Posey: Giants “Definitely” Interested In Re-Signing Verlander

Im not convinced either way that he’d even like to be back.
Pretty sure Verlander would prefer to go to a team than can actually score runs.
Tbh I’d be ok with this but I’ll be shocked if HE wants to come back.
That means:
A. He won’t get an offer anywhere else
B. We will overpay
C. He knows we need pitching
D. The crop for pitchers in free agency this year is average at best imo
His consistent, financially-motivated movement between teams, particularly his use of contract opt-outs, shows a player strategically maximizing his value within the existing business structure of Major League Baseball.
Maybe he’d rather play for a team that will score runs for him and has a bullpen that won’t consistently blow his opportunities for a win.
Would love Verlander back but there is no way he is coming back given the horrible run production of this Giants’ team
Would very much like to see him back. I think him, Ray, Webb, and another reliable SP can be a pretty vicious hydra of a rotation, supported by a hopefully full armed and healthy bullpen. He’s obviously got the durability and drive to keep pitching at a very high level.
I think his chances at 300 wins were made so much more difficult after having missed the 2021 season with Tommy John. If he had pitched on ‘21 and had a healthy 2024, he’d be sitting either right at 300 right now or be just a few wins way. But, with the way he’s pitching now, I think he can still do it. Even if he can’t get to 300, he’s got a lot of strikeout record in reach. He can definitely take a stab at those
But shit, we need the starting pitching. And he’s a legend of a Righty that can help our crop of young righties. Might as well.
The question is how many years left in the league does he have? Would he retire this year
It might benefit us being in the NL. There might be some science of him having a harder time if he goes back to the AL since he’s spent almost all of his career there.
Edit: 3.60 ERA vs NL team and 4.05 ERA vs AL teams this year.

Would love to see JV back with the Giants next year. Same 1 year/ $15M contract? Funny enough, if the Giants would’ve offered a 1 year/$10M extension around the all star break, I bet Verlander would’ve taken it. He’s been so clutch down the stretch, bringing his ERA+ to 107. (In other words, 7% better than league average, including park adjustments).
He’s third on the Giants in innings pitched. His FIP (3.71) has come into alignment with his actual ERA (3.75). His performance over the past month has brought his overall 2025 numbers from a SP5 profile to a true SP3 (1.6 WAR and rising).
He’s been a great teammate and mentor. The way baseball tends to even itself out, I wouldn’t be surprised if more breaks go Verladner’s way next year and he wins 10+ games. Hopefully he stays in SF! Webb-Ray-Verlander-Roupp is an excellent start to the rotation.
The Giants would definitely need to bring in another solid starting pitcher (preferably a lefty). And most baseball teams with playoff aspirations have six proven starting pitchers to start the year. Injuries and ineffectiveness is the rule, not the exception. Might be a controversial opinion, but methinks Birdsong, Whisenhunt, Seymour and Teng have all demonstrated that their ceiling is that of an effective bullpen arm. Ditto Beck and Winn.
Would be amazing if Posey inked extensions with both Verlander and Dom Smith before the season ends, but I’m sure we will need to wait until the offseason to see how it all plays out.
Do you guys not realize he is almost 43?
He’s got every other award possible, now it’s about achievements and getting to 300 is next, and that’s not going to happen with a team that plays in a ballpark that struggles to plate runs. I’d like to have him back, everything I’ve heard/read is he’s fantastically grounded person but, all the blown leads have got to eat away at a persons psyche.
Depends heavily on how much he’s enjoying himself this year, which is hard to know.
