NYR Training Camp: Edstrom, Shesterkin, Parssinen & Berard Media Availability | Sept. 19, 2025
I went to Dallas after the year last year. Yeah. I mean, it’s always tough missing time and I mean, when I when I got my results back from an MRI, I was kind of bummed when I realized I was going to miss a long period of time, but I got some great help by the trainers here and all this all the doctors and staff around us. So, uh I mean, I was back to full pretty much when when the season ended around around there. So, I’ve had a good summer. I worked out hard and and I’m ready to go again. How did it feel to get the contract done? Oh, it was great. I mean, I uh I love this organization. I love the city and uh this team in general, every guy in here. I’m excited to to have two more years with them and I think we we’re building something great here. So, hope two years. So, it sounds like you had a pretty normal summer as far as all that. Yeah. Yeah. So, I stayed a couple of weeks after that the season ended and then when I got back home, I was 100% just all out go. So, it’s been a good summer. Mhm. And the uh how’s it feel like on the ice now? Like, do you even feel anything or No, nothing. Yeah. 100% normal. Yeah. Good, good, good, good. Uh, how’s it feel playing with JT and Mika? It’s a pretty fun line you’re on. Yeah, it’s cool. I mean, they’re two great players, so I’m just trying to soak it up and and learn from them, but no, uh, it’s been it’s been two fun games and we’ll see what happens in the future. How much are you itching to get things started after last season prematurely? Yeah, it’s been a long off season. I mean, I haven’t played a game since February or really, so yeah, I’m excited to get out there, just skate around, shoot some pucks, bump some bodies. So, yeah, it’ll be fun. Does it feel different going into this season? Because like I mean, do you feel a little more established? Do you feel like you kind of showed what you’re all about last season and now coming into this camp, that’s something you can build on? Yeah, for sure. I mean, I think last year was a big step for me, but you always want to improve. Uh, I still see myself as a pretty young guy and I feel like there’s parts of my game that I can always improve. I can always get stronger, faster, better, right? So, uh I’m looking forward to taking another step this year. Why’ you guys move from that end though to this? I wish I knew. You act like it was his decision. Yeah. No, I don’t I actually don’t know. I don’t mind it though. I get to speak some Swedish with me. Yeah. And then I got Rems with me, too. So, I was going to say they had to wanted you because you like, you know what? If we can’t have Crer that might be it. Yeah. All right. Cool. Thanks. Awesome. How’s it been? First two days. Hard work. Yeah, it was pretty hard work. So, but I’m so happy to be here finally and get for a summer camp. So, we enjoy it. You have a new defenseman in front of you. Glad you know you go back with him a long way. Yeah, I know him a lot. Uh he’s great person, amazing defenseman. So we so happy to have him now. What are your impressions of Mike Sullivan so far? Oh, he really good coach. He know what he wants. So he put hard work for everyone. I’m enjoying. Does it feel different, Eigor? Like the practices and the way that you guys have worked like for goalies is the same. Yeah. What does that Gabri do for you guys in terms of like just being a stable defensive defenseman? He is pretty good two-way defenseman. So he play really well in front of the myet and he can join the rush. He very smart. So he doesn’t need to work super hard. He very smart. He know where he need need to be at one time. You uh with this team you know a bad year last year. Do you feel like it’s a fresh start now and you feel like team is in a better place? Uh yeah of course we are focused on a new start. we forgot last season. So, we just need to turn this page and be ready for next uh preseason games and for opening night. What are your expectations for this group going into this event? Stanley Cup. So, if you professional athlete, you need to reach like the best always and it should be your goal. What was your communication like with Mike Solomon over the summer? Uh I just spoke with him on the phone one time and after that I went to Russia. So unfortunately he didn’t come to Russia like for Mika. But but I’m really good cooker. So if someone was barbecue your your offseason like the way you train everything is it the same or have you changed things over the years? Like it was the same. Pretty much the same. Yeah. But you have a good routine that you feel good about there. Yeah. Yeah. So I I did everything like usually maybe more focus on my strength. But your whole life you had the shootout as as part of hockey. Do you like it as a goalie? Do do you hate how much do you focus on? Uh I wish to score sometimes. But they don’t let me do that. Maybe we need to change the rules. Would you like to do that? Yeah, probably. But my handle not really well. But I promise I can work hard. What did you do for the summer? Where were you? Were you back home or Yeah, after Worlds I went back home, took off well for a while. Then, you know, saw friends and family. That’s huge. Always always during the offseason cuz it’s uh when during season I’m so far away from my family, so that’s nice. And then a lot of training, practicing, and then couple trips. How was worlds for you? Uh it was really nice. Uh I’ve always dreamed of uh playing for team Finland and that was the first time I had the chance. So, it was a great great tournament even though we didn’t get far, but I personally felt like I had a good tournament and um experience wise it was great. Did you have a between the legs goal or something like that? Didn’t I see some crazy? Uh no, but uh uh it was OT OT goal. I went uh like behind the legs on the goal and not on myself. That probably gave you some confidence. Yeah, sure. Yeah, of course. Yeah, it’s always nice to score. How how important was it for you and how nice was it for you to have the contract done pretty early and and then have that out of the way for the summer? Like it seemed like that happened that came together pretty quickly. Yeah, I mean I was very happy about it. Um I mean always when your contract expires you sometimes you get it done fast, sometimes not. like the year before I it was a week before the camp started when I when I made the contract with Nashville and now now I was done almost right after the season. So it was not a thing I had to think about like during the summer. I just could concentrate on my training like being in good shape uh and all of that. I didn’t have to concentrate about the contract cuz it was done already. So it was it was really important and nice for sure. What does that tell you about how the Rangers feel about you? No, of course. I mean, it feels like cuz they they want to get it done. Um that they have confidence in me, which is which is nice. Um I have I have in myself, too. And I just got to um be my best and um show that I’m worth the contract, too. What are your expectations for yourself coming into this season? It’s like that 3C role was there for you. Yeah, I mean, I don’t take anything for granted. I think I’m in the position like looking looking on my last past season, it was it wasn’t great, you know, being in three teams and bouncing all over. Yeah. all over the lineup, sometimes out. So, I’m uh I don’t take anything granted. I think it’s a huge camp for me. I had a good summer. So, I mean, that’s of course role I want to I want to aim at and I feel like I can be. But, I uh like I said, I had I have a lot to prove. You moved around a lot last year. So, it was nice to just have this training camp to settle back in. Yeah, I mean, of course, like last season when I came here, like it was at the end of the season. It’s it’s always tough. Like I mean that was my second trade, but it’s not it’s not of course easy to come come into team that late in the season when everything is kind of settled already. So now it’s nice to have like a with the new coaches and all that like fresh start fresh start kind of and um you know get a get along good training camp, get a lot of reps um get familiar with with u with more with the guys with the system and all that. What do you feel like you need to show this new coaching staff to to earn a spot in the lineup every night? I got to be consistent. Of course, I feel like I have the I have like the ability to play, but I got to do it like night in night out. Um like the consistency has to be high and uh whenever we get more meetings meetings done with the coaches when when they show like what they want from me and I got to execute really really good whatever what where whatever it is and whatever the role is. And like I said, like I feel I have confidence in myself, of course. I got to just, you know, put it out. And if it’s a role where you’re expected to to, you know, be really good defensively and maybe get a lot of Dzone starts, things like that, like like do you feel like that you have the skill set to to do well in that? Yeah, I mean, I feel like I’ve always been like a 200T player, so whatever, like I said, whatever the role is, I’m I’m buying into that and u I’m going to excite. What have been your impressions of Mike? Uh, really good. is I mean the intensity has been really high. Uh we have been had hard practices, a lot of skating. He seems like a like good spoken good spoken coach. He’s u like everything he says like you can feel he means it. He’s been he’s been around for a long time. He’s um he expects a lot. He’s I mean I’ve seen it now for a couple of days. It seems like a fair uh like you got to earn whatever like you’re not going to get anything for free. Uh, but he’s he’s he wants the in intensity to be very high. Has he uh told you what he kind of expects out of you going for the year? Uh, I think we’re going to get into that more like um going forward. So, how was your summer? Summer was awesome. Um, I was up here in Darien, Connecticut working out with Ben Apprentice. Um, I was with my host family, same family I’ve been with the last three summers. That’s that’s awesome. They’re a huge support for me. It’s kind of a second family away from away from home. Um, was able to get a whole summer here. beginning of June. So June 9th, I believe I got down here. So yeah, pretty much the whole took a the shoulder check. Yeah. Yeah. So I was there. Um but yeah, I mean we always talk about how lucky I am getting drafted by the Rangers and being from Rhode Island, too. I mean, other than Boston, it’s the next closest team to home. So it’s pretty special to be in the area and have family and friends around. Um but yeah, being so close to the rink and getting in here, skating with the guys in the summer, working out with Apprentice and Darien. Um go home on the weekends like an hour 50 drive home. So it’s good. Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and then back up here during the week. So, it’s been a good summer, but uh happy to finally get things back. It was too long. How beneficial was it to train, you know, with all the guys here and just fellow NHLers and just being in New York? Yeah. No, it’s it’s special. It’s super awesome. Um put yourself push yourself um every day with the best of the best. Our workout group was me, Foxy, Reps, and Quickie um every day for the whole summer. So, it was it was awesome awesome to compete with those guys every single day in the gym, on the ice, um hang out outside of the rink, just continue to build upon our relationship last year. Um I mean, they were all especially Quickie and and Foxy. Um being veterans here, it’s uh special to kind of bond with them all summer and grow closer and learn a lot from them. They’ve been around the league for a while. They’re both superstars in this league. So, just to kind of pick up on their daily habits is is awesome. Being able to reps in the gym, I mean, he’s always way bigger and stronger than I am, but it’s it’s funny. And um it’s it’s awesome to p try to push myself um to I guess try to be as strong as him even though it might take a little while, but uh it it was awesome to be with those guys all summer. What are your expectations for yourself going to this journey? Yeah, I mean I think just to put my best foot forward. Um new coaching staff here. Big first impressions I think are huge. Um and I think I’ve done a great job this summer to get myself in the best shape that I that I could have. Um and just come in here and and try to play my game. That’s the only thing I can do. Try not focus on guys around me. um how things might shake out. But um I think if I put my best foot before and just focus on myself, stay confident, I think things will fall fall into place. I’m a big believer of everything happening for a reason. And uh I mean I did the work to put myself in the best shape that I could this this camp coming around. So um yeah, I mean just try to play my game and and see what happens. You played a whole bunch of games last season. So how does that help you in terms of you having played 30 odd games and stuff like you know what did you learn that’ll help you in this game? Yeah, I think for me the biggest thing was um kind of how quick it is um on that ice. Uh I guess speed wasn’t the biggest thing, but everyone sticks and it’s kind of everyone’s in the in the right spots at all times. Um got to know what you’re doing with the puck before you even get it. Um and that’s something that I think I learned playing 35 games last year and something that I could take into this training camp being my third. Definitely feel and being here last year definitely feel a lot more comfortable this time around. Um but yeah, I mean a little nervous I guess coming in, but try to use that as motivation and confidence. Um, if I wasn’t nervous, it’d probably be a bad thing.
