🔴LIVE 🔴Toronto Blue Jays VS Tampa Bay Rays /September 17/Mlb Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25
Tampa Bay. The show has an AL East matchup. It’s the Toronto Blue Jays taking on the Tampa Bay Rays. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. [Music] [Applause] Tampa Bay Race. So, almost ready to get underway. And today on the hill, Adrien Howser and Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. George Springer, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. One ball, one strike. Swing and a miss and a count. One and two. Man, that was pretty gross right there. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Slider got him for strike three. That was a tough slider right there. He couldn’t get a piece of it just to try to keep the atbat alive. And hitters will tell you that slider when a guy’s able to really tunnel the pitch where it looks like a fast ball and then late has a really good bite. So tough to lay off of because you’ve made the decision you don’t want to get beat by a fast ball and then you swing and you miss. You go back to the dugout shaking your head. Line drive base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Batting third base Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Now he’s been on fire at the dish lately. Batting average this month over 400. And that drops in for a strike. [Applause] Next offering misses and the count is one and one. hammered. And this one could be extra bases. Into second with a double and they’ve got something brewing now. Batting fourth, the designated hitter, man. Singi, he hit that ball right on the sweet spot. According to Stackcast, the exit VO 110 mph. Yeah, Boog. I mean, that right there is an absolute missile. And he just put a great swing on it. Squared it up perfectly. Those are the ones that feel really good. So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Addison Barger. Ball one there. One down, runners at second and third. Check swing and he went and the count one and one. swinging a ground ball down the line and it’s foul. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Not close with that one. Three and two now. Righty delivers and a foul ball. He stays alive. Sit down. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. He’s under it. Makes the grab. Here comes the runner from third and they strike first as they take a one- nothing lead. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. Got the job done. Now the left fielder, Davis Schneider. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Guerrero stands at second with two gone. Can’t glove it cleanly. But they get the out at first. And that’ll do it for the inning. They get a run on two hits, no errors, and a man left. Onto the bottom of the first. It’s the Blue Jays one. The Rays coming to bat. Back here with my pal Singi getting the nod on the mound. Louisie Varlin. Well, what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season. So when you consider consistency, the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners, that’s critical in winning games today, especially when teams are depending on the big swing, the home run to win ball games. Bottom of the first, stepping in number 14 and a pitch. And that’s a little bit high. And it’s one and0. Come on, Chandler. The one-1 is fouled off. Caught him looking for the K. Unelievable. Yandi Diaz next to hit for the Rays. Diaz. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. and a rope into center field base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away with that fast ball. Even though it’s high velocity, you’ve got to live on the outer edges when it’s right on a tee right down the middle. Professional hitters are not going to have a problem turning it around. Runner on first with one gone. Lao at the plate. Hit hard but foul off to the left. Man at first, one away. Strike two. Boo. That’s cheddar, baby. And that one just missed off the outside edge. really good take, especially with two strikes. Struck him out without a swing. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. Well, definitely a borderline pitch right there. And he didn’t look too convinced as he headed back to the dugout. You know, those are tough ones to let go as a hitter. But with a human umpire calling balls and strikes, it’s always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes. Stepping in the long ball threat, Junior Camero. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. [Music] And that’s off the inside edge. And now it’s even one and one. Let’s go, Junior. Was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Out there to center, pulls it in on the run, and that’s the inning. The Rays strand just the one. They trail here one- nothing. All set for the start of the inning. Here’s the center fielder, Daltton Vo. Hower back to work. Vo in his fifth season, 28 years old, and he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball, born in Wisconsin. right through there for a strike. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking, I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. No, that was a pretty poor at bat. He just never got the bat off of his shoulder. I mean, you got to go up there looking to swing at some point, especially once you’re down 02. And at that point, make an adjustment. Look to put the ball in play if it’s anywhere close. And I’m just not sure what the plan was there. So, up next, Ernie Clement. Yeah, the first offering is not close. Hower not a big strikeout guy, but still very effective as far as starting pitchers go. one of those guys that involves the defense and really gets him involved in the action. Next offering is in for a strike. He moves the ball around all the quadrants of the strike zone and will add and subtract velocity and because of that he gets the weak contact. It’s all about missing the barrel of the bat. It seems like this type of guy is kind of a dying breed nowadays. Well, exactly. When teams are looking for high velocity, high strikeout rates, a guy like this doesn’t necessarily do that. So, in order to really appreciate how good he is, you have to see him because if you’re just looking at a stat sheet, you might overlook him. And now it’s going to be Tyler Heinman. And that misses. And that is ball one. Two outs. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Here’s a rip to short, but he’s there for the third out. Nothing doing for the offense that time. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Blue Jays one. The Rays nothing. Back now in Tampa Bay. Now it’s the right fielder Josh Low. Josh Low. That misses ball one. One ball, no strike. That’s in there. One. And a big swing and a miss. [Applause] [Applause] Ground ball right side. Springer in plenty of time to first. That’s one out in the bottom of the second. Center fielder Jake Mangum. And now Jake Mangum seems like he’s making contact with everything lately. Hitting better than 350 this month. That’s in there. It’s 0 and one. One out. Base is empty. And that one in the air center field. Baro hauls it in for the out and there are two down. Batting seven catcher. Here’s the catcher to hit. Nick Forz, this is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. I was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense, especially at a premier position. And that’s what he does. Headed towards the corner and that’s a foul ball. The hitting’s going to come around. He’s going to figure it out. But right now, his big asset is the way he plays the game on defense. That’s off the inside corner and a count one and two and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one, that’s the one. When she elevates, guys aren’t touched it. bows it off. Still one and two. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Gets a piece and stays alive. That one just misses and the count is two and two. Got him. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. No runs, no hits, no errors. We head on now to the top of the third. It’s the Blue Jays one. The Rays nothing. Top half of the third inning. And now for the Jays. Andres Jimenez. Jimenez. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. And that one pulled foul. Well, that ball was hit pretty hard and sure had home run distance, but if you’re the pitcher out there on the mound, you executed just a long strike. You go after him and finish him off. [Music] In the air, pretty deep out to center field. Mangum sizes this one up and it’s caught for the out. And the batter is George Springer. First offering misses badly for ball one. [Music] There’s the strike. One ball, one strike. Next offering is fouled back. That’s down and in. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. Low hauls it in and there’s two away. Now batting rightielder. Two outs. Base is empty. Nathan Lucas next up for the Blue Jays. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. Just missed that one. Fouled off on the ground to the left and that’s just fouled. in the air. Left field down the line and that is that. As we go to the last of the third, at the plate now for the Rays is the DH Tristan Gray. And that’s downstairs. And that’s ball one. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. [Music] Next pitch is outside. That’s a little bit low. [Music] And that one ripped to left and foul ball. [Applause] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Music] The healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98, but a really good pass at the ball. That one ripped. Schneider ranging back and it’s off the top of the wall. Now a relay to second, not in time. That’s a leadoff double. Nice and bad right there. Not just the result, but also seeing a lot of pitches. Made him really work out there on the mound. Textbook bat control right there. Got a pitch on the outside, saw it deep into the zone and just barreled it up. Went the other way for the knock. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Williams now at the plate. good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. just misses the mark outside the zone. Man, oh man, I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. [Music] Man at second. Check swing. Now a will look down to first. Yes, he did. Down he goes on. Strikes. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. Struck out looking in the bottom of the first. Simpson. [Applause] hit on the ground to the right side and it finds its way through for a hit. Safe at the plate and the run scores all the way from second. We’re tied at one. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Yandi Diaz will hit next. He’s sitting on 99 career homers. We’ll see if this is the moment to notch number 100. [Applause] Fast ball for a strike. No ball [Applause] tied up here in the early going. Pulls that one foul. [Applause] Struck him out looking. Come on. Brandon Laauo digs in now. Second baseman Brandon Laauo. Fast ball in for a strike. 01. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. that clips the inside corner for a strike. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Two outs now one missed. fouls it back with two strikes. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first here in the last half of the third. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another Next one misses. Two balls, two strikes. The cow. Swing and a miss. And that is that. So they pick up a run on two hits. No errors and a man left. Three innings complete. All tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the first baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. and downstairs. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. line drive caught. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Barger batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitch. Oh, that pitch got away from him. And that’s a hit by pitch. Now batting. So up next for Toronto, Davis Schneider 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time. Ground ball right side. Could be two to second for one. Return throw to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. And midway in the fourth, all tied 1-1. New pitcher on now, Trey Savage. Well, they didn’t get much length out of their starter in this one, so they’ve got a lot of outs to eat up in that bullpen. I think they’ll look for some length out of him right here if they can get it. Now, here’s the Tampa Bay cleanup hitter, Junior Camo. Junior Camero. And that one a little below the knees. Ball one. Activity in the bullpen. Shane Bieber, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Nance also throwing check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. One ball. One strike. [Music] And that skips in the dirt. Ah, that hit him and the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning. So digging in Josh Low. He’s 0 for one. Josh Low. and takes low for ball one. Camero gets his lead at first. Nobody out. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes. Swing and a miss. Throw and they got him. Well, I think that was a hit and run right there. When you look at how far that pitch was out of the zone and the hitter still trying to put wood on it, put it in play, that tells you that they had something going. But unfortunately, it was a good job of execution by the pitcher and the catcher to get that out of the zone and then throw out the runner at second base. Really nice job behind the dish. And that’s in for a strike. All tied up. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That one down the line and it goes just foul. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Down and in. Moved his feet. Oh, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here. 22. He’s already seen the curve ball couple of times in this at bat. So, might have it timed up and ready for it. And that one hammered. Bartow on the move. And in one hops the wall around second now going for three. The relay throw in there safely. He was all over that one. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. [Applause] One down, runner at third. Digging in, it’s the speedy outfielder Jake Mangum. Fly to center his first time. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. You know, this guy’s great speed is in the back of that pitcher’s mind. If he can get on, it’s going to give him one more thing he’s got to think about. Let’s go. Just missed. [Music] In the air, right field, and that’s a fair ball in to score is the runner from third. It’s 2-1. Well, he didn’t get much of that one, but it’s going to look like a line drive in the box score tomorrow. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. Just kind of muscled it out there. And, you know, on the mound, it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. One out, runner at second. And here is Nick Forez. And that’s outside and it’s one and0. That one hooked. Foul. Runner at second here. One gone. Hit on the ground to short. Jimenez over to first. Two out. Come on now. Now batting designated hitter. Tristan. So now here’s the DH. Tristan Gray doubled his first time. swings and misses. It’s 0 and one in the on deck circle. You really want to use that opportunity to see some pitches and time up the fast ball. Last thing you want to do is miss a good hitable fast ball early in the count. Next offering is in for a strike. battling here as he fouls it away. Man on second, two down. And look out. That one gets him. The second man he’s plunked in this one. Carson Williams getting ready to hit. out to short. Jimenez throws to first and that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. Rays get an RBI double and this is now a 2-1 ball game. Back after this on the show. We go to the top of the fifth. And now for the Jays. Daltton VO. Hower back to work and there’s a foul ball. Well, these Blue Jays just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one. Just one extra base hit for him. So, they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. Next offering is downstairs. Knocks that one away and will do it again. And a swing and a miss. He’s notched four strikeouts now. So up next, Ernie Clement. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. And that one fouled off. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range. Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. And the first two set down in the top of the fifth catcher, Tyler Hineiman. And here’s the catcher, Tyler Heinman. He’s 0 for one. Well, on the mound, very efficient, able to produce an outcome it seems like within the third or fourth pitch of just about every at bat. And that drops in for a strike. Grab ball up the middle. Oh, he gloves it. throws from his knees on the money. Nice play. That was a great job of doing the math. He had the perfect angle. Diving stop completes the play and that ends the inning. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the fifth and stepping in is the speedy number 14. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike inside. Just missed. And a swing and a line drive into right field. Lucas makes the catch and there’s one down. Now batting first base Yandi Yandi Diaz next to hit for the Rays. Possibly thinking about home run number 100 here. He’s just one shy of that milestone. And first offering is fouled off. Diaz in his seventh season, 33 years old and he was born in Cuba. And that one wrapped foul. Base is empty. One away. Last half of inning number five. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And now two gone. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. And stepping in for the Rays, Brandon Laauo, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. That one ran inside. Almost got him. Two out. Space is empty. Cut on and missed. And it’s a strike out. And that is the inning. Rays held in check here, but they still lead it two to one. Back here at Tropicana Field, top six. And now for the Jays. Andres Jimenez. That one hit to right [Applause] and out. Number one on the grab. Almost a loud start to the inning on that first pitch. Man, he’s going to want that one back. No doubt. And it’ll be George Springer to step to the plate. Bowl for two in this one. Just missed. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Ryan Baker getting loose out there. Clevenger getting loose as well. Blue Jays down a run. [Music] way outside and the count two and one and that one is inside. 3-2 now. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball, dives, and he can’t hang on. And they have their first hit since the first inning. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Just a solid swing right there. Caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. Now the number two hitter, Nathan Lucas. Out of line out towards center. Squeezes it and there’s two away. Now batting the first base, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. And the Rays manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Adrien Hower gives way and a nice effort out of him. No doubt. New arm coming on. We’ll be back for that in a moment. Now pitching Joe Bole gets the ball now and he’ll feature a hard slider to work off his fast. Here’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. So clutch you could argue that he’s been this team’s MVP this year. Singy. He’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Well, just look at the back of my bubblegum card. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that can really sharpen things on the outer half, those are the ones that become elite. Two outs. swing and a foul back and that’s out of play just outside. It’s a ball and two strikes. Too close for me partner to take that O2 fast ball, but for whatever reasons he let it go by. He’s still in the at bat. I don’t think he’ll let the next one go. That’s down and in. A slider missed. Two strikes. Got him looking and he did not like the call. So a job well done by the Rays bullpen. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. It’s the Rays two and a Blue Jays one. back now in Tampa Bay. Bottom of the six, now to third baseman. Junior Camro swing and a highf fly ball down the right field line. Stretches out and hauls it in. Gotta love the over the shoulder catch. I tell you what, those are really fun to make. Josh. And now the right fielder Josh Low. Hey, what do you say now? That’s a strike. Toronto’s bullpen with some action. Sir Anthony Dominguez, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Ripped to short on to first. Two away. Now batting center fielder J. Now up for Tampa Bay. Jake Mangum. Let’s go on the ground right side and foul ball. One, two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth. Swinging a miss and it’s one and two. One ball, two strikes. And there’s a ball. Next pitch is downstairs. [Applause] Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. That is the inning. Now on the mound for the Rays, Garrick Clevenger. He’s been so good against lefties. Clevenger. [Applause] And now to the plate. Here’s the Toronto DH Addison Barger. [Music] First offering and it just misses. looking to get the tying run on base. Little bit low. Ball two. Fouled off. He was late. Just missed. Davis Schneider in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here and the 3-1. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. No outs. Runner at first. Here’s the left fielder, Davis Schneider. inside. Just missed. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. At 96, that pitch is in for a strike. That one is absolutely belted. [Applause] That’s down. One hops off the wall. Runner around third. He’ll score and they’ve tied it. Big RBI for him right there. I could watch base hits like that one all day long and so could every hitting coach in the league. Just a nice line drive into center field. Really important at bat coming up now. So the go-ahead run is into scoring position and now the center fielder Dalton Vo and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. and he takes one right on the black. 0 and2 quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. Go ahead run in scoring position. Nobody out. [Applause] Got him. And one away. Up next for the Blue. And next for Toronto, Ernie Clemens. Listen, there’s absolutely no reason to pitch to this guy right here. You nibble, you see if he’ll expand his zone, but don’t give him anything to hit. Looks like they want to set up the double play. Intentional walk will make it first and second with one gone. Tyler and the Rays manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Garrick Clevenger done for the night. And it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Ian Seymour gets handed the rock out of the pen and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. First and second, one out. Hineman now at the plate. definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. In the air, right side. Low hustling after it. Couldn’t get to it before it dropped. Foul at the dish. Looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play. Next offering in there for a strike and that is strike two. Ground ball left side could be two over to Lao. Not in time at first. It’s a fieldielder’s choice. Well, that’s great hustle out of the box to get down the line knowing that a double play will end the inning. Good job at the finish reaching out for the bag. Now they got runners on the corners and still an opportunity to pick up some runs. Jimenez in the box now. Takes strike one in the air left side. He’s under it. drops into the glove and that’s the third out. But a run will score in the inning on this RBI double. Edward deadlock now at two apiece. Major League Baseball is on the show. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Number 56. And he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. Here’s the catcher, Nick Forez. Catcher Nick Forz to the right side, Guerrero. And he handles it himself for the out. Now batting the designated hitter, Tristan Gray. Tristan Gray next to hit for the Rays. Here we go. Race way high with that one. One and0. And another ball. [Music] in the air center field and that quickly two away. Hey man, four pitches, two outs. That is an excellent pace. Now batting number seven. So, next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Carson Williams out to center. Carous. And that is the inning. Three up, three down for him there. Eighth inning coming up. We are tied 2-2. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Brian Baker should be a good first matchup for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Here’s George Springer to start it off. One for three. He’s a big strong guy. can untie this game with one swing [Applause] that just misses. And that is ball one. You can expect this hitter to be looking for something on a TE. He can get up in the air and untie this ball game. Next offering is in for a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Pete Fairbanks warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Jacks getting cranked up as well. [Applause] [Music] Punch him out. Swing and a miss. That’s a strike out. Slider got him for strike three. Oh, that Slider was way out of the zone. And for me, it just comes down to not seeing the pitch out of the hand, not tracking it into the zone, and then also being a little bit anxious, not confident in your two strike approach. And so, when a guy’s in that position, you get him to commit early, and a lot of times you get the swing and miss as you did right there. Now, it’s the right fielder, Nathan Lucas. Edge of the zone, called a strike. Go and one. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. hit hard on the ground to short. Throws across the diamond. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. Up next for the Blue Jays, first base. And here’s the first base, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., known for his late inning heroics. turned on, but that’s foul down the third baseline. [Music] [Applause] [Music] And he’s down 02 as he swings through it. You tie a guy up like that, you’re feeling like you are in command. [Applause] and down on strikes and the Blue Jays go down one, two, three. Nothing doing it for the Blue Jays. Score remains deadlocked at 2-2. Bottom of the eighth. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter number 14. Now, this guy, a player that if he gets on base, has the ability to really be aggressive getting around the base paths. That’s in there. That’s strike one. It’s good speed at the top of the order here. You want to get it on. See if you can get a stolen base. Maybe get around the bases and pick up a run. Swinging a foul out of play. [Music] That misses. Going to count one and two. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count and a base hit. The leadoff single and the go-ahead run is aboard. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front, ripped it into the outfield. That’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. And the batter now, Yandi Diaz. [Music] A one down and ball one. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in. And he spits on that one. And that is out of play with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Oh, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. That misses the zone and now it’s three and two. So, here we go. Base runner at first. Could be running on the pitch. He’s got good enough speed to steal the bag to get in scoring position even if it’s a swing and miss at the plate. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. The go-ahead run aboard at first. Nobody out. Swinging a drive deep right field. That’s back there and it’s off the wall. Lead runner touches second headed for third. Coming home. The relay to the plate. It’s offline and he scores. 32. They take the lead. Well, that’s a big swing of the bat. Driving in the run with the two bagger. Fast ball off the plate a little bit, but a really nice job of going with it. Punched it to the opposite field for that knock. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Here’s the second baseman. Brandon Laauo. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. Well, these Rays digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already. And even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. This one ripped but fouled to the right. Fly ball down the line and no one can get to it. It’s a foul ball. Center field. Varo moving under it. Makes the catch and there’s one gone. Junior Camro next to hit for the Rays. Well, he’s been having a great year this year and hitting home runs at a good clip and the matchup is very favorable. Intentional walk coming here and that sets up the double play possibility with one away and runners at first and second. And stepping in for the Rays, Josh Low. Oh, in the air on the infield and the infield fly is called. Now batting center fielder Jake Mangum. Jake Mangum next to hit for the Rays. [Applause] Just missed. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. Two on, two outs. Right through there for a strike. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Rays get an RBI double. Last chance coming up for the Blue Jays. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Pete Fairbanks. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year, and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. Well, one-run game. Digging in, Addison Barger. inside and that’s ball one. He never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. [Applause] Up and in at a count now two and nothing. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. swings and misses and it’s two and one. He can live up in the zone all game if hitters will chase it. That’s just too much velocity. Hitters got to look down in the zone. Two and one now. And that one fouled off. Looked like he got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, want to stay up the middle that way if you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. You’re a little late. opposite field knock line drive. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one away. Man, that’s so frustrating. You hit the ball hard. You understand the situation. You want to get on base and try to score that tying run, but no reward right there and just going to have to sit on it. Schneider up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. Fast ball for a strike. Well, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. swinging in a high-fly ball left field. He’s got it. And there’s two down. Now batting the center. One out left for the Blue Jays. Now a chance for Dalton Vo for three with three strikeouts. Well struck right field. That one hops against the fence. throws to second and now the tying run is into scoring position. Well, he’s been having a hard time just putting the ball in play in this one. So, that should help soften the blow. Nice line drive to the pole side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. Now, that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. Ernie Clement will hit next trying to deliver as the hero. fouled off down the right side. Well, comfortable or not, these are the situations closers they seem to live for. I mean, you get into some hot water, a jam, tough spot, whatever you want to call it, but this is where they earn their keep. So, the tying run at second fought off foul. [Applause] Fairbanks is just one strike away. And now a flare into left and it’s just fouled. That was close. Swing and a miss. And that’s the ball game. Well, this turned out to be an exciting, very well played game. Always feels great when you can take the lead in the eighth at home. Come out in the ninth, crowd will be behind that pitcher as he tries to get those final three outs. Everybody goes home happy with a win like this. 32 the final score. They hang on to win it by a run. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
