at first. And now here is Francisco Alvarez. One for three. That’s off the inside corner. And that’s ball one. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Batty the base runner at first with one out. They get it in quickly. So first and second now one out. Now batting centered Cedric Mullins getting ready to hit. line drive to short and caught. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. And now it’s Frankie Lindor. Right through there for a strike. First and second, two down here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. [Applause] swing and a pop off in foul ground. Machado puts it away and that is the third out of the inning, but they pick up one run on the RBI single. Last chance coming up for the Padres’s. [Applause] Now pitching for the New York Mets. Number 39, Edwin Piaz. back here in Queens. And now the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. He’s got a single, a double, and a triple in this game. A home run gets him the cycle. Fast ball for a strike. caught. It put a really good swing on that pitch. It hit the ball hard. You know, line drives won’t always find a hole, but the more you can hit the ball like that with good exit VO, the better off you’re going to be in the long run. He’s two outs away now. Ryan O’Harn. And remember, he was absolutely robbed of a base hit last time up. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. [Applause] One down, base is empty. Swing and a foul out of play. Here’s the O2. And they’ll do it again. got him looking for the K. Padres’s with only one out remaining. I’m not saying it it wasn’t a strike or you know it was a ball whatever but just the location with that velocity it’s hard enough even if the velocity is not great but that velocity that location tip your cap. Last chance for the Padres’s. Next for the Padres’s, Jake Croninworth. Just missed. Two down, nobody on here in the top of the ninth. Popped up to the left into foul ground. Catcher tosses the mask. settles under it and that’ll do it. Well, this was a tightly played game. Got a little of everything. Some timely hitting, runs on the board, key pitching and defense in certain spots. Definitely a fun one to watch. A 53 final score in this one. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show, I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
