🔴LIVE 🔴Texas Rangers VS Houston Astros /September 17/ Baseball Envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25
just about ready to go. And on the mound today, Jason Alexander. What do we need to know here? Well, it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of erra, but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness, if you will. We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses, put himself in a position to bring that erra down because, you know, in the back of his mind beyond the W, he wants to have a better earn run average. number eight leading things off and takes a strike. Here comes the 01. That one ripped but foul. [Applause] spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another packed house here at Dyken Park. Hit hard to the ground and up the middle. Base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. I’d say a mistake pitch in an 02 count. Too good of a pitch to hit right there. You have to expand the zone. Keep that leadoff man off first base. So up next, Wyatt Langford, third baseman playing on the edge of the grass looking for the sack bunt. Check swing on the first pitch. Appeal down to first. He did not go around. Runner at first with no outs here. Jason drilled in the air high and deep right field. Alvarez going back on it to the warning track. makes the catch batting third. And now we take a look at the Rangers lineup. One guy leading the way offensively for this club right now, Adoleis Garcia. And he’s leading them in runs batted in this season, which tells me this guy is able to slow things down when it seems like there’s a little bit of pressure. And he’s looking at as an opportunity to do damage. You know, a lot of guys, they see runners on base and they get big. They feel like all this pressure. I’ve got to get these runs in. But somehow he seems to settle into these situations. So watch out when he comes to the plate. Jack Peterson the next to hit. Takes ball one. Doubled up. Next offering is fouled back. Boo. Here’s a guy at the plate and I’m expecting to have a good game. He always seems to play better in road games. Runner on the move and he grounds one to the right side. gets it to first and Peterson retired. Batting fourth, first base Jake Burger. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Jake Burgerer stepping in for the Rangers. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. just missed. Laser could be trouble. Rounds third headed for the plate. He will score and the Rangers take the lead. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Loud contact leads to the double. I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick. Now it’s the right fielder, Adoleis Garcia. Pitch misses inside and that is ball one. [Applause] Two outs and one in scoring position. Sit him down. Cut on and missed. And it’s a strikeout. And that is the inning. A run on two hits and they leave one. On to the bottom of the first. It’s the Rangers one and the Astros nothing. Back here at Dyken Park and on the hill, Jack Lighter and Singy. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason, he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Jeremy Pñena leading things off and takes a strike. check swing and he went 0 and two elbow two strikes. [Music] The shorts stop takes a ball. 02 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat. [Music] to the right side. He steps on the bag. One gone. Bottom half of the first. Now we check out the Astros lineup. They do a lot of things well in this offense. Singi. They control the strike zone. They make pitchers work hard for outs and as a result, one of the better OBP teams in the league. Well, what I love about it is it’s an organizational philosophy. Whether you go to instructional league, whether you go to spring training, you see these guys even during batting practice when it doesn’t matter, they’re practicing that type of approach boo. And when you have that filtering through the organization, even when you call up a player, he steps right in and continues with the pattern that they have established at this level, which ultimately leads to a lot of success. And that one a little below the knees and it’s one and one. That clips the inside corner for a strike. You know, you translate on base percentage, it’s basically this. Teams that have a high on base percentage, they don’t make outs at a very high rate. As my buddy Joe Sheen says, OBP is life. Langford flashes the leather on the run and catch. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. had to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. That’s to third. Young zips it to first. That takes care of Koreah. And that is the third out of the inning. One, two, three go. The Astros still behind by a count of one to nothing. back here in Houston. And now here is Alejandro Ozuna. Alexander back to work. Just missed. One and0. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] Next pitch inside. Two balls in a strike. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. [Music] That one the other way. Kareah over to first. One out in the second. Batty seventh. Third base. Here’s Josh Young not getting the results he’s wanted at the plate recently under the Mendoza line so far this month. Astros. That’s off the inside corner. One and0. [Music] Outside corner. There’s a strike. probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. One out. Base is empty. [Music] And a base hit. Batting eight, catcher Jonah. Now at the plate, Jonah. Late swing. Fouled to the left. Come on, Houston. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Second base Dylan Moore. Here’s Dylan Moore. And that drops in for a strike. right through there for a strike. Quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. Check swing of the O2. Appeal to first and he went around. rule the swing. Well, he made pretty quick work of him right there. You look at the sequence, everything down at the knees and below. And some guys are good low ball hitters, but right there they clearly had a plan to pound that part of the zone and he wasn’t able to put up much of a fight. So, the Rangers batting order turns over. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. He’s one for one. Let off the game with a single and that misses. Ball one. And that’s down and away. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. All right, there’s the strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds, they’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with [Music] [Applause] first and second, two down here in the top of the second. and a swing and a miss. That Kay is his third of the game. Couple of strikeouts with runners on. Sometimes you got to really bear down and he did just that. Nice job of getting out of the jam and out of the inning. Back here in Houston, bottom half of inning number two. Here’s the former MVP, Jose Altuve. Albe has a lot of history with the Astros. In fact, he’s played so many seasons in Houston that he’s the only player to be named an all-star in both leagues while playing for the same team. You know, Boo Alu goes back all the way to those Astros days in the NL Central before they moved to the AO West. First baseman, Christian. And now it’s Christian Walker, one of the rare guys at first base that you almost think defense first. He is that good with the glove. You’re talking about top of the list elite defensive first baseman. First baseman are involved in just about every single play. So when you have somebody so solid over there, uh you can breathe a little easier. That one missed. The other thing about an elite defensive first baseman like him, it it just instills a ton of confidence in those guys playing third and short that have to make those long tough throws at times. And he just handles them so well. So he really makes the entire infield better with his glove. You’re not just talking about the ability to pick, Chris. One of the things about him, the range is impressive as he’s able to go to his right and get to those balls in the hole. One down, base is empty. Still two and two after the foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. hauls it in and there’s two away. Batting six centeriel digging in, it’s the speedy outfielder Jake Meyers. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season, Chris, ground ball to the right side and foul ball. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. Highf fly ball out towards left center. Langford makes the catch and that’ll do it. We played two innings. It’s one to nothing. Top half of the third inning. Here’s the center fielder, Wyatt Langford. He is quite an athlete. I mean, you look around the other sports, basketball, football, you feel like he could thrive in one of those sports, too. Right through there for a strike. Langford in his second season, 23 years old, a former first round pick in 2023. Down the middle for a strike 0 and two now. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. That one carrying and it’s gone. He’ll touch them all. His 22nd homer of the year. It’s two nothing. [Applause] Well, he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time. Took a direct path to the ball. Excellent extension and just drove it out of here. Nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that. And now Jack Peterson in the first pitch misses for ball one. Heart of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Just off the inside edge. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. In this situation, ahead 200, he’s put himself in a really good spot. Slider misses outside and there’s the automatic. Hot shot to third. Tosses across to first and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Now batting first base Jake Burger. And now it’s Jake Burgerer to hit. He doubled home a run in his first AB. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Not close with that one. And it’s a ball and a strike. [Music] Next offering misses down and away. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch. And that one is lifted in the air. Alvarez sizing this one up. Puts it away for the out. Two down. Up next for the Rangers, rightielder. Two down, base is empty. In step, Sado Garcia, also known as Elbombi, struck out swinging his first time. Hard hit to third. Throws across the diamond and Garcia is out. And that is the inning. Rangers pick up a run here on the solo home run. It’s now a two nothing ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. And we’re back. Bottom of the inning. So now the Astros designated hitter, Victor Keratini. Keratini. Let’s go Victor. swing and a liner foul off to the right. [Music] That one to first. Boots it. Still fires to first and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Yer Diaz. Yer Diaz now at the plate. Singing. When the year’s over, he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. Check swing called strike. Ripped on the ground to second. Tosses to first. Two up, two down. Batting ninth, leftielder Jesus Jesus Sanchez up next for the Astros. Swing and a miss. It’s 0 and one. All one’s the count. Lined into left center and that should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second. And that’s a double. These guys today are so great with handling velocity. They’re seeing high speeds day after day. And a nice job of turning that one around. So the Houston lineup turns over and now the shorts stop. Jeremy Pñena swinging a foul straight back. Runner at second. Two down here in the last half of the third. fought off foul man on second. Two down. Good eye right there. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. [Applause] Just missed. Really good slider. He’s up there just hoping that it ends up off the plate away. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Sanchez at second with two down. Swinging a popup. Moore sizes this one up and that’s the inning. One left for Houston. They’re still down. It’s two zip. The Lonear series rolls on and stepping in is the speedy Alejandro Ozuna. Astros and first offering is fouled off. [Music] and down on strikes. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Well, definitely a borderline pitch right there. And he didn’t look too convinced as he headed back to the dugout. You know, those are tough ones to let go as a hitter, but with a human umpire calling balls and strikes, it’s always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes. So, next to hit for Texas, Josh Young one for one with a single so far. Down the left field line. Could be extra bases. Throws to second and he’s got a double. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. One out, runner at second. Jonah will hit next. Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] You knew it after fouled off to the right. Strike him out. Next offering upstairs. His understanding of the strike zone. Very impressive. That was a very close O2 fastball. I just don’t know how you take that. Man at second up the middle and he knocks it down. Still able to get it there in time. And they do get the out. He had more time than he thought right there. Probably didn’t have to barehand it, but he made it look nice, that’s for sure. Dylan Moore stepping in for the Rangers. Struck out swinging his first time. And that’s through there for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Well, I know they’ve gotten out to an early lead, but you don’t want to take these opportunities for granted with two outs. Still lock in with a quality at bat. Drive in that run. You may not have another runner in scoring position the rest of this ball game. And a big swing and a miss. right side hard hit. Altuve slings to first that ends the frame. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left to the bottom of inning number four. Now it’s the Rangers two and the Astros nothing. Back here at Dykin Park, John Shabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, your Don Alvarez. Fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. Fast ball is outside. [Applause] That one outside. Two and one. Rips one to left. That’s a base hit. Now he turns and heads for second. the throw in and he’ll pull into second safely. All over that one right there. Textbook bat control right there. Got a pitch on the outside, saw it deep into the zone and just barreled it up. Went the other way for the knock. Now Kareah up to hit. Grounded out his first time. There’s a strike. Well, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit. And hardly order coming up right behind them. This is where they need to get going. Can’t it cleanly and now runners at the corners. Nobody out. Tosses to the pitcher covering the bag. One out in the bottom of the fourth. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. It’s early, but you still want to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score. That’s exactly what happened. So, you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. Altuve in the box now. Takes strike one. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. line drive caught. Unbelievable. Yikes. That ball was scorched in absolute missile and it almost becomes self-defense as the fielder when one of those things comes screaming towards you. Watch your lips. So next up for Houston, Christian Walker. Fly to center his first time. He’s 0 for one. And there’s a ball. [Applause] [Music] Here we go. Next offering is in for a strike. I got a ball. One strike. Alvarez on third with two out. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. And a foul ball. He stays alive. [Music] Two outs. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. The Lonear series rolls on. New inning getting started. And now it’s the Rangers leadoff hitter number eight, Alexander back to work. That one fouled off. Foul ball there. That one at 95. Missed up top. Going to count one at two. The shorts stop takes a ball. spoils that one and it remains two and two. Stays alive. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Good job to fight that one off. [Music] Strike three. Got him with the back door breaking ball. That was a pretty fun at bat right there. But you kind of hate to see a long battle like that end on a questionable call. I think he was right in letting it go. frustrating result after he fought so hard at the plate. Wyatt Langford getting ready to hit. He’s already homerred here in this one. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And it’s one and0. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top of the fifth. And that’s off the inside edge. Now two balls in a strike. [Music] Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. Say goodbye to that one. Another homer. his second home run of the game. And they add a run. It’s 3 nothing. That’s a swing that’ll boost the win probability for sure. [Applause] A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. There comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Jason Alexander will depart. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. And from Valdez into the game and he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. Here’s Jack Peterson has grounded out a couple of times. That’s a little bit low. There’s a strike. 95 of that one. [Music] That’s too low. And a count. Two and one. [Music] Right through there for a strike. Foul ball and it remains a full count. One down, base is empty. Highf fly ball lifted in the air right field. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Now batting first base. Two out. Base is empty. Next to hit Jake Burger. Astros. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. movement in the bullpen. Nick Hernandez appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Kimbell getting cranked up as well. Two down and that is downstairs. And now it’s even one and one. Foul ball and a swing and a miss. And that’s that. Texas extends the lead with the solo shot. It’s now 3 nothing. back here in Houston. And now here’s a speed threat outfielder Jake Meyers. Jake Myers. And that one sliced fouled. 01 now. This one chopped on the ground but foul. [Applause] [Applause] One ball, two [Applause] swings and misses. It’s a strike out. Tied him up on a fast ball inside. Vic Keratini at the plate. 0 for one so far. hitter Victor Harris. He’s been going after these guys consistently and as a result he’s been able to keep his pitch count low. Throwing the ball very well right now. In there and it’s 0 and one. Oh, that’s out. He swings and fouls one off ball. That’s out. And they’ll do it again. That one missed. [Applause] [Music] Fouled off again. And it remains three and two. And the right-hander deals. Fans another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. This guy will throw any pitch in any count. 3-2. He goes off speed, gets the out. Two down, base is empty. And now the catcher comes up to him. Yiner Diaz rolled out to second in his first at bat. That’s a strike. One over 80% of his first pitches are strikes. You’re doing that, you could have a really good day out there on the mound. chopped to the left side, fires across the diamond and it’s a one, two, three inning. Nothing doing there for Houston. They trail in this one three nothing. The Lonear series rolls on and now the right fielder Adoleis Garcia. Here we go. Astros Garcia in his fifth season, 32 years old, and he was born in Cuba. Yeah, that’s fouled off. No, with the shift on pits right into it over to first now. One gone in the top of the six. Here’s the left fielder, Alejandro Ozuna. Bowl for two in this one. Inside and that’s ball one. The Astros have some action in their pen. Brian King, the young lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. One down, base is empty. Tap foul at the plate. Swings through it for the K. Gasted right by him. Now batting Josh Young digs in now. First offering misses badly for ball one. Next offering is fouled back. Two outs. Top of the zone for a strike and a count. One and two. On the ground right side, takes it himself. Rangers go down in order. Nothing across here this half. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the sixth. It’s the Rangers three and the Astros nothing. Back here in Houston, well, we go bottom six. And stepping in for the Astros, Jesus Sanchez. Sanchez misses off the plate. And that’s ball one. [Music] And that’s in there for a strike. Little slider that finds Lamar tonight. His slider has been really impressive. I mean, tight spin. Seems like the hitters aren’t picking it up out of the hand. Just off the outside edge and it’s two and one. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. [Applause] up the middle. Oh, great grab on the dive from his backside and very nicely done for the out. What an acrobatic play right there. Knocks it down, throws from the seat of his pants and just looks like he’s playing in the backyard. He makes it look really easy. So the batting order turns over and now Jeremy Pñena now this is in the air down the line and that’s a foul ball. The Astros trailing by three here in the bottom of the sixth. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. [Music] All right, and down on strikes he goes. make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Oh, you know that’s got to be very frustrating for this guy. He knows the strike zone extremely well. And you know what? Good hitters are not going to compromise. He’ll take that punch out, but ultimately stick with his plan and have more success than anything else. Alvarez stands in now, looks at that one inside. Two out. Space is empty. And that skips in the dirt. sliced hard but foul down the left side. Swing and a ball lined out towards center. Langford brings it in for the third out. So another good inning for him on the mound. Six shutout innings now. It’s the Rangers three and the Astros nothing. pitching change here. Craig Kimbell just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Here’s the catcher to hit. Jonah, one for two. Let’s go Astro. Come on, Astro. That missed by a lot. Ball one. Drilled in the air out towards right center. Meyers pulls that one down and there’s one down. Up next for the Rangers, second base Dylan Moore. Dylan Moore stepping in for the Rangers. Fast for a strike. Base is empty. One away here in the top half of inning number seven. And there’s a foul ball. [Music] Almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. Timberlans over that right arm dangling. Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. Throw to first in time for the second out. Good job to clean it up after the drop third strike. Now it’s the shortstop. One for three. First offering and it just misses. [Music] And another ball. fouled off left side. Kimbell ready. Here it comes. Swing and a miss. And now two and two. And that’s downed away. This to third and that one handled. Throws to first. Third out. One, two, three go to Rangers, but they lead it three nothing. [Music] set for the last half of the seventh. Here’s the third baseman, Carlos Koreah. Well, timing is the key to great hitting and right now that door is still locked. They haven’t been able to figure out pitch sequences and it’s impacting them across the board. Well, it’s been a very impressive outing so far. His command has been a big part of it. Even when he misses, he misses outside the strike zone, which is exactly what a pitcher wants. That’s down and in. Activity in the bullpen. Jacob Webb getting ready to go. Martin the hardthrowing right-hander up as well. Next offering is in for a strike. In this situation, you expect the batters to be a little more patient, possibly take until they get a strike. with that. You don’t want to miss your opportunity to get ahead early in the count. He didn’t right there. Breaking ball misses down and away. Now in this three ball count down in the ball game, you’ve got to be very selective. Take your walk if they’ll give it to you. That one misses. So a leadoff walk. Pitch count’s getting up there now. And not saying that’s the reason for this walk, but this is the point in the game when every sign of wavering starts to get everyone’s attention. And the Rangers manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Jack Lighter won’t go any further. Only two hits allowed for him. So a great effort and we’ll be back after a quick break to tell you about the new arm. Jacob Webb into the game coming on to face a righty here and he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Jose Altuve up to hit here. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s that one is absolutely belted and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. Throw comes in, runner stopped. Second and third, nobody out. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. A lot of times in today’s game, right fielders are able to get to a ball that stays in like that, but he hit that one pretty well. And if he hits it just a little bit different on the barrel, it’s out of here easily. But there’s nothing wrong with the extra bases right there. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. Big spot late in this one. And here’s Christian Walker and fouled off with the tying run at the plate here. The bottom of the seventh. [Applause] Late swing fouled off. [Applause] And the sweeper misses. [Applause] Next offering misses down and away. [Applause] bouncer to Young. Young tosses to first and one away in the bottom of the seventh. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. And next to hit for Houston, Jake Meyers. Listen, there’s absolutely no reason to pitch to this guy right here. You nibble. You see if he’ll expand his zone, but don’t give him anything to hit. If you walk him, not a big deal. You have a double play opportunity set up. Just missed. [Applause] The tying run at the plate. Close but called the ball. Now two and0. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. [Applause] Center field, Langford. Are you kidding me? Drops into the glove. Here comes the runner from third. He scores. That’s a big sacrifice fly. It’s 3-1. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. Got the job done. Next is the DH. a switch hitter, Victor Keratini. Well, both sides equally as strong, so not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate inside. Just missed. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one. A little bit high. Ball two. And another ball. Yer Diaz in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Music] [Applause] And that drops in for a strike. Altuve at second with two down [Applause] in the zone for a strike. That was the sweeper. It’s a hitter. You don’t know what to expect here in the 3-2. If he’ll throw a breaking ball 3-1, he’ll do it again. 3-2. Blows the high heat past him. That’s a strikeout. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Up next for the Rangers, Wyatt Langford. He’s got a couple homers already, so can he possibly do it again? Come on, man. Of course he can. And those two he hit were legit. And he looks pretty locked in right now at the dish. Kimbell back to work. Pitch is in there. Strike one. [Music] in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Got him swinging. Well, that pitch wasn’t even close to being a strike. And that just goes to show you how defensive hitters can become when they’re up against an 02 count. You’re just hoping for a mistake somewhere near the zone that you can get the bat to. But right there, he was clearly anxious. He was swinging when the ball left the hand. Peterson in the box now. No balls in a strike. Well struck right field. That one’s back and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases and Jock is going to have himself a double. He hit that ball really well to deep right field right there. Got a pitch to drive and just stayed through it nicely. Didn’t quite have the trajectory to clear the fence, but you’re always happy with an extra base hit. So now it’s the four-hole hitter Jake Burgerer. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Man at second. Kimroll. He’s kind of a prototypical bullpen arm in today’s game. electric stuff that results in a ton of strikeouts in a tough spot like this. That is a big time benefit. Let’s go Astros. And that one fouled off. As a hitter, when a guy like this comes into the game, you feel like he’s standing on top of you and it’s just attack mode coming right at you expecting to get a swing and miss. And that one hit to first and that’s just foul. An uncharacteristic mistake from a really good defensive player and a one-two swinging a miss that one in the dirt gets the out. Two down after the strike out and the runner stays where he is. That’s a pretty nasty pitch right there. I’d call it a power curveball in the 80s. It’s got so much spin on it and you really don’t have a lot of time to sit back and watch what it’s going to do before you have to commit. It was a good one for the swinging strikeout. Adoleis Garcia stepping in for the Rangers. 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. First pitch misses. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Coming home. Here’s the throw to the plate. It’s offline. The run comes in and they’re up by three. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Man at first. Next up for Texas, Alejandro Ozuna 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. Sliced hard but fouled. next offering in there for a strike and a count is 0 and two. One run across in the frame so far and we’re in the top of the eighth. fights that one away. Still one and two. And that one almost hit him. Two outs. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout, but they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a 4-1 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back now. new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Cole Win. And he’s been fantastic this year. Really stingy in terms of allowing base runners. He’s just got great stuff that’s tough to square up. Diaz, line drive, base hit right field. So, a man on base to start the inning. went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. So next up for Houston, Jesus Sanchez. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. And it’s even up. Diaz on at first. Nobody out. Hit in the air left field. Ozuna. Oh, what was that? Calls it in for the out. And there’s one away. Now batting the short stop. Jeremy. So digging in. Jeremy Pñena 0 for three in this one. here. And a foul ball, man. At first, one away. And that is out of play. and delivers outside [Music] fights it off. He’ll see another. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Yeah, that’s outside. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Headed towards the corner. Did he trip? What happened? Sniper. Great effort. That’s how bad he wanted that one. Head first dive. battling here as he fouls it away. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. [Music] Still two and two after the foul ball. All right, let’s go. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. They get it in quickly. So, first and second now, one out. But when you see that many pitches in an at bat, your chances of succeeding go up. And right there, we see the result. And here comes Yordon Alvarez for a critical at bat. You got to feel like there’s a pretty good chance this game is going to turn on one swing. [Music] Tying run at the plate. And now two and nothing. Back door breaking ball just missed right there. And boy, umpire didn’t give him the call. I bet you if he throws it again, hitter knows he’s going to have to swing it. And there’s a ball. Way to lay off that pitch down. Carlos Koreah up next for the Astros. Here’s a three-0 liner and this could be trouble. Runner around third on his way to the plate. Slams off the bottom of the wall. Across is the runner from first. It’s 43. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch runscoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. And the Rangers manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Cole Win out of the game and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching new pitcher now, Chris Martin. Definitely a guy that pounds the strike zone, makes hitters earn their way on base, and rarely gets in trouble because of free passes. Making a move at second base, coming in as the pinch runner, Cam Smith. One out, runner at second. And stepping in for the Astros, Carlos Koreah. Fast ball is outside. [Applause] So the tying run at second fought off foul. Let’s go. Bounding ball here. Rolls. Foul. Got him swinging. It’s a strike out. The high heat too much on that one. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters. in more recent years. I mean, with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising, even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So, very difficult to get the barrel on it. With the tying run at second, the bottom half of the eighth inning. Swang in a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field. Around from second is the tying run. Not in time. He’s got a double. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. So runner at second, two down. Christian Walker up next for the Astros. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. A bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. [Music] And now the one and that’s fouled off. [Music] Two down. Go ahead run in scoring position. And a swing and a miss. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. But they score three times to even it up. Ninth inning coming up and we are tied 4-4. Back now and on the mound a closer Ryan Abrau. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. So digging in Josh Young Josh Young swings and lines one towards the gap. Could be extra bases. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. Here’s the throw and he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Oh, that’s how you respond. Cleanoff man comes up, gets into scoring position. Now, there are several ways that they can get this run across. Substitution now at second base. On a pinch run, Ezekiel Durant go ahead run on base. Jonah stepping in for the Rangers. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Brian King up and loosening in the pen. Do Santos also getting ready. on the ground to first. Walker a flip to the pitcher covering. Now one gone in the ninth. Not a bad outcome in that spot. The runner moves up to third and now they have a chance to drive in the go-ahead run. It’s not a knock, but at the end of the day, it’s a good at bat. So the go-ahead run in scoring position. So next to hit for Texas, Dylan Moore. First pitch just misses. Definitely a strikeout situation right here. Lots of ways for that go-ahead run to score if the ball’s put in play. 4-4 in the ninth. So many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. so hard to play catchup. [Music] Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball with a go ahead run at third here in the top of the ninth. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Strike three. Got him swinging. Huge strike out there. Oh, that’s a huge strike out right there. Big second out. Infield was in. They were playing the fullcourt press and he got the swing and miss. Keeps this one tie. This next at bat should be a lot of fun. The odds of wiggling out of this just went up considerably. And now it’s the Rangers leadoff hitter. That one missing inside. Durant at third with two away. The shorts stop takes the ball. [Music] And that one fouled off. I want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good. That one catches the zone. And that’s strike two. [Applause] spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another runner at third. Two away. [Music] And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Applause] Next offering misses. And it’s three and two. Wyatt Langford in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. He walked him and that will keep things going. very close off the outside corner. Could have easily been called a strike in that location. Wyatt go ahead run is at third and the batter now Wyatt Langford. He’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors. Swings through that. Wow. No fair right there. I mean that slider didn’t move till the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pit. That one finds the zone. No balls, two strikes. He’s falling behind in a huge spot. Boo. Got to do what it takes to come through. And a swing and a miss. They miss a big chance to take the lead here late. So they strand a pair. 678 scheduled to start the bottom of the ninth and we are tied 44. All set for the bottom of the ninth. And stepping in for the Astros, Jake Meyers. Right through there for a strike. Some activity in the bullpen for Texas. Carl Edwards Jr. The closer of the staff is throwing. Slapped the other way. Foul. [Applause] misses down and away. [Music] Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. And there’s one down. Now batting designated hitter Victor Keratini. And the batter now Victor Keratini. And the first pitch misses for ball one. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. And it’s just fouled. That was close. clips the corner. One and two. One ball, two straight. Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. And now the winning run is on base. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. Well, there’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. Now, the catcher up to hit. Yiner Diaz at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. One down, winning run on first. swing and a miss and a count is 0 and two. From a pitcher’s perspective, that’s a beautiful splitter right there. As a hitter, you don’t like it, but he’s commanded his fast ball and out of that same tunnel, that splitter comes and the bottom just falls out of it. Outside low now one and two. [Applause] line drive tries to get back and save. They couldn’t have asked for a better out. Makes a great play on the line drive and they keep the runner at first. Just like that, they’re almost out of the inning. Sanchez. Now the left fielder, Jesus Sanchez. [Applause] And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there. But left the bat on his shoulder. [Music] Trying to send this extra innings. Ball one there. [Music] gets a piece and stays alive. [Music] Tied at four. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That’s the third out and we’ll play extra innings in this one. So, they can’t come up with the winning run and that means we’ll have to go a little longer here tonight to find a winner. And we are tied 4-4. Back now and we’re in extras. A new arm on the mound here in the top half of the inning. Brian King. And if you dig into his walk rate, runner in scoring position, no outs. Jock Peterson now at the plate. One for four with a double. The pitch. There’s the strike. Next offering is in for a strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Next offering upstairs. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you can get hurt. And it’s second foul ball. Still a one and two count. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Jake Burgerer stepping in for the Rangers. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. Action in the pen down there. Steven Ochre getting loose out there. Do Santos also throwing. That misses the zone and the count is one and one. [Music] Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. down. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Nice work there to get the strike out. And that’s a big second out. I’ll tell you, this home crowd will be fired up. They can get out of this and leave that go-ahead run stranded in scoring position. This is a big moment in this game. Up next for the Rangers, Adoleis Garcia and fouled off. [Music] [Applause] on the ground. Base hit into center field. Runner around third. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single and they’ve got the lead an extra innings. Well, that at bat had a lot of pressure riding on it. So, really great job coming through right there. It’s got to feel good. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. So, two down. Next up for Texas, Alejandro Ozuna. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. That clips the corner. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Swings and misses and he’s gone for the fourth time tonight. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now a 54 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Carl Edwards Jr. A chance at his first save of the year. Number 52, Carl Edwards Jr. at the plate. Jeremy Pñena singing. He’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Oh, just look at the back of my bubblegum card. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that can really sharpen things on the outer half, those are the ones that become elite. So, the tying run at second. That one almost got him. [Applause] That’s good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. Hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. [Applause] That’s in there. And now three and one. Well, comfortable or not, these are the situations closers they seem to live for. I mean, you get into some hot water, a jam, tough spot, whatever you want to call it, but this is where they earn their keep. Ball four. He walked in and that keeps things going. Pretty much the last thing you want from your bullpin arms or free passes, especially in spots like this. Make the team earn their way on. Looks like we’ve got a substitution at second. on the pinch run for Houston. Zack Cole, first and second, no outs. Now the number two hitter, Cam Smith, getting his first plate appearance here in extra innings. He entered the game as a pinch runner and that one just misses a ball and no strikes. Here we go. Let’s go a swinging a foul out of play. swings and misses. One and two. Got him looking. And that is a big first out. I can’t argue with that one. And clearly he was looking for something else. Anything but the breaking ball. It’s a great pitch to hit right there if you’re looking for it. And kind of a gift in a two- strike count, but sometimes you just get fooled and you got to tip your cap. And here comes Carlos Koreah. [Applause] That one catches the corner for a strike. Let’s go. Two on, one out. Misses and a count. One and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. [Applause] Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Music] Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. And a swing and a line drive at a right field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two down. Now batting second base Jose Alu. Astros down to their last out. And here now is the Astros cleanup hitter. Jose Altuve trying to deliver as the hero. There’s the strike. And that’s outside. Come on now. Edwards is just one strike away. swing and a miss and that’s the ball game. Well, this is a big win on the road and going extras into 10. Uh so hard to pull those out, but I think this team did a great job of keeping the crowd out of the ball game late. When you can do that, it kind of calms everything down, keeps the adrenaline of the opposing team down a bit, and you can steal a win and get out of here happy. Close one here today and your final 54. A oneun extra inning win for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami.
