Which Winnipeg Jets Prospects SOARED During The Prospect Showdown In Montreal?
After a weekend of fun in Montreal, Winnipeg’s youth put on a pretty impressive show, but a couple of folks really stood out as rising above the rest. Enter Danny Zilkin, Winnipeg Jets prospect. Tonight’s episode, we are following up and continuing our discussions post prospect showdown. Yes, we are going to chat about some individual performances. I know I said not to read too much into it, but listen, right, there were still some really big performances and I think a couple really stood above the rest and honestly, you should get excited about uh one guy in particular, Danny Zilkin. Uh Zilkin’s foot uh fingerprints uh were really all over this this game. I guess you could say rather than footprint or fingerprint, you could argue skate print. Uh he was just awesome this weekend. But of course, he wasn’t the only guy who did really well. We’ll chat about some of the goending how it’s going to play out in the future for the Jets. And overall prospect stock, I guess movement, you know, we did a a bit of a similar thing last week. Now it’s time to figure out who looks ready for this upcoming season. But Danny Zilkin, man, if you were talking about a guy who looks ready for the year, this dude is fired up and ready to go. Uh, Zilkin’s kind of been on the perimeter of my my I guess consciousness for a while now. In part because you looked at him looked at him as maybe like a potential future fourthline center. And Zilkin’s always kind of had a very high offensive motor and he also has enough skill to be um a a peripheral scorer, right? somebody who might drop, you know, 20 to 30 points if things really went well uh went really well in like an NHL season. But then the past couple of years happened on his departure for G um and or departure from G and you know he he went to the Moose. Uh the first year was kind of riddled with injury. The second year, you know, last season didn’t really go super well either. Uh obviously the moose were just bad across the board and so I think a lot of that sort of bled into stuff and Zilken kind of spending the last couple of years uh bouncing between injury and healthy status plus a team that’s been bereft of talent recently. It just put a lot of I think pressure on his shoulders. And so coming into this prospect showdown I was curious to know which version of will we see? and he resoundingly told us that he wanted to be the best player for the Jets. Uh he was fast, he was strong, um he was winning faceoffs, he was creating offensive opportunities, he notched four points in two games, and like I know that it’s against other prospects, right? This is not going to be a fully pro tournament, but I think the fact that you could outperform a guy like uh Demidov who was just unbelievable for the Habs and did really well also against the Suns in both games on back-to-back nights while actually getting even better against Ottawa. I think is really a testament to him saying that he’s ready for the season. And if Zilken actually parlays a strong start in these preseason moments into something that’s really tangible for this upcoming Moose season, not only is it great for the Jets, uh, but I think it’s also really important for this prospect pool. Winnipeg’s center depth, to be honest, doesn’t have a lot of high-end elite talent. And Zilkin was never going to be a guy who was going to drop, you know, a McKinnon level performance, right? That’s not what you’re looking for from him. but he had a lot of potential to be a really solid middle to bottom six option and I think he has shown that he’s not ready for people to write him off. He was maybe a little bit of a longer shot coming into the season, but I’ll tell you what, if this first couple of games for the prospect showdown is anything to go by, Join has really stepped it up and is ready to go. Uh honestly, I’ve been rooting for him for a while now off the ice. I know he has some foundation stuff that he does and uh he just seems like he’s really good with the fans. Um he’s got a very natural leadery sort of disposition and so it’s just awesome to see him do well. He I I think could have a really big year for the Moose. Uh I know Manitoba’s roster depth is definitely improved from last year and in fact I think there’s actually going to be real competition for roster spots uh especially up front. So, you know, no one’s a lock necessarily, but if Zoken keeps doing this stuff, you know, I wouldn’t be shocked if he maybe earned some top six time. You know, Joerger, I thought, looked pretty solid in this tournament, uh, but didn’t look like he was ready to immediately slide into, you know, a top six role. So, if Zulkin can kind of parlay all of this and show that he’s ready to start taking on more responsibility for Manitoba, that can only be a positive thing. And the Jets, I’m sure, would love for him to really hit it off this year and show that he can become maybe a fixture of the Jets middle or bottom six in the next couple of seasons. Uh that I think would be awesome. I’ve not really felt like we’ve seen the best of Danny just yet. Uh certainly from the Moose perspective and I was just kind of waiting for him to start to really break out. I know the last couple of years have been a bit of a struggle, but recently, you know, we’ve seen a lot of young players have a hard time uh getting used to the pro level even in the AHL. It’s not a fast easy adaptation. Uh the skill barrier is higher than than it’s ever been for um excuse me, for professional hockey. So, you know, making it in either tier is is really impressive. And I think Zhoken has started to maybe find his feet. I I don’t know what changed this off season. I don’t know if he just um maybe adjusted his training regimens or whatever, but he looked really dynamic. He looked fast and uh against some really talented other prospects that he was going against, he won his matchups. And against Ottawa in particular, I think he really showed off um some deaf footwork. You know, his top gear was pretty fast, I thought. Um we’ll have to see how it goes. maybe against AHL and uh NHL skaters again, but he’s already had that experience of at least AHL performers, so he knows what that’s like. And you know, the the other thing that stood out was that he just made a lot of really smart small plays. You know, he was there to crash the net when he needed needed to. Uh he was there on the back door when there was a good opportunity. He made some smart plays off of goalie pads. Uh he had a couple of good shooting opportunities, some solid passes. I just think he did a lot of the details plays really well on top of some really powerful drives and then to see him grow in confidence in the second game to where you know in the first game yes he did score those goals and that’s really impressive but I think it was actually his second game that felt more complete from top to bottom. Uh he was driving offense he was creating stuff in transition. This was just the Zilken that I think a lot of us have honestly been waiting for and from the postgame interviews it seemed like he was feeling really good. So, you know, if he keeps this up and he has a really big year with the Moose, the Jets might have a real sleeper prospect in him, maybe, you know, that that thought about him being a bottom six center ends up being a little bit low. We’ll have to wait and see. Uh, but he’s always had the potential to be uh a guy who could be a bit of a sleeper hit, maybe a quiet gem that grows into something really cool for the Jets. Um, I just want him to have a healthy successful year. uh even if it doesn’t work out as as well as we’d hope uh this coming season. You know, at least he’s finally finding some consistency, it seems like he’s ready to go. And if anything, you know, it seems like uh the past couple of years have been rough enough to where anything that he does this season could be a huge step forward. So, I’m excited for him. I think a lot of you should be keeping a closer eye on him. He’s got enough skill to be really fun. Uh you know, he’s he’s dynamic. He’s got great uh acceleration and he was breaking away from people in the Ottawa game despite being, you know, on the second night of uh back-to-back outings. He he still looked like he had energy to burn and I think it just shows he’s fiery. He’s ready to fight for a spot this year. And I wonder what he does in preseason, right? Uh you know, does he try to fight not only for a moose spot, but try to make his stamp on the Jets roster? You know, obviously I haven’t really thought about that too much because I think the Jets generally speaking aren’t going to be looking to add more than, you know, one rookie at most. And that’s really kind of fringe u at best. But maybe Zoken can have a really productive preseason and impress the brass in a way that I don’t think any of us would have anticipated. It’s a long shot, but you know, every prospect that gets drafted late is always a long shot and Jokin has had you you could argue a nonlinear path. um the past couple of seasons. So, rooting for him. Have you know hopefully he has a big year at whatever level he’s playing at and uh really excited and inspired by his performance so far. Speaking of inspiring performances, I wanted to spend some time talking about the goalie pipeline. It looks really freaking good for the Jets. The NFL season is here and FanDuel is making sure you’re ready for kickoff with a can’t miss offer. Right now, new customers can bet just $5. And if your bet wins, you’ll get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. If you are ready for uh football action, obviously the past couple of weekends have been crazy. Maybe you bet on the Ravens having a bounceback weekend against the Browns, uh I certainly uh was a little bit hesitant, but if you bet just $5 and it was your first time, you won $300 in a big way. Now, for me, maybe my skepticism was going to take over, but you know what? Now that the Ravens are starting to roll and I feel good about the Lions game, it’s time for me to put my money where my mouth is. But maybe you think you’ve got the read on maybe the Minnesota Vikings rebounding after a tough loss uh against Atlanta. Or you’re a Cowboys fan who feels like they can parlay this success against the Giants into something meaningful. The only way you can get on on the action is to download the FanDuel app now by visiting fandle.com to get started. That’s fuel.com to place your first $5 bet. Hey friends and welcome back to this episode of Locked on Winnipeg Jets, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Every day, thank you so much for joining us in tonight’s episode as we are chatting a little bit about some takeaways from the prospect showdown and broadly speaking, if there’s one thing that I think a lot of us Jets fans have sort of felt the past couple of years with Winnipeg’s prospect pool, it’s that it’s pretty solid when it comes to depth across the board. Uh but the goalending depth in particular seems to be doing really well. Uh we saw Deven Centis and of course uh Alex Worthington who’s relatively new to the system and you know Militch is uh probably going to be backing up with the Moose this year or with Norfolk wasn’t part of this tournament but I’m sure we’ll see him this season. So, uh, the Jets have a pretty nice goalie tandem, uh, you know, going for Manitoba and likely just a really deep prospect pool in general for goalies. And it makes me wonder as the Jets keep graduating these guys to the pro levels, you know, obviously Heluk has the net for however long he wants to keep playing in Winnipeg, uh, this guy is probably going to be a perennial, uh, Vznik contender for many years to come. I don’t see him slowing down unless he injures himself or something happens and you know the only other thing that could happen is he decides he just wants to leave Winnipeg which uh I don’t really think is a thing. So, uh, Heli has the net for the starter role, but when it comes to the backup and stuff, there’s a lot of movement there, right? And I think a guy like, you know, Dantis in particular is starting to really show signs of being uh potentially a really good number two. And he’s done well enough in the pros already to where I’m starting to think maybe even uh you think about him being potentially a trade ship for somebody. you know, if Militch does well as a backup or as maybe a 1B sort of scenario, do you wonder if Steven Centettes is is maybe moved to try and bring in help elsewhere? Goalie trades usually don’t give you a lot of value. And so for me, I I think it’s just better to have them in Winnipeg system and not elsewhere. But we all know that teams are occasionally a little bit desperate for some goalending help. and if Deep Vanchetti, Militch, and maybe even Worthington as he starts to warm up to the system, you know, maybe one of these guys gets you some help uh elsewhere on the team because Winnipeg in net is really deep and it makes me wonder, you know, as we continue to uh move down the pipeline over the years, uh can the Jets keep this staff as together as possible? We’ve had changes to the amateur scouting staff before, but the goalending uh scouting team, whoever does this, has done such a remarkable job setting the Jets up for success over the next several years to where uh you really hope that they retain him. Uh or her, whoever it is, you know, I don’t know who it is off the top of my head, but the goalending scouting staff, it just has been elite. I don’t think there’s any other way to describe it, you know, from Hellob Hutchinson even getting some looks. uh you had a couple of years where the prolevel staff maybe tried to make Steve Mason and other guys like that work, but the amateur development track has been fantastic. So, uh, really hope that the Jets can keep all of this together, but you know, there’s going to be a lot of competition for this backup rule and Comry currently has it right now, but as the Jets maybe look to trim some money here and there or Comry maybe starts to slow down as he gets into his 30s, you know, there’s going to be real opportunity for somebody to eat up maybe 15, 20 starts a season from Hellbuck’s workload. And as Heli himself gets older, you know, he’s probably not going to be playing 40 to 50 games every year anymore. uh time will eventually wear him down and I think you’ll probably see maybe a goalie of uh good quality backup role start to eat some of those minutes and I think for the Jets they have plenty of guys who look like they could do the job even if they’re just league average at the NHL level I don’t think you really care it’s just somebody who can spell helluck give him some rest and keep them going for the future but all of this is just really awesome to see because I think in a lot of ways none of us have really thought about what a future without Hellabuk looks like. We had to do it before he signed his contract and I think most of us probably just puked. I know that that was my reaction of thinking of a team that didn’t have Hella Buck on it. I I just pretended it wasn’t going to happen and that’s how I got through my day. I thought it wasn’t super likely, but you know, there were moments where maybe we got a little closer than I would care to admit. So thankfully, we don’t have to imagine that scenario. Hel’s probably got the the crease for the next five to six years. I can’t really see him slowing down that early. Most goalies of his caliber stay elite for many years. Uh really, it’s just the playoff thing that continues to be a little bit of a boondoggle, but hopefully, you know, at some point in this this time frame, the Jets actually do well in the postseason with him. Uh they did so in in, you know, years past. So surely this Jets playoff team can find a way uh with Hely in a way that they used to uh when he was putting up 920s in the postseason. So uh we’ll have to wait and see if that happens. But you know at least for the the the future we have a pretty stocked pipeline and I think the Moose having a couple of really good goalies to rotate would be fantastic. They’ve already got, you know, a really stacked roster this season in terms of forward and defenders, but, you know, in net, they’ve also got a a swath of options to choose from. It’s going to be Devincentes most likely with Milich. Um, and either of those guys might actually start to really impress. I think Danchentes probably has the inside track right now. Uh Militch’s numbers at the pro levels haven’t exactly been uh crazy crazy good, but they’ve been okay enough to where you see him maybe being a backup at the AHL level uh if not a starter at some point. But of course, you know, Deven Chantis has kind of been in my mind the blue chip prospect ever since. Uh when he was drafted, I think a lot of folks were, you know, studying his footage, kind of checking out the scouting reports, and it seemed like even as goalies are voodoo oftent times, Devenentis had something kind of special. Uh he had a really crazy start to his Bmpton career, maybe things kind of slow down a little bit. But then, you know, at the pros, he’s just been uh really fun to watch. And I think for this upcoming year, I would expect him to be one of the better goalies across the whole AHL. So, awesome to see the Jets goalie pipeline do well. You know, it’ll be interesting to see if they can maybe translate some of that success to other positions because, you know, obviously the Jets get a lot of value across the organization. Uh, but they don’t have as many blue chippers in other spots. really just, you know, a couple of guys like Devanchentes, uh, Salammonson, and a few others. But, you know, that also kind of comes with drafting higher, and the Jets probably won’t do that. So, as long as they keep drafting in these lower rounds, I think Winnipeg will keep taking at least one or two stabs on a goalie. Uh, the Jets have tended to hit some real gold doing that. We know that Hellbeck was a really late draft pick. You just saw Dustin Wolf, who was a super late round pick, uh, get an, you know, a massive eight-year contract and, uh, yeah, you know, it seems like teams like these are looking for some real goalending help. So maybe if a team gets crazy enough and David Jettis or Militch or one of these guys really starts to take off and and thrive, maybe the Jets can trade them for uh, some forward or or or defender help. I I would probably prioritize forward at this point. you know, some scoring help is really uh where a lot of that extra value is. And the Jets have a surplus of goalies. Not all of them can play at the NHL level, but some of them might be able to do it elsewhere. So, great to see that. We just hope that it keeps going, that the Jets keep adding to this pool. And curious to know how you feel about having such an elite goalie pipeline. Uh do you think that the next great Hellbuck is already in Winnipeg system? Do you think that maybe Danchentis at some point replaces? Uh I I would be a little bit surprised if it ever gets to that point. Uh but you know, Hellob’s career may end before I expect it to. Maybe time catches up with him faster or or maybe he just wants to hang it up and spend time with his family uh sometime in the next few years. It’s very unlikely. He’s got a long-term contract. He just signed it not that long ago. I think he goes, you know, well into his late 30s, but we’ll have to wait and see, right? Time can make a lot of decisions for us. injuries can make a lot of decisions for us. Let’s just hope that Hellob stays healthy for as long as humanly possible so we don’t have to think about it. But curious to know your thoughts on Winnipeg’s goalie pipeline. Drop them below. We’re at my social medias at HLanglo and l Winnipeg Jets. Before we close out, I did want to spend some time talking a little bit about overall prospect stocks heading into uh you know preseason and stuff. How did we feel from the prospect showdown? Hey friends and welcome back to this episode of Locked On Winnipeg Jets, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. every day. Thank you so much for rejoining us in tonight’s episode as we’re just closing out thoughts uh post prospect showdown. You know, who’s on the up and up for the Jets pool and who maybe had some either lack of movement or or downward movement. Uh I think a lot of folks were really hoping for uh Braden Joerger to really have a crazy couple of games against other peer prospects. And what I saw from Braden was where I I don’t really move him up or down in my rankings. I think he did pretty much what I expected him to u which is have a couple of really solid shifts. I think the main thing that again stood out with him was just really smart defensive reads. I I thought that he backtracked really really well. Even if he made a mistake, he was always Johnny on the spot. Uh he was very active in the corners and along the walls. I didn’t see him winning like a ton of battles, but in general, I thought he was very engaged. I thought he was trying to create. Um and I think he did have a point or two throughout the tournament. So, uh, not a lot of opportunities to score himself, but I thought in terms of being a really, uh, good complimentary player, he was doing a lot of the small details and things really well. So, I I think he’s pretty much what I expected him to do, uh, against a mixture of like rookies and and pros. Um, I would think that his start to the Moose will be, you know, a little bit staggered. It’ll take some take him some time to work up to, you know, quality production, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he drops like a 30point season with Manitoba this year. Uh, with how much support he’ll have offensively, I just feel like it’ll allow him to be a really good facilitator, and that could be, you know, a big part of his game. So, we’ll have to wait and see for that, but I I I think his stock uh for me is moving, and that’s perfectly okay. I’m fine with that. Uh Nikita Tupacov on the other hand, his stock is trending a bit down right now and this is not really anything that he can help. Uh I think that knee injury he had really slowed him down and so these first couple of scrimmages you just see him looking like he’s very rusty and not as mobile. Uh but the thing that I think really stood out was that a lot of the the decision-m um and and timing on things was just way off. Like he had a lot of turnovers that seemed uncharacteristic of him. So, I think it’ll take him some time to work his way back. I thought he might be ready for the Jets season, you know, towards October, but I would say he’ll probably need some moose time to get up to speed. Uh, I’m a little sad for him because had his knee not given out uh from that bad hit. I think he would have been, you know, already fighting for a jet spot, but I don’t think that that’s necessarily going to happen. Maybe he starts to really find his footing in preseason, but given what we saw in in camp here, I I do think he might need some time to warm up. Probably a month or two before he starts feeling really comfortable. So, I I would not rush him. You know, let him get back to up the speed, let him warm up. Um, so he is technically down, but with a very big expectation, he’ll shoot right back up towards the top of the prospect pool uh in not too long. Uh other guys who I would say have kind of uh had some interesting movement. Uh Owen Martin I thought had pretty solid stock and I think slightly raised it for me. I I thought that he had some really good offensive shifts uh more so on the rush than anything. I thought the defensive work that he was kind of known for I noticed it here and there. I thought he was active in the corners did really well. Um so yeah, I think he had a perfectly fine prospect tournament even if he didn’t actually get on the score sheet uh from what I recall. So, pretty solid. Uh, elsewhere, you know, uh, who else really stood out? Uh, Ben Slotty I thought was fine. I thought he looked like he should come back to the Moose. Really solid tournament being a guy who’s going to be, you know, one of the more experienced Blueliners of this camp invite group. He’s already had Moose and Texas Stars time. I think he should have more moose time. He looked pretty solid. I guess you can say slightly elevated stocks. Uh, Danny Zilkin, you already know I was raving about him. Stocks shot way up. uh especially from where he was before which was you know towards the bottom of the pool just because you know I think we really haven’t had a big big enough sample size to get a sense of where he is but he’s he’s real back in the mix of this pool. I think his value is super high again. Awesome to see him do super well and hope it translates to a full year. Uh otherwise you know I I think a lot of the guys generally did most of what I expected them to do. Uh Chase Yoder might be one of the most interesting ones. Uh, and of course because he’s kind of new to the Jets pool, I don’t think I can really qualify him as um a guy whose stocks, you know, have any sort of basis. Uh, this is the first time that I’m seeing him. And, you know, as a camp invite, we don’t even know if he’s going to get a contract, but I think it’s probably fairly certain he gets an invite of some sort. Uh, I just think based on how we did in this prospect showdown and and maybe even by the time this episode’s live, he’s already gotten it because I’m recording this ahead of Tuesday. He might already have it. I I think he’s absolutely deserved it. I thought he put on a great performance. Um and looked really fun, smart, and active on the forche. Uh if he does sign a contract, I think immediately he becomes one of my more uh I would say top half of the pool guys to watch. He was fun. Uh he could be a real NHLer at some point. You know, as a bottom six guy, there’s something there. So, keep an eye out for Yodar. Uh I came away impressed. thought he looked fine and it’ll be interesting to see how he translates uh the rest of his performance. Otherwise, you know, I think for the most part, a lot of the guys that you thought would be good did well. If there’s one last player that I think is probably worth talking about, it’s it’s Kobe Barlo. Uh Barllo, I would say really shot up for me big time. I needed to see more out of his game, a more complete approach, uh some really good playmaking ability, and you know, just a well-rounded offensive game, and he delivered. I thought he had a very good tournament uh or I guess showdown if you want to call it and did a lot of the the little details and smart plays that I’d been hoping he would do. Plus, he scored himself a goal. That’s always fun. But I would say his setup play and overall forchecking ability were what really stood out for me. Uh I I thought he looked good. Uh, the only thing of course is that the foot speed’s still kind of a little bit of an issue and that may show up more with the Moose this year, but I think he should have a pretty solid season and I am excited for him uh heading into the season. So, um, Wednesday’s episode I might focus a little more on who I think is going to be uh really leading the way for Manitoba, which of the prospects are are kind of sitting on the verge of NHL time, I guess. um and who might be a little further out based on some of the stuff we’re already seeing heading into this preseason weekend. But for tonight’s episode, that’s all the time that we have. I thank you so much for listening and making Lockdown Jets your first listen of the day every day. We’ll see you back here tomorrow. So have a great night and as always, go Jets. Go.
It was an entertaining weekend in Montreal, and a number of Winnipeg Jets prospects put on quite the show for fans. Who stood out the most amongst Winnipeg’s skaters? Has Danny Zhilkin finally unlocked a new level for this upcoming Moose season? Are the Jets set for the present and future in-goal? How did prospect stocks look following the weekend of action? Did anyone look a bit rustier than expected, or were the performances what we anticipated?

Score aside they got smoked by Montreal
I would argue that Yager soared. Granted, it was because Demidov made him miss so badly that he flew through the air, but that's kind of like "soaring," isn't it?
