I always heard Steelers are playing Tampa 2, and never really knew what was it. This video not just explains it, but also mentions coach Tomlin as one of the coaches that love it, and used to call a lot (and maybe still do).

  1. Oh yeah, and because Tomlin worked under Tony dungy for the Tampa bay buccaneers (hence Tampa 2) that is the system Tomlin is comfortable with. Also explains Patrick queen’s struggles; Tampa 2 demands a lot from the middle linebacker in order for the coverage to be effective.

It’s also at its best when the opponent is behind the sticks or 3rd and long situations, which is why we emphasize having excellent pass rushers. It’s actually pretty cool to understand Tampa 2 because it influences the way we draft and our defensive philosophy.

  2. Tampa 2 requires an extremely talented MLB who can for all intents and purposes be a db when needed

  3. I don’t think we run it a lot these days. As the name indicates it means that both safeties are playing over the top blanket coverage. Minkah was near the top of the league in deep middle snaps last year. Elliott was playing in or near the box a lot. The year before we had all those injuries and Minkah was playing in the box a ton.

Of course, maybe we run Tampa 2 like 25% of the time and the rest of the league is only running it 10%. So maybe we do run it more than most idk. It would be interesting to see the breakdown.

  4. For years now the Steelers have been near the bottom of the league in Cover 2. They run a lot more Cover 1 and Cover 3 with one safety deep and one more in the box.
