Looks like Worthy may be back this week and when Rice comes back he's our #1, but is there any chance Tyquan Thornton can break out as more than just a deep threat? I found this site that breaks down snap counts and routes run for every game and Tyquan has been up there with both Kelce and Hollywood in both weeks, particularly last week. I've always thought of him as just a blazing deep target, but when Worthy and Rice are back, could he serve as a legitimate volume guy too?

  1. Considering he was cut by the patriots, probably not. But he’s good enough for what he’s there for. Him being a legit volume guy isn’t the expectation so I’m fine if he’s not.

But, I have been Tyquan Thornton Stan forever and always (since college) so… I hope he can be.

  2. They think He’s better than Juju by the snap count. He can be elite downfield… i can see him developing some intermediate comeback and dig routes he can use off the go route. I don’t see him being good at a full route tree as he hasn’t shown much talent in the slot or quick game

  3. I think he won’t get volume when Rice and Worthy are back.

I do think there’s a scenario the team likes his fit more than Hollywood’s next to Rice and Worthy. He is faster than Hollywood and has shown ability to win on go balls and beat press.

I think him and Hollywood will split the WR3 role after the two top WRs are back

  4. I think he is WR3 when he comes back. He has more burst and ability to separate than JuJu. I’m not sure what Royals can do yet tbh but he may fill this role too, idk. I think he could open up the deep ball if we keep Rice in that true slot WR position and have him work underneath, especially if it’s CB1 v Rashee and CB v X. Tyquan beats most teams CB3 in my opinion. I think he could be a sneaky deep ball threat, similar to Rashee Shaheed in NO with Derek Carr.

  5. Definitely a chance. There have been situations where a player didn’t work out in one place but caught on somewhere else and took off, though it is rare. Chris Carter the greatest example (though I believe his time with the Eagles was marred my drug use).

Joe Horn is another good example. Didn’t do much here in KC and then exploded in NOLA.

Thornton has also battled injury issues. Apparently Belichick vouched for him to Reid last year. If he can stay healthy and continue to prove himself it’s possible he can resurrect his career. A 30-40 catch season with around 500 yards and 4-5 TDs is probably his ceiling but that would be huge for this offense.

  6. Royals has a bigger chance of developing into a volume guy than Thornton does. Thornton is a MVS type. Run a lot of cardio and get thrown to a few times deep. Patriots tried to use him similar to how we used Worthy last year, and it just didn’t work.

Royals has both Rashee Rice type YAC potential *plus* deep speed. It’s just not going to happen right away. If his knee is good to go, he can help absorb the some of Rashee Rice targets along with JJSS.

  7. I’ve seen more out of him than most of our other receivers.  What we’re missing besides a running back is a reliable volume receiver.  That’s rice when he’s healthy and not stupid

  8. That is his best role. Him playing the Watson/MVS sacrificial X role is the best case scenario for his skill set. He is young and should be affordable as well to keep around if he keeps clicking on these deep balls.
