MLB Network BREAKDOWN Blake Perkins drives in 5 to leads NL-best Milwaukee Brewers beat Angels 9-2
a good one here tonight. 92 92 first two games of the series, but uh couple of big hits here, but it it still all starts with this dominant pitching that we’re going to see right out of the gates in the playoff. Peralta yesterday and then and then Woody here in game two. And they were solid again in all four facets. Yes, Brandon Woodruff did set the tone in this one again with a really really good start. Wasn’t a quality start. Only went five and then the bullpen was great. So pitching, yes, was there, defense was there, base running again was there, and then obviously the offense. This is what the Brewers have been doing all season long. Now their 35th game scoring at least eight or more runs. That’s impressive. That’s only second to the New York Yankees. So this offense again putting a ton of pressure on the Anaheim Angels in today’s ball game. And all of a sudden, now they have a chance for a sweep. Indeed. So uh we’ll preview all that coming up in just a bit, but somebody had to be the hero in this one. And guess whose turn it was? Blake Perkins, a five RBI night. He’s our postgame guest standing by with Sophia. Thanks, Craig. Blake, a huge night for you at the plate, tying a careerhigh with five RBI’s. Pretty good. You got to go back to 2023 the last time you did that. Yeah, I remember that game. Okay, but the last at bat, you’re coming up three walks in front of you. What are you looking for from Joseno there? I’m just trying to stay aggressive at the plate with uh my mindset and Sal said the other day like the more we’re anticipating strikes, it’s like the more good pitches you get or or the walks will come. So, I just trying to be aggressive and uh put the ball in play. Well, your first at bat as well, it was right after the injury. They bring in Connor Brogs in. Is that a difficult at bat when they bring in a new pitcher and he’s warming up on the mound and then you take advantage in that situation? Yeah, I mean it’s a little odd, right? It doesn’t happen very often, but um just do what you got to do. Just got to just got to play. Um yeah, I was awesome to come through there for for the team and uh thought we did really good today in general. Sal told you to be aggressive and and he put together a phenomenal at bat. Nine pitches for his home run. What has he done at the top of this lineup for you guys? I mean, I think everyone here sees it every night. Like he sets the tone for us. Uh he’s an awesome teammate and a good roommate, too. So, uh I’m happy for him and glad he got to show off a little power. Finally, Brandon Woodruff, good start for him. Five innings, you guys go to 10 and two with Woody on the mound when he’s executing and commanding the way that he was tonight. How does that help you guys defensively? Yeah, sets the tone. He works quick. You know, he’s going to be around the zone. Um and it’s Woody, right? Like we all are rooting for him and and playing behind him and want to do the best we can. So he sets the tone. He’s the leader out there and we try and follow. All right. Thanks Mike for the time. Thank you. All right, Blake Perkins. Big wave there. Five RBI night for him and a low heart rate of course too. He just does his thing, man. He just does his thing. He does. You love Blake Perkins. I love watching him play. Not only defense, but offensively, you know, couple of hits tonight. Obviously, five RBI’s. So, ninth big league game ever. He had five RBI’s against the Cincinnati Reds and now he’s, you know, adding to that tally of five RBI games with his second one in his 200th game as a big leager and it was the triple that was the big backb breaker in this game. But he got the scoring going with that base hit to the outside field, but that triple impressive on a first pitch change up from Jos Urena. He was ready for it. And remember that is supposed to be his weaker side, the left-handed side against right-handed pitching. Greger is hitting just 205 on the year, but on the right side, turn him around and he’s got an OPS of 875. So, he is perhaps trying to prove every everybody wrong that he can hit from both sides. That was a big game from Blake. They needed it. This was a huge game and they got five RBI’s from Blake Perkins, who was supposed to be a defensive specialist, but was all over the barrel tonight in those couple of hits and five ribbies. And it’s really good to see because he is going to start some games out in center field. So, he’s going to get those early game at bats and to come through like he did in that second inning today, the two RBI single and to cap it off uh clearing the bases with that three RBI triple. Blake Perkins is super important to this team and super important to this roster just because of the way that he can play that Gold Glove caliber defense in center field. He is your best your best defensive alignment and I would argue that maybe your best lineup is with him in center and Jackson and left and what they showed tonight just in terms of their outfield alignment. So, you know, this kid can play. He’s a winner. Everyone rallies around him. Everyone roots for him. And it was huge for him to get a couple of big hits tonight in tonight’s game. And we know who’s in right, Sal Felic. And of course, he had a big loud at bat as well in this one. Came up with a big home run. Powerball home run number 11 for Sal Felick. This came in the second inning. A nine pitch at bat and unmotive. A three-run shot too on the Yeah, the ninth pitch. four foul balls before that. 99 miles per hour off the bat. He’s got plenty of juice. You know, Sal Freelick going to the pull side. His 11th home run. And now he has 61 ribbies on the season. Creger. So, this kid has been productive all season long. He has a chance to win a batting title. We’ll see if he does that. But 11 home runs. I didn’t expect 11 from S. Maybe he can get 12 or 13 by the when we’re all said and done. But this was a a huge shot from him because again, this is a dangerous Anaheim Angels team. Yes, they strike out a lot. Yes, they are struggling big time. What is that? Six losses in a row now for the Angels. But again, they can hit bombs. They’re sixth in all of baseball in home runs. So, you could be cruising on the mound and all of a sudden they’ll hit a couple of home runs. They got four home runs in the series. Luckily, they’ve all been solo. Yeah. All solo shots. So, they’re not uh they’re not creating too much damage. Thank goodness for uh Brewer pitchers here in this one. This is the latest playoff picture for you as far as winning the National League. The Brewers with a win today reduce their magic number by one from 7 to six. So the Magic number six heading into tomorrow there are 10 regular season games to go for the Brew Crew. They are 93 and 59 and they have right now if the Phillies just happen to lose to the Dodgers they would have a 2 and 1/2 game cushion uh for the best record in the National League. Still back at the Gerber offices. One call natural sports desk as we push forward on another good win for Milwaukee and Brandon Woodruff on the hill. We mentioned the five innings. You knew he wasn’t going to go too deep. The pitch count kind of limited right now, but 10 days between starts here and this is all by design to make sure that arm stays as fresh as possible. And he didn’t disappoint. Command was really good. He was super sharp. you know, the 10-day layoff. It was a full 10 days in between starts the he pitched against the Pittsburgh Pirates 10 days ago or 11 days ago. So, 10 full days off and then he comes out and he just dominates. He really did a great job of pounding the strike zone, pitching to the edges and again he didn’t have to use his breaking ball. Just two breaking balls on the day. So, three different kinds of fast balls from Brandon Woodruff. The fast ball for seam sinker cutter and then also mixed in the change up. Only threw seven of those. So again, he was just so aggressive, really just commanding those three different versions of the fast ball. Had 17 swings and misses, 69 pitches. That’s all it took to get through five innings, nine strikeouts. He punched out Mike Trout twice in backto-back at bats. Really difficult to do. The one blemish is just a solo home run to Taylor Ward, who also hit a home run later in the game. That kid’s got 33 with 100 RBI. But just a great performance again from Brandon Woodruff. And I I kind of reiterate this point. This is, you know, the matchup against the Angels. They swing and miss a ton. They have the second lowest or worst, you could say, whiff percentage. So, swing and miss percentage in all of baseball. So, they’re swinging and missing. They’re chasing outside the zone. They also strike out a ton. They do hit the home run. However, even though it’s a good matchup, you still have to be able to execute your pitches. And both Freddy Peralta did it last night. Now, Brandon Woodruff did it tonight. And that’s what’s impressive because it is crunch time. These guys know what’s at stake. They have a little pressure on them, yet they still go out and execute. That’s what was so impressive tonight for I mean guys, I hope you can appreciate what this guy has done. This guy has spent basically two years recovering and then jumped right into the the fray after a couple setbacks of different type of injuries and he’s just been absolutely successful. You know what I mean? Not blowing it out, not with his best stuff. He’s pitching and like it reminded me a little bit again. I’m I can I can get carried away when I get excited, but it reminded me of Kershaw, you know what I mean? Like he’s just pitching. He just keeps going. Like how’s he do it? What? He’s got a lot more in the tank, I’m sure. But we just need to appreciate what this guy does. I mean, we just need to appreciate what this guy does. We have a We have a star in Freddy. This guy comes to the post every And Freddy’s gotten better every single year. Um, and then you got Woody coming back from Big Woo. Do you call your dad Big Woo? No. What do you What do you call dad? You call him dad. What does he call you? Little Woo. Yes. Okay. Um, but I mean what this guy has has done, man, it’s it’s special. I know you don’t see the big flashes on the board in 96 97 but that can be there but he’s pitching and incorporate the cutter the way he did and use the change up and and still when the heaters 91 92 it’s still really really good you know so speaking of guys who had kind of trying seasons with injury like Perkins with the shin fracture earlier in the year and and kind of slow getting rolling how important was a game like this tonight for him mentally? Yeah, I mean, he’s had some tough luck swinging the bat and he’s had um the injuries and a lot on his plate. Um there’s nobody in that locker room that is loved and beloved the way uh Blake Perkins is. I mean, he’s just a special human and uh everybody pulls for him. So, to have him have success, you know, um all his hard contacts have been caught lately. He had two balls maybe not hit as hard but produced what he driving five runs tonight. Yeah, it’s pretty good. Back to Woody. We spent a lot of time in the buildup to him coming back talking about the stuff the VO and all that. Have you gotten to a point where you kind of just like whatever he’s got that night kind of trust him to Yeah, I trust him. I trust him emphatically. What this guy has been through on the mound and the way he operates, he knows what he’s doing, you know. He does. And it’s it’s it’s it’s underrated for this team this year. What he’s done, what is our record since Woody started with us, that that’s something else because what he’s done for the pitching staff and and I’ll tell you, the pitching coaches have done a great job with them. So, kudos to them and and everybody that’s been involved with Woody’s development on the way back, the medical staff, you know, your little brother, right? Would you have a little brother? What’s his name? Bo and D. Oh, nice. Was there any question about what he’d passed tonight after getting that extra rest and kind of how he he knew exactly what he’s doing. You know what I mean? He he he was he welcomed the rest and you know if he if everyone’s concerned about the the 91 or whatever, he he he’s been doing it that way. And then when you you saw when he wanted wanted to go get 94 and he could have got more if he wanted to, but I think he’s he’s really smart about how he does things. He locates, he pitches. It’s pretty special.
