Texas Rangers vs Houston Astros – MLB 9/17/25 Full Game Highlights (MLB The Show 25 Sim)

from Dykin Park in Houston. An AL West matchup on the show. It’s the Texas Rangers taking on the Houston Astros. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. for Houston Astros. Just about to get started. Today’s starting pitcher, JP France and Singi. It’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. And a foul ball. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Packed house here at Dyken Park. Field two. And that one upstairs. Ball one. backed off the plate that time and a foul ball. He stays alive. Kickios line to left gets down base hit. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that at bat. Battling with two strikes. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field. And it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. Wyatt Langford, the next to hit, takes ball one. And another ball. Ruer at first with no outs here. Pickoff throw and he’s back in on a dive. Fast ball for a strike. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit in the dirt to second and he’s out. You know, this is the part of the game that often time is overlooked. This is the grunt work. Great job of the catcher using his body to deaden that pitch. keeps it close and then throws a strike down to second. That’s all. Next pitch is outside. Really good take especially with two strikes. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. And it one hops the wall now around second going for third. The relay throw. Throw pulls him off the bag and he’s safe. Well, most guys would have a double out of that. But for elite speed like his, that’s an automatic double. He’s thinking, how do I turn this into a triple? And that’s exactly how you do it. One down, runner at third. Next up for Texas, Jack Peterson. That one pulled foul. Here’s a guy at the plate and I’m expecting to have a good game. He always seems to play better in road games. hit on the ground to short. Slings to first now. Two away as they get a run across. Good situational hitting right there. Grounds out. Gets that run in from third. They get on the board first. Now at the plate, Adoleis Garcia. First pitch just misses. [Applause] That one drilled left field. Cole brings it in for the third out. One run, two hits, no errors, no one left. Bottom half of inning number one coming up. It’s the Rangers one and the Astros nothing. Back here in Houston, starting on the mound in this one, Jake Latz. Tell us about him in that sub3 RA. Sigy. Well, anytime you can keep your ERA under three, you’re doing a lot of things right. And you’re putting your team in a position to win a lot of ball games as well. And he’s doing tremendous out there on the mound. Every time he gets the ball, you expect him to go out there and dominate. And that’s what he’s been to this point. We’ll see how he is today. Leading off, Jeremy Pñena. And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Applause] Slice to right and that’s just foul. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] The 1-1 in there at the knees for a strike [Applause] inside. Almost got him. I got three and two. Tough take right there. He swings at that more often than not. In the air, right field. Fair ball. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. And now, let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Here’s Jordan Alvarez. Seems like he’s making contact with everything lately. Hitting better than 350 this month. Back at the middle in a base hit. throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Two consecutive base hits for these guys here. Pitch was on the outside. Didn’t go the other way with it, but still a nice job of using the big part of the field to find a hole. No way he hits it that well if he hooks around the baseball. Now Kareah up to hit ball runner around third. He’ll score. Picks himself up an RBI. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. First and second, no outs. Christian Walker up next for the Astros. Fast is outside. Sing maybe some nerves getting the best of him in the first. Well, it’s hard to know exactly if it’s nerves or not, but he just doesn’t have it right now. Those hitters on the other side, they’re going to say it’s nerves and use that as a competitive edge to try to jump on him even more. [Applause] It’s great to get on the board in the first frame of the ball game, but here’s an opportunity for them to really open things up with a couple of runners on. Let’s see if they can cash in. Alvarez on second. Koreah at first with no outs. This one high in the air to left center. Ozuna has a beat on it. Then there’s one down. Batting fifth center fielder. Now we check out the Astros lineup. And an important bat for them. Batting fifth in this one. Jake Meyers. Well, he’s an important part of this lineup for sure. I mean, there’s no doubt about it. Boo. It’s somebody that they try to feed off of. He does a lot of things, you know, very well up there at the plate. He’s got a presence about him and you know he’s a guy that you really kind of like to watch swing the bat. [Applause] Jake Meyers in the box now. Takes strike one. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter just off the inside edge. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one the other way. Fires to second for one to the double play ends the in but they pick up one run on the RBI single call even now at 1-1. New inning getting started and now it’s rowdy. Rowdy TZ France back to work and that’s off the inside edge. Ball one. Fouled off. He was late. [Music] Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. [Music] Here’s the pitch to TZ. And now two and two. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. [Applause] [Music] on the ground. [Applause] Lead off man retired here in the second. Batting six, third baseman Josh Young. Here’s Josh Young. right down to shoot and it’s 0 and one. One out. Base is empty. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. Close pitch there. And he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. One down, base is empty. Chases the fast ball up the ladder. Struck him out. Seven. Up next for the Rangers, Alejandro Ozuna. He swings and fouls one off. Tapper back to the mound. Tosses to first. Rangers go down in order. Nothing doing for the Rangers. Score remains deadlocked at one. Bottom of the second. And here’s the catcher, Yer Diaz. Chris has been a good year for him, having already set a new career high for RBI’s in a season. Fast ball for a strike, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. [Music] They had a foul ball. [Music] And the 02 ball one there. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. Chopped to third, but it kicks foul. Next offering upstairs. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. [Music] Still two and two after the foul ball. Now he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. Try to move it around. create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Blows the high heat past him. That’s a strike out. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Next to hit, Cam Smith. [Music] Oh, that’s off the plate. Carl Dixon working the plate in this one. You know, we often hear and talk about umpires being a pitcher umpire, but Boo Dixon maybe a little bit more hitter friendly than most. He’s kind of tight on the corners, so we’ll see if that comes into play at all in this one. Next offering is down low. And that one sliced foul. [Music] That’s down and in. Still just the second batter of the inning. And on the mound, he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Tied up here in the early going. [Music] Strike three. And that’s two in a row. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance. get him out of there and deal with the next guy. Zack Cole up next for the Astros. That’s outside. And that is ball one. Two out. Space is empty. Two balls, no strikes to count. Two balls, no strikes. And a strike on the outside edge. Was a good change up to hit up in the zone. I don’t think he recognized it. I’m sure he’d love to have that one back. [Music] Two outs. That one missed. [Music] spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another [Music] swing and a high-fly ball right field. Garcia settles under it and that’s the inning. We play two full innings and we’re tied 1-1. Back here in Houston onto the third inning and here is Kyle Hagashio. This one in the air. Walker drifts towards it. And in foul ground, he pulls it down. One out. Batting night, second baseman, Cody Freeman. Cody Freeman stepping in for the Rangers. Freeman hitting ninth in today’s lineup and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2019. First offering and it just misses. out of bounds right side. Walker takes it himself and that quickly two away. Now batting shorts stop Josh Smith. So the Rangers batting order turns over and the batter will be the shortstop. He’s one for one. Let off the game with a single and it’s fouled away. [Music] gets the call and the count is 0 and two. This guy’s not wasting any pitches. Hitters got to get into swing mode. This is a good time. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. And the Rangers set down in order. Still tied 1-1. as we go to the last of the third and stepping in for the Astros, Mauricio Dubon. Duban. [Applause] That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Oh, that’s up there. [Music] [Applause] And that’s too high. [Applause] Fouls one off. Two and two. gets a piece and stays alive. [Applause] Line drive caught. Reaction time is so important in the majors, especially when you’re dealing with line drives in third with good exit. Vo, you have to be ready for anything like she was right there. So the Houston lineup turns over and now the shorts stop Jeremy Pñena. He led off the bottom of the first with a single and then came in to score. And there’s a foul ball. [Applause] Here we go. Here we go. swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Now it’s Yordon Alvarez one for one with a single so far. Lat checks over to first and he’s back. [Music] There’s the strike. Pñena leads off first with one away. Here we go. That just misses. And the count even one and one. [Music] Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. That one misses and the count is three and one. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. And ball four, two aboard. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. Two on, one out. And here comes Carlos Koreah. singled and drove in a run his first time through. You have to be careful throwing and breaking pitches even in an O count. He loves going after the off speed stuff and he’s really good at hitting it. Pitch misses there and it’s one and0 way to lay off that pitch down. Runners at first and second with one gone here in the last half of the third. And another ball tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Two on, one out. And that one fouled off. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. [Applause] Next pitch off the play and that’s ball three. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter off runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. Swing and a miss. Three and two now. Filthy chase right there. Just pulled the string. And a swing and a miss. That K is his third of the game. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strike out. And now it’s Christian Walker flying to left his first time. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. And that is the inning. Two left for the Astros. Score remains tied 1-1. The Lonear series rolls on. And now the center fielder, Wyatt Langford. You talk about the power and the speed together. Well, we knew he was going to be a stud just coming up making his way through the minor leagues and quickly at this level an impact player. Swings and misses. That is strike two. Another O2 count right here. Pitcher just in the driver’s seat. He can go anywhere he wants to go right here. Nice grab. Now that is designated hitter Jock Peterson. Here is Jock Peterson. That’s through there for a strike. Line drive. Duvong fires over to first at Peterson retired. Now batting right fielder Adoleis Garcia. Adoleis Garcia stepping in for the Rangers. He’s 0 for one. Here we go. First pitch. Doesn’t find the zone. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. popped up right side. Walker settles under this one and puts the squeeze on that one and that is that. Rangers go down quickly there. We go to the bottom of the fourth tied 1-1. Bottom four. And stepping in for the Astros, Jake. Jake Meyers [Applause] that to right. Garcia settles under it and there’s one away. Now batting catcher. Now here is Giner Diaz 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. in for a strike. One [Applause] and downstairs. [Applause] Two balls, one strike. Fast ball is outside. Oh, they have had a hard time scoring in this one. The pitcher out there on the mound wants to keep attacking. Make sure that they don’t get any confidence. And he takes the strike. Full count. [Music] All tied up. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That’s towards center. Langford under it. He makes the grab and there’s two down. Now batting number 11. So up next, Cam Smith struck out swinging his first time. [Music] And that’s hammered into right field. That’s a base hit. And that keeps the inning alive. Now batting left fielder. And now here’s a speed threat. Outfielder Zack Cole flyed to right his first time. That’s in there. Strike one. Smith the runner at first with two gone. Swang and a miss. And the count is 0 and two. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count in this situation. We’ll keep a close eye on his approach. On the ground right side, Freeman the throw to first and that is the inning. So the Astros leave one. Fifth inning coming up tied at one. The Lonear series rolls on. We go to the top of the fifth. So, here comes Rowdy Tles. France back to work. Could be extra bases. Now he’ll turn for second. The throw in and he’s there with a lead off double. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going. Go ahead run on base. Josh Young stepping in for the Rangers. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. Well, these Rangers as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. Right down the shoot and on the mound. You know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. And down on strikes he goes. Not what you’re looking for after a lead off double. A strike out. And there’s one away. [Applause] So, the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Digging in, it’s the speedy outfielder Alejandro Ozula. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Music] [Applause] [Music] lifted in the air right center field. Smith sizing this one up. Hauls it in and there’s two away. Kyle Higashioa stepping in for the Rangers. 0 for one so far. [Applause] counts one and in the dirt but no advance. That’s ball one. Runner at second. Two down and we’re in the top of the fifth. Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] Called strike right there. Ground ball up the middle. Throws to first in time. That’s out number three. So a leadoff double, but they can’t cash it in. Last half of the fifth coming up. All tied 1-1. Back here at Dyken Park. John Shabi with my buddy Chris Singleton. It’s set to get a start at bottom five. Mauricio Dubong [Applause] and it stays there. Well, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. He wasn’t able to elevated, but he put a great swing on it right on time. Good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield. And the Rangers manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Jake Latz out of the game and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching for back lighter on a pitch out of the pen here. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. So the lineup flips over and now it’s going to be Jeremy Pñena. There goes the runner and that one fouled off. Dubong on at first. Nobody out. [Applause] hit on the ground might be two. Quick feed to second for one. Return throw gets him at first. It’s a 361 double play. The 361 double play in my opinion is one of the toughest plays to make. You’ve got a pitcher covering first and the middle infielder throwing to a moving target. Everything has to be perfect and right there they made it look pretty easy. You’re Don Alvarez up next for the Astros. And that’s him for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Swinging a miss. 99. How do you do? Boom. That’s cheddar, baby. and one and two. Activity in the bullpen. Number 57 getting loose out there. Edwards warming up as well. That misses the zone. And now two balls and two strikes. And they’ll do it again. Two down. Nobody on. Could be extra bases. makes the turn and heads for second. The throw in in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Well, now here’s Carlos Kareah with a chance to hit. Late swing fouled off. [Applause] Highf fly ball right field. Garcia settles under it. He’s got it and the inning is over. One left for Houston. We played five full. Tied at one aside. The Lonear series rolls on. Top six. Here’s the second baseman. Cody Freeman. Fouled off left side. missed with a change up. One and one. That’s a little bit low. Next pitch is outside. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. Here we go. Fly ball to right. Smith makes a nice grab at a full spring. Now that short Josh Smith, so the batting order turns over and now it’s the Rangers leadoff hitter. One for two. And that one’s a little bit low. And that’s ball one. Pretty frugal guy. He is very efficient with the pitch count in this one. Base is empty. One away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Now fly ball to right center. That’s out number two. Up next for the Rangers, Wyatt Langford now at the plate. One for two in the game. He tripled and scored in the first. Just missed. Well, a mistake right here could untie this ball game. If you’re the pitcher out there, you just want to be a little more cautious. This game has been so tight. Feels like the next team to score will win it. The one-1 is fouled off. A change up missing and it’s to a two. swings and misses. Struck him out. Three up, three down for him there. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. All tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the six. And now the first baseman, Christian Walker. Walker measures 6 feet even, 33 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. Action in the pen down there. Jacob Webb preparing to come on if needed. Milner also throwing. [Music] So, two balls and no strikes. And that one is lifted in the air. Langford under this one. Pulls it in. And there’s one away. Up next for the Astros. So next up for Houston, Jake Meyers. Feels like it’s less common today that you see a guy like this. the speed component, the contact component, but lack of power. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. So, a man aboard now with one away. How about now? Giner Diaz both for two in this one. That’s in there. And that is strike one. Well, we call that keyhole. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Runner on the go. Pitch in for a strike. And that’s a stolen base. Not even close. And the go ahead run is now in scoring position. You know, nights like this when it seems harder to score. I like the call to put him in motion and try to steal the base. Ball’s not carrying four home runs so far. So trying to manufacture some offense like this may be the way to go. sets him down looking. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. Most guys are very aggressive when they see the stakes out there on the base paths and can’t understand why he wasn’t ready to swing the bat. You’ve got to be ready to swing the bat in a situation like that with the go-ahead run in scoring position. And next to hit for Houston, Cam Smith delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run, so you really have to execute on the mound. [Music] And that is out of play with the go-ahead run standing at second here in the bottom of the sixth. Next pitch slider that misses outside. [Applause] [Music] Swing and a miss. And that is that. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. And we’re back. All set for the start of the inning. Now here’s the Rangers. DH Jack Peterson. Peterson just got a piece of it. Next offering is fouled back. That one outside and count one and two. Activity in the Houston bullpen. Steven Ochre getting ready to go. Do Santos the right-hander also getting loose. Fights that one away. Still one and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. On the ground to the left and that’s a fair ball around first and hustling for second in safely with a leadoff double go-ahead runs in scoring position. Still able to come through behind in the count right there. Just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline. That’s really excellent back control. And it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the tea where it’s placed in different spots. That was just nice. Now a good opportunity to potentially jump ahead in this game here in the later innings. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. JP France will depart and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. Now pitching the leftander on now Steven Ochert. and he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one an inning, so he’ll be tough to get to. So here’s the cleanup hitter, Adoleis Garcia. [Applause] That one’s in there. That’s strike one. [Applause] Oh, one swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left center. Puts it away for the O. Now batting first baseman Rowdy TZ. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position and now Rowdy TZ. [Music] And that’s in there for strike one. [Applause] swings through that. Well, you can’t expect to get a great pitch to hit with an open base and a runner on second. He’s going to have to really tighten up his sights here. Make sure that he can barrel up the ball. Got him swinging. Nice work there to get the strike out. And that’s a big second out. I’ll tell you, this home crowd will be fired up. they can get out of this and leave that go ahead run stranded in scoring position. This is a big moment in this game. Here’s the third baseman, Josh Young. First pitch and he just misses. Two down. Go ahead run in scoring position. [Applause] And that’s fouled all. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at and a one count. Just not able to square it up. That’s inside. That’s inside. And strike two. And he really sells the change up with that arm action. This one in the air. Walker moving under this one. And that’s the third out. [Applause] Now pitching for we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Jacob Web. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So the defense should be active. And stepping in for the Astros, Zack Cole. [Applause] The wide to kick the pitch way upstairs. One and0. [Music] [Applause] [Music] And another ball. [Applause] looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone, middle away. The flip to the pitcher covering and the lead off hitter set down to open the seventh. Second baseman Mauricio Dub. Here’s Mauricio Dubong. And there’s a ball. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Well, I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. There’s the strike. Two and one now. [Music] Next offer misses down and away. Way out front for strike two. Three and two. goes down looking. Well, he hadn’t seen that change up the entire at bat until that put away pitch and it’s pretty tough to deal with as a hitter. You’re up there battling trying to read and react with two strikes and then all of a sudden a pitch comes out of nowhere and it’s a good change up. It’s just almost impossible to hit it when you haven’t seen it. Jeremy Pñena the next to hit right through there for a strike. [Music] That was the sweeper, but it missed. [Music] [Applause] [Music] The shorts stop takes the ball. [Applause] That one fouled off. Two and two. [Applause] Here we go. Here we go. [Applause] line drive, base hit right center field. So, the go-ahehead run is on base with a knock. Clearly seeing the ball very well in this one. Just a really nice approach to shoot that line drive to the opposite field. There’s a lot of hard work and discipline that goes into getting a result like that at the plate. Doesn’t come naturally for most hitters. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. So now the Astros designated hitter, your Don Alvarez down the middle for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. 0 and one. Two gone. The possible go ahead run at first. Houston. Now one [Applause] [Music] strike three. Got him. Looking on the change up. [Music] Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Anel de los Santos. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. So they’re making a move for a bat off the bench. Jake Burger, he represents the go-ahead run. [Applause] turned on but foul wide of third. [Applause] That one missing inside. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. And a swing and a miss. Movement in the bullpen. Brian Abrau, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. A one, two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Applause] Swing and a miss. 98 mph on the gun. But that kind of velocity, an elevated fast ball, even if it’s still in the strike zone, can be tough for hitters to get on top of. Here’s a catcher to hit. Kyle Hagashio. And that’s downstairs. And that’s ball one. [Applause] One down. Base is empty. That’s off the inside corner. And the count is 2 and 0. [Applause] Nope. Cody Freeman in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. All tied up and we’re in the top of the eighth. Clips the corner. They’re down three in a one. [Applause] That’s ball four. tried another fast ball but missed the spot. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Go ahead run on base. Cody Freeman digs in now. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Next pitch inside and now two and 0. If you’re the pitcher, you’ve got to go right at this guy. It’s the number nine hitter in the lineup. You can’t be afraid of contact in this situation. Fast ball for a strike at 95. [Applause] [Applause] Swaging a drive deep left field. That one is back and brings it in at the wall. just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. And now it’s the Rangers leadoff hitter. One for three. [Applause] That’s a strike and one off of first with two away. [Applause] line drive. Can’t get there. Should be extra bases. Runner around third on his way to the plate. The relay not in time. He beat it and they’ve got the lead. He gets it done in a big spot to get the run across. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So, no surprise he put a great swing on it. So runner at second, two down. Next to hit, Wyatt Langford and a pop up right side foul territory brings it in and that’ll do it. Rangers get one on the RBI double and this is now a 2-1 ball game. Back after this on the show. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Carl Edwards Jr. This is his third time out this year. Number 52, Carl Edwards Jr. Now into the game, Ezekiel Duran. He’ll be out in left field. Ezekiel Duran. 345 up for the home team. Carlos Koreah getting ready to hit. Carlos Koreah and the first pitch misses for ball one. Some activity in the bullpen for Texas. Sha Armstrong the closer is getting ready and perhaps looking at a long save opportunity here. Looking to get the tying run on base. Tap foul at the plate. [Music] Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. One ball, two strikes. [Music] [Applause] [Music] And a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Pretty big strike out right there to start this eighth inning. Down one. Any lead off base runner really makes this inning a bit more interesting. But now this offense has to switch from possibly trying to manufacture a run to needing to run into something or just try to string multiple hits together to get a run across the plate. And here now is the Astros cleanup hitter, Christian Walker. edge of the zone for a strike. Going one. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. [Applause] gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Let’s go. [Applause] Let’s go. Let’s go. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going [Applause] and a swing and a miss. Two away. very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. Getting straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. These aren’t fun at bats if you’re a hitter. I’m so glad I’m retired. Here’s the center fielder, Jake Meyers. That misses off the outside edge. Next offering is downstairs. [Applause] Foul ball there. Looked like he got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, I want to stay up the middle. That way, if you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. If you’re a little late, opposite field nine. [Music] Good job to fight that one off. [Music] On the ground to short, throw over to TZ. And the Astros put down in order. Nothing doing for the offense that time through eight full. It’s the Rangers two and the Astros one. Now pitching. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Rober Valdez on for the 30th time this year. [Applause] And Jack Peterson in the designated hitter, Jock Peterson. [Applause] That one finds the zone. It’s 0 and one. That big curve inside a pitch that can buckle you a little bit. Looks like a fast ball out of the hand and then just drops over that inside part of the plate. fouls that off to the left and will do it again. The O2 swing and a miss. Curve ball in the dirt onto first. Got him one away on the strike out. So the bullpen doing a nice job backing up the effort from their starter. Yeah, we’ve seen some pretty excellent pitching out of this staff so far. I mean, they’ve come in ready to do their job and get outs. They’ve been pretty tough to get to in this one. [Applause] And first off is fouled off. Valdez. He’s made a name for himself as a very effective reliever, but not really what you expect from a bullpen arm these days because he’s not out there racking up Ks. One down, base is empty. And ball one. I think it’s the deception and his ability to change arm angles and slots and give hitters different looks within one at bat. They’re never able to get comfortable. When you only see him once, a lot of times he has success. [Applause] Got to be clever, too, when you don’t have that lights out stuff, right? Absolutely. You got to know what you’re able to do instead of focusing on what that hitter’s strength is. Stay with your strength and trust that you’ll come out on top. One, two. Now, look out. And it hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Here’s Rowdy TZ. First base, Rowdy TZ. Valdez in his sixth season, 31 years old, and he was born in the Dominican Republic. And that’s in there at the knees. Those left-handed hitter, you kind of expect that breaking ball from the lefty. So, you just want to track it and get an idea because you know it’s going to come into play later in the bat. Off the plate and one and one. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Just missed. This hitter’s looking for a fast ball, but I’m not sure he’s going to get one. Pitcher doesn’t have to challenge him. If he feels better about his off speed secondary stuff, then stay with it. Rudder takes off, fouls one off to a two. [Applause] He misses. It’s a strike out. Well, that’s a curve ball that I’m sure he wants back at the plate. Two strikes sort of pitch you’re hoping for. A bit of a mistake and I’d say in a very hitable location, but clearly the break was enough to get him to swing through it. Josh Young stepping in for the Rangers. 0 for three in this one. And that’s off the inside edge. Ball one on the ground of first and foul ball. Two outs. One ball, two straight. That one the other way. And it goes just foul. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. Pitch misses. And the count now even up. [Applause] just off the outside part of the plate. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Rip towards third, fires across the diamond and the inning is over. No runs on no hits, no errors, and one man left. 678 scheduled to start the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Rangers two and the Astros one. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Shawn Armstrong. Well, you see the ERA very solid. That doesn’t always tell you the whole story, but he’s been really good so far this year. Well, one game. Here’s the catcher. Yer Diaz 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. [Applause] Fast for a strike. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. [Music] One-run game. Bottom nine. Fights it off. He’ll see another struck him out looking. Well, that right there is what you want to see out of your closure. Come in and close the door, cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game. Tell you what, that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs. Smith swings through it for strike one. One. [Applause] Swings through that one. Now a pop up on the infield. Tles on his way over. Two down. Now batting left fielder Z. There comes a pinch hitter for the Astros. Victor Keratini looking for a two out spark with the bases empty. [Applause] And that’s in for a strike. 01’s the count. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] The Astros down to their final strike and that just misses. That turns out to be a really good take right there. But you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. a onun lead and the home team trying to pull it out. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Stays alive. [Music] [Applause] Foul ball still one and two count. [Music] [Applause] and a swing and a miss. And that is the ball game. Another solid outing from him out of the bullpen. He’s up to double digits now with his 10th save of the season. And your final score here today, 2-1 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long. [Applause] Heat. Heat.
