Who should start for the Sixers at power forward?

[Music] [Music] All right, folks. Listen. It’s time. We need to start our season preview for the Philadelphia 76ers as we inch closer to the start of media day and training camp. And we are so excited to do so. We get to talk some actual basketball discussions, some debates as we come to you live from the Exfinity Lounge here on this Tuesday along with Derek Bodner, Kyle Newbeck. I’m Devon Given and Bri, president of basketball operations. Our show is presented by Rothman Orthopedics. Visit rothmanorththo.com/phy and fort how many years Kyle? 48 straight years to visit your local Ford store. All right, we got to talk about some positional open roster spot conversation here of who should start where if we are to assume of course Tyrese Maxi, Paul George, Joel Embiid, they have those starting spots locked up. We got to talk about those other two spots and specifically today we’re going to start off with the power forward position. Before though we get to that got to tell you about something pretty cool going here at PHLY. You know about our fifth member of our show Rich Hoffman who also does the daily newsletter here at PHLY the best newsletter in the city. What Rich has done now he’s put together in the universe. in the universe. Sorry, in the universe. He has put together the ultimate phy sports quiz. All right, the ultimate phy sports quiz. Here’s what it is. It’s a five-part 100 question challenge as part of Rich’s daily newsletter to test your sports knowledge of your favorite sports teams here in the area. This doesn’t cost you anything. All right, it’s free. You just go ahead, get in there, take the quiz, see how it goes. All you have to do is refer a few people uh when you do so and you get the quiz. It’s just that simple. There are quizzes for the Flyers, Phillies, Eagles, Sixers, plus a mystery quiz. And the first three people to complete all five of those quizzes will get their choice of a t-shirt from the PHLY locker that we talk about so much here on the show. Everyone who does complete it will have their name and score listed in Rich’s Excellent Phys. Don’t be stinking it up. Don’t embarrass the family. You can get started at allphy.com/quiz to get started. Once again, it’s a five-part 100 question challenge as part of Rich’s newsletter. has either I only did the Sixers one and I got 100% on it. So, I have to do both of them. No pressure. Have you started it yet? I have not. I have not started it yet either. Have you started it? Definitely not. I’ll do mine today. The straight A student over here. I’ll do mine today. But it’s really cool. Everybody, once again, all phy.com/quiz. Check it out and uh see how you do. Question one is, what is VJ Hedgecom’s go-to move? Shout out B Pump as we start pump where you at? I’m sure he’s got some some some thoughts on this question Derek as we start things off here discussing uh we begin our profile of the season, our preview if you will of how things are going to look. We want to have some things today, tomorrow, all through this week and next week as well. Then we’ll get into media day, training camp, etc. They have a preseason game on October 2nd against the New York Knicks in Abu Dhabi as part of the the NBA games across across the water. So the question though is who should the starting four be for the Philadelphia 76ers? And the two obvious candidates to start, unless everybody else wants to throw someone else in there, are Paul George, who occupied that position a year ago, and newly signed in the offseason to a two-year deal, Trendan Watford. Those are the two to start. So, throw in Andre Drummond. If you want, you go ahead. I very much don’t. You make that claim. See how that one goes. But as we start this one off, man, uh we want to start though with Paul George and why he should or shouldn’t. and uh we start off with you and get your your opinion on how you feel about that with Paul. Well, I think the you know at this time last year you had Caleb Martin on as well and he was another relatively big or at least strong forward. So I think maybe it made this a little bit easier to put a double, you know, a two-wing lineup out there. Uh, since then you’ve gotten a little bit smaller. You know, replacing Caleb with Quinton Grimes, drafting VJ, who even though he’s taller than maybe some people thought of at Baylor, he’s still a little bit, you know, he’s more of a 23 rather than any kind of a 34. So, it feels like you have a little bit fewer options. Then again, it’s not like Caleb was a a particularly good rebounder anyway. So, he wasn’t covering up that deficiency. But, we came into the the season last year going like, I’m kind of worried about the rebounding. And they got a little bit smaller in the 12 months since. That being said, I do think you go Paul George. And the reasoning for it, it’s just the easiest way to get your best players on the floor at the start of the game. And, you know, I think when you start looking at a lot of the lineups, it is easier to match up when you have, you know, Paul George and Quinton Grimes and whoever ends up sort of being that third wing player than it is if you put Watford out there. And, you know, it is one thing to Yeah, Watford’s tall, not a great rebounder. the shot, like we’ve mentioned a lot, is, you know, slow and low volume and he’s not a particularly great defender anyway. I just feel like this is the way, even though Paul George maybe isn’t a prototypical power forward. Maybe Paul George doesn’t necessarily love playing the position. Certainly, like in terms of rebounding, you’re going to struggle. It’s just the way to get your most talented, most versatile lineups out on the floor at the start of the game when you really need the most versatility to be able to match up with the other team’s best players. Yeah. If Trenan Watford was a more reliable shooter, if Trendan Watford was a more prolific rebounder, I think it’d probably be a tighter conversation here based on how the roster are shaken out. And certainly, we’ll we’ll make the case for Watford later on. But I think it’s just the cleanest way to get probably your best two-way lineups on the floor by putting Paul George at the four. Obviously, one of the main questions surrounding it would be, will Paul George want to and greenlight playing the four, right? I know that nobody watching or listening to this show wants to feel like Paul George should have any say on anything at this point after a disappointing first season in Philadelphia. But guys who are making that type of money with that type of rep and resume, they’re going to have at least some influence on all right, here, here’s who I’m going to have to guard. Here’s where I’m going to be situated. Here’s who’s going to be around me. That’s not to say that Joel and Paul and Tyrese are coaching the team or setting the lineup, right? But their what they say and their influence and how they feel about things, it’s going to play into it. And Paul, I think in the past, has been pretty reluctant to play the four. I would say if he’s had concerns or push back on it in the past though, everybody watching the NBA knows this is not 20 years ago. This is not 30 years ago, even 10, 15 years ago. There just aren’t a ton of real deal power forwards in the league, right? Like there are a few guys that you think you you hear their name and you think of that classic mold of that guy’s just physically strong 68 to 610 is going to throw you around on the re on the glass and get a lot of rebounds like a Julius Randle comes to mind or and even Towns Towns is like a two position front court guy just because of what the league is and but you think of power forward Julius Randle Giannis is but even he’s a point. He’s just like a again, he’s the Greek freak, so he’s in his own category. But there are not lots of guys at least that are starting caliber or top six, seven rotation caliber that fit into that old school mold of this is a power forward. And so playing Paul at the four, although there are real concerns there because of their lack of rebounding because they’re just not that big overall, sticking there is not really going to get punished all that much against a lot of teams. Like there’s nobody that’s going to just say, “Hey, we’re dumping it into this guy in the post and we’re going to attack Paul George because he’s playing the four.” Right? The problem what you would run into is more about the lineupwide and the teamwide skill set, right? Where they don’t have plus rebounders at most positions. Joel at this point, while he was a good to very good rebounder when he was at his athletic best, we don’t know what Embiid is as a rebounder and rim protector right now because we don’t have a good sense of his health. So, that’s kind of the downside of it, right? is that because Joel’s so uncertain and because he needs to do some of those essential jobs that they’ve struggled at the last couple years, you do kind of want a guy in there who’s like, I just need someone who’s going to clean the glass, right? I need someone who’s going to be 610 and strong and just throw guys out of the way and end possessions. But I don’t think they really have that guy on the roster, right? maybe Jabari Walker, but I don’t think he’s really in a realistic battle to try to maybe he makes the rotation, but I don’t think he’s in consideration for this type of thing. So, Paul George is the default and offensively I think it works pretty well. Sure. Yeah. I mean, part of it is just simply who also fits best with Joel Embiid when you throw out your your best five to start the game. Maybe that’s the closing lineup as well. That guy’s out there and that is Paul George. It’s funny because as you were talking, Kyle, made me think back to what when we were discussing things with the NBA draft and previewing all those players and certainly they get the number three pick and we went through so many different prospects. It made me immediately think of when you would talk about CMBB and how they can’t rebound, they can’t do all that’s a that’s a power forward, right? Right. They can’t do all these things. Maybe a center, but if they got highlights the Yeah. if they if they traded back or maybe if they did land that six and didn’t get bumped out of course staying in that top seven there of what they did would that be an answer to the question that’s a little more easier where Paul George just simply slides over and he maybe even would have loved that where he can just slide over to his natural position at the three but when he signed here he also knew what he was getting himself into based on roster construction same thing even with Caleb Martin on the roster Derek you said two wings it’s three of them because Kelly Ubé was already out there with them as well. And now it’s the same problem. It they did not really they addressed it, but they didn’t address it really in the starting role until we discuss a little bit more about Trendon Watford and what we think. But it’s more by default that Paul George is going to be back at that power forward position. And it’s okay because in today’s game, unless you’re playing against the Oklahoma City Thunder with those two in their front court, the two double bigs that they have, or to your point, if it’s Carl Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson on the floor at once, or Julius Randall, and even with Julius Randall, yeah, he can punish you on the low block, but he also wants to dance on the perimeter a bit too, where he’s giving Paul George a bit of an out if that’s the defensive matchup in that particular case. But because of the the the flow of the offense of what you want it to be with him being a scorer and being a better shooter than he was a season ago, playing off of Joel Embiid, having the knowledge that he has as that player that can play anywhere in the front court next to you hope an elite big man that Joel Embiid is when he gets back out there on the floor that he makes up for a lot of what they lack in that size. Now, if they don’t correct their rebounding, that’s something that they’re going to have to continue to just hear about because it’s a team thing. You don’t have elite rebounding on the floor, everybody has to gang rebound and and crash the glass and make sure that they corral those loose basketballs that bounce off the rim or don’t give the New York Knicks the opportunities that they do to sneak in there and get those possessions. It’s the effort. Whether you want to be out there or not at that position, it’s the effort and it’s what you have to do. He’s the best player. He’s the best front court player that’s not named Joel Embiid. He is most likely going to be the one at the four. And it makes the most sense, I think, for right now with how we see things. It makes the most sense for Paul George to occupy that position once again in year number two in his Sixers tenure. Well, and here’s the counterpoint to all that, right? They’ve done this whole rebound by committee and oh, you know, if this guy chips in here and this guy chips in there and and we’ll just be a versatile, switchable team. They’ve done a version of that and it didn’t work out too well. Now, the obvious caveat there is that Joel’s not been healthy. Paul wasn’t healthy last year. Caleb Martin wasn’t healthy for most of the first. So, we didn’t even really get a fair look at here are a few wings on the floor. How does that look next to Joel Embiid and between really between the book ends of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxi, right? You none of us can sit here and say there was a long and reasonable look at whether that type of lineup would succeed in 2025, 2026, whatever. But that there’s still like the I don’t No, you’re going to have to prove to people that that style of lineup can work because the only thing that we’ve seen happen when they’ve done it is fail, right? Is failure. And as Paul George gets older, that means he’s probably going to be a little bit slower. He’s going to be less explosive. That’s going to make it harder to get the rebounds. that then puts more pressure on, you know, a Kelly Ubé, a Quinton Grimes, even a Tyrese Maxi to aggressively hunt for rebounds. And they all should, like, they should be gang rebounding, right? They should be taking time and having attention to detail to end possessions because it has been such a problem. But if someone like Maxi is not doing that, he is then not getting up the floor as quickly. He’s not that perimeter outlet that he’s catching the ball near the rim instead of on the wing out by the three-point line or half court where he can get a head of steam and get a kick ahead and then all of a sudden it’s two points or three points going the other way, it lends itself to probably a slower style. And while that’s okay sometimes, it can’t be the way they play all the time. And I don’t love that. that’ll probably be the default for how they set up to start a game. Now, I will say, you know, we started off noting that the loss of the two Martins, KJ and Caleb. Uh, but they also at the beginning of last year, it’s wild to say this in 2024 at that point. You know, you had Eric Gordon, you had Kyle Lowry, you had Reggie Jackson in the regular rotation along with, you know, obviously McCain who ended up coming into the rotation when injuries hit and Tyrese Maxi. Those are two pretty dreadful defensive rebounding guards. You replace them with VJ Edgecomb, with Quinton Grimes, even though they’re not 6869, they’re significantly better rebounders for their position than Jackson, then Lowry, than Gordon. So maybe they are better equipped to actually rebound as a team and have a collective group. It I sure hope so. They can’t be much worse. But theoretically, you know, if you have Joel Embiid there to anchor and maybe you’re able to then, you know, defend your assignment and not give up quite as much in terms of dribble penetration, maybe you’re not forcing as many rotations because you have some pretty strong defenders on the floor now. And the people you do have, even though they’re their guard and wing size, are a little better defensive rebounding. Nobody’s saying it’s going to be a you’re going to be a strong defensive rebounding team. They just don’t have the personnel for that. But I do wonder if they can be just, you know, a little bit closer to competent because that would go a long way. Paul George last season uh averaged 5.3 rebounds a game with 4.3 assists and we know that he averaged 16 points per game in the 41 that he played. You also had in this one you had let’s we forgot about Gershan Yabule 5.6 rebounds per game in the 70 games uh that he played. And that is a a key part too because like replacing him with Bona, there are obviously offensive trade-offs there, but like Bona should be even even if he’s chasing every block shot imaginable, he should be a better defensive rebounder than Yabooi was at the five. At the five, I hope he is. He averaged 4.2, but that was in limited time out there on the floor. 15.6 minutes per game for Demona. Bona was a 19.9 defensive rebounding rate and Yabuelli 16.3. So, he was a little bit better on a, you know, rate basis, but it’s a rookie and it’s, you know, who knows? Yeah. Hard to read into. Again, all the numbers from last year are just like whose line is it anyway rules where it’s this is all made up and the points don’t matter because half the year was spent where it was like, no disrespect to these guys, but it’s like O’Shea Brousette just came in on a 10day and oh, by the way, he’s starting tonight. They had 30 people play minutes for them pretty damn well by the way. So like that was it’s really they’re just pulling guys out of the G-League and thin air to remember the Pete Nate era. It was a wild year. It was a wild year. Not even his real name. Do you even remember his real name? Okay. Just making sure. Colin, you just keep saying it. I’d get that right in the quiz. Don’t test me. Colin Castle can rebound. Now he did. What are we doing? He has a couple rebounding games. Bri, can you put that graphic up one more time that you just had with the Paul George OKC and uh the the best versus the worst and just he was a dog that year in OKC. Yes, he was. He was real good. That was the MVP conversation year that he was that good. Certainly 18/19 versus 2425 the years that have passed. But one thing that I I do wonder if he when we saw him kind of just, you know, not being as aggressive as a score, he was looking to do other things like assist, pass the basketball, and he would occasionally get in there and get some rebounds. So, is he going to be one that does recognize that, all right, yeah, I am 35 years of age. I don’t have it like I used to. I have to do some other things to help us win that I couldn’t just easily do. Now, he could rebound anyway as an elite wing in the league, as a small forward. He did that. He was that good. He was a two-way player. We know how good he was. All NBA level, Olympian, all that stuff. But is he going to be one that recognizes that, yeah, I can’t do it like I used to. I have to contribute in some other ways where it’s not just going to be the scoring like you you guys talked about when I was mentioning could he get back to 20 and you guys said it you feel like maybe he’s more around that 16 to 18 points per game now at this stage of his career was his rebounds going to have to increase if that’s the case because the passing will be there the scoring will be a recipient of it from the other guys but he has to get in there and secure some of those boards to help out because he knows that Joel is not 100% and he has to be the one to do that whether he wants to be at the four or not and That’s that’s my opinion on how he has to approach it. Will he do so? I don’t know. We all, as Kyle said, the numbers are kind of skewed from a year ago. Some of the things we saw, heck, 5.3 rebounds, 5.2 rebounds for Quinton Grimes in 30 plus minutes. He’s not playing 34 minutes this year, I don’t think, for this team. They’re going to be a lot of minutes for Jared McCain and VJ Edgecom. He may still average five. He may, but y’all, he may not because of that. He’s a good defensive rebounder. So, let’s see how it all plays out. It’s an interesting conversation. The three book ends at the starting position. Tyrese, Maxi, Paul. Can you have three bookends? Is that possible? That’s a new book. What book? Savon’s operating in place of reality. We can’t even proceed. That is my book. The book ends of Tyrese Maxi, Paul George, and Joel Embiid. Who are the other two starters? We don’t know. Will Paul George be a starter at the four or at the three? We’re gonna talk about another candidate on the other side. And uh I think you all know who it is. We saw it in the opening graphic there on the thumbnail. Is he in Australia? He is not. Boo. He is Trendan W. Go fish. We’re going to talk about Trendan Wford. And could he be the starting four next to Paul George and Joel Embiid in the front court? We discuss it right here on this start of our season preview on this Tuesday. It’s the PHLY Sixers podcast coming to you live from the Xfinity Lounge. And guys, the season is right around the corner. Well, we just did. So, there’s that. So, there’s a great meme for that. It’s like someone shouting at their child all this polo on. I got horsepower. I got to see if I can find that. All right, cool. All right, we got to tell you though before we get to the next possible starter at the four position. That is our good friends from the Big Brothers Big Sisters. It’s the month of giving everyone. We’ve been asking you to give since the beginning of the month and we want to continue to do so. Celebrating BBBS month, we talked about signing up to become a big. Please go sign up bbbs.org. donate as well and we greatly appreciate it here at PHLY. All right, let’s get to the next candidate. Kyle, for the starting position, Horsepower. That’s right. What do you I love that man. Shout out to Two Chains, man. Shout out to Two Chains on that one. Yes. Thank you. Couple donations coming in by the way for Big Brothers Big Sisters. We appreciate that. I assume it was because of the meme and not Devon’s uh passionate pitch. Show the meme again and get more in there. We really appreciate it. All right, Kyle. The other candidate, Trendan Wford. Bri had put the uh graphic up a little bit earlier just of the measurements of the two guys. 68 believe 237 for Trendan Wford. Five years in the league now ting a two-year deal. And for the first time really outside of his early Portland days where he didn’t play as much, but he played a little bit. not an integral part though. Um, one playoff season with the Brooklyn Nets and a different opportunity here for him though, which we’ve talked about a lot since his signing with the Sixers of what it could look like, what his role could be. Is it off the bench? Is it in a starting role? And in this case, could it be in the starting role at the four? What would it look like? How successful could they be? Well, do you think the the future could be bright for I think so. For Trenton Watford, Devon, let’s make perhaps perhaps the future. is so bright that it’s presented by Shady Rays. Shady Rays future bright shady future is bright for Trendon Watford. We hope and I there are a lot of I know HFA one of our regular listeners, our dieh hard supporters is a big big believer in Trendan Watford and I feel like the arrested development scene where he’s like there are dozens of us. Uh Trendon Watford, the difficulty with projecting him is just that it’s the projection, right? Because in Brooklyn, he did get to play the point forward, ball in his hands, run the offense type of role. That’s been his mo his whole career, dating back to LSU, even early on in Portland, right? That part of the the tricky part about those limited minutes where he’s with Dame Lillard is Dame’s going to have the ball. So, you know, what value do you provide to a team? So, there’s a little bit of that here, right? He comes in and Maxi’s the guy. Joel Embiid’s going to get lots of touches. Paul George is going to get his touches. You’re developing McCain. You’re developing Edgecom. Where do you find the opportunities for Watford to be his best self individually? And how does that project to this makes the team better? because he is not for, you know, a power forward or a guy who’s power forward sized. He is not an elite rebounder. He is not a stretch four, right? Like he’s improved as a shooter, but he is a bu a little bit slow and reluctant to shoot still. How does all that fit? The way he fits in the case for him to play at the four is that he’s just a smart basketball player, right? He makes good floor reads. He has a good understanding of positioning. He’s not the greatest athlete in the world, but he’ll make the right rotations. He’ll be smart about smart and intentional about where he places himself within a a series of offensive plays. And you try to zoom out and you say, “All right, if he’s not going to be on the ball, how do we weaponize this guy’s skill set?” And at the four, where you use him more as the ball screener with a maxi, with a McCain, with an edgecomb, we’ve talked a lot, hey, maybe this guy will be more of a short role playmaker. Maybe this guy can be someone who adds a plus decision maker to the lineup. And I do think he is a plus decision maker. That’s something they just didn’t have many of last year, right? They might have had one or two of those guys or one and a half of those guys. You talking about short roll guys or plus decision makers? Plus decision makers. You ba basically you had what Maxi and 23 games of Jared McCain would be what you would count. So outside of that and Maxi was a conservative decision maker too. exactly push the envelope all that much. I agree. So the hope with Watford is that while on paper it’s a clunkier fit than I think people realize who have not watched him in depth over the years. I think he’s just a smart enough and a skilled enough player that you can expect him to adapt to the situation. And I think I’ve said it all summer. Now it’s almost not summer anymore, which is I know Derek is very sad about in his plaid shirt over there. He’s putting on the long sleeves. I I think once you see Tyrese M have long sleeves on. Yeah, but I’m not as vocal about, oh, I can’t stand the cold as I mean, look, when it gets in the 60s, I’ve got to adjust. What do you want? Now we’re doing weather shows. When Tyrese Maxi gets trapped, when Jared McCain gets trapped, if teams throw pressure at Edgecomb, Watford is going to be this really great release valve for the offense where you can trust him to make a good pass, trust him to drive to the basket. Like, that’s where his value is going to come. I just don’t know that that’s starting lineup, right? That might be more valuable on the second unit as some of the stars come out and they need more of the, hey, you’re going to lift guys up on the bench. I feel like that might end up being the best spot for him, but he’s certainly positional scarcity and game intelligence are enough to throw him in the mix for a starting role. Yeah, it’s it’s tough if I were and look fundamentally I think like because you’re not it’s not like a Paul George or or a um Watford. It’s really Watford or like Kelly or Watford and VJ if he grows into it or Watford verse McCain if he ends up, you know, you want to go small and you think you can overcome that. And fundamentally, I just think all three of those are better players than Watford at this stage. So, like I am not going to make the case that Watford should start because I don’t think he should. I think Paul George should be the starting four and then you fill that last spot in with one of those three that I just mentioned. But if you were to make the case, because I agree with Kyle, like I think Wford at his core is a positive decision maker. The question is how do you leverage that to create opportunities for others? And you know, one way throughout his career is to be on bad teams. And you’re like, “All right, go ahead and create. we don’t really have that many creators anyway. We need your passing. That’s great. That’s sort of the role that he has played, but you don’t want that to be here. If he is creating, you know, sort of initiating a lot of possessions, you know, a lot of things have gone wrong this year. So, the other way is, you know, we’ve mentioned before, find ways to leverage like Tyrese Maxis and the gravity that he has to create advantages for Watford to pick apart. Sometimes in an ideal world that would be as like a spot up shooter where he has gravity, Tyrese forces a double team, maybe Joel forces a double team, kicks it out, defender has to close out, Watford can then get into the paint off that dribble. That’s not really what Watford is though. Like he shoots so deliberately and so low volume, people are just not going to close out of control. So, I think what Kyle brought up there with sort of, you know, allowing him to be a short roll guy is one of those ways where you can leverage like Tyrese’s gravity or maybe McCain’s gravity, get a rotation, get somebody helping off of him just a little bit so then he can catch the ball, go, get downhill and make decisions out of that because I do think fundamentally that decision-m is a real threat. He just doesn’t really have, you know, the foot speed to be a primary creator. Doesn’t have the spot up shooting threat to be an offball catch and shoot guy. So, you’ve got to find creative ways to get him on the move. The thing that always stands out to me, and I know it’s one of his close friends. They’ve known each other for a long time, is Tyrese Maxi simply saying, “We have not had a player like this on our team and we missed that last year.” Which, by the way, I also you should not have like Kyle’s point, what do they have like one and a half positive decision makers? You should not be making that kind of comment. Like, it really would be nice if somebody that could actually create was a reliable decision maker. I think they got like Maxi and McCain as a start. I think VJ could be I agree. But I agree. Yeah. Yeah. But you can’t take it for granted is is more the point. But my push back too with that one was well Paul George is right there. He’s the similar he’s a much better version of what Trend Rford does. He’s just not as slow and all of that stuff. We we know with the discussion that we’re having here. But with all that, with the short role, with him not exclusively handling the basketball like he did in Brooklyn and sometimes with those lineups in Portland, it is going to be something that, as we’ve talked about, you cannot have too many ball handlers out there on the floor. The issue with him, he doesn’t shoot as well. But can he, like you said, leverage those things that he does, those push shots when he does get into the middle of the paint, those floaters, those runners, those push shots that he makes and makes at a pretty good level, pretty good clip overall that we’ve seen with both Brooklyn and specifically Brooklyn, but also in his earlier days with the Portland Trailblazers. Those things matter because we saw last year that yes, they could score, but they weren’t really that good at scoring. And you need people to be able to make some of those intermediate shots. They knew who he was when they signed him with the fact that he can play on ball, do those things in the middle of the floor to get some of those shots to knock down there. But also finding and kicking on the perimeter behind the three-point line, seeing those guys cutting back door for some of those bounce passes that can be an easy layup or finish there at the rim. Those are the type of things snatching a rebound as we just talked about getting it off the glass and pushing and going where you don’t necessarily have to look for that guard to be the outlet where you can start that break. You can initiate that break hitting those two or it could be a trail man where you can find him as well. His ball handling is well so good that you don’t have to worry about him in the open floor. We’re like get the ball out of that guy’s hands. That’s not him. He can do those things. So his his role though is I think coming off the bench like Derek and Kyle pointed out his best role is going to be coming off the bench and being a big part of that second unit. Whoever is going to be the leader of that second unit that will play itself out that will show itself out in time. But it is a good problem to have to have him Edgecomb we think McCain possibly coming off the bench or Quinton Grimes whoever you feel like might be the starting two on this basketball team and we will get to that discussion another day perhaps. Yes we will. And with it that’s a pretty good three to come off the bench immediately to help out with those things that they sorely missed a year ago that Tyrese Maxi talked about. but surely missed a year ago. All bottled up in three positions right there. You can look at it as you got a point guard, a shooting guard, and a threeman or a fourman right there. You just fill in the other spots coming off the bench with those or the mixing and matching of all. Now, defensively could be a problem because he is slowooted. He he is not all that great. He’s going to get caught in cross matches. They’re going to hunt him down. Even though he has good positional size, they feel like they can put the ball on the floor and get by him. That will be a challenge for Trendan Wford, but still a good signing that they had this off season. Tyrese Maxi keeps talking them up. He’s been in the gym, which is good with those guys in Camden, and I want to see how it plays. He’s one of the more intriguing players of this offseason. I want to see how Nick Nurse includes him into the mix with this basketball team. Yeah. And adding on to some of what you said, Devon, like as a grabandgo guy, he’s someone that can lead a break himself, right? And so, circling back to what was said about if Maxi has to help gang rebound, that slows him down. If Watford can be a good enough defensive rebounder to help alleviate the concerns there, that allows the Maxis, the McCaines, the Edgecombs to get that early jump, to get up the floor. Watford can push it, you know, the first eight to 10 feet and then, hey, just a quick hit ahead. If teams are flaring out to cover Maxi McCain out on the wings, well, Watford has a competent enough handle and the ability to get to the basket, can play through contact, score at the rim in transition. So, that’s nice there. It really for me comes down to if he improves as a rebounder. And last year was actually a down year for him there in terms of the rate stuff, which coincided with him taking on more offensive responsibility. So, that could be part of it. I would be more inclined to think Trendan Watford coming here and understanding like I’m on a minimum but I’m with a team that it’s a higher profile team. It it’s you know I have veteran help around. I have Joel Embiid, Maxi, Paul George, probably Quinton Grimes. Like I have these guys who can score and do other stuff. If I come in and I commit myself to rebounding, I commit myself to the little things that I can make more money. I can, you know, keep getting these contracts and, you know, stack it up, stack it up, stack it up. I’m more inclined to think he will lock in with that type of mindset than 35year-old Paul George is all of a sudden gonna like, hey, I’m I’m sacrificing my scoring and I’m all of a sudden going to be, you know, 2019 Paul George who was a much better athlete who was able to impact the game in more ways more often. I could see that happening with Watford. Do I think it’s the most realistic thing? probably not, but I can certainly see the case for why you’d like him on the floor as much as possible because I spent all the last season watching a team that had very few passers and good decision makers and it really solidified for me how important it is to just have guys who can dribble, pass, and see the floor. It is once you go without it for most of a season, you will be begging for it every single chance that you get. Even if he can’t shoot, he can still dribble past. That’s the thing. It’s not even that he can’t shoot. It’s that he won’t a lot of the time. Not the way you would want him to shoot. No, he didn’t shoot well last year, but he had two admittedly very low volume seasons of around 39% from three before that. He knows that that’s the key to his future, right? I think if if anyone around him has any sense, they’re probably telling him, “Get up a thousand jumpers a day in the off season. Quicken up the release. Just be in the mindset of I have to shoot more because that’s ultimately probably going to be what makes or breaks his NBA career.” Yeah. The the other thing too that you just brought up going off of once again the the transition off of the rebounds. If he rebounds, but he also has those guys already ahead. We talk about that kick ahead to get that break started and you can fill in that gap. You can fill in that lane by getting the ball. Now he he’s not really catching Tyrese Maxi. No. Uh maybe very few people can, right? Maybe keep up to be fair. But if it’s a secondary break, if if it you know they have to kind of reset things just a little bit and wait for that kind of little hockey term that odd man advantage there and you you do that just getting it and his the passing knowledge that he has the good decision-m to how many times will we talk about it get kick the ball ahead and take advantage of the what you have there which is an opportunity to get a break started and everybody else can just simply catch up. So no I’m sorry. Go ahead. I was just going to say with the exception of James Harden, the Sixers haven’t really had any good outlet passers like ever. I think he can do that. Yeah, I do think he can at times, but he didn’t he just didn’t do it that often and he wasn’t catching up to anybody. That was he was just going to be a trail man or nothing. He’s a trail man. Pull up three in transition. Final break here uh as we come back and we continue this conversation with the starting four. We’ll have some news and notes a little bit later. Maybe we’ll get a little some uh some photos that we might have saw last night as well. Maybe we’ll do that. Musclewatch. Hashtag muscle musclewatch. We’ll do it all when we get back right here on the PHLY final final break here on the show. And guys, you’ve heard me say it time and time again. I have no clue when it comes to home repair. Are there any other dark course candidates of this? It’s just I really don’t think so. Really? It’s just those two. And really the conversation is about how do they want to play, right? Because I don’t we started this converation from the perspective of there are three locks, right? assuming they’re healthy. Three guys are books are absolutely the three. Someone said earlier Devon’s in the the book dimension. Paul George, Tyrese Maxi, Joel Embiid will start if they’re healthy. So, it’s really about the other two spots, right? And Kelly Ubé has been a penciled in starter for most of the last two years. And we’re going to get to that part of the equation tomorrow, like how do they set up? But that’s really what impacts this decision. And it’s either going to be they want to get another guardwing type on the floor or Nick Nurse is so concerned about needing a guy who looks or is built like a four that someone like Watford gets a chance. But yeah, I don’t I can’t see anybody really getting into the mix. And the only way that could change is Jabari Walker would have to have like the greatest preseason in the history of basketball. and he’s looked good in Rico Hines runs, but I’m not too optimistic that uh he’s going to beat out anybody for a starting job on opening night. Can I interest you in a young socialite? Don’t even start with me today. He said he’s not retiring, huh? Yeah. Nate said he’s not retired and posted on Instagram that he’s going fishing. You guys in Australia. Connect the dots. He’s not even backstate side yet. No, but I don’t think a Faze Clan turns its eyes to a lonely man in Australia. I don’t think there’s any real realistic like oddball option. It’s PGM Wford. Yeah. And and to your point is stylistically, how much of a difference is it from George to what Watford is as a as a guy? And you’ll be asking a lot of Wford too, never being in that position of never doing so in Portland, not doing it in Brooklyn, is being a starter. And we’ve talked so much about him. How does he elevate his game playing a potential playoff team versus what he’s experienced in the past of lower minutes where we expect him to get a lot more minutes here on Nick Nurse’s squad. How different that looks as a starter. And we’ve said it, look, if Paul George is not ready for training camp to start, he’s probably going to be wearing that blue jersey with Tyrese Maxi and Kelly Ubé and whomever else is going to be out there. And that may be the first look we see against the New York Knicks on October 2nd for that Thursday afternoon game. Maybe that is trending Watford and we’ll just simply get a good look. We’ll get an early look of what that may seem like. I I hope we get an opportunity to talk to him on media day to kind of pick his brain on what his experience has been like so far with his new teammates in these pickup games, these these open runs that they have because once again, it’s just a really really intriguing possibility with him of how Nick Nurse uses him and Ramid has him in the starting lineup with the rest of those guys as his starting five. I still start Kelly Ubé. We’ll talk a little bit more about that. you know whether it’s what position that is could he be in place of a three or a two or even at that four spot and not necessarily four but just the win ve it you know but Ramid and Hea talking about Watford he’s got a lot of fans well a decent amount of fans at least so far that we’ve seen there’s intrigue he’s one of the by default right he’s a young guy that they brought in They’re sick of old people. It’s like get the young guy in the game. I I’m behind that. I’m all for it. Well, it’s also like Kyle brought it up. We’ve been so lacking in just any kind of creativity and reliable decision-m that I think when they watch him play, he’s going to have even more fans. That doesn’t mean that he should be starting. That doesn’t even mean that he is necessarily a better player than we expected because I do think he’s got some, you know, he takes some pretty significant stuff off the table when you try to put him in that starting lineup. But I think it’s just gonna be so refreshing of like, oh, oh, so this is what like good creative passing basketball looks like. Gosh, we haven’t had it much of this at all. Nick Batum with his style of play. Remember how much of a revelation it was that Nick Batum could throw an entry pass to Joel Embiid? Trendon Wer is going to get that assignment when he’s out there. I sure hope so. He’s going to be the entry passer from the sideline or underneath the basket. whatever it is, he’s going to get that he’s going to get that nod. So, uh, folks, this is the beginning of our preview as we start to season preview for the Philadelphia 76ers. We’ve talked about so much this off season, but with things getting so much closer to media day and training camp and their first preseason game, we need to start diving in a little bit more as to how we discuss some things. As Kyle said, we’re going to talk about the other open starting position and who should occupy that one. Maybe it is trended Watford that Ra like Ramid says. Maybe it’s someone else that we’ve discussed so much this summer and we get into that. Maybe it’s someone that we’re waiting to just simply make a decision to come back on whatever offer he’s going to do. I don’t know. But we’re going to talk about that as well and so much more as we lead into the media day, training camp, pre-season games. We’re going to start international vacation business trip. Yeah, we’re really going to start to get into it starting today obviously, but going forward previewing this season and what things would really look like. We’ll get to our predictions again, make ourselves look bad a little bit later as we get closer to the season, not just with the Sixers, but around the NBA. We’ll do it all as we have been doing these last few years. Well, this would be my second time doing the season preview. Why? What happened? I was I’ll let it drop. I’ll let it drop. All right. Thank you. I made enough jokes earlier in the week. I bought it up. I set myself brother you too with this thing. There we go. All right, Bri, let’s show what was dropped late last night by the Sixers and just some more some more teasers as we get we talk about getting closer. They are showing us as we get closer. They are in the lab as they call it. And you got new hair for Kelly. We just talked about Kelly. So, it’s appropriate that Brie shows the first one with Kelly Ubé. He’s got one. Joelle was looking a little slimmer there in some of the pictures that they they showed there and with new hair for Jared McCain. We said that when he had the hat, he had the hat and we didn’t see the the kind of however you say that flowing out. I don’t know if it’s flowing out but whatever. Got looking trim. Yes, he is. Yes, you got VJ in there with Joelle. People really like this one. They I saw a side by side that there was someone who posted it next to Miami Shack with young Dwayne Wade was a So, whatever you think of that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, and then Oh, that’s a pretty good one right there. Little high five between Kelly and Justin. Justin wearing his new number 11 switching from 19. I did a double take. Honestly, I had forgotten he switched the number and was like 11. What happened there? Now, here’s the one that I think people really gravitated toward. Joel is looking pretty slim in that photo and obviously looks can be deceiving. It’s just one photo and we can’t tell if he has working legs or not underneath the rest of that photo, but at least looks to be starting from a good place, which is always a nice thing to see before the season starts. And at this point last year, like we had they were giving us nothing in terms of Joel content, photo, nothing. That doesn’t mean anything, but like you would think after the year they just went through, they were going to be extra cautious with, you know, getting any kind of excitement behind him because they know how how that can turn and go sideways. So for them to even be putting down 5-second videos and pictures in their preseason stuff, I think that’s at least mildly mildly encouraging. Ramid calling them slim bead. I think you nailed it though, Derek. It it’s really about the fact that he’s in the gym and working with the rest of these guys because even when Joelle’s been relatively healthy coming into a season, a lot of his work is being done away from the team. It’s with Drew Hanlin, he’s out in LA, he’s, you know, other places. So, for him to be in the gym with all these guys, I think is a nice thing to see, especially being there with VJ Edgecomb and and like actively taking on a role with a kid because he’s been in the exact spot, right? He’s the number three pick. He knows the the pressure and the expectations and everything that comes with it. So, even though there’s not going to be a lot of direct, hey, this is how you do this because they play such different games and they’re much different players, it’s nice to see him working with the rook before camp even opens up next week. No, it is, man, because we talked about so much. No update on the surgery, nothing that we’ve been hearing at all. Various reports from so many different places of, hey, I heard he hasn’t even been in the gym yet. I heard this, I heard that. And here he is. He’s been in the gym with these. We don’t know how long, but he’s been there. They’re they’re putting these things out. And even if he’s not able to run like we would like for him to run just as of yet, still form shooting and doing all those things and getting some familiarity with why he can’t move the way he wants to. But if he’s out there with Trendan Waford and they’re going through some of those pick and pick and pop sets that we know are so James Harden and Tyresese Maxi have done so well. If he’s going to be handling the basketball, he might be in some of those with Joel Embiid. That action needs to be perfected with him. And the same thing with VJ Edgecomb and Jared McCain who didn’t get a lot of floor time with Embiid from a season ago. So, good to see him back in the gym. Good to see the Sixers posting some of this stuff in the lab as they call it. And getting those updates is pretty cool. Can’t wait to see him on media day to see how he actually looks when we get there. And look, again, I can’t stress enough, it is just a half of his body and it’s a still image, right? But when you’re worried about his lower extremities and you know how does his knee react to practices, games, whatever, if he can play at a lower weight and play effectively, that’s just better for his feet, his knees, all the things that he’s had trouble with over the years. If that helps him even a little bit with managing symptoms with just staying off of the injury report, that’s a great thing. So, I certainly seems like as far as we can tell, things are trending in the right direction. We’ll get to talk with Joel on media day and that’ll uh and I did do a uh let’s just say use the word ramp it up. Oh, you said it. Ramp it up. I got to put Hit the bell. It’s in there. Hit the bell. I got to get it. That’s a fine for Devon in the jar. Yes, Lee. Yes, Lee. Ramp it up. I’ll put one in the ramp it up jar. I put a put a dollar in there for the ramp it up jar. You just said that like five times. I’m only put one dollar in there. That’s not You’re not getting five out of me. I’m just It’s It’s good to see him in the gym. He looks like he’s in pretty good shape. And we’ll get to talk to him in a week and a half and see not just where his body’s at, but where his head is at, right? Because it’ll be the first time that he’s had major public comments since the big article dropped earlier this summer. And we’ll get to get inside his mind a little bit. And it is like we can talk about just the like it’s just just a picture. pictures can be deceiving. Like that is so noticeably slimmer. Like he did not look like that three or four years ago. I do think he’s taking that weight loss seriously. Last year he was he looked much better. Absolutely lost 20 pounds last year. Now will that translate into the knee being, you know, less symptomatic? Who knows? It can’t hurt. It can’t hurt. Coleman pots Photoshop. I’m willing to buy it. We’ll see next. We’ll see uh when we get to media day and all that. By the way, that Trendan Wford conversation, as Kyle pointed out, was presented by Shay Rays. The future is bright for Trendan Wford in his new role with the Philadelphia 76. Eugene said, “I still need to read that article.” I mean, you need to start now. You might start You might finish by media day if you start now. I don’t know how quick or slow of a reader you are, Eugene. So, get to it. It’s legitimately like an hour long read. And it’s a great article. That’s I loved it. It was great. It was entertaining, but it’s long. Final news and notes. Got to give a shout out. Paige Beckers, rookie for the Dallas Wings, named the W rookie of the year. Her averages on the season, 19 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists. She shot 47.7 from the floor. Struggled from three. 33 from three. Thought she would shoot a little bit better, but uh the team wasn’t great. a lot of attention towards her, but she answered the call as a a a highly anticipated rookie coming in all-star year one, number five in scoring in the W this year uh overall as a rookie and I expect her to be I think on one of those all WNBA teams. So, shout out Paige Becker, rookie of the year for the her debut in the W. Congratulations. She’s going to be very good in in that league. Very good. All right. Is Paul George going to start as a power forward for the Sixers, or could a young player like Trendon Watford add some size in the 76ers’ frontcourt? Debating what Nick Nurse’s plan will be for Philadelphia’s frontcourt around Joel Embiid.

  1. I believe Jabari Walker will win the 4 position at some point this season he's a excellent defensive rebounder can stretch the floor & great in his role you don't have to worry about him doing things on the court that he shouldn't plus I believe he'll be a good fit next to Embid everything Joel can't do aswell as he use to Jabari Walker can fill that void…

  2. The 76ers front office is horrible. They just don't understand how to build a team. The last few champions had a pf or the ability to play big. The 76ers are just to small. Also, our small guys are good enough to out play bigger player players. We're to small at pg & pf.

  3. To pay PG 50 million and expect him to play the 4 makes no sense when his strength is the 3 position. Given his age, the team needs to play toward his strength. You drafted Brohme and signed Watford they need to play the 4

  4. Only if Kelly could add 2 inches, he would be perfect. Even though, I think with him being healthy this year, it's gonna be tough for the new guys. PG will have to play the 4 some, even if he doesn't want to. It will be Nicks job to keep him from falling asleep in the corner
