[Passan] ‘If a cap is the only answer, we’re all in trouble’: What fight over salary cap means for MLB’s future

  1. A salary cap would be objectively good for baseball – but the fans hate manfred so much that as soon as he mentioned it they started to disagree. Truly a fascinating case study.

  2. I’m going to come down on the side of labor, everytime. This is a cheap play by owners to make more money, not produce better baseball.

Here is my comment on this nonsense from like a month ago:

    >I know I’m the only one here, but a lockout/strike is just not going to happen.

    >The cap floor is a non-starter and everyone knows it. Its not the point of contention social media seems to think. Its just not going to happen. Writers read social media then write their stories to get clicks. Its not a serious discussion within actual baseball. Its not going to happen. People don’t risk millions of dollars individually and billions collectively over negotiating an issue that won’t happen.

    >When you remove that from the discussion, the sides are not far apart on anything really. Nothing at least that would lead to a stoppage.

    >There’s just too much money lost on a strike or lock out. And none of the other negotiations are worth that.

    >So don’t worry about it. You’ll have both the show and the minors going.

  4. There’s ways to add a salary cap, while still giving the average player more earning potential. Double or triple the league minimum salary. Increase bonuses for All Star and Playoffs. I’m not sure if there is any bonus involved in the end of the year awards, but add that/increase it. Hell, even team MVP/Cy Young gets a bonus

The Dodgers are spending $350 million on payroll this year. The Blue Jays are at $250 million, the 5th highest payroll in baseball but still $100 million less than LA. How is that fair? How is baseball the only major US sport without a cap?

  5. The MLB is the only major sport in the US which is so obviously run by runaway money, money, money.

The NFL/NBA has teams rise and fall all the time, which is usually based on their ability to draft and develop talent and be shrewd when it comes to contracts. BTW, they have salary caps.

You know that the Yankees, Dodgers, and Red Sox will always be in the picture because of MONEY.

In the MLB, just spend a billion dollars, poach everyone’s good players, and win a WS. See Dodgers.

We also need a salary floor to end poverty franchises, see Rockies, Pirates, Marlins, Athletics.

  6. Honestly, we’d all better hope that a salary cap is in place by 2030 or Bobby will be on the Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, or Red Sox after opting out and signing a 500 billion contract with one of them…

  7. Alright then, add a floor and a punishing luxury tax up to a point. Let teams go above it, but make them pay in a way that can’t be ignored by top teams. Can probably work in a way to stop teams from circumventing it with deferments too
