So on tonight’s show, we’re going to talk about the Mariners that they won. So, of course, the Astros are now tied once again for the AL West. That’s not a bad thing. That means the Astros do control their own destiny. If they win, then they gain the advantage over the Mariners. If they lose, then they lose that advantage. So, we’re going to talk about what the Astros how important this series is to both teams. and nine games to go. What What can the Astros do do? Not just to win the AOS, but can they even sneak in to possibly get that number two seed in the American League? It’ll be tough, but there’s enough games for the Astros do it. And Esacho Bradies, is there a chance? Are you telling me there’s a chance that he could be coming back? So, these are some of the topics we’ll be talking and we’ll be previewing the Mariners series. So guys, what exciting series against the Rangers and the biggest thing that the difference is is that what Brett’s been pre preaching about for a long time is the Astros were more patient. You saw that yesterday versus Deg Grom is they took a lot more pitches. You saw Jeremy Pena took a lot more pitches and in the first inning they made Deg Grom throw 35 pitches. If they continue this, it if they continue making the opposing pitchers throw more pitches, that’s going to help the Astros win a lot more games, not just in the regular season, but um assuming they get to playoffs, it’s going to help them because the offense has been a big issue throughout the whole season, especially with consistency. But if they figure out a way to wait for their pitch, instead of just being, oh, I want to swing at the first pitch, take a first pitch. And that’s what Jeremy Pena did in yesterday’s game. He took that slider away and instead of swinging and missing like he did three weeks ago whenever the last time they faced Deg Grom, he actually um had a pitch that the center fielder probably should have caught, but he didn’t. But he ended up scoring. And the Astros are doing something that they also have not been doing recently in the past month or so. They’ve been scoring runs early in the contest. And the Astros are dead like that. I think there’s like three teams that the Astros are around in the uh least amount of runs scored in the first or couple innings. So the what the Astros were doing against the Rangers. If they continue what they’re doing against the Mariners, likely you’re going to see the Astros win at least two of those three games. And if you win two of those three games, then you’ll at least uh leave M Dyken Park with a game advantage because the you would be up to then lose one game. So you at least have something there. But the Astros control their destiny. The Mariners did win today. Unfortunately, uh you can’t control what the Mariners do. The only thing you can control is what you do versus the Mariners. And so now the Mariners are coming down. The Astros have had a day off. they’ve had a time to recoup their uh bullpen and I know Brian Abrau was used a lot in that last series, not in yesterday’s game. Brian King came in and did a great job, but the Astros just need to come in and like they’ve been doing, play with the same intensity, take some pitches. Um the starting pitchers need to uh just do like they’ve been doing, limiting the damage early. And guys, I hate to break it to you, but this is going to be a playoff series. Have you seen the pitching matchups? This is like I don’t think the Astros planned this, but the I don’t know if the Mariners plan this, but it just happened to happen where you have both teams, best three pitchers, pitching in this series. This is going to be a playofflike atmosphere. So, if you get a chance to get out to Dyken Park this weekend, do it. I mean, it’s going to be exciting. It’s going to be thrilling. There’s going to be a lot of uh great baseball being played. It may be a pitching series, but if the Astros are doing what they’ve been doing recently, who knows what happens, but the Mariners are a good team. So, the Astros don’t need to win the AL West. You would like to win AL West, but they don’t have to. They could go ahead and win AL West and go for second place in the AL total, but you can only just go one game at a time. Let’s just say what Joe Spatus says all time. But on Friday, it’s going to be Brandon Woo versus Hunter Brown. Uh Woo is 14-7 with a 3.02 ERA on the season. Hunter Brown is 12-7 with a 2.27 RA on the season. So, this is going to be a probably one of the better pitching matchups. If you look at Saturday’s game, it’s going to be George Kirby versus Romero Valdez. Both of the pitchers have not had a as great of a season as a lot of people expected. Kirby is 9 and seven with a 4.46 RA. From Valdez, yeah, Brian, I don’t know why I said Brandon, but it’s Brian. Thank you, Ghost Ro. But, uh, Farmer Valdez is, uh, 12 and 10 with a 3.59 RA on the season. So, I know Farmer Valdez has been awful in the past couple months. Ever since, um, the trade deadline, it seems like he’s just hasn’t been the same pitcher, but they he needs to step up. And I know that there’s a lot of talk, well, if he sucks the last two the next two games, I think that Jason Alexander could be the number two guy in the playoffs. But, um, I think that’s saying something. And a pitcher as emotional as Valdez, he’s going to have to pitch at some point. I think everybody knows that Hunter Brown is the ace, but if you go ahead and demote Braar Valdez down to number three over somebody like Jason Alexander when Bramer Valdez does pitch, this is going to be an issue. Uh, yes, I do miss Brandon Walter. There’s a whole bunch of pitchers I wish the Astros had instead of the guys they have, but they’ve been pitching better. Christian Javier looked a lot better yesterday and it’s I’m getting a little glimpse of hope. The last show I did with um Trevor, I mentioned that um I’m glad that the Mariners went on that winning streak because they won what 10 or 11 games in a row. Great. I’m glad that they got all the winning out of their way. Yes, they won today, but the Astros have been just as hot and they only lost that one game, I believe that Sunday night, but otherwise they’ve been playing much better baseball since that that Braves game. So, if they continue playing good baseball, they could um find themselves in a not in not just an AL West, but in the number two seed in the playoffs. But they control their own destiny. That’s why I’ve been saying they can’t be scoreboard watching. It doesn’t matter what the Rangers do at this point. They’re gonna have to sweep the rest of the games to not really, but to basically catch up to the Astros. But the Astros just got to play good baseball. And also Logan Gilbert versus Jason Alexander on Sunday. It’s going to be a night game. So, this is going to be a nationally televised game. So, everybody across the nation is gonna be like, “Who is Jason Alexander? Is this the guy from Seinfeld? You’re going to be seeing that all across um X and all the social media platforms because people don’t know who Jason Alexander is, but this is going to be one of the best series you’re going to see all season. And the winner of this is not only going to get um I’m not going to say they’re going to get the AL West, they’re going to get the edge up to win the AL um West, but also they’re going to get the tiebreaker at this point with nine games left. The tiebreaker is a big thing because they’re both uh five and five right now. And so if um the team that wins the uh two games, that will be free games that they’ll have the edge there. So all you can do is just go out there and play Astros baseball, which apparently this is a new development is being patient and not swinging at a lot of extra pitches. I w wonder why they’re just now doing this. So guys, we’ll go ahead and continue this discussion. Thank you for making Lockdown Astros podcast your first listen every day. Go and subscribe to us. Going to make us first listen. Apple Odyssey, Spotify, wherever you listen your podcast, go and check us out. That’s zipix.com. Promo code locked on. Zip more smoke less with Zipix Toothpick. Well, I really hope the Astros are smoking the Texas Oh, not the Texas Rangers. They already did. But I really hope the Astros smoke the Mariners this weekend and take care of business because the Astros need to go ahead and not necessarily secure the AL West. They can’t do that this weekend, but what they can do is get the advantage by get that threeame two game what or I guess they can’t get a twoame lead. It’s either going to be a three-game lead or a oneame lead or a oneame disadvantage or a three-game disadvantage. That’s basically what’s going to happen in the situation. If you get swept, you’re going to be down three games in the ALS. So, it’s very critical that the Astros go out and play good baseball. You got nine games left. You don’t have time to be cute and uh funny. You got to go out there and do like they did versus the Rangers. Be patient at the plate. Wait for your pitch. Play good defense. Capitalize on errors. And pitch good. I know the bullpin was not as effective at times, but other relievers picked them up. Brian Keane did a great job of acting as closer yesterday. So, when the next man needs to step up, and that’s what we’ve been seeing a lot recently. When somebody struggles, Deos Santos struggles, Brian Abrau comes in, gives up a couple runs on Deos Santos card, but gets the job done. The Astros still get the victory. So, we’ll have to see what happens. I can’t predict the future, but I’d say the Astros can’t do they cannot leave Dyken Park without at least getting two wins and having that one game advantage over the Mariners. And that would make me feel really happy, really satisfied. I know we’re all cheering that the Astros had that halfame lead yesterday. a half game doesn’t matter because like we saw they lost that today when the Mariners won. So I know that Cal Cal Rally is just going out there and uh destroying baseballs left and right. He’s got 56 home runs. He’s batting .247 944 OBS. He has 14 stolen bases. There’s argument that he should be MVP this year with what he’s doing. has 118 RBI’s, but this dude is just destroying baseballs left or right. Limit his damage. If you can control Cal Rowley, you can control the Mariners’s offense. But they don’t just rely on him. Julio Rodriguez has 30 home runs. Randy Rose Arena has 27 home runs. Jorge Palanco has 24. JP Crawford has 11. So, if you’re looking at the Astros, their numbers are a little bit different. You have Jose Altuve with 26, Christian Walker with 23. Then you have two people tied for third, Yiner Diaz and somebody that hasn’t played in a while, Isach Bradies with 19. Jeremy Pena has 16. Victor Keratini has 11. and Cam Smith is one home run away from joining the um multi home run club at with nine home runs. So the Astros have not been winning with the home run ball this year. Yes, they have the big clutch home runs when they need it. Pina and Altuve had big home runs the other day, but otherwise they’ve just been struggling. And I got the hat at at Macy’s. I’m sure you can get it elsewhere. It was a Lids um little kiosk at Macy’s. That’s where I got this hat, but I’m sure you can find it at Lids or anywhere else. Um, I know that Enchanted Bro Culture was asking about that, but you got to go out there and just be consistent and just play better baseball because if the Astros continue being hot at this point of season, unlike what the Mariners did, you could go ahead and roll this into the playoffs, especially if you have to play a stupid twoame wild card or no, I keep on saying two game because I think about last year when the Astros got booted. by the Tigers in two games, but it’s actually a three-game wild card series. So, uh, but in three game wild card series, you can actually have that momentum following you. I know momentum really changes from game to game, series to series, but I really think that if the Astros maintain their approach, the patient, they’re taking pitches, they’re making their the pitcher uh work a little bit more, I think you’re going to see more of the offense that we’ve been seeing the past six games versus the offense that we saw the previous 10 to 12 games where they’re having trouble scoring and just not doing much. So, um, definitely a lot of situations are going to come up this weekend where you’re going to have runners in scoring position. I know that Christian Walker is batting down in line. You have Yiner Diaz batting lower in the lineup. Don’t move them up. Joe Espada, I know you’d be super tempted to move them up, but keep them where they are. The team is rolling. I know that he likes to juggle the lineup a little bit. just keep that’s fine because the Astros are still winning with him doing that, but um keep those guys at the bottom of the lineup. So, let’s go ahead before we look at the pitchers a little bit more. We’ll go and look up the matchups a little bit uh later. Then we’ll talk about Each Bradies, let’s take a second to look at the standings. So, the Blue Jays are 89 and 64. They have technically not clinched the playoffs yet. I think their magic number is um getting smaller and smaller, but uh they’ve pretty much secured the number one seed for the most part. Not mathematically, but I don’t think anybody can catch them at this point. The Blue Jays will basically have to lose a whole bunch of games, and they’re seven and three in their last 10 games. So, I don’t think the Astros are going to be able to catch Blue Jays. They are five games behind them. So, let’s go and look at the two seed right now. The Tigers were in the two seed, but they’re three and seven in their last 10 games. They’re on a three-game losing streak. So, the Tigers are now in third place if you believe it or not. The Yankees have now surpassed them. So, the Yankees are technically in the two seed, but it doesn’t really matter because I don’t think you can have the second seed in the same division. So, um the Tigers are technically still in the second seed. I just thought about that as I’ve been saying that. So, um, the Tigers are still the second seed because, um, it they look at it by divisions. So, you are one game behind the Tigers right now. So, you can totally catch that. Okay. So, forget about the Yankees. The Yankees are um they’re going to be a wild card team, especially if they can’t catch up to the thing. So, uh, yeah, the Guardians are three and a half games behind the Tigers. Yeah. So the Guardians are on a uh basically they’re nine and one. They’re on a sevengame winning streak. So they are what only two and a half games behind the Astros at this point. So nothing’s out of the realm of possibility. The Guardians could catch the Astros if they continue winning like they’re doing. So but all the Astros can do is win. They’re only one game out of the two seed because the two seed can only be a division winner. It can’t be a wildcard team. So that’s uh something to keep in mind. So the Yankees technically are the two seed, but um not really. They’re really more of a three or four seed or something like that. So the division winners would be So the Astros and the Mariners are technically three seed at this point. So you’ve got to go ahead and win. And don’t worry about what the Yankees are doing. They don’t they matter as a I maybe you want to try to catch them to have a better wild card um slotting but focus on the Tigers, focus on winning and just focus on the Mariners because it’ll be cool to win another ALS. They’ve done five straight. I believe it was like six out of the last eight or something like that. But the Astros just got to keep the the good times rolling and um that’s through the AL West I think. But um guys, we’ll go and continue this discussion. We’ll talk about Esau Prades. Is he really coming back? Do you really buy that? We’ll go and talk about this and more on the Lockdown Astros podcast next. Hey guys, do you know where all your money is? Uh, so we’re trying to get to 16,000 subscribers and we can’t do it without you telling uh people about us. Go ahead and mention that. I know I’m working a refinery now and uh at one unit the other day I was doing some sampling and uh in the morning um somebody thought they recognized me. Then in afternoon they were they said they were talking about hey you’re the Astros guy. And so then when I said, “Yeah, I have a podcast.” Then they started asking me all these Astros questions because everybody wants to know about the Astros right now. What’s going on in Farmer Valdez? Is um um so are these guys for real? Or what what are these guys going to do in the playoffs? So um is Cole um legit? Is he is that Cole going to be a legit star? We don’t know. Uh but that’s what makes this exciting. and Zack Cole while I’m talking about it. He is going to be facing some tough pitching in this series. So, um, props to Joe Bada because, um, I think the Rangers brought out their best pitching to face the Astros. The Mariners are bringing out their best pitching. So, Zack Cole is is being thrown into the fire into the playoff matchups. And so, you got to love the fact that he’s succeeding. He’s making these great plays and he’s forcing the manager’s hand. Yes, I know that Alvarez’s injury that has helped him get some more playing time, but I think that they brought him here to be that spark plug. And it feels like ever since he was brought up, it was the um the offense has been a lot better. They’ve been a little bit more energized and you’ve just seen a whole different team. And I like I keep on saying it, I think it’s going to be the Evan Grant experience that the Rangers experience and and that season when they went to win the World Series. Um if anybody watched that season, um I think a few people did, but um let’s go and talk about Eso Brady’s. Um is there a chance that he comes back this weekend? Well, I know that um that Dana Brown said, “I think we’re talking about Prades coming back this weekend. there’s an outside chance. And so I know Brian Tagert was on Sports Talk 790 said he said I think there’s a pretty good chance in the next few days we see Brady’s in the Astros lineup, but he said about Alvarez um it’s probably going to be a little bit before we see him um in the lineup. He he’s talking about deeper into playoffs. So, if the Astros have to play a wild card series, don’t expect Alvarez to be in the lineup. Maybe even a division series or a championship series before you even see Alvarez in the lineup. So, um this is a big loss for the Houston Astros, but if Parades is coming back, this will be a instant um I don’t want to say replacing Alvarez because Alvarez is left-handed. He’s got that power. He’s was red-hot when he went down, but at the same time, you need somebody another impact bat. And don’t expect Prades to come back like being the road runner or and um out out running the Coyote all of a sudden. Uh he’s probably not going to be running 100%. And Joe Pada says, “I don’t want him to if he comes back. We just want him to take it easy running to base. we want him to make it to first base, but um they don’t want him to overexert himself because that he dealt with a very severe uh hamstring issue. So, the fact that he delayed surgery to go ahead and have a chance to come back in fact that he’s been uh he’s had I believe he’s had 14 at bats in Florida and he’s been looking pretty good. Everything looks re really good. Joe P says I think he’s uh where he’s at right now. We’re in a position where we feel good about it being sooner rather than later. I think the next day or two will determine uh when Freddy’s will be activated. Um so it help overcome the loss of Alvarez and who’s going to be out for a while and that’s all we’ve really heard. Uh the Astros haven’t put a a firm timetable on how long he’s been out, but uh he’s gotten over 14 at bats and we don’t h know how many days left. So we just feel good about that. He just said we feel good about how many bats he’s had, how many how much time he’s had, and he’s bouncing back. The biggest thing is the fact that he’s bouncing back. He’s going through the reps. So the question is where does he play? He plays um DH very simple. You don’t want him diving and learning a new position at second base. Kareah is going to be playing third base. He came here to play third base. You’re not going to say, “Hey, Kareah Paradis is coming back. I know you just learned this new position third base. Can you go ahead and move over to second base now?” And they’re not going to have say Alive, go ahead and move to left field. They’re going to go ahead and you have opening at DH. They’re gonna put Brad Parades out there. They’re gonna He’s probably not gonna play every day. They may have him play two games off for a game. I know there’s not that many games left in his season at this point, but they’ll probably do something like that. That way he’s um rested and he’s not that bad. But um the Astros are in a situation where they desperately need the the bat. But with the way they’ve been playing, everybody has been picking each other up and they’ve been playing with a a better consistency and everything like that. So, um the main thing Joe B said he’s checked off all the boxes and we’re just not going to make him go full effort running around the bases. And that’s probably all the all the effort they’re going to have him do is just hit and run. Um he’s not going to be lugging out a double, a triple, or um they’re not going to do like what they did, what happened the other day with Alvarez and try to score. They’re going to be very careful about that situation. They’re not going to have them try to score second to home. Uh but I think if it was a playoff game, it may be different situation, but in the regular season, they’re going to be very cautious with him if he comes back. So my question to y’all listeners, when do you think he’s going to come back? Do you think he’ll be back tomorrow? Do you think it’ll be Saturday, Sunday? You think he even comes back during the Mariner series? Do you think they wait till they face the um A’s and the Angels? What do you think? I think as big as this series is, they’re going to bring them back. So, who knows? I’m excited about what we’re seeing. It’s not just the fact that the Astros have won five out of their last six games, but it’s how they’re winning these games. They’re winning it with good pitching. They’re winning it with good offense, consistent offense. And uh even that one game they lost, they they scored three runs. Uh unfortunately, Valdez imploded in that game. Um, I think that was 83 loss, but overall their games have been a lot more exciting to watch. So, we’ll have to see overall what happens. But, um, the Astros, the ball’s in their court. They they can either be like Shaquille O’Neal and try to make some free throws or they could be out there like somebody that can score 80% of the time from the free throw line. So, what are they going to do? Are they gonna try to win 80% of the remaining games? They have the potential to do that. They are playing the teams that they should be able to get some wins against. They have their best pitchers on the mouth. And yes, I’m still listing Farmer Valdez for now in that list. I know he’s disappointed for the last what 10 starts, but I’m still going to put that good juju out there because we need him. We need him in the playoffs. The Astros are not going to go deep into the playoffs unless Valdez is good former Valdez and you just got to play good defense around him and hope he doesn’t crater. So, uh, Brett will be back on Sunday. I know he he came back yesterday for one day, but, uh, we’ll be hopefully we’ll be talking about the Astros victory. Uh, I’ll be doing some shorts over the weekend about all the good news. If Esacho Prades is coming back, I’ll do a short show. But otherwise, guys, let’s enjoy this show. Let’s enjoy everything. Yeah, let’s not hack a shack this weekend. Let’s go ahead and take care of business and get the job done because the Astros, they feel like they’re inevitable. They’re going to get the job done. It was ugly the past two or three weeks, but now it looks like they’re finally getting their groove on. And maybe maybe it’s just at the right time. Guys, thank you for making Lockdown Astros podcast your first listen every day, whether it’s on YouTube. Go ahead, subscribe to us. Go and make us first listen.
