Tyler Seguin On How The Dallas Stars Can WIN The Stanley Cup
So, what’s up? How’s the new coach? You like him? I like him. Yeah, seems great. Yeah. No, good day uh good day one. Um as expected, you know, some new terminology and uh you know, trying to follow that and new drills, which is always refreshing, especially uh for me being at this for a long time. Um you know, you get those uh butterflies in the first few drills trying to lead the way and remember them. You know, that’s the fun part of day one of training camp and with uh new faces. So, uh successful day for sure. As you guys go through three Western Conference Finals and try and take the next step, how hard is it? How is it to get that 1% that Ken talks about? Yeah. Um you know, if it was easier, you probably figured it out a couple times ago. So, it’s uh it’s not easy. And uh obviously, he’s bringing things from the team that’s beat us the last two times. So, um, you know, I think everyone in this locker room’s, you know, open for new ideas, um, new terminology, trying to figure out what we could fix without, uh, you know, losing what we are. So, um, I know he talks about the 1% a lot and, uh, you know, you can see on day one. Glenn’s talked a lot about wanting the group to be more physical. Is that something that’s being embraced by the players? For sure, especially, uh, depending who you ask. Um, no, but I think there’s little details in being physical. Uh, you know, finishing plays and finishing checks. Um, you know, I’m one guy too that, you know, sometimes I’m not going to run on my way to to finish a guy. And, uh, just different views of what to do on a shift and, uh, you know, totally open to trying new things to see what what helps and what gets over that hump. Of all the people, you seem to have embraced it over the last however many years. Is that something that anyone can do? Cuz you you were high skilled player, did different things and then as the injuries came, it seems like you, you know, you were really good at killing penalties now or battling for pucks, things that you maybe didn’t do 8 years ago. Yeah, but I’ll be honest. I mean, it wasn’t just an easy switch overnight, right? Like it takes time. Um, takes months or even a year of there’s different things, right? There’s embracing different ways to play the game. is embracing your ego, you know, is embracing not being on a top line or a top power player, whatever it may be, whoever you are. Um, it’s embracing that a a good hockey team is taking pride in playing 15 minutes or 12 or hopefully 17, you know, uh, you know, playing those minutes but being effective. Um, because the good teams are, you know, four line teams. I mean, the two teams in the finals every year, you can say what you want about, you know, Edmonson with Connor and Leon, but they’re a deep team still. Um, Florida’s a whole different beast. So, you know, we’re trying to figure out what what we’re going to be, what’s our mix of those things. We have the, you know, high-end top players, but we have a little more depth, too. So, put those pieces together with uh some new faces and some simple things with new drills and uh see where we go. For yourself personally, you’ve had some challenges with healthwise. So, how does how do you kind of pair together being physical on the ice, but then being able to maintain your health throughout the whole season? Um, you try to I mean, I feel like anytime in the past when you’re thinking about injuries is kind of when they happen, um, I think that’s what I would tell any kid too who’s worried about something like that is when you start thinking about that stuff, it’s it’s when it happens. Usually, you got to go out and play your game and, um, just do what it takes to help your line win that shift, help you win that shift. and win the game. Speaking of your line, a little weird to not have Mason Marchman here this year. It’s different for sure. Um, you know, I haven’t thought much about lines, not my job long time till uh, you know, opening night, but uh, you know, there’s different guys over your career and journey that, you know, sting a bit more. And, you know, Mason was one of those for me for sure. Um, you know, but it’s part of the business. You know, it’s I’ve gone through this many times with players or, you know, coaches, you know, love Pete and Spotter and those guys and Meech and um you need change. It’s a cap world and uh you know, whoever’s in the locker room starting day one and that’s your group and you know, see how far we can take this. Jim talked yesterday about uh Ma and how or Mo and how a lot of his leadership I’m going to tell him that. Yeah. Yeah. It’s an accident. Tough start day one. Everyone’s going to tweet it right now, too. All over you. Oh, you’re going to be saying subscribe. Come on. Oh, good. Uh, how have you seen uh Mo Ranton’s leadership behind the scenes? Maybe in some ways. Well, he’s our translator, right? All the other guys packing fins and he, you know, gives it to No, he’s uh I mean, there’s a you get to see guys like that some a few times in your career. not often, but you get to see now behind behind the doors of, you know, what he’s like and how hard he works and what he can do in the gym. Um, it just really is work ethic. You know, he’s a leader and all those things. If you’re a kid, just kind of watch me go throughout his 6 hours at the rink and, you know, you see why he’s 100 plus point player pretty much every year. How much difference do you think it makes? I mean, he obviously was with three different teams last year. He got a chance with you last year, but how much for a start with him? Yeah. knowing he’s going to be here for a while. How much of a difference is that going to make for him? For him, we’re going to have to ask him, but I think a pretty, you know, big thing. I know he had a great off season. Um, you know, I know he’s excited. He’s excited to be here for day one. Um, you know, I get to sit with him every day now, so I got a new stallmate. So, uh, you know, love picking his brain and he’s just a he’s a happy guy and then when puck drops, he’s kind of a whole new guy. So, um, he brings a lot to our team. You talk about the depth. Obviously, this roster has been this way the last couple years. You got young guys, you got middle road guys, you got guys. Talk about how that’s kind of worked for you guys. It’s worked just because um you know, you got to give your hats off to what they do up there, right? You know, there’s supposed to be more of a trans transition period and we we haven’t really had that. We’ve stayed competitive every year and that’s uh as a player that’s exciting. You know, we get to have the opportunity every year. That’s all you want. Um but we really do have the layers of, you know, the real old guys and then older guys like me, you know, and then you keep going down and then you got the Rupes and then you got the, you know, Wyatts and uh now Borkis and Niels. So, um just being able to bring that in different layers. Um, you know, makes for the vets makes for a great rookie party every year, rookie dinner. Um, you know, and there’s always new faces. So, we have a family in here. Um, it’s nice to see everyone comfortable every year and, uh, you know, we have fun. That’s why we’re good. You going to tell Jamie that you called him a real old guy? He’s got a couple years. I think I’m third or fourth now. So yeah, he’s I’m the second tier. He’s one. So if you’re talking about a real old guy, it might be him. Okay, that’s fine. That’s fine. What you got to do? That’s okay. I see a little gray coming in there. Oh, it’s there. It’s there. I wanted you can ride. I almost went and cut my hair pretty short last week. Wife wanted me to, but I got worried about the grays. So I’m like, I know they’re underneath, right? That’ll happen overnight one day. But what was your reaction when you found out Radic Fox was coming back? Yeah, excited. Um, you know, I think he’s kind of maybe a one guy that we’ve been missing at times. You know, you probably would have loved the facts that last year at different times. Um, so great to have him back. Um, definitely not it’s it’s pretty much like he was just here. So, not too many new things going on there. At the start of training camp, we always get the line greatest shape of my life. Running joke in the NHL. Um, like the player says that. Yeah, player say that. Um my life third and third year in a row he’s top. So what’s it like watching watching him do that? Yeah, it’s I watch him on the bike all the time and try to figure it out and can’t. You know, there’s something uh with the youths of that. So, uh no, good for him. I mean, the thing about that is, uh you say what you want about training camp testing or the bike test or whatever we do. Um you you do it once, great. You do it twice, great. you get injured, you missed all that time. I mean, there’s something there to be to be proud of to do it a third time. So, going to him.
