The dangers of overlooking (and under looking) the Memphis Grizzlies
It’s a Thursday episode of Locked on Grizzlies and the dynamic duo rides once more. The Michael Cole, Joe Mullenax here with you talking Zack Edy. When do we start worrying about that injury update that may or may not be coming? And we’re going to talk overlooked and overestimated members of the Memphis Grizzlies. Anybody that we’re not expecting enough from, or is there somebody we’re expecting too much from? All that and more on this installment of the podcast. Let’s lock in. You are Locked On Grizzlies, your daily Memphis Grizzlies podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Ah, yes. The sun shines a little bit more brightly. The birds chirp a little bit more clearly when Demich Cole and myself are back together. Mostly because Demich Cole was back on the podcast. The birds, it’s just the duo. It’s the duo. They do their best to avoid me, you know. They they look for me maybe when they have to leave a dropping here or there, but they they see Demich and it’s a sunshiny day and everybody is thrilled to have uh the dynamic duo riding once more. Mostly because that means to Michael’s on the show, but most importantly to Michael and I are excited because you’re back with us here on this episode of Lockdown Grizzlies. It’s always good to see you this time of year. It’s a little bit touchandgo, hit or miss with us, but you know, it’s it’s good to be back with you on this episode and uh I’m sure we’ll talk about, you know, some some of the players that you’re a little more excited about than me and vice versa as we work through the next 30 minutes or so here on the podcast. That’s what I love about Yeah, that’s what I love when we when we do the when we can do the episodes where we both can, you know, like people like that too, Joe. They you I think you see it in the comments sometimes, but then people tell me like, “Hey, they like when there’s a little back and forth from time to time.” And uh you know, we can’t really do that when it’s one of us. So, uh yeah, I’m I’m looking forward to this show. And I had to make sure that you and I weren’t around each other for a long enough amount of time posters. post Packers Commanders. So, I I wouldn’t get too much uh too much trash talk from you. Deserve trash talk. The Packers were very clearly better than the Commanders in that contest. It’s a good team. Still got a good team. Commanders are going to be good. Commanders have a few months to figure it out. Uh but anyway, I I digress. Um we will jump right in with, you know, you had an episode recently, partner, talking about Jiren Jackson Jr. and the positive news, maybe some good good enter or injury. uh conversation perhaps going into training camp here in a couple of weeks. Haven’t heard a ton about Zach Edi. No. Right. And I think that this is a good opportunity. Somebody in the comments mentioned it a day or so ago. Might be a good opportunity for us to kind of refresh. Where are we with Zack Edy? Obviously, his recovery was always kind of seen as a longer term more sort of thing. Um but going into the start of training camp, obviously around the end of the month, there will be media day and all that sort of stuff. Where do you see Zack Edy? And again, not necessarily asking for new reporting, but at what point do we as Grizzlies fans, Grizzlies followers, you know, nobody’s as tuned into the Grizzlies as you? When do we start to wonder about Zack Ed’s availability even beyond the initial time frame? Or is it too early to worry about that just yet? Yeah, you wonder in about a week. Uh maybe a week and a half, somewhere around there. I think we’ll start to get more answers, more clarity on where Zach Edi is here in the next week. I I think uh when you look at the situation, uh it’s one that we’ve kind of we’ve we’ve talked about extensively on the show from the standpoint of yes, it’s left ankle injury. Uh they opted to get the surgery. Uh this is something that they really didn’t have to do, but it’s more so a situation where they want to get this problem out of the way. So, we’re not talking about two or three times during the season, uh, you know, Zack Edy having an injury, you know, with his ankle and kind of re-rolling it, reinjuring it or whatever the case may be. So, this is just a situation where, um, you you want to kind of get out in front of it and, uh, have it under control going. So basically how I’m looking at this situation is uh Zakiti if you go through the history right uh we we talked about other players who’ve had a similar injury and in those cases those players come back early in the season some have been back at the beginning of the season but what we do know what I know talking with people with the Grizzlies and whatnot is they want to be careful that should be no surprise to anyone who’s followed the Grizzlies the last 5 10 whatever uh many years especially in this era of Grizzly basketball, they want to be careful, they don’t want to have to be worried about uh any any complications, so to speak. So, while in theory, you know, we’ve seen players have a surgery on a similar time frame, similar timeline, and be back at the beginning of the season, the Grizzly said from the from out front. That is not the plan here. Zack Edy will miss the beginning of the season. But what I’ve said and and what I’ll continue to say is I’m not expecting him uh to be out for a prolonged period of time. We will get more of an indication on what that timeline looks like, but I know people were throwing out December and and potentially like could it carry over into next year? I don’t see that. Um but we’ll get more clarity. Uh I I’ve heard, you know, that he he’s made progress and things like that, but I haven’t heard anything extensive in terms of a timeline on him. So, uh, in terms of worrying about him, I wouldn’t worry just yet. I think where we are right now is it’s wait and see pretty much until a week or two from now. We’ll get into media day. You’ll get into camp and that’s where you’ll get more answers. I’ll be out there, you know, when the team’s going through training camp. We’ll see him probably working off to the side doing his own thing and we’ll have more information at that point. I’m intrigued by how they go about this because it’s been a while since the Grizzlies have been in this situation, right? Obviously going back to Jaws rookie year, the team didn’t have massive expectations. The fact that they made the playin, they were actually part of the bubble. Uh they could have been there longer. Obviously, lots of teams were part of the bubble, but that that was not a year that people expected Memphis to be competitive, and they were relatively competitive. Obviously, Damen Lillard and the Trailblazers knocked him out that first year. The reason I bring all this up is I feel like we’re kind of returning to that a little bit where the Grizzlies, if they’re good, like if they’re the five or six seed and and and this might be something we’ll disagree on as we get closer to the season partner. I am of the mind where if they’re the five or six seed, everybody should be thrilled because this team has less talent, at least, you know, on paper than it did going into last season with Desmond Bane being gone. I don’t know that there is widespread expectation for this team to be a contender for the two seed in the Western Conference or the three seed in the Western Conference. I feel like Yeah, we’re gonna we’re going to circle back to this. I’m I’m I’m jotting this down in my head because because I just don’t have that urge like I don’t feel that like I talked about on a recent episode, my quote, you know, in the past was are we are you trying to win a championship or not? To me, Zach Kimman has made it perfectly clear he’s not trying to win a championship. I I I that I and again we’re on the same page now, right? Like I I see I see you, Zack Kleimman. I I see you. I hear you. I understand your angles. I am of the mind where I would absolutely be patient with Zack Edit. There’s no point no point in rushing back to get better, you know? Oh gosh, could they be the 10 seed or the eight seed if Zack Edi hurt his back? Who gives a crap, right? I I want to make sure that this guy is healthy first and foremost. And you know, maybe I’m off on that, but I feel like most prognosticators going into the season are going to have the Grizzlies as one of those most likely teams to fall out of the postseason hunt anyway. You don’t make decisions based off of what people on the outside think of you. But I do think it’s important to acknowledge, okay, if we’re not true championship contenders, if we truly see Zack Edy as a future piece for us, we need to make sure that he’s healthy first and foremost. Yeah, definitely got to make sure he’s healthy. And I’ve talked about in previous episodes, Joe, as we get into, you know, what we’re going to talk about later in the show. Uh, I I really think he’s gonna take a second year jump and I think it was a it was a show I did solo uh without you, but I I said that I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s on the back end of the top 100 uh next year. Look, Zack Edy, it’s not just Matt Moore will never let Zack Edy be in the top 100. Well, look, Matt Moore Mo is my guy 150th. Matt Moore, how many players are there in the NBA? 450 or something like that. It’s 300. Three. It’s It’s in the 300s, I believe. Okay. He’ll be 399. [Laughter] But it might be 450. But uh but yeah, uh I think it’s it’s going to be a combination of skill, progression, and role. Like this role that he’s going to be playing. If you go to the last nine regular season games, then you go to those playoff games, like he was routinely turning out double doubles. He was routinely getting over 30 minutes per game after with Taylor Jenkins, we never saw him, you know, uh get that type of uptick in minutes. So it was a different situation. It was a different role. And now we’re going to see that prolonged over a longer period of time uh with the emphasis on all these things that he’s already really good at. Whereas last season it was, hey, go in the corner and stand at three-point line. You didn’t do this at Purdue, but hey, trust us, this is going to work out here. It’s it’s it’s not that anymore. It’s go hit somebody, go knock these dudes down on the screen, clear the pathway for John Mor and the rest of these guards, and you get down there to the rim and and you finish around the rim like we know you’re capable of doing as you continue to get stronger, which is another thing that he’s emphasized. So, uh, look, I’m not worried about Zack Edy right now. I I think even with the injury, I I think he should he should be, uh, he he he should have a good season. He should have a really good season. I think certainly feels like a good time to buy Zack Gy stock in case it’s selling low. I agree with you on that. And and that will kind of lead in to our next part of our episode here today on Lock Dog Grizzlies. Which Grizzlies are being most overlooked going into training camp? guys that you know as the dog days of the offseason grinded out. Who have we not talked about enough here on Lockdown Grizzlies? Uh we talked a little bit about the show and I, you know, we go over the rundown and we say what we like and what we don’t like. Yeah. Yeah. Usually when I come up with an idea, I let you go first, but I’m going to cheat this time because I feel like I feel like I’ve got a good one here because this is somebody that I’m going to be a little bit vulnerable on a Thursday. I’m not going to say I forgot they’re on the team. I forgot that they are have been invested in as much as they have been because this is a player that not only got converted from a two-way to a full roster spot contract. If I remember correctly, you probably know who I’m talking about. This is somebody that the Grizzlies were like, “Oh crap, we didn’t give him enough years.” Like, they gave him an additional year if I remember correctly on that contract according to reports. And that’s Cam Spencer. M and Cam Spencer is somebody that again, I’m not going to Joe Joe’s a podcast host about the Grizzlies and he doesn’t know the roster. I knew who Cam Spencer was. All right, let’s all just clear the air here, but I did forget about him in terms of a conversation about the rotation. This is a guy you talk about wanting a dog. Cam Spencer’s a dog. Cam Spencer got in the face of Kevin Durant while, you know, being on a two-way contract. Cam Spencer can shoot the three. We know that he checks boxes for this Grizzlies team. Maybe we’re not giving Cam Spencer enough credit here to Michael Cole. Yeah, I like Cam Spencer. And and again, when you talk about role players, to me, it’s about what are you great at uh that this team needs. Uh you have to have an area of your game that you are really good at and and the team say when he comes in the game, we improve in that area. And with Cam Spencer, without a doubt, it’s his three-point shooting. when he comes into the game, he elevates this team with his three-point shooting as a role player. Uh, so I could see that. Uh, he he and he is someone because the guards are loaded. You know, they’re they’re very they have a bunch of uh quality guards. You know, you talk about Scotty Pitman Jr., Ty Jerome, John Morant, uh, Jaylen Wells, Contavius Cwell, Pope, all these guys being in front of Cam Spencer. Hypothetically, it’s going to be tough to crack that rotation. But, uh, most overlooked is for me is for a similar reason. And I and I I was about to go with a vet here, but I was like, he’s been around for a while. He ain’t he ain’t really that overlooked. Uh, but I’m going to go with one of the younger guys as well, and it’s one that me and Joe, you know, Joe, you know what I’m saying? Because we’ve kind of we’ve had our moments where we’ve been high on this guy, and it it it it it burned against us last year. It backfired on us. But I’m going to say Vince Williams Jr., uh, the thing with Vince Williams Jr. is how soon do they forget? That’s my question. How soon do they forget? Because as we a year ago at this time around this time before we found out he had the foot injury of course but roughly a year ago uh everyone was excited about Vince Williams Jr. Oh he’s going to be you know this three and D player that you could put alongside of John Moran and Desmond Bane. he’s going to be this this great defender and and it was tape that showed you go back to I always go back to that one game Joe the game John Mar’s first game back from that 25 game suspension I was there in New Orleans uh he’s he was in the starting lineup it was John Mor Desmond Bane Vince Williams Jiren Jackson Jr. And I believe Bismac Bybo was the start and center at the time. Shout out Bism Bambo getting shout out Bism. He just got a contract. Good for him. Staying alive. Really good dude. Really good dude. And when I think back to Vince Williams in that game, you you remember remember at the end of the first half he made that three-pointer and the Grizzlies were down. They were down probably 15 20 points at that point and he’s talking trash to the Pelicans guys as he’s going to the locker room and that set the tone for that comeback. and Jaw eventually makes, you know, the big time game winner uh at the buzzard or whatever and they win that game. But when I’m watching that game, because Marcus Smart was the starter at that time, and I’m like, he he fits he fits alongside of Desmond Bane and John Morant at the time. Now, the roster looks a lot different. There’s no Desmond Bane anymore. There’s no Marcus Smart anymore. And quite frankly, it’s not even because of that as to why Vince Williams Jr. is overlooked. Vince Williams Jr. is overlooked because Jaylen Wells came in as a rookie and pretty much jumped him from a priority standpoint. Vince Williams Jr. is overlooked because GG Jackson has been getting all these reps in summer league. He’s getting all these reps and his potential is so tantalizing. And Vince Williams Jr. is overlooked because the Grizzlies moved up in the draft uh with the pick that they acquired in the Desmond Bane trade and said, “We want Cedric Coward,” who is another player that plays on the wing. You got Vince Williams, you got Jaylen Wells, you got Cedric Cow. At the end of the day, all of them can’t start, but where where does he fit in? So, uh I think Vince Williams, and it’s a personality thing, too. He’s more quiet side and the injuries and whatnot. Uh and and and of course, you know, last season wasn’t his best season. So, he’s kind of become a little bit of overlooked, but I’m telling you, if the Vince Williams from two seasons ago, uh, appears, we’re going to have to have some conversations simply because when I talk about role players, especially on the perimeter, uh, the separator to me a lot of times with with the guys that the Grizzlies have, is playmaking because they can defend their butts off. They they can shoot it decently. Vince Williams can do that. Jaylen Wells could do that. Um, you know, I think to a certain degree Gi Jackson with his scoring, he gives you all of that stuff as well. But from a playmaking standpoint, when a defense says we’re zeroing in on John Moran on the perman, who can you give the ball to that can make a play for your team? I don’t trust Jaylen Wells in that situation right now. I don’t trust GI Jackson make I trust GI Jackson make a play for himself. GG Jackson can he can put the ball in the cup. But in terms of set your teammates up, uh, we haven’t seen enough of it. Like we saw Gigi Jackson’s assist numbers go up in summer league, but summer league, we need to see it more um in the NBA. But the one guy of those guys that we’ve mentioned that we’ve seen it in NBA games where he’s flirted with triple doubles where he’s had a bunch of five assist games is Vince Williams Jr. So, if you get the rebounding that you get from him, the shooting, the defense, and you get a guy who when teams pressure John Mar, he can be a guy who can uh, you know, take some pressure off and be that secondary ball handler in the way that Desmond Bane was over the last few years. Uh, that is an added attribute that other guys on the roster, you know, maybe a Tai Jerome has it, but Ty Jerome isn’t the defender that Vince Williams is capable of being. So, uh, look, he I I I can’t forget about Vince Williams yet. I’m not closing the book on that until I see him with my own eyes, Joe, in preeason and training camp and he doesn’t look the same. If he doesn’t look the same, close the book. We ain’t got to talk about Vince Williams Jr. no more because at that point, it is what it is, uh, they’re probably not going to pick up the option at the end of the season and he’ll go on into the lakeside somewhere. But if if Vince Williams Jr. plays like he did two years ago, it’s it’s some conversations that’ll need to be had. Richmond, Virginia, stand up, right? VCU Nation, stand up. Ram Nation, Vince Williams Jr. I I’m a big Vince Williams Jr. guy myself. I like Vince Williams Jr. If you remember correctly, I believe we both had him as the starter, right? He was going to be the guy that was going to supplant Marcus Smart. So, we were half right, right? Somebody supplanted Marcus Smart. It just wasn’t Vince Williams Jr. It was Jaylen Wells. Um, I am optimistic about what Vince Williams Jr. can do for all the reasons that you outlined there. I also like Vince Williams Jr. because he is somebody that doesn’t need the ball in his hands to be that impactful player. He can do it. To your point from earlier, GG Jackson, I would argue, needs the ball in his hands to maximize what GG Jackson is. Jaylen Wells doesn’t necessarily need it in his hands, but he needs somebody to get it into his hands. Vince Williams Jr. is kind of like the security blanket option. He’s both of those things. He’s not going to, you know, wow you in terms of his skill or his athleticism, but he is going to fit and mold and meld nicely with Jaw and Jiren. I I like the Vince Williams Jr. pick. I like that selection. Let Deich and I know in the comments. Hit us up on X at Michael C at Joe Mullenax. How are you feeling about the most overlooked Grizzly? I said Cam Spencer. Michael says Vince Williams Jr. When we come back here on the show, we’re going to go the opposite side of the spectrum. Who is perhaps being looked at too much? So, the opposite end of the spectrum now. We’re talking folks that maybe were we’re looking a little too heavily into going into the 2025 2026 season. I went first on the last part here. So, it’s only fair if I allow for you to take the lead on this one. Who do you think maybe you’re a little worried we’re expecting too much from them going into the campaign? Uh, this actually isn’t a hard one for me and um and I hope people don’t take this the wrong way, but I mean I just feel like it has to be said, but in terms of the way that you explained it was perfectly. Who who could we be expecting a little bit too much from this upcoming season? And for me, that’s Jaylen Wells. Interesting. And yeah, I I I don’t think that Jaylen Wells role last year and and the role that he’s going to play this season uh lends itself to the prototypical secondyear jump. Uh he’s not I don’t think Jaylen Wells is going to be in a situation where he’s going to have this big uptick in usage. You know, when when a lot of guys take that first year to second year jump, it’s more minutes. It’s the ball in their hands a little bit more. We saw it with Desmond Bane and all that. It’s not going to be the case uh with Jay Wils. I don’t think so. primarily because he’s not there as a playmaker yet. Uh some of you saw him in summer league and you had some of your concerns. I wasn’t concerned with the summer league stuff because that’s not the role that he’s going to play with the Grizzlies. They didn’t care that much. He’s not going to be dribbling the ball 10 times uh on one possession with the Grizzlies. That’s not going to happen. But at the same time, it did illustrate, it did show that this is the role that Jaylen Wells is going to play. This is the role you should expect from him. And if you if he’s asked to go outside of that role and to do much more, there will be struggles. There were struggles in summer league. And I think if you ask him, hey, let’s put Jake and um let’s put um Jaylen Wells in some pick and roll situations where he’s the primary ball handler. I don’t think that could work out for you. Not this season. So, when we talk about overestimating, I I say Jaylen Wells because you with as good of a rookie season as he’s had as he had, it’s only going to be natural for someone to say, “Oh man, he averaged, you know, now it’s time for him to average 15 points a game and and take this jump as a player and I’m looking at the skill set. I’m looking at what he’s going to be asked to do.” And I don’t see that with the role. Uh again, now if we start to see signs in the season, early in the season at some point of Jaylen Wells being this improved playmaker, then let’s revisit. But right now, based on what we know, based on what we saw in summer league, uh and these are emphasis for him. Like this isn’t me just spitballing. Jaylen Wells will tell you himself, he wants to improve his handle. He wants to improve as a playmaker. Uh these are the biggest indicators of his ceiling, so to speak. uh without that without that advanced uh you know growth as a playmaker, I don’t see him uh being that player that takes that big secondyear jump. It’s just going to be steady yeti pretty much. He’s going to be solid now. Don’t I’m not saying he’s going to be bad, but he’s going to be But if you’re going into this season right now and you’re saying, “Man, Jaylen Wells was so good as a rookie. Imagine what he’s going to be in year two.” I’m not thinking like that. I’m thinking, hey, year one was a good uh sign of what he’s going to be until he’s put in the position and until he showcases that he could be a better playmaker and he can be someone that you can play in more in a role that requires more usage that’ll allow him to show you know uh more more uh you know to his game. Now, I don’t want to put words in your mouth, but it sounds like going over the course of this episode, you think Zack Edy is in a better position to have a secondyear leap? Oh, without a doubt. Without a doubt. Without a doubt. and and and again it goes to the role. Zack Ed is going to have an improved increased role. We saw a nine-game sample size of it with with Iselo and we saw the uptick in the numbers in just that small sample size. So, we’re going to see a bigger sample size of exactly that. Whereas Jaylen Wells, we’re going to see the same thing. All right. I think I’m going to surprise you a little bit here to close out the show. Here’s my option. Uh oh. I think we’re overestimating John Morant. We are asking John Morant to be this tremendously improved player. We’re asking him to be this guy that can carry a team. We’re asking him to be this possible fringe hall of fame candidate. All of these expectations that we’re putting on this guy. Do you want to know why not? Because he’s number 28 in the NBA according to NBA top 100 players according to Lockdown. He’s number 28. If only we had Darius Garland. If only we had Trey Young. Oh, if James Harden in the year of our Lord 2025 could have been on this roster instead of John Morant, we would be in such a better place. But no, nay. I’m afraid that John Morant is number 28. He is not number 25. He’s not number 21. He is number 28. And he is being asked to be far too much according to the lockdown NBA top 100 players. Sorry, I just had to do it again. It’s It’s totally Jaylen Well, I had you in the first half. I had you in the first half. You had me. You had me. I had you. You thought I was going to I was about to lose it. I was about to lose. You thought I was going You thought I was going for clicks. You thought I was going for downloads with Stephen A. Smith in that thing. No, man. No. I I agree with you completely. It’s totally Jaylen Wells. I just wanted to get one last dig of that terrible ranking of John Morant. Uh uh it it’s Jaylen Wells. It’s totally him. I I think that he can be a good piece. You know, the phrase you use all the time. very well elite role player. He can be that and not have that seismic jump in terms of being the third best player on the Grizzlies. You know, that’s probably going to be Santi Alama or maybe Zack Edy. Uh that’s not going to be Jaylen Wells and he’s not going to be asked to be that guy. So, I think that’s an important differentiation point to make. But no, I was just kidding that if Jaw listens, Jaw that you he was just make sure. Yeah. Like I know sometimes people get confused or they just get really mad at me right away because it’s fun to get mad at me. I get it. Since 2012, since it’s you, Joe. People probably believed it for a second. Yeah, they I I didn’t know where you were going. See, I thought I was going to do so good and then you started like legitimately getting mad and I I think I broke character too early. I was smiling a little bit while I was saying it. Um I was building up to, you know, again, I just want to stress do better locked on NBA host. John Miranda 28 is just completely asinine. But um if you want to hear more about the locked on top 100, it’s here. The NBA top 100. You it’s been voted on by the NBA hosts of the Locked On podcast network. Our top 100 was formed by experts except for experts on John that cover these teams and players every day to Michael and I are experts on John, not the rest of these people. Find the full list on Lockdown Sports Today on YouTube or wherever you get your podcast. If you missed my reaction, I gave you a little taste of it. Uh I was a lot angrier back then. I’ve moved on in my stages of grief. I’ve accepted that they’re just wrong and you know, I can make a funny joke and make Demich mad at me. Um, but you know, Demco and I have talked about it a lot, but you can definitely go check it out on Lockdown Sports Today. Highly recommend it. Uh, tomorrow is our Friday edition of the show and I once again am sad to say I will not be getting down on a Friday.
