Pittsburgh Pirates vs Chicago Cubs – MLB 9/17/25 Full Game Highlights (MLB The Show 25 Sim)
Hello baseball fans and welcome. MLB the show has action out of the NL Central. It’s the Chicago Cubs going up against the Pittsburgh Pirates. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. So just about set and towing the slab, Mike Burroughs. What do we have on him? Well, that whip is just below the league average and that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him in this one today. And here’s the first baseman, Michael Bush. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs and takes low for ball one. 10. First pitch 1235. And another ball. [Music] Pitch misses out and it’s three and 0. Well, I would expect in this three 0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. There’s the strike. Three and one. Three and one. That one misses. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. So here’s her now. I’m liking what I’ve seen from him at the dish lately. Hitting better than 350 this month. One and0. Bush on at first. Nobody out. That one the other way. One down. Batting third, left fieldielder. Time now for the Chicago Cubs lineup and one of the most exciting young stars in the sport, Pete Crow Armstrong. And Boo, he’s their team leader in home runs. So, you know, the pitchers on that other side, man, they took a lot of time preparing for him in that pregame meeting. You know, he’s got a lot of pop and it’s real pop. It’s not fluky at all. He can absolutely change the outlook of a game very quickly. So watch out when he steps in. Ian had in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Man at first, one away. And that is out of play. Cubs made Ian Hap a first round pick in 2015. He played at the University of Cincinnati as an infielder. Played a little runner on the move. Yeah, that’s fouled off. And the swing is two gone. Not a great curveball there at all, but clearly he wasn’t looking for it because it just dropped right into the happy zone. And it looked like to me the swing was a little bit late. Tells me he gave up on it early and then just try to have that emergency hack at the last second to put it in play. Moises byos the next cub to hit. Let’s go. He had a foul ball. Pirates. And a ground ball to first. He takes it himself to the bag. And that’ll do it. One left for the Cubs. And now the Pirates will get their first opportunity. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here with my pal Singi and towing the slab, Javier Assad. Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. He’s been able to move his pitches around, add in some track, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. [Applause] And he drops it down the third baseline. Bare hand scoop. Nicely done for the Owl. Here’s a Pirates lineup now. someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Giwan Bay and one of the most versatile players. He can bat anywhere in that order and he can play anywhere on the field, not just the outfield, the infield as well. So, next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Spencer Horowitz. That one is upstairs. [Applause] knee high. That’s in for a strike. One out. Base is empty. Inside. Just missed. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. The next pitch misses. Full countdown. Swing and a little roller right side. Throws to first in time. Batting third designated hitter, Ryan Reynolds. Two down, base is empty. Brian Reynolds here in the corner for a strike. 0 and one. Right through there for a strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. We head to the second from PNC Park. No score. New inning getting started. Dansby Swanson stands in. Danby Swanson Burroughs back to work. Breaking ball inside and that is ball one inside. Missed our plate umpire Earl Hris. Yeah, with Hendrickx boo kind of interesting. He’s a good consistent umpire but you do hear that he kind of favors one side of the plate more than the other. So, it’s really hard to know for sure, but I think that usually it has to do something with where he sets up prior to each pitch. One away. Batting six, seven fielder Pete. So, now for Chicago, Pete Crow Armstrong. Chris, it’s been a good year for him, having already set a new career high for RBI’s in a season. [Music] And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Applause] [Music] They say you win. No balls, two strikes in the air to left center. Gonzalez in position and he makes the catch. Two away now. That’s a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch. We all know those can be a little tricky, especially if the wind swirling around out there. Two out, space is empty. This is Willie Castro. Popped up to the left into foul ground. Triolo makes the play and that is that. Nothing happening there for the Cubs. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. We head to the bottom of the second at the plate for Pittsburgh. Tommy Fan. Tommy Fam. Let’s go, Tom. First pitch misses. One ball, no strikes. Tommy, just missed. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. fast ball and he gets out of the way. Straighten him up a little bit. Inside and that’s ball four. And that’s their first base runner of the game. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. So up next, Nick Gonzalez, third baseman playing on the edge of the grass looking for the sack bunt. Ball one, no strikes. [Music] on the inside corner for a strike. Van gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Two-1 in the dirt. Blocked. [Music] Pirates. And a big swing and a miss. Two balls, two strikes. [Music] That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Ground ball could be two. There’s one over the first. Safe. Batting six, center fielder, O’Neal Cruz. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. He set a new career high at home runs this year. And Singi, he’s just trying to set the bar as high as possible. Now, first pitch doesn’t find the zone. This is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball’s got to be hit extremely hard right at them if they’re going to have a chance to go for a double play. That’s in there and the count one and one. Well, I’ll always remember how Cruz left his mark on Major League Baseball in his debut. Three innings into his first game, he had the hardest throw by any infielder in baseball, the hardest hit ball all season by a Pirate and the fastest sprint speed by a Pirate. This guy does it all. Next pitch is outside. Chris, with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, that one is absolutely bel. And it one hops the wall. Here comes Gonzalez. He’ll score. The Pirates take the lead. Not in time. He’s safe. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Here’s Joey Bark now. [Applause] Oh, he doesn’t get the call. One and0. 10. One away with a runner at third. Bottom half of inning number two. [Applause] On the ground to third. Shaw. whips it across there for the out. Runner scores from third. So important to really lock in on an at bat like this. It seems easy with the infield back, but you got to make sure you put the ball in play. Put it on the ground. Brought that in. Now here is Nick York. York. [Applause] Just missed. That’s outside. Ball. [Applause] Ball. Next pitch in for a strike. Now two and one. That clips a corner. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Two out. Space is empty. Cut on and miss. Curve ball struck him out. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. We head on now to the top of the third. It’s the Pirates two and the Cubs nothing. Back here at PNC Park, here’s Reese Maguire. This is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. [Music] Swing and a pop off in foul ground. brings it in and there’s one down. No, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there. And I’m telling you, he is going to be frustrated with himself until his next at bat. Matt Shaw, the next Cub to hit. Chicago, swinging a highfly ball out towards right field. He makes the grab. That’s out number two. Up next for the Cubs, first base Michael. So digging in, Michael Bush. He reached out a walk his first time. BCH hitting lead off in today’s game and they went out and made a trade for him last season. Fast for a strike at 95. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. [Applause] bows that off to the left and will do it again. Look out. That hit him. And it hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Second base. Here’s Nico her 0 for one so far. Chris, baseball today. So many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Two outs. Fought off foul. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. Next one is off the play now. Two balls in a strike. Sing. One of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. Swing and a ground ball out to short. Gonzalez now the throw to first on the run and very nicely done for the out. Cubs leave one. They trail things here two nothing. Set for the bottom of the third. Digging in, it’s the speedy outfielder Gwan Bay. The right-hander back to work. Ball high ball. Two up. Just missed. Three 0. Next offering is in for a strike. Right through there. Got him. That K is his third of the game. Now that is back to the top of the lineup. Up next for the Pirates, Jared Triolo. He’s 0 for one. Inside corner for a strike. 01. Next offering is fouled back. fans. Another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Backto back strikeouts to start the frame and that’s now three in a row. Yeah, he’s really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches, throwing them where he wants to right now. So, we’ll see how long he can keep this streak going. Horowitz stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Check swing. Did he go? No, he didn’t. Two balls, no strikes. Next offering is fouled back. And that one fouled off. This guy at the dish excels in two strike counts. Got to be careful with him out there on the mound. Make it four strikeouts in a row. Just cruising along. Nothing doing here for Pittsburgh, but they’re on top two nothing. Out of the fourth in half up to hit. left fielder. He’s got pop, which is a little sneaky because he’s so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field, but he can jump you if you make a mistake. That’s outside and that’s ball one. He’s been pitching well, but going through this middle of the order second time through, we’ll see what kind of adjustments are being made. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Everyone’s trying to elevate the ball in today’s game, but if you can hit a ball that hard on the ground, it’s going to find some holes. Moises bysteros the next come to hit 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time. Burrows checks over to first and he’s back. And that’s way high. Ball wad. 10. Hat aboard here at first with nobody out. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. One ball, one strike. [Applause] [Music] in the air pretty deep out to center field makes the catch and there’s one down. Up next for the Cubs shorts stop Danv Swanson. Swanson digs in fly to center his first time. Here we go. Turn two. up and in. And that’s ball one. 10 ball. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. In this situation, ahead 200, he’s put himself in a really good spot. [Music] hammers that one deep left field and forget it. And we are starting over. It’s 2-2. Wow, what a clutch swing right there. And now anything can happen in this game. Well, I’m sure there’s a big grin on his face right now. Boo. He’s probably had some of those that didn’t stay fair, but off the bat it looked like he was going to bend. Foul. Was able to keep it in there. Tucked it nicely and he gets the jog around the bases. Good for him. Cro Armstrong in the box now. No balls in a strike. [Applause] ripped on a line. Holds it in for the out. And there’s two down. Now batting right. Still two down now. And here is Willie Castro. Popped out and fouled ground. First time through [Applause] pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Base is empty, two away, but two runs are in. Top half of inning number four. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. Cubs add two on this homer. Two- two game. bottom four. Brian Reynolds designated hitter Brian Reynolds. Close but called a ball. Ball one. You know, these Pirates do a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count. And they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. Next offering in there for a strike and it’s two and one. And that’s too high. still relatively early, but with the pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. [Music] popped in the air left field half. Puts it away for the out. Now batting left fieldielder. Here’s Tommy Fam. worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. [Applause] Turned on but foul wide of third. The wind of the pitch right through there for a strike. All tied up. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Fouled off and he’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Way high. One ball, two strikes. Next offering way off the plate [Applause] [Music] [Applause] in the air right side and that’s a fair ball. Runner around at first with one gone. Nick Gonzalez digs in now. [Applause] Swing at a ball lifted to center field. He’s got it. And there are two outs. Now batting center fielder O’Neal Cruz. O’Neal Cruz the next pirate to hit. It was a triple and an RBI at his first at bat. and takes low for ball one. [Music] Two outs. Two outs in the dirt. Next offering is in for a strike. Fan off of first with two away. Outside Joey Bart in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. So now two on and two outs. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass. Joey, this is Joey Barton. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame wrap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. Movement in the Cubs bullpen. Andrew Kitridge up and throwing for manager Craig Council. Rogers also throwing [Music] [Applause] inside. Now two and0. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. [Applause] That clips the inside corner for a strike. Strike two. And there’s a real chance they get out of this without allowing a run. [Music] [Applause] puts it in the air out towards left center. Crow Armstrong should have it. That is the inning. Pirates strand a couple. Score remains 2-2. And we’re back. We go to the top of the fifth now. The Cubs catcher Reese Maguire Burrows back to work. He swings and hits a fly ball center field. Cruz takes it in for the out. And there’s one down now. Basement Matt Shaw. And here is Matt Shaw. Flyed to right his first time. In there for a strike at the top of the zone. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Next pitch is outside and it’s a ball to strike. And that one upstairs [Music] swing and a highf fly ball. Pretty well struck right field. That one’s back there onto the track and he makes the catch. Now batting the first baseman, Michael Bush. Back to the leadoff spot in the Cubs lineup. Here’s the Cubs leadoff man, Michael Bush. First offering and it just misses. And a foul ball. Two down. Nobody on. And now two balls on a strike. And that’s outside. Nico her waiting to hit for the Cubs. And it’s fouled away. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Two outs on the ground right side dives but it kicks off his glove. He beats the throw and he reaches safely. Now batting second base Nico her. Go ahead run on base. Next to hit Nico her for two in this one. The other way makes the play and it’s out number three. One hit one left. Last half of the fifth coming up. We are tied 2-2. [Applause] Now pitching for back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound. Andrew Kitridge. This guy’s a strikethrower. He’s done an excellent job of avoiding walks so far this season. And stepping in is the speedy Nick York. His first at bat was a strike out. York Pirates just off the inside edge. You know, these Pirates need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings. Just one extra base hit for them. So they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. H makes the catch and there’s one down. Now batting right. So next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Gwan Bay struck out looking his first time. Let’s go. swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field and a couple of quick outs. Up next for the Pirates third base. So the Pirates batting order turns over and now the Pirates leadoff man Jared Triolo. That one missing inside. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. Let’s go. Swinging a foul. Out of play. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Ripped to third but handled. And that’ll end the inning. Down in order go the Pirates. Score remains deadlocked at 2-2. Back here in Pittsburgh, digging in, Ian Hap. Hap measures 6 feet even, 205 lbs. a former first round pick back in 2015. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. You know, these Cubs, to put it bluntly, need to put together more competitive at bats, and I don’t think they’ve lived up to their own expectations at the plate. I think things are happening a little quicker than this offense would like, and we see it in the numbers. They’re hitting into a lot of outs early in the at bat. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] Struck him out. He says, “I don’t care about draft routes. Take a seat.” Well, he just had no answer for that hard inside fast right there. Just blew it by him. And not every pitcher likes working inside, especially with two strikes. They don’t want to hit a batter and waste an opportunity to put him away. But if you can locate that fast ball just like he did, most hitters aren’t looking for it and it becomes very difficult to get a piece of. Moises byos the next cub to hit and that finds the mark on the outside corner and one. He’s pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success but you can never predict baseball. [Music] the 01. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s got a chance. It bangs off the wall and he’s into second base with one away as the go ahead run. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. A chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run. manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Mike Burroughs out of the game and he was a tough nut to crack. Pretty stingy from start to finish. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching Paul gets the call from the pen. Definitely a guy that pounds the strike zone, makes hitters earn their way on base, and rarely gets in trouble because of free passes. And now it’s Dansby Swanson. He’s already homered in this game and fouled off. And that one fouled off. Next offering misses. Now one and two. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. [Applause] That one missed with the go ahead run standing at second and we’re in the top half of the six. Strikes him out with 101. He just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count off the two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. So the go-ahehead run and scoring. He gets the intentional walk here and now a force at any base with two gone. Now batting right Willie Castro. First and second, two outs. And now here is Willie Castro. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Here’s [Applause] a high-fly ball out to center. Cruz sizes this one up, squeezes it, and that’s the third out. So, a job well done from the Buckos bullpen. 234 two up in the home half of the six. We are tied 2-2. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now the number two hitter Spencer Horitzer Horiz. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And that one is inside. [Applause] [Music] Here’s a 200. And that one missing low. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. had a swing at a line drive into right field. F makes the grab. One down. Now batting the designated coming to the plate now. [Music] And the pitch is outside. Ball one. [Music] One down. Base is empty. The bit behind with that swing. Get strike one. One and one. Close but called the ball and it’s two and one. Two-1. [Music] Let’s go, kid. That’s down and in. All tied up here in the bottom of the six. Runs it up to 96 to record the punch out. And the batter now Tommy Fan walk and he’s also single. And there’s a foul ball [Music] right through there for a strike. Foul ball still 0 and two. That missed by a whole lot. Two balls, two strikes. Swing and a hard hit. Grounder to third. Can’t field it cleanly. Gets it there in time though. And they get it out on the play. Bucks go down quietly and this game is still tied at two and two. Back here at PNC Park and the batter now is Reese Maguire on the ground right side to first and they get the lead off hitter in the seventh. Now batting third baseman Matt Shaw. So up next, Matt Shaw. First pitch misses. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. line and a base hit into right around first. Digging for two. The throw to second is offline. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. Now a good opportunity to potentially jump ahead in this game here in the later innings. So the go-ahehead run is into scoring position. And now the first baseman, Michael Bush. This one popped up. Gonzalez brings it in and there are two down. Now batting second base Nico her. Nico her will come up to hit. As a pitcher, you know the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So, you really have to execute on the mound. Foul off down the right side. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. [Applause] Got it. Third out. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Now pitching. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Ben Brown coming on to face a righty here. and he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. And the batter will be the short stop, Nick Gonzalez. The shorts stop, Nick Gonzalez. That’s in there. And it’s 0 and one. Trying to keep good speed off the bases. out to short over to first. Great pick. Good stretch there to make the play. It looks like someone added a little yoga to their daily routine if you ask me. Cruz at the plate for Pittsburgh. O’Neal Cruz and ball one. [Applause] [Music] Now a high-fly ball out to left center. Crow Armstrong moves after it. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And that quickly two away. Hey man, four pitches, two outs. That is an excellent base. And now the catcher comes up to him. Joey Bart. Highf fly ball right field. Castro. He’s there. He’s got it. And that is that. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Number 47. He’s certainly been one of their better relief pitchers this season. The numbers are really solid, so they feel great about handing the ball over to him. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder in half. One for three. Well, both sides equally as strong. So, not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. And that’s in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Bullpen action for the Pirates. Dennis Santana, the closer is getting loose. Nicholas also getting ready. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] And that is out of play. Got him. Swinging for the K. tied him up on a fast ball inside. So, the bullpen doing a nice job backing up the effort from their starter. Yeah, we’ve seen some pretty excellent pitching out of this staff so far. I mean, they’ve come in ready to do their job and get outs. They’ve been pretty tough to get to in this one. Now, here is Moises Bayister. [Applause] And that’s in there for strike one. One down. Base is empty. Just miss. That’s a ball. One and one. Ball. Base is empty. one away and we’re in the top of the eighth. And that one fouled off. [Applause] Strike three and that’s two in a row. Very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. getting straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. These aren’t fun at bats if you’re a hitter. I’m so glad I’m retired. [Applause] And here comes Dansby Swanson. He’s already homered here in this one. Slashed foul down the right side. Then it’ll hook off into the seats. That’s inside. And it’s one and one. Come on. Let’s go. The shorts stop takes a ball. Two-1. Fouls. One off. Two and two. Punch him. Highfly ball out towards left field. Fam going back on this one. Lee Bing and it’s gone. Another homer. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. It’s 3-2. [Applause] No doubt in my mind, just about everybody in this ballpark holding their breath on that one, I tell you. Just barely snuck it inside the foul pole. And talk about a huge swing. That’s it in this ball game. Could be the biggest swing of this ball game. We’ll see. Pete Crow Armstrong the next Cub to hit and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well on the mound and this is a spot where he’s got to treat this as a clean inning. Forget about the home run. Forget about now being behind on the scoreboard. Start fresh and get those hitters back up to the plate as quickly as possible. Next offer is in for a strike. [Applause] and they’ll do it again. You can see is trying to stay back long enough to handle the offsp speed pitch but just a little tardy on the fast ball. [Applause] got him lifting and he’s registered three Ks in this one. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s now a 32 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Out of the bottom of the eighth at the plate for Pittsburgh, Nick York. Now, this guy, a player that if he gets on base, has the ability to really be aggressive getting around the base paths. Brown back to work. Just missed. Movement in the bullpen. Brad Keller, the closer of the staff, is getting loose to finish this one off. [Applause] Looking to get the tying run on base. One ball, one strike. and strike two. One, two. [Applause] Swinging a ground ball to Bill. That’s a base hit. And that puts the tying run on base. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t get in. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. No outs. Runner at first. Giwan Bay, the next pirate to hit. Late swing, fouled to the left. If you’re base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get in the scoring position. [Applause] bottom of the zone and a cold strike with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here. And one and two pitch that far out of the zone. Gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat. [Music] Next pitch downstairs. Two balls, two strikes. The count. [Music] [Applause] Got him looking and he didn’t like the call. Well, big strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout. Making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the play today. Up next for the Pirates, Jared Triolo 0 for three in this one. Rolled to short. Could be two. Off balance feed. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. Here comes the manager out of the Cubs dugout and he will make a move to the pad. Ben Brown gives way and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching for Taylor Rogers taking over on the mound. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. And now Spencer Horowitz. Little surprised we don’t see a pinch hitter here, but the lefty lefty matchup. Swinging a foul out of play. Two outs. [Applause] Tried to check his swing. Appeal to third and he went around. Just enough that time. [Applause] That’s off the mark. Going to count one and two. Holding on to a one-run lead here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. And he chases that one. That’s the inning. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. looks out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Kyle Nicholas, left-handed batter at the plate and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. Well, one-run game. Now it’s the switchhitting outfielder. Willie Castro [Applause] Nicholas, 26 years old, and he was a second round pick in 2020. Activity in Pittsburgh’s bullpen. Dowry Moretta preparing to come on if needed. Chandler getting cranked up as well. And that’s in for a strike. back door him with the breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. Next pitch is outside. Really good take especially with two strikes to the right side. York the throw to first and they get the leadoff man in the ninth. Now batting catcher Reese Maguire. Now the catcher up to hit Reese Maguire. first pitch and that’s in for a strike, man. 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a low end fast ball for some pitchers. One down. Base is empty. That’s inside. [Music] just missed ball outside. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. top of the zone for a cold strike. Countful. Goes down looking for the strike out. Went back to the fast and it was effective. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. Shaw in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. [Music] One-run game here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] Swinging and a miss. One and two. One and two. Now delivers outside and a foul ball. He stays alive. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Two down, nobody on here in the top of the ninth. line drive and that’s base hit out into left center field. So he gets a hit after a long battle with the pitcher. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that bat battling with two strikes. Good job getting the foot down so he could catch it out front and pull it. Turn on it nicely for the knock. Back to the top of the order now. And next for the Cubs, Michael Bush. And that misses and it’s one and0. Shaw leads off first with two down to the inning. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] That misses two and one. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. Here’s the pitch. Runner goes, strikes him out with a 100. One left for the Cubs and it remains a 3-2 ball game. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the ninth. To the plate now for Pittsburgh is the DH Ryan Reynolds. [Applause] Just no. That That’s the ball. 10. [Music] Slice hard but foul. One-run game. Bottom nine. Pitch misses. And that’s ball two. [Applause] Little chopper rolls. Foul. [Music] [Applause] Hson misses. It’s a strikeout. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Damn. He’s two outs away. Tommy Fan, the next pirate to hit. He’s been a great free agent side. [Applause] First pitch not close on the ground to short. Fires to first on the run on the money. Nice play. Couple of pitches and a quick out. Now batting the shorts stop Nick. So they’re down to their final out. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Nick Gonzalez corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. Fouled off. He was late. [Music] Y one. They’re down to their final strike. Oh, two. One strike away. Chop to third. Shaw. Throw to first. Ball game. And the Cubs hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Well, Summon from the bullpen had to come in, get a big out, and then had a little time to think about it before he went back out to get the final three outs of this ball game. Nonetheless, outstanding job to get the save and secure the win for his team. What the move?
