🔴LIVE 🔴Washington Nationals VS New York Mets/ September 19/ Baseball Envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25
first tread after this. So, just about set now and today’s starting pitcher, David Peterson. But Chris, he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I’ll say this. Every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark, in front of their fans, in front of the city. And you know, this guy no different. He wants to be more effective here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven’t been great at home. I’m sure he wants to turn that around. and we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one. James Wood, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. First pitch, 710. And another ball. He’s great hitting the ball the other way. And that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. And a fast ball misses outside for a ball. And that’s ball three upstairs. And that is ball four. And that’s how they get their first base runner of the game. That just came apart right there. Four pitch walk. And guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and one. Ruer takes off. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Everything came together for him. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. a nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Josh Bell at the plate now. That one ripped but foul. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. [Music] This one drilled right center field. That one heading for the fence and gone. That one’s got to feel good. It’s three nothing. He put a charge into that one. That was a lightning swing right there. No doubt about it. Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball, squared it up and the backspin carried it out of here. And stepping in the rookie left fielder Dalen Lyle. And that one is downstairs. And that’s ball one. Singi, maybe some nerves getting the best of him in the first. Well, it’s hard to know exactly if it’s nerves or not, but he just doesn’t have it right now. Those hitters on the other side, they’re going to say it’s nerves and use that as a competitive edge to try to jump on him even more. Can be tough to bounce back after a big home run, but nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. bows it off. Still one and two. And there’s a ball line drive and that should be extra bases around first and hustling for second. And that’s a double. That’s now three hits in a row for the offense. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. And now it’s Luis Garcia misses off the play. Ball one. Runner at second. Nobody out. Tap foul at the plate man at second. So a foul ball makes it one and two in the dirt but kept close to third. Tag got him. Well, you want to see guys aggressive out there on the base paths, but you also want to see them smart as well in making their decisions. And right there, you couldn’t really tell how far away that ball was. So, if that’s the case, you got to shut it down. He gets caught stealing there, takes himself out of scoring position and a foul ball. He stays alive. battling here as he fouls it away and he deals. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. Well, with this many pitches thrown here in this first inning, I mean, you’re giving the other team a really good look. He’s going to have to find a way to get some weak contact, maybe a swing and miss, get into that dugout and hit the reset button. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Now here is Dylan Cruz. Ball one, no strikes. Right through there for a strike. Two outs. Base is empty. A little bit high. Maybe two and one. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And they’ll do it again. Two outs. Just misses. And now it’s three and two. Wow. This guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Sodto makes the grab and that’s the inning. But the National strike for three. All coming via this three-run homer. It’s now 3 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back now. The starting pitcher in this one, Clayton Beater. What do we have on him? Well, that whip is just below the league average, and that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So, on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him in this one today. Francisco Lindor leading things off and takes a strike. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get Oh, this one high and deep way back there and it’s gone. So, he blasts one out the other way and they’re on the board. It’s 3-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Man, he just barely got that one out of here. And you’ve got to love the effort and left to try and bring it back. He had a good shot at it. Just couldn’t quite pull it off. It would have been a stunner if he did. And now it’s Juan Sodto just missed. backed off the plate that time. The real threats are coming up. Already giving up a home run in this inning. He’s going to really have to bear down. swing and a ball lifted left field. Lyle makes the grab. One down. Here’s a Mets lineup now. Already they find themselves down three runs in this game. So, there’s work to be done. Yeah, you want to see them come out with a little urgency here. You don’t have to score all three runs, but put something up on the board. And that’ll make you feel a little bit better about your opportunities, but if you’re looking at that three-run lead and saying, “We’ve got to get it right now.” You can put yourself up against a wall and not have really good at bats. So, just trust the process. Trust that your pitcher can hold them right there. These players could find themselves back in this ball game. Nowadays, with advanced metrics and increased use of moving the infielders around, defense isn’t necessarily about making errors. Are you able to get to the ball? Are you able to position fielders where hitters hit the ball, but within the new shift rules? And that is cut on and missed. And they count one and two. in an area that goes unnoticed is the coach that’s responsible for positioning and then uh the research person that’s providing the information. So what we’re seeing in baseball so many more people behind the scenes that are contributing to the success between the lines. Foul ball another 22 upcoming. Back when you played it wasn’t the empirical data we have now. It was a guy with a ruler and a diamond taking a colored pencil and drawing a line where he thought someone had hit the ball. Right. that or just going off of gut or field. What does it look like his swing is today? What’s the pitcher throwing? They are sticking to the metrics and what seems to be most consistent for that hitter regardless of who the pitcher is on the mound. Brandon NMO stands in here. tried to hold back his swing there, but went around a little bit high and one and one just missed. Was a good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Come on. And that’s a little bit high. Three and two now. Well, clearly not too happy with the call there. Thought he caught the top of the zone and you could pretty much read his lips saying that’s not up. Two down to base hit. He was all over that one. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. So man aboard, Mark Ventos up now for the Mets. outside. Next pitch is outside. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. [Applause] That one ripped left field. That’s back and it is gone. He flexes his power with that swing. It’s their second home run of the inning. And this game is tied. It’s 33. This game is breathing new life thanks to that home run. And that’s exactly what they needed. [Applause] He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft and gets the home run. And now here’s Jeff McNeel. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. Struck him out without a swing. That was pretty nasty. But two round trippers in this inning. The long ball was working. We’re tied now with three apiece. Back after this on the show. Back here in Queens. Top of the second. And here’s the catcher, Riley Adams. Adams hitting seventh in today’s lineup. And he was a third round pick back in 2017. Peterson back to work. That’s in there. Strike one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Swings through that one out in front that time. Pitch misses there. It’s a ball in two strikes. And that one is inside. That misses the zone and it’s three and two. Recognize that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and that’s the first out. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. And now here is Robert Hassel the third. First pitch and he just misses. One down. Base is empty. Hard hit left field. Base hit in. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Step off throw to first. Hassel back on a dive. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. Runner on the go. Pitch misses. Safe at second. And that was not close. Well, we all know this team is struggling right now and sometimes you just got to do something different to generate some offense. A little more aggressive right there to put the pressure on the opponent. We’ll see if it pays off on the scoreboard for this team. Let’s go. Man at second and a foul ball. Tied up here in the early going. York. Wow. Just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either. And it stays fair. The run comes in from second. It’s 43. Backto back base hits showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. And next is the designated hitter, James Wood. Walked his first time. There’s a strike. Still in the second already at 44 pitches. So, some concern there. And that misses and the count even one and one. Stirring in the bullpen for the Mets. Number 21 up and throwing. Holmes getting cranked up as well. Just off the inside edge. Next offering misses down and away. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. And ball four, two aboard. Second walk of the game for him. And he’s been really patient at the play, a game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. And here comes the Mets manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. David Peterson departs and a line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. The Mets with a new arm on the mound. Number 21. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Here’s CJ Abrams now. Singled and scored his first time. And the slider just misses. Way to lay off that pitch down. And that drops in for a strike. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. That’s outside. Two and one. Tough spot right here. Couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Swung on. Belted. That’s back there. Brings it in. Rounder tags at second and he moves up to third now. Two away. Now batting first Josh Bell. And now the switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell. He’s already homered here in this one. That’s down and in. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. This one smoked out to left. And that’s the third out. One for the Nationals on this RBI double. It’s now a 43 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Bottom of the second. And stepping in for New York, Brett Batty. Chris is definitely going to finish the year with a new careerhigh in homers. We just don’t know how many he’s going to hit quite yet. And a curve is down and in. Great take right there. Showed some really good discipline breaking ball coming in. You see it well, but don’t trust that it’s going to hang on for a strike. Nice job. That clips the zone. That’s strike one. Matthew Ross umpiring behind home plate for us in this one. He’s got a reputation for having a bit of a wide strike zone, Chris. Yeah, no doubt. Boo. He rewards pitchers when they’re working the edges and sometimes a little bit beyond that. So for the hitters, just have to really be aware. Don’t miss your pitch when you get it early in the count. Abrams tosses to first. That’s one out in the bottom of the second. Batting eight catcher Luis Torren. Here’s the catcher for the Mets, Luis Torren. He swings and misses at the first pitch. 0 and one. Drilled in the air. High and deep right field. Cruz going back on this one. Pulls it in on the warning track. batting ninth center Cedric Mullins up now for the Mets. Mullins [Music] outside. That’s ball one. And that one fouled off. That’s inside. Next offering is in the dirt into the outfield base hit. So the two out knock extends the inning and sends them back to the top of the order. Now batting. So the lineup flips over. Francisco Lindor comes up to the plate. He’s already homered in this game. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond, and this guy is at the top of the list. Yeah, we go beyond just the, you know, fielding percentage and, you know, what it looks like, but the ability to have range and, you know, close holes that, you know, are normally there against an average defender. But this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness. And there’s the strike. And the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump. And defense shouldn’t either. Hitting wise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics. But the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. When you look at the ability to save runs defensively, but then also put runs up on the scoreboard, that’s the kind of player that every championship team needs to have. Andy O2 and that’s downed away. [Applause] in the air out to center and that’ll fall for a base hit. So that’s two straight two out hits. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. When you flare a ball out behind second base, it’s really a tough spot for anyone to get to. And you’re never trying to do that as a hitter, but when you do, I tell you what, you’re yelling at it the entire way to get down. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. First and second, two outs. Here’s Juan Sodto. That one misses one and0. [Applause] And that one fouled off. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. Squirts away a little bit. Well done behind the dish. Activity in the Washington bullpen. Number 50 looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Number 78 also getting ready. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. And that will end the inning. [Music] Two left for the Mets. Score holds at 4-3. on to the third inning. Now it’s the Nationals cleanup hitter Dalon Lyle. First pitch just misses. You know, these Nationals doing a good job of putting the ball into play, and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. And here’s a stat for you, Boo. They’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at. It’s pretty special stuff. Not so good if you’re out there on the mound. And that’s in for a strike. [Applause] Up and in. And that’s ball three. [Music] Come on. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Well, he froze him with a great fast ball right on the corner. It’s kind of like bowling when you think the ball’s going to get into the gutter and somehow it just hangs onto that edge and knocks down a pin. Well, he got the outside corner of the plate and got that called third strike. And now up for Washington, Luis Garcia. And first offering is fouled off to the right side. McNeel handles, throws to first. First two batters retired here in the top of the third. Now batting right fielder Dylan Cruz. Two down, base is empty. Now it’s the right fielder Dylan Cruz. He’s 0 for one. DC. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. There’s the strike. One, one strike. Swinging a miss. And the count is one and two. That one missed. Goes down looking. Nothing across here this half. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Nationals four and the Mets three. Now pitching for Jake Irvin gets the ball. Now he doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. Well, one-run game and now it’s the polar bear Pete Alonzo. He was a strikeout victim his first time. On the corner for a strike 0 and one swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. Well, that bat seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strikeout. You got to be better at the plate right there. At least to foul something off. Extend that at bat. Here’s Brandon NMO. One for one with a single so far. Drips one to right. Cruz makes the grab. Two down. Not fooled at all right there. He was clearly all over it. But sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone. You’re looking for one of those bloop hits to get a knock sometimes. And now it’s Mark Vientos. And that one a little below the knees. Ball one. Just missed. [Applause] Ground ball up the middle dives and he can’t hang on. The throw won’t get there in time and he’s out at first. Well, patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count. Fielder got a piece of it, but the way that thing came off the bat, no surprise at all. He couldn’t pick it cleanly. That’s a very difficult play and that swing definitely was deserving of a hit. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Jake Irvin is done and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. On the mound now, Mitchell Parker. And he’s had his struggles so far this year. As you can see, the inflated looking to bring that down a little bit right here. So, two down. So, up next for New York, Jeff McNeel went down on strikes his first time through. Swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. Hassel makes the play and the inning is over. Mets strand one still down a run. It’s 4-3. Welcome back. And now on the mound to start the fourth, Klay Holmes. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Well, one-run game. And now the catcher comes up to him. Riley Adams. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. That one’s in there. Strike one. Come on, New York. This to third. Grabs it bare-handed. Throw to first on the money. Nice play. He was out early today working on that very play. And stepping in is the speedy Robert Hassel the third. A single and a run scored and a walk. Come on. That one inside. Ball one. Let’s go. New York. Just missed. One out. Base is empty. swing and that ball smashed on a line. Soda makes the catch. Two down. Now batting Brady House. Brady House digging in for the Nationals. Doubled his first time. All right, come on. Let’s go. Inside and it’s one and0. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. In there at the knees. Let’s go swing and a miss. That’s strike two. Big time jam right there. I hate it as a hitter, but standing in center field, you can’t help but chuckle a little bit. Line to left. NMO makes the grab and that’ll do it. Three up, three down for Washington. And it remains a 4-3 game. Brett Batty up now for the Mets. Batty really thriving with the bat this season here at home. First pitch misses and delivers outside. and a foul ball. Makes the count. Two and one. Swing and a high-fly ball left field. Hessle sizes this one up. makes the grab and there’s one down. Up next for the Mets. Here’s the catcher. Luis Torren flyed to right his first time. That’s in there. And that is strike one. Holding on to a one-run lead. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And it’s even up. And that’s in there at the knees. One down, base is empty, and that’s in the dirt. And it’s a full count. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. swing and a highf fly ball in the air left field. Makes the grab and there’s two gone. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. popped up foul territory behind the plate. Catcher tosses the mask, settles under it, nabs it, and that is that. Down in order go the Mets. They still trail it here. Four to three. Ready now for the fifth inning. And now here’s the Nationals leadoff man, James Wood. Holmes back to work. Swinging a ground ball and it stays fair. Now batting short stop CJ Abrams. CJ Abrams digging in for the Nationals. Abrams having a lot more success on the road this season. Let’s go. Holmes, a righty that throws with power, 31 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. Well, these gnats, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. They’ve hit seven line drives already, and even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. And that’s a base hit. Lead runner holds up. They’re at first and second with nobody out. Two consecutive base hits for these guys here. Just a solid swing right there. Caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. First and second, no outs. Here’s Josh Bell. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. Now a highf fly ball out to left center. He’s got it. Rounder tags at second and he’s in safely at third with one out. Now batting number 51 and a dangerous hitter coming to the plate. Dalon Lyall will hit next. Runner on the move. Foul ball there. [Music] Two on, one out. Ground ball could be two over to Mcneel. Over to Alonzo for the inning ending double play. So it’s no runs, two hits, no errors, and one left on base. Home half of the fifth coming up. It’s the Nationals four and the Mets three. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound number 50. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Nobody out. Lindor is a chance to tie it. Well, he’s been having a great year this year and hitting home runs at a good clip and the matchup is very favorable. That’s a strike thanks to the sweeper. Strike two. Oh, that got him. And that’ll put the tying run on base to start the inning. Substitution being made at first. Pinch running here. Jose Sirito. [Music] No outs. Runner at first. Juan Sodto up now for the Mets. Go for two in this one. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. Just missed with a single base runner. Because of all the power, they are dangerous to tie this thing up or take the lead. Missed with a change up. Now 2 and 0. Got to be real careful here. 200. He’s hunting for his pitch. Here we go. And that’s downstairs. And it’s three and 0. Pete Alonzo in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Siri on it first. Nobody out. And ball four to a board. Walks out of the bullpin. Can absolutely kill your momentum very quickly. They’re in some hot water trying to protect this lead. Big at bat now as the polar bear Pete Alonzo steps in. You got to feel like there’s a pretty good chance this game is going to turn on one swing. Late swing fouled off. So the tying run at second. Ground ball right side could be two to second. Abrams. Plenty of time at first. That’s a double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Left fielder Brandon NMO. Brandon NMO getting ready to hit. Singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two. Swinging a miss as he was late. breaks his bat and pops it up. Gets it to first. That’s the third out. Inning over. So coming into the game now on defense, Ronnie Mauricio, he’s in it. Shorts stop and here is Luis Garcia. Second base Luis Garcia. Yeah, that’s fouled off. And he’ll one and there’s a foul ball. Tries to check his swing. Now a look to third. No swing. He held up. Daryl Parker with the call there. And that’s outside. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes and one gone. Up next for the So digging in Dylan Cruz. Dylan Cruz singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean watching him track balls in the outfield it is beautiful. first pitch and he just misses. And I would say that most great defensive outfielders, it’s kind of natural. There is some work that you can do to it uh to improve your game, but ultimately you either have it or you don’t. [Applause] There’s one guy that I can think about, Boo, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. And that’s low for ball four. Well, that’s a really good take right there. And that’s just mentally prepared knowing that if it’s not on a TE, you’re going to take that pitch because you still have one more strike to work with. Not easy to lay off, but he did an excellent job in that plate appearance. Adams in the box again, takes a strike, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Holmes checks on first. Yeah, some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. We talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases, despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid. Tapped softly on the ground, gets the catcher by a step. Robert Hassel the third digging in for the Nationals. One for two. Remember Mark Katse was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. Right through there for a strike. Yeah. And I figured you would get Kat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. And that is downstairs and a count. Two and one. Cruz at second with two down. Fouls one off. Two and two. Finish him. Laser could be trouble. Cruz around third. He’ll score easily. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. So runner at second, two down. Up now for Washington. Brady House. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Applause] Man on second, two down. That’s towards center. Mullins under it. Here we go. Makes the catch and that is that. But a run will score in the inning on this RBI double. It’s now a 53 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. Welcome back. And here comes the closer. Jose A. Ferrer gets an opportunity to square off against his former team. So I wouldn’t be surprised if he came out a little extra jacked up right here. So now here’s the Mets DH Mark Ventos. And it was a homer back in the first inning that got his day started at the plate. Yeah, Boo. A two-run blast and that swing will give him confidence the rest of the way. [Applause] And that is out of play. Bottom of the zone and a called strike. That’s to third and that’s a fair ball. Singy, that’s a start. Yeah, as soon as that ball got through, I could see down in the dugout, players pumping their fists. They know that they got a chance in this ball game. Jeff McNeel stands in. Fouled off. He was late. with the tying run at the plate. And the home team trying to pull it out. And that one fouled off. He’s gone off speed. He needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the zone. [Applause] swings and misses. Struck him out. Nice job behind the plate there. That’s that classic wipe out slider below the zone right there. Just nasty. Looks like a fast ball thigh high that you got to protect the zone and then it’s just that late break that fools you and kind of makes you look silly. Now the third baseman Brett Batty. Come on, let’s keep it going. slides, but he can’t come up with it. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. All over that one right there. There’s nothing cheap about the way he got that one through the infield. That was ripped. Caught out in front and didn’t get under it like he would have liked, but definitely put a good swing on it. Now, a huge at bat in this game coming up. And now Luis Torren. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. One out, runners are first and second. [Music] Come on, let’s go. Two on, one out. Looked like it was a little bit up. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Well, at that velocity, if that’s all you’re seeing, 88, you can handle that all day long. That’s what you get in batting practice. But off the velocity of the fast ball, that is a very tough pitch to adjust to. Next pitch just misses and a full countdown. Really good take, especially with two strikes. [Applause] Call four. He walked in and that keeps things going. Pretty good pitch on 3-2 right around the knees, but just no help from the umpire. And now the center fielder Cedric Mullins. Golden opportunity right here. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. Base is loaded. One away. [Music] [Applause] That one down the line. Fair ball. One runs in. The second run scores around third. The relay to the plate. Tag got him. They cut down the winning run and we will play on. The base runner did a great job of making that a close play at the plate with an excellent slide. Made the catcher work to get out there and put down the tag. The throw was on the money and that’s what made the difference. Big time play to cut down a run. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the nationals pen. Jose a Ferrer done for the night and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching for the on pitch now for the Nationals number 78. He’s making his fourth appearance of the season. Ronnie Mauricio now getting his first played appearance of the game here in the sixth after subbing it on defense. Swing and a miss. It’s 0 and one strike. That one almost got him. trying to send this to extra innings and fouled off. [Applause] The shorts stop takes a ball. Back and forth we go. A seessaw battle in the late stages of this one. In the dirt, blocked, tag out, and they cut down the winning run at third. Inning over and it could have been worse. They get two and draw even again. Seventh inning coming up. We’re all tied up 55. [Applause] Now pitching for the New York Mets, number 39, Edwin Diaz. Back here at City Field, we go to the top of the seventh. Now it’s the DH Jameswood. Ball one there. He was late there. Strike one. I guess you throw it that hard, you can get away with locations like that right down the middle. But I still think it’s a dangerous pitch. Don’t want to do it again. Man at second. Close but called a ball. Three and one. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one, that’s the one. When she elevates, guys aren’t touched it. Ball four. He walked him and that’ll keep the line moving. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. And the batter will be the shortstop, CJ Abrams. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So, they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. [Applause] Outside with a breaking ball that clips a corner. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. Checks his swing. Now appeal to third. No swing. Just held it back there with the go-ahead run standing at second. And here in extra innings, fought off foul. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And that is a big first out. And here’s the first baseman, Josh Bell. He’s been a great free agent sign. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Next offering in there for a strike. That is strike two. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. Two on, one out in the air. Right field. Sodto sizing this one up. drops into the glove. Two away now. And a dangerous hitter coming to the plate. Dalen Lyall digging in for the Nationals. One for three. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Two aboard, two outs. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. [Applause] Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. Punch it out. Hit on the ground to short. Mauricio, they get the force. They miss a big chance to take the lead here late. Two left on midway in inning number seven. And it’s time to stretch. We’re all tied up 55. Set for the last half of the seventh. And stepping in for New York, Ronnie Mauricio. [Applause] little bit low and that’s ball one. [Applause] And a big swing and a miss. Man, he was really tardy on that fast ball. Great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball. Add some velocity to it on the next pitch. Can’t catch up. moved to second and he’s back in safely. Good wheels out there on second and he’s getting a pretty big lead right now. Definitely looking to score on any hit to the outfield and a count one and two. You can do it. Let’s go. The shorts stop takes the ball. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here, too, too. He’s already seen the curve ball couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. That misses the zone. Three and two now. Juan Sodto in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. You got it. And a 3-2. He fouls it off. Will do it again. [Music] 3-2 swing and a high-fly ball right field. Cruz moving under this one. He’s got it. Runner tags at second and the throw’s offline. Safe at third. Now batting right. Big situation. And here comes the big bat of Juan Sodto. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Definitely a strikeout situation right here. Lots of ways for that go-ahead run to score if the ball’s put in play. This guy’s got good power with one swing. He can win it for him. Back door him with a breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. Popped up to the left into foul ground. He’s under it. He’s got it. There’s two away. Now batting first base then Pete Alonszo. Here’s Pete Alonzo. So clutch you could argue that he’s been this team’s MVP this year. right through there for a strike. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there, but left the bat on his shoulder. Two down. Go ahead. Run in scoring position. Swing and a miss. And he struck him out. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. We go to the eighth. Now it’s the second baseman, Luis Garcia. Luis Garcia. Diaz back to work. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run, so you really have to execute on the mound. The one in the dirt. Safe and the goal ahead runs at third. Well, that right there can be a tough read as a runner on second to see if the ball’s gotten away enough to move to third. You have to be sure you can make it because you’re already in scoring position. Well, he was sure there and now he’s only 90 feet away from scoring. [Applause] Strike three. Got him swinging. Huge strike out there. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. So up next, Dylan Cruz swing and a miss. Go and one with a go ahead run at third here in extra innings. [Applause] in the dirt. Wow, that’s a great job behind the dish there. The one, two, strike three. And that’s two in a row. Oh, that’s a huge strikeout right there. Big second out. Infield was in. They were playing the fullcourt press and he got the swing and miss keeps this one tie. This next at bat should be a lot of fun. The odds of wiggling out of this just went up considerably. And here’s the catcher. Riley Adams 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. Pitch is in there and it’s 0 and one. Let’s go. Two outs. Fans another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. Nationals leave one. Our score holds at five apiece. Now pitching number 45 comes on now bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So we’ll see how it works out. Runner in scoring position, no outs. And stepping in for New York, Brandon NMO. Listen, there’s absolutely no reason to pitch to this guy right here. You nibble, you see if he’ll expand his zone, but don’t give him anything to hit. If you walk him, not a big deal. You have a double play opportunity set up. That one finds the zone. Strike one. York late on that fast ball. He’s falling behind in a huge spot. Boo. Got to do what it takes to come through. Maybe choke up on the bat a little bit. Spread out those feet. Whatever it takes. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. He needs to throw that breaking ball with just a little more conviction to get the swing and miss. Going to count one and two. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading to count one, too. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you can get hurt. and a one-two on a line and it stays fair. The winning run crosses the plate and the Mets get a walk-off win 6 to5. So exciting to see a team walk it off. Not so much fun if you’re on the other side, but what a great way to win. This team is celebrating and this win is welld deserved. [Applause] [Applause] 65 the final here today for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
