ASTROS POSTCAST: Houston Astros Get Clutch When Needed, Pull Off Sweep Of Texas Rangers
This is the Astros Post Cast, your instant game reaction for the Houston Astros, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. [Music] You know, if there’s one thing that you can say about the 2025 Houston Astro season is that, well, you just can never expect what’s coming next. And that happened over the last few days at Dyky Park as the Astros finish off the sweep tonight of the Texas Rangers. A pivotal, huge, needed, everything about it series against those Rangers. And oh, what do you know with a Mariners loss tonight, the Astros are back on top in the American League West. Feels good to be back in a good spot when it comes to your Stros, doesn’t it? Right up there at the top. Yes, that is exactly where they are by beating the Rangers tonight. And by the way, keeping the silver boot in the city of Houston 84 and 69 now on the year of the Astros. We got a lot to get into tonight here on the Locked on Astros Post. This episode of the Astros Post is brought to you by Game Time. So, we had to whittle this thing down to one thing tonight that you’re talking about from the win. It is I hit the wrong I hit the wrong button. It is This is what you’ll be talking about. You know, I just got so excited about the Astros doing what they did that I hit the wrong button. It happens sometimes. Um, the Astros being clutch. clutch hits tonight all over the place when they need it. Clutch home runs getting to a top tier starter. Now, I know we haven’t had this show uh in the last couple of nights, which appreciates you guys patience. Monday night, we had Texans football going on. I was doing Texans. I just couldn’t pull off both. Uh last night I was traveling, unfortunately. Couldn’t get that done. So, I’m glad to be back with you guys tonight and I’m happy to be able to do it after a victory. I did uh catch the action Monday night. I did watch while I was watching the Texans. did not catch any of last night’s game because again I was traveling, went back and watched the highlights and whatnot, but what I can tell you, I know that, you know, it ended in a little bit of a fashion. Um, but tonight and for this series as a whole, I look, I have doubted it. We’ve talked about it on this on this show multiple times. I have doubted where they’re at. You know, coming off of that last road trip, there was no reason to believe that this baseball team was going to suddenly flip the script and play unbelievable baseball. There was no signs of it at all. And here’s what ended up happening. They came home and they played a team, one of the teams in this division that had been red-hot of late. And to be honest with you, they just they just put the the Rangers season probably on ice right there. Finishing it off. That was as clutch as you get. and they’ve again pushed themselves back into first place in the American League West halfame lead over the Mariners. And you’re setting yourself up for the most pivotal series of the season over the next, excuse me, over the three days this weekend, Friday, Saturday, Sunday in your ballpark. And the roller coaster of emotion from what’s been going on, all of a sudden you look up, this team’s won five out of six and six out of eight. That’s a lot better than what it had been. And it’s all that impressive, of course, to lose your star once again. I can they with Can they continue to do it at this P? I don’t know. I don’t know. It’s incredibly difficult to say that you can win at a high clip consistently without one of the most dangerous hitters in the game. What I do know is that maybe, just maybe, and I think you kind of saw it in this series, you kind of see it tonight. I think this team’s playing a little pissed-off. And that can’t carry you all the way, of course, but they got that little bit of an extra edge in them at the moment cuz there’s the doubters out there. There’s I’ve been a doubter. There’s been reason to be doubtful. There’s still incredible amount of work to do here. This thing is not done by any means. Now, again, they’ve given themselves a good little runway here of locking in the playoff birth. Yeah, you can’t completely sleep on it. Cleveland’s still lurking back there. A couple two and a half games back of the last wild card spot because look, the Astros lose tomorrow or not tomorrow, they lose um Thursday night, they’ll be back in second place and then you’ll be the last wild card team in the division or in the last wild card team in the American League with that Cleveland team lurking. But I got to say, I mean, look, I am as impressed as you can get with how they responded coming back home and then responded on top of that to the Yordon stuff. So, it begs the question for me, for you, for all of you sending in the comments, for those of you watching live, are you buying back in? Not that you were ever completely out with are you buying back into thinking that they can do something here when it comes to getting into October. If this style of play, if this sort of result, well, of course, if this result shows up, guess what they’re going to do? Well, they win. They score more runs than the other team. They win. That’s how sports works. Genius. But if this kind of energy from the baseball team I think is consistent, we got something you can talk about here. And I think it’s something that, you know, we look back on and I at times they felt lethargic. I think there’s no denying that. Were they lethargic? I don’t know. But it it they gave off that appearance from time to time without a doubt. and just when they need it. We’ve talked so much about the bats, you know, not being good of late coming into this series, but some of their big boys that they needed to get going. Paying you a couple hits tonight. Pops a solo home run the uh the other way. Carlos Koreah has been a godsend to this this team coming back. He’s been just so just so solid. Everything he does, we knew what he was bringing valuewise this baseball team. José Altuve, you know, it’s been up and down. It’s been rough overall of late, but two-run jack tonight. Again, tied 2-2. 35 home runs and I think 100 runs batted in now against the Rangers. The most he has against any team in baseball. Yiner Diaz, that at bat for Yiner Diaz in the bottom of the first, the base is loaded. Honestly, that more than any other thing in the game. Time to reveal where the game was won or lost. It’s the turning point. Now, I do know that again the Rangers tied the game later on and Joseé Aluve hit the two-run home run to do it. But honestly, that at bat in the first inning with two outs and down in a one-two count against Jacob Deg Grom for Yiner not to get too big in that moment and try to do too much and just work bat ball and pop a line drive over the shortstop’s head and drive in the first two runs of the game. I think it really drove home the all those things that I was talking about a minute ago with this team. drove it all home there with that one swing of the bat. Again, yes, Rangers would come back and tie it up and Aluve would do it again. But I think that set the tone for Deg Grom’s night. Look, Deg Grom gave up five runs tonight. That tied for the most he’s given up against anybody this season. But I really do think Yiner’s at bat there. And for a guy that has ticked me off as much as he’s ticked anybody else off this season with the way that he’s performed consist not consistently that was a clutch moment and they need more of those and I think it was just very aware of the situation going on and playing for what’s best for you at that time. There’s a level of maturity to that instead of swinging big trying to hit the ball of the ballpark. Now, that leads into the big series against the Seattle Mariners. Let’s talk about that here in a brief moment. Locked on Astroscast. Before we get into that Mariners series, I got a few things to uh remind you guys about tonight here on the Locked On Astros Post. The silver boot stays where it belongs and everything feels good right now if you’re a Houston Astros fan as they are back on top in the American League West by a half game over the Seattle Mariners with the victory tonight. Before we take a preview of that uh game, I need to hand out the This is the locked on player of the game. Multiple options tonight. Always good to have plenty. Jeremy Pñena, Jose Altuve, Yiner Diaz, even Christian Javier. Six innings, a two-run ball tonight to pick up his second win of the season. We are going to give it to the man I was talking about a few moments ago. I really just thought it set the tone for the night, Yiner Diaz, the tworun single. As clutch as it gets there in the first inning with the bases loaded and you have, well, you have a victory tonight over them. And there you are going. Now they will play the most important series of the season over the next three games. The Seattle Mariners in town. No love lost of course between these two franchises overall. At least the two fan bases. I don’t think that the team never, you know, Scott Service isn’t there anymore. So it’s not really that big of a deal. I I don’t know. I shouldn’t say it’s not that big of a deal, but it’s, you know, it is what it is. Um, we’ll see if tempers get a little hot and bothered, whatever it might be, uh, in this series. But the Astros have to take two out of three. We know that they want to win this division. You want to win the division. You want to have the home field in that wild card round. And heck, I’m sitting here saying all this, the Astros still have a chance at being the second seed and getting a buy in the first round. Detroit has been scuffling coming in. The Astros at the moment are a win back or one game back in the win column. two games out in the loss column. So, game and a half back of the Tigers that is still in play. And if you can absolutely go out there and have a big series against the Mariners, finish off your season with the A’s and the Angels, two teams not playing for anything, then we might have an actual discussion about the Astros getting a buy and having to just wait for the ALDS. Sign me up for that right now. Let’s freaking go. Hunter Brown’s going to go Friday. Saturday will be from Veraldz, Jason Alexander. Sunday, it’ll be Woo, Kirby, and Gilbert for the Mariners in that series. Now, don’t forget Sunday’s game is a night game, not a day game. So, we will be with you a little bit later for that one in the evening instead of typical afternoon spot for the Astros Sunday games. But Friday night, I’ll be here once again talking all things Astros after what is hopefully a victory against those Mariners. Y’all have a great rest of your Wednesday night. Enjoy it. Soak it in. Feel the love, passion. Oh, and make sure that silver boot fits because it’s never going back to Arlington. Talk to you Friday night on Locked on Astros.
