Reds Postcast: Cincinnati Reds SHUTOUT By St. Louis Cardinals; Offensive BRUTAL Performance

[Music] This is the Reds post, your instant game reaction for the Cincinnati Reds, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. [Music] Good evening, Reds fans, and welcome to another edition of the Lockdown Reds post brought by Lockdown Reds and the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. I’m Tim Daniel. I am a lifelong Cincinnati Reds fan. I’ve been podcasting about this team for 5 years at publications such as Late Night Reds and the Riverfront. And I want to thank you all for spending some time with us today as we discuss a very annoying loss for the CE Reds to the St. Louis Cardinals three to nothing at Butch Stadium. If you’re just checking us out for the first time, welcome. We are so glad to have you. Please be sure to hit that notification button. So although I have just what 11 games left throughout the whole offseason you’ll get Jeff and Steve Monday through Friday unlocked on Reds. Today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel right now new customers can bet just $5 and if your bet wins you’ll get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. Download the app today. Well on today’s show the Reds are shut out again. Andrew Abbott couldn’t get to the fifth inning but at least the bullpen did their thing and they were at least solid today. So, we had to give somebody some sort of credit, I guess. And of course, I’m going to hear from you all, our everydayers, with your comments, your thoughts, and everything else in between. Let’s get started. This is what you’ll be talking about. And with a whimper, the Cincinnati Red’s game, I mean, Cincinnati Red’s opportunity is gone. Three hits tonight as a team. Can you imagine fighting for your postseason life, trying to do everything, you know, you’re you’re scratching and clawing, you’re hanging on very little. Mathematically, you’re in it. But we all know in reality that that is not the case. Three hits, three walks. The same theme each and every week that we’ve had throughout the whole season. Not being able to hit in situational hitting. It’s honestly amazing that we are at this point in the year and we are having the same conversation we had in April, in May, in June of they can’t hit with scoring position. They can’t get the big hit that they always need. How many games have I come in here and been like, you know, guys, they were just one big hit away. Maybe tonight they probably weren’t one big hit away. St. Lewis was I mean Mike McCreio was really good so I you know I like to give him credit but the fact that they had six base runners tonight and couldn’t do a damn thing with him is astonishing. The fact that we’ve had this conversation how many times this year? I tried to I didn’t have time for the show start to count how many times the Reds got shut out this year. Um the answer is a lot. I don’t have an exact amount, but um yeah, a lot is the right way to put it. So, let’s see. There’s obviously the three in April. Yeah, I don’t have time to count it all up, but you guys get the gist of what I’m saying. Um it’s happened too many darn times for this baseball team, for a team that’s like like we’ve all kind of declared them declared them done, but mathematics say they’re still in it at least until next week. um to just not be able to put anything together in situations like this. It’s honestly astonishing to me how much they look overmatched, how often they look overmatched. And don’t me wrong, there’s a lot to it. You know, I know everyone wants to say fire Chris, fire Chris Vala, and I’m not necessarily going to go here and like, you know, be the the grand marshal of the Chris Valica parade, but at some point you need good hitters. Do I like his concept? Do I like his ideas all the time? No. No, I don’t. I think his like anti-home run thing that he said earlier in the year was not a good look. But I also don’t seem to understand this idea of like everything’s his fault. Everything’s Tito’s fault. Those guys haven’t been great. I’m not going to sit here and act like they have. But at some point, things got to fall on the players. It’s not one thing that they’ve gotten shut out so many times. It’s one-run losses. It’s this whole thing where they just find a way to kind of not be able to get anything to happen. So, it’s these times, you know, 01 like Michael says right here, Reds follow a game where they score 10 plus runs by scoring 01 and two early. The run differential is very high. Not shown by their record. Bingo. You always know if they have a big game like they had the other day that they had last night, they scored what 11 runs. They had this huge like they scored a lot of runs last three innings. Um, it’s just it’s it’s unbelievable at this point. And their whole idea to save the season, to just bring this glimmer of hope back was to move LA de la Cruz to the seven spot. Um, sure, let’s just roll with that. I don’t know. There’s so many people to just kind of blame for where they’re at at this point. And it’s so frustrating because tonight was not the example, but we’re having these conversations where we have these nights. How many times we had these nights, guys, where we come on here, I turn the mic on, I’m like do my whole jokey spiel just to hide my pain of how bad the baseball team really is. And we’re like, man, but they pitch so well. Start didn’t pitch very well tonight. We’ll get to that in the next segment. But they just always found a way. And you know, you knew it too, right? Will Benson gets two, gets the hit, there’s two on, no out, double play. And you get to the situation where, you know, you literally got from the three splits of the the lineup, there was one hit in the top to third of the lineup, the middle third, and the bottom third. Gavin Lux, Will Benson, Ellie de la Cruz. And it’s uh yeah, it’s, you know, it’s a talent issue. There’s certainly a talent issue there and it’s something that’s got to be fixed. We can’t do this conversation again next year. We’re getting to like I don’t even know if I want my daughter to be a Reds fan because I don’t know if I want her to be as annoyed as I am on a night basis. I want her to enjoy her life. Now, that’s not to go say I want her to go be a Cardinals fan or a Pirates fan by any means, but I don’t know if I want to put her through this every night. It’s just not fun. My fun is talking to you guys and you guys make me feel better about all this. So, I appreciate all of that. You know who I didn’t appreciate tonight was Andrew Rabbit. And I thought last week we got rid of the whole issue of, you know, falling apart post Allstar Break. It came back tonight. We’re going to talk about Andrew Rabbit starting more after this. I was just thinking to myself, do you guys know? So, the idea of the show is three segments, right? I come here, I do the opening, what, you know, we talk about the turning point of the game, we do the player of the game. Fun thing to do. Love doing it. When they have these games where they score no runs and have three hits, you know how hard it is to think of three seconds. Um, these are my struggles that I’m sharing with you all. But, thank you all as always for spending some time with me here on the Reds Post. It’s so fun to have you guys here because you make my day every day, no matter how the Reds are playing. If you are just checking me out for the first time, thank you so much. Welcome. I’m so sorry you’re catching on when the season is all but over, both literally and theoretically. But you will have Jeff and Steve Monday through Friday on Locked on Reds. I’m sure they’ll have me come hang out here and there. Uh hopefully all the time. Jeff, Steve, I know you’re listening. Uh but I want to be here as much as I possibly can because I want to be here for the good or the bad of the offseason. So, let’s get to the turning point in tonight’s game. Time to reveal where the game was won or lost. It’s the turning point. Turning point in tonight’s game would simply be Thomas Sexy hitting just his second home run of the season, putting them up two nothing in the bottom of the third. How can you be down three nothing and honestly in the third inning and feel like you’re toast? Is that sad? You feel like you can’t your team like when they fall down three nothing can’t put a rally together. Andrew Abbott tonight. I don’t use this ter word often. I don’t like to use this word often. He was not very good. He was kind of pathetic tonight if we’re going to be honest. And I know he got into the fifth inning and that’s nice, but he and I know he has seven strikeouts tonight and he didn’t walk anybody, but dude, they need the the starts that they’ve gotten three of these last four games from Green Lola and Abbott are unacceptable. They’re simply unacceptable. You can’t have all three guys turn in days like this when you are hanging on for everything you got. These are three guys that we said are uh you know ace material, right? And I still stand by it. I still think they are. Specifically Abbott and Green. I think Ledo has it in him, but obviously we know what his issue is is uh not saying on the mound, but the fact that all three guys turned in stinkers the second what the second to last week of the season. This is a team that they need their starting pitching to be the thing that carries them, right? Like we’ve had the conversation on here if they somehow snuck in the playoffs, no one will want to play them. They know they can outscore them, but they know that there’s very few teams that can pitch with them. Tonight just kind of was just one of these games where they needed so much more from him and he let everybody he’ll let them down. I shouldn’t say let everybody down. Um, and Michael says it here. I think Abbott’s just tired now. Sure, I get it. I do. I can’t imagine for a position player playing 162 days a year and being a p starting pitcher having to literally throw 100 miles an hour every fifth day and having your bullpen in the middle of the week and then having your scout what you have got to do and all that stuff. I’m sure that is taxing. By the way, Chase Burn’s going to pitch again. What was the point? Just thought about that. But Abbott frustrating and I’m not blaming him. Obviously, when you’re down three nothing, your team should still find a way to be able to be in a game and they weren’t. So, that’s not his fault, but I thought he held his own. Not really. He definitely needed to be better and the Reds need to be better. And I feel like I’m going to be saying that a lot these next few weeks. But whatever. At least the bullpen did their job tonight. And we’re going to talk about that said bullpen and more after this. There we go. All right. The NFL season is here as FanDuel is making sure you’re ready for kickoff with a can’t miss offer. This is the locked on player of the game. Let’s just give it to Big Sugar because at least he’s fun. But I don’t know if anyone really deserved it. I think uh I think Jason on the Lake could be locked on player of the game. I think Dylan Kramer could be locked on player of the game. I think Michael Blackman could be locked on player of the game. I think William Wright, you all are the locked on player of the game because you guys showed up tonight more than the Reds did. All right, so the bullpen at least did their job. It’s not their fault that the starting pitching wasn’t on par. It’s not their fault that their hitters couldn’t do anything. But the bullpen tonight did clear up four and a third of shut out ball, giving up no hits and just one walk, but somehow only having two strikeouts. Kind of fascinating. So Scott Barlo comes out, does an inning and a third. Zack Maxwell does an inning and then Bred Sudter does an inning. Um I can’t do math. That’s three and a third. Reds have got me so mad I can’t even do numbers. Um, but there’s one thing that’s been bad Thursday. We’ve kind of constantly had a lot of bullpen conversations, but tonight they were at least solid. It’s just unfortunate didn’t mean anything because the team couldn’t get everything going. So, with that in mind, I think it’s fair to say we can put a bow on this one where the Reds are losers to the St. Louis Cardinals three to nothing. The Cardinals have three runs on eight hits, no errors. The Reds have zero runs on three hits and zero airish. Your winning pitcher tonight is Michael McGrevy. He is now seven and three. Andrew Abbott is your loser. He is now nine and seven. And picking up his fifth save of the season is Riley O’Brien. And now we go to a chance to clinch this series tomorrow as Brady Singer will take the hill for the Reds. He is 13-10 with a 394 and he’ll go against Andre Palante who is 6 and14 with a 534 erra. First pitch is at 115 for the Reds come home for the lengthy home stand and this and their and their games at GBP. Everyone, thank you so much for spending some time with me tonight. It’s been real. It’s been fun, but the Reds are not real fun. I’m Tim Daniel. I will see you all tomorrow. Be sure to tune in for Jeff and Steve Unlocked on Reds as well. Take it easy, everybody.

The Cincinnati Reds fell 3-0 to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium. Andrew Abbott struggled, lasting only 4 2/3 innings while allowing the Cardinals to set the tone early. Offensively, the Reds were overmatched, managing just three hits and three walks in a quiet effort at the plate. Cincinnati will now look to bounce back and secure the series in Wednesday’s rubber match.

  1. JEFF, GOOD SHOW, MONEY IS number 1 for building a team but Number 2 is ballpark if you are in denver cincy phillie and yanks. BILLYBALL, where was that played moneyball were was that played giant oakland coll. No one played billyball in rockies land did they. Rockies something street bombers remember? Only time the won. Bangers all. All park number two. PROVE HOW MANY HOMERUNS DOES ARRON JUDGE HIT IN S.F. monstor right field and dead air. No short porch. HONESTLY Judge would have to learn to pull ball and not wait on pitches. He wouldn't be this Aaron judge.

  2. ballpark, team has to fit the ballpark, Why we are at a disadvantage at home? Every other team has more home run potential than us. We go on the road, they have more pop, the pirates suck. The other day they had 98 home runs as a team. We have no deep threat, ala football whats' that do, 8 in box then you can't run. You can win with no deep threat. You can't have just one guy you pitch around. I pitched I look at the moment, I fear no reds hitter. Why does that matter fear which I had little of GREAt hitting team behind me eases my fear a team with no boomers no fear and in the moment I don't fear them because they can't hurt me. I not giving up three singles in row to scor one run if I do that all you get. Screw that. Why doesn't that matter? You're making the opposition pitcher better. No fear means I'm making my pitches I'm not worried about a mistake and if I do, that' not ball game, because against reds my mistake is a single not a run. No fear, plus my team can go deep anytime and I know it a walk a n dinger i'm back in the game. NICK KRALL EVERY PLAY, BECAUSE UNLESS yu've competed you dont realize and alot of people just do what others team do, you don't win 90% of yu're game at elite level fighting nose to nose every fight.

  3. 1 team design for the ballpark billypark was because of huge park, 2, without homeruns you're hope is to be in middle of pack that' 500 and no chance of consistanty or long win streakes but, again lets focus on what it doesn't to pitchers. I DON'T have any fear of reds lineup I mean done, Reds don't even have one guy I pitch around or a guy like a judge don't let that guy beat you. REDS pitcher starter they have to be perfect, really, because yep i'm in moment one pitch at a time. But it's playoff baseball with our offense one mistake can lose me the game my offense doesn't have my back. This is in your head because we all want to win we know what we have on offense. YOU are doing a disservice of pitcher. HUNTER GREENE ON YANKS OR DODGERS WIN 20, LODOLO 20 ABBOT 20 SINGER 15 MARTINEZ 15, plus think of what that confidence does for their career and bank account. WINNING gets in the brain, and pitching is confidence.

  4. SO, PART TWO IF YOU'RE A REDS PITCHER every game is playoff you can lose on one pitch not alot of room for error. So we use the term high leverage the stress of do that on pitcher not all innings are the same. At gabp their's a runner in scoring position in the batters box, isn't that tuff enough for the pitcher then to no have counter in the dugout to hit you one. ALL INNINGS ARE HIGH LEVERAGE.

  5. PART THREE ALL INNINGS ARE HIGH leverage because we never have a save lead we never have a laugher, How many games can hunter just have 5 run lead and just flat out go after one guy at a time. Rare, he has to think, he has talent with 5 run lead the other team is thinking weren't losing they aren't their best they have to play a different game and they have to think shit hunter greene with 5 run lead in the 7 inning, lets pack it in boys get em tomorrow, that matter. I played and we played to beat you in 5 innings, you're playing a marine team at fort bragg it's like rome. I didn't learn to coast I learned to kill and end it. I don't ever remember having a walkoff against us or me. we played 150 a year but we played for pride and that means more than money.

  6. PART FOUR we never knock anyone out question do you every feel reds have safe lead, no you don't because that thought oh, like couple years back reds had 6 guys that hit 30 homers. You know we can run away we try to box and win on point not a knock out there a word for the boxer, a grocery store clerk.

  7. PART FIVE WE RARELY COME BACK and that's in your head hitting, you have to hit a five run single not homer ahhahhahahah, THIS is just stupid it's admitting defeat before you play a game, owner if he stays we have no chance $ money matters, you may not have the trophy but you get to the dance every damn year. I ASK you redsfans what is the dodgers yank phil mets thinking to win it all, what's ours making the playoff being 12 our of 30 teams thats like a C grade wow, maybe we'll get lucking in short series. FOLKS WITH OWNERS THAT NEED THE MONEY AND KRALL THAT tried to win with smoke and mirror and three single vs a team that needs on swing to get the same run. We need a pitcher to make 3 mistake in a row before we make three out, other guys you make three mistake it could be 7 runs, (couple walks and error) We are playing to not win, we're playing to make the owner money. But this years betting on inside staight you did the opposite of what we needed to do to win. tito ball worked in titoville guardians stadium in weak division he won in red sox land with bomber in small ball park hmmm like gabp with tito a dinger team.

  8. SO POINT IS NO OFFENSE MAKES the next domino fall to much pressue on the young hitters which are asked to do something that can't be done in gabp, and no offense in gabp makes ever pitch the playoff game and losing you the whole game, it's one roll of the dice for hunter with game on line. WITHOUT NEW OWNER i'M HUNTER, I have a soft fart i'm going on il I'm not wasting my career with reds abbot lodolo the young kids no future, those guys are two's on world series team and in hunt every year. F the reds no owner no future. Hunter could be hall of famer abbot all star every year I see him as tommie glavine or better tom browning and tom was tuff. get rid of krall spend money or next year is the reds last i'm shopping teams. the reality is money matter quit blow smoke up my ass I don't have to many next years. Card fans two bad years they quit this is new world and people are done witht the rich billionaire and poor pirates and reds
