Coach McDaniel meets with the media after #MIAvsIND | Miami Dolphins

Yeah, I think uh in the National Football League um when you’re minus three plus a turnover on downs um you run into the kicker, you um across the board you that’s not a formula. And so um that formula is for failure and nothing else. And I think you know um there there was a lot of um preparation for week one and I don’t think it looked it. What does that mean? That means that guys let week one um and the uh bells and whistles of the season starting get the best of them. Um my job is to prevent that, you know. Um I I did my best, not good enough. So the you have 11 you have two games in 11 days and that’s what you do with it. Um the National Football League teaches tough lessons. Um, you know, I think we’re a much better team than we played today or than we displayed today, but that doesn’t matter either, you know. Um, you have to play good football. So, uh, when you play bad football, you have, um, what is it? 20 20 minutes less of time of possession. You, uh, you you don’t take the weight, you don’t take the ball away. Um, you don’t put them in the offense in negative situations. you don’t take care of the ball. You know, it’s a a a young team having to learn some uh very hard lessons and and that’s what the league’s about. It’s you you it’s all about the es and flows. You can’t overcook a success and you can’t overcook a failure. um you have to continue to um learn from things and look at the tape and it will be a very very critical um day tomorrow to be accountable so that we can absolut with absolute certainty learn from it. Um otherwise you just sit in this and um and I don’t think that’s an option. So we got two games in 11 days no time to sulk. Um but yes, it was uh not the way um I think our team wanted things to go for sure and uh they got some uh strong humility today. Um it you know in circumstances it can I think in in this circumstance I think it’s um you know it it it’s very black and white and obvious um uh more so than I would like just to the players of the things that we’ve worked on the way we’ve looked their technique and fundamentals and how they were lacking in the game. So it yeah there’s week one regardless um you’re are either crowned or shunned. Um and that’s you know that’s something that you know I think uh we have in our own control the observation of how how things play out. Um, if you take your uh you I think quite honestly um uh the the way we lost um probably is an overall um better way to learn an absolute lesson that never changes. uh if you ever let the game be bigger or the uh desire for achievement to be bigger than the nuts and bolts of execution and not dropping people in protection, not overrunning tackles, um you know, the these things, uh you’re going to have those results. But, you know, I think the the the biggest thing is is that um you know, our our captains um you know, I think understand they could feel it during the game and uh you know, I’m I’m very motivated to get together with the team, watch the tape, and um you know, keep it real and get ready for um our next opponent home game against the New England Patriots because they’re not going to feel sorry for um in the least. Nor should they. Yeah. Um yeah, like I’ve said before, I I don’t see this job void of pressure. I don’t see um entitlement um in in this job. But, you know, I’m not I I I think the most important thing is that I worry about doing my job. Um, so, uh, I think that’s what the team will get from me for sure. Um, without watching the tape, um, you know, it was, uh, uh, something that, um, that it was left to be desired, I think. I think it’s definitely not all on him. There’s um there’s there’s just throws that I know he makes um nine times out of 10 and he didn’t make them um today. Uh but that being said, um it’s hard to play quarterback when you have surprise pressures, meaning that they’re blitzing, but you think it’s account accounted for and then somebody doesn’t pick it up or um you know, you have people coming out the huddle the wrong way when when they had been nailing it. um for a week on um a week plus really uh stuff we’ve been working on. So um you know it’s like the rest of the team I would say but definitely not all on him um at all. There’s too there’s too many people that uh that failed at their at their execution of their jobs for him to even h have uh any extra um on his shoulders. But uh yeah, I I would say that it like the rest of the team um wasn’t good enough to uh to win football games in the National Football League. Um, and I think that was obvious. Well, there there was um there wasn’t a theme. Um, you know, there was one one play where um you know, the uh there was a a really just a mental mistake of going the wrong way um from a a lineman. And that was probably the only one I thought they they played solid. Um but it wasn’t that it was that exotic. It was that um you know running back or a receiver didn’t do the responsibility on the play um that you know we emphasized a lot. What does that mean? That means that guys weren’t focused on the right things. And the most difficult thing as a coach is you can see focus um but you don’t know what’s going on inside a person’s mind. Um and and sometimes you you find out the hard way like we did today. So it was just collective execution um on things that were surprising me live speed. So, um yeah, I think uh guys guys needed uh obviously they needed to um experience that and uh we have a choice. We can change it or we can be the same. Um but yeah, I don’t I I don’t think uh this locker room and and the collection of players um is uh is, you know, based upon my interactions with them. The taste is terrible and they’re eager to fix it. So, we’ll come back to work tomorrow and um uh do uh uh start the process again on what we should have um uh this week. And we have 11 11 days, two games, um two division opponents. So, uh the time is now to um focus in our jobs and and uh uh if we want different results, we have to um play football together uh in a different manner. You know, I think uh really from a blitz pattern perspective, um there wasn’t one blitz that we didn’t rep. Um uh so that that’s kind of the disappointing part. Um, you know, there there’s always coverage nuances and uh, you know, I think, um, kind of in line with, uh, what a lot of the league’s doing, there’s some coverage adjustments that, you know, we had a plan for and, um, the the really the plays for the plan um, ultimately didn’t get executed. And, um, it’s my job to make sure that they get executed. So, um I will I have a lot to a lot to do um as a as a leader, but then I have a lot of leaders um within the locker room that, you know, I’ve that I depend on that, um need to see this the right way. Um, and and I think we will, you know, it’s it’s something that the the league is uh the National Football League gives you hard lessons and if um you collectively have uh uh any leaks in in your football, they’ll get exposed. And they did today. Um hats off to the Colts. they they um took advantage of every little mistake and leaned on us and um you know whether it was offensive um issues or you know getting off the field you know the running into the punter um you know offsides uh there was a second and forever where we got a defensive holding um which is an automatic first down you know all those all those things it was um uh the collection it was a collection of how to lose um football games in the National Football League. Um so we got a great lesson and pretty much covered all the bases. So um we have one direction to go and it’s going to be through work and nothing else. Mhm. Yeah. Yeah, it did. It did. It was um you know a collection of things that uh you know you only correct if you have well-intentioned um coaches and players that um are ready to be accountable. And so far that’s what they’ve shown me of themselves. and you know I’ll I’ll uh um get the opportunity to to see uh how they respond um with the this team in particular with the you know lights on of uh you know the regular season. So, I think a lot of guys um uh really uh really kind of new um it’s a it’s a rough a rough experience um but one that uh we most certainly needed apparently and uh we we’ll have to use for good use moving forward. Um you know, I’ll find out more more information on both uh storm. Um, it was a it was an ankle. Um, uh, James, it was a was a pec, but I don’t know um how severe either one are, so we’ll find some more information out. Um, well, I think it’s more of uh, you know, these in the National Football League with um, starting quarterbacks, there’s a there’s already enough um, you know, I would say pressure on them. with Tua. It’s um uh not settling for anything but, you know, exact reasons or wise in his game. And um we’ve had good games, we’ve had bad games, but the biggest thing is we learn from things. Um yeah, I hoped we’d learned um week one lessons. Um, but it was, you know, the first time of extended play um for a lot for a lot of guys uh in a game setting and um you either uh leave feeling that your game was appropriately displayed or or or you leave like feeling like what was that? Um you know I think generally with with Tua um you know he’s very very prideful in his craft. So, uh, games where he can find as many controllables and many things that he can, um, be like, I I shouldn’t have done that or I shouldn’t have, uh, I shouldn’t have been, um, I shouldn’t have lost one or I should have stayed with number two, or whatever the things are. Um, he’s he’s very good about attacking um, issues and problems um, whenever his performance isn’t up to his standard. So, I have I have no doubt that he’s going to um come back and and uh and be the leader we need and the the player we need um during the week like a lot of guys who are going to be disappointed with the film. But again, it’s not on Tua. you’re not. There was a couple plays that I think he should have been better on for sure, but um collectively it wouldn’t have been a good enough outing um had had he played lights out based upon all the other players on the field and their lack of execution. What What was that? Yeah, I’ll have to take a look at uh look at the tape in terms of um you know within the drop there’s a lot of zone responsibilities and sometimes um you know a safety what what it looked like live speed um was that he didn’t have the help he was supposed to have. Um but you know I’ll take a look at the film. It was um there was a a lot of frustration on that particular play. Um, one thing we hadn’t done thus far is dropped eligibles. So, um, I’ll uh I’ll get to the tape and and uh assess accountability for that. I I I think it was a um a group effort of failure. Um, starting with communication and uh the the communication was wrong from for the entire side of the field. So, it was a trickle down effect. Um, and the Yeah, the safety could have saved the play, but it it wasn’t solely on him.

  1. What continues to stun me is how did this guy succeed in his job interview with Mr. Ross? I know the Dolphins GM is a very bad judge of talent, but Ross is wildly successful. In his many businesses, there is no way he’d hire McDaniel.

  2. As smart as McDaniels is, he lacks the mental and physical fortitude to be a leader of men.
Sorry but you need a coach that can rough up a player to get them in line

  4. It’s wild how much hate this man is getting. He took y’all to the playoffs 2 out of the last three years. Before him, yall went to the playoffs 1 time in 13 years. He needs support from the fans , not threats to fire him jeeze.

  5. He is decent O coordinator. He’s going to burn this franchise into the ground as head coach. Ross won’t fire him. It’s over

  6. I’m sorry Dolphins fans, but you guys need a head coach! Time and time again McDaniel has proved he is in way over his head as a leader and no matter how smart he is offensively, if you can’t lead men and get the most out of your players in the locker room, then he has no chance of being a head coach! And this press conference shows how defeated and lost he is! He has also given up on his players by throwing them under the bus like this and I am honestly shocked at this press conference! To show up as a team like the way they did yesterday, in week one shows how this team has given up on him!
The Dolphins need a true leader and someone who believes in them, and this guy isn’t it!

  7. I did my best and it wasn’t good enough when they lose to the Patriots this week we will not see nor hear from Mr. McDaniels again hopefully Greer goes with him. Weaver will be the interim, but he’s just as bad if not worse.and please bring Tua with Them.

  8. They gave him another year to see if he can bring Tua and the offense back. He can’t. He’s done, Tua is done and the rebuild needs to begin now.

  9. he was hailed as an offensive genius just a couple of years ago, when the dolphins looked unstoppable and put up 70 points in one game. how fast public opinion can sway in the nfl.

  10. Damn this man is about to be fired. I wouldn't be surprised if it's mid season. I remember watching the documentary they made about him a few years ago, he was on top of the world. Now he's going to most likely be fired. He will be fine though, once you've been the head coach in the NFL you are set for life.
