Oakland Athletics vs Boston Red Sox – MLB 9/17/25 Full Game Highlights (MLB The Show 25 Sim)

From historic Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, Major League Baseball on tap. It’s the Athletics and the Boston Red Sox. First pitch coming your way next. All right, just about ready to go here at Fenway on the mound for this one. Steven Mats and Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason, he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Tap foul at the plate. Next pitch is outside. Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. So runner aboard to start the inning. Short stop. Jacob Wilson. Jacob Wilson up next for the A’s. Come on. Rip to first. Caught. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. And Chris, this offense is facing a defense that is well known for kicking the ball around a bit. How aware are you offensively of a bad defensive team? Well, you’re not like completely aware because you’re really focusing on your approach. But I think when you know about a team and how they can be sloppy and as it plays out in a ball game, you’re more intent on saying with two strikes, I got to make sure that I put the ball in play because even if I don’t get a knock, there’s a chance they commit an error and it leads to us scoring more runs. And that’s in there for a strike and quickly nothing at two. Oh, and two. Langelers stands at first with one out. And that one almost hit him. Man at first. One away. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Ball swing and a miss. Stock came out. couldn’t catch up to the heater. Well, even though he strikes out, he saw a lot of pitches and he battled. Plus, he gave the guys behind him an opportunity to see more from the pitcher. Not the result he wanted, but that’s still a good at bat. Now, it’s the right fielder Brent Rooker. That misses off the outside edge. That to right. Ref Snider. He’s got it. And that is that the A’s strand one. Now the Red Sox will get their shot. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back inside Fenway Park. Red Sox coming up to hit against Luis Severino. This guy has stuff. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strikeout. He knows he needs to miss barrels. get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s gotten this one. Jiren Durant, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. pulls that one foul. And there’s a foul ball. the one two on the ground right side. Oh, and it hits the base and they get the out after the ricochet. Time now to check out the lineup for the Boston Red Sox. One thing these guys do very well is stay out of the double play. They’ve hit into the fewest of any team in the league. Chris. Well, Boo, we don’t see situational hitting as that art as much as we used to because guys are slugging the ball. They’re hitting it over the fence. But when you see a team that has the ability to shorten up, hit behind runners and go first to third or first to home, man, that just adds to the element of what you’re able to do in other ways with the bat. So, posing pitcher better not walk anybody or give them free base runners because these guys know what to do when men are on. Foul ball. One of my favorite stats all time, 1997, the Hall of Famer Craig Bigio played in all 162 games for the Astros on Astro Turf and he never hit into a double play. The throw to first and they get Bregman for the owl. Oh, we talk about how the ball is coming out of a pitcher’s hand. The way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. Two outs, space is empty. Here’s Story now. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. Two outs. Base is empty and it’s fouled away. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Severino. And that is a good eye on a pitch down low. Now one and two. Battling here as he fouls it away. Severino kicks, steals. That’s foul off to the right side. keeps the AB going. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another eighth pitch of the at coming up. Cut on and missed. And it’s a strikeout. And that is the inning. One, two, three. Go the Red Sox scoreless after one. New inning getting started. And here’s the rookie center fielder number 32 Mads. 33 years old and he was a second round pick back in 2009. First offering and it just misses. 10 [Music] That one down the line and it hits the bag on the run. Throw to first. Not in time. An infield knock to start the inning. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. [Music] Daryl Hernese up next for the A’s. Step off throw to first. Be safe. off the plate. Ball one. Right through there for a strike. our plate umpire Earl Hris. Yeah, with Hendrickx boo kind of interesting. He’s a good consistent umpire, but you do hear that he kind of favors one side of the plate more than the other. So, it’s really hard to know for sure, but I think that usually it has to do something with where he sets up prior to each pitch. The one two foul ball. Second inning here. No score. Foul ball still a one and two count. Cuts out it. Misses. That’s a strike out. Pulled the string on the change up. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Next up for the A’s, Brett Harris. Step off, throw to first. And he just got his hand in there. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes. That’s in for a strike. Throw. 71. Swing and a miss. And it’s a two. He’s clearly out there throwing pitchers pitches in this situation. First base is open. He walks him. No big deal. Man at second one, two in the dirt. The pitch. That’s a ball. Two balls, two strikes. Pop dump and he makes the catch. Two away. the ace catcher Willie Macyver. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. And now here’s the A’s catcher, Willie Macyver. That’s off the mark. And that’s ball one. Runner at second. Two down here in the top of the second. And another ball. That one close rule the ball and it’s three and0. Max Schuman in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Two outs and one in scoring position. In for a strike. Three and one. on the ground to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So, they can’t do anything with the leadoff single there now to the bottom of the second. We’re tied nothing. Back here in Boston, here’s Nathaniel Low. Come on, Nathaniel. Severino back to work and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Next pitch off the play at a count one and two. Popped up to the left into foul ground. One up, one down. second base. And stepping in for Boston, Romy Gonzalez. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Looks like a really good fast ball today. You can hear that catcher mitt popping. Looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one. misses the zone and he gets him to chase. Didn’t recognize off speed. Thought it was fast ball a little bit out in front. Popped up. Langelers, makes the catch for the out. Two down. Masataka. And next for the Red Sox, Masataka Yoshida. And that’s in there at the knees. [Music] Ball one and one. This to third. whips it across. Red Sox go one, two, three. Nothing doing for Boston. We’ll move to the third with no score. Well, here we go. Top of the third scoreless game. Here’s the left fielder, Max Schum. [Music] tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. just off the outside edge. And now it’s even one and one on the ground to short. Tosses to first and one away in the top of the third. Now batting second base Langalers. So the batting order turns over. Now it’s the power speed combo. Shay Langalers. He’s one for one. Let off the game with a single bounding ball here. Rolls. Foul. Top of the third. No score. Field two. That’s down and in. That one off the mark. The countdown now two and two. Swings through that and it’s a strike out. That K is his third of the game. Next up for the A’s, Jacob Wilson. The MMO for him is contact. A guy who’s going to deliver average. Not a ton of power. He’s looking to hit a line drive somewhere. Y that’s why it’s a team. And when you look at a lineup, he’s a great two-hole hitter or a guy that you could put at the bottom to help turn that lineup over to have some momentum for your top hitters coming up to the plate. Next offering is in for a strike. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat, if he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. Broken bat, roll it to first. He’ll do it himself. The A’s go quietly. Nothing across here this half. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. No score. Back here at Fenway set for the bottom of the third. Joe stepping in for Boston. Rob refer first pitch and he just misses. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. The one. That’s a ball outside and that is out of play. [Music] That’s excellent location on the fast ball right there early in this game. If he can do that all game, should be a good outing for him. Close one. doesn’t get the call. Full count. Caught a break right there. Pretty good pitch on the outside corner. On the ground right side handles, throws to first. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. Carlos. And now it’s the catcher for the Red Sox, Carlos Narvz. [Applause] That’s in for a strike. Fought off foul that misses the zone. Ball one. struck him out looking. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. And a foul ball. swing and a miss and he was fooled. Big time jam right there. I hate it as a hitter, but standing in center field, you can’t help but chuckle a little bit. And one and two. chopped out in front of the plate. Tosses to first and it’s a one, two, three inning. Red Sox go down quietly. Still no score. Back here in Boston. And now the first baseman, Nick Curts. And that’s him for a strike. He’s been pitching well, but going through this middle of the order, second time through, we’ll see what kind of adjustments are being made. gets a piece and stays alive. Sea strikes him out for the second time today. Well, that pitch wasn’t even close to being a strike. And that just goes to show you how defensive hitters can become when they’re up against an 02 count. You’re just hoping for a mistake somewhere near the zone that you can get the bat to. But right there, he was clearly anxious. He was swinging when the ball left the hand. So now it’s the four-hole hitter, Brent Rooker. And that one is in the dirt. One and0. That one missed. Yeah, the pitch is in for a strike. And it’s two and one. Fourth inning underway. No score. Swing and a miss. And the count is two and two. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. Story sends it over to first. Two quick outs here in the top of the fourth. the centerielder Thomas. And now the center fielder reached on an infield single his first time and that drops in for a strike. Next offering is fouled back. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Ground ball right side. Tosses to the pitcher covering the bag and he has thrown four shutout innings. A’s go quickly and quietly there. And we’re still knotted at zero. Ready to go. Bottom four. Now batting Jiren Durant. Jiren Durant. That’s a strike and one. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps when over 80% of your first pitches are strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. ground ball left side and he can’t come up with it, but the throw to first gets him easily and that’s the first out. Now batting third base, Alex, here’s Alex Bregman 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat and that’s through there for a strike and it’s 0 and one. If I’m at the dish right now, I am aggressive over the heart of the plate. This guy’s been filling up the strike zone. So, you know you’re going to get a good pitch to hit. And as nasty as his stuff is, you might as well take all three swings. The next offering misses and it’s a ball and a strike. One ball, one strike. Swings through that. Just threw that fast ball by him, elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. The Red Sox hitless so far in the game. He goes down looking. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Trevor Story. Here’s Trevor Story now. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Swing and a ball lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck and it’s off the Green Monster around first heading for two. They hold the runner at second. So another base hit could get us our first run in this one. Well, this one started with a bad jump, a bad read off of the bat. He ends up having to try to leap out of desperation. Can’t come down with it and it turned into extra bases. So, runner at second, two down. Here’s the Boston cleanup hitter, Nathaniel Lo. First pitch misses. The strategy of winning a ball game when you can make that pitcher work a little more, expose himself by throwing pitches. That could be the key to winning perhaps later on. So, a good job of extending this inning, getting a knock with two outs to bring the number four hole hitter up. Man at second. Kiha. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. And that’s off the inside edge. And it’s two and one. Just missed. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and the hitters count. Romy Gonzalez in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. So now two on and two outs. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. First and second, two outs. Romy Gonzalez up next for the Red Sox. 0 for one with a fly out. Fast ball for a strike. One-1. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. Brother edges away at second. Ball on there. One and one. That crosses the plate. And now they’re just one strike away from getting out of this mess. Oh, right to the back stop [Applause] and two in scoring position now thanks to that wild pitch. No trouble moving up to second on that play with the ball getting that far away from the catcher. Nice job to take advantage of the wild pitch. Got him looking. Huge strike out there. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly he’s happy with those results. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Justin Sllayton. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. He tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. Hern batting for the second time and that’s strike one. The Red Sox with some bullpen action. Zack Kelly up and loosening in the pen. Hern was born in Puerto Rico. Next pitch is outside. The 1-1 is fouled off. down to the dirt, swinging a miss, and it beats him for the first out after the drop, third strike. Well, obviously that was nowhere near the strike zone. By the time he got to the plate, people at home watching are thinking, “What’s he swinging at?” But I’ll tell you, some of the brave guys snap off these days is just devastating. It can be so tough to recognize where a pitch like that’s going to end up. So up next, Brett Harris. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that is ball one. Bottom of the zone and a cold strike. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. Next offering is in for a strike. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Chance to strike out the side. Now you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss. Whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. And here’s the catcher, Willie Macyver. 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time. That’s in there. It’s 0 and one. No balls, one strike. Yeah, that’s fouled off. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Got him swinging and he strikes out the side of the fifth. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. And we’re back here at Fenway Park. We head to the bottom of the fifth and the batter now Masataka Yoshida. Anything in particular stand out to you as far as moments at Fenway Park? Wow. You know, it’s unfortunate because I remember as an Oakland A’s player, we were up in the series against the Red Sox two games to none. All we needed to do was close out a Saturday night ball game. We went extra innings. The Red Sox won that. Oh, this one high and deep way back there. That one is gone. Oh, muscle to center field. Third home run of the season. And a Red Sox jump in front. It’s one- nothing. Pitchers are taught to keep the ball down so that you don’t get hurt. But unfortunately on that one, he made a pretty good pitch in terms of location, but it was just a better swing. And now the right fielder Rob Reiner grounded out his first time up. Fast on the inside corner for a strike. That was 2003. And the Red Sox would eventually get their hearts broken by Aaron Boone, but end the curse a year later. fouled off. He was late. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. Last half of inning number five. Tapped back up the middle. Throws to first. One away. That ground ball may have him back on track after the homer. Now batting the catcher Carlos Carbay and stepping in for Boston, Carlos Narvz inside and it hit him. I think he kind of leaned into that one. Son Raphaela now at the plate. Ground it out his first time. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it, but pushing the offensive side for just a second. Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times a ball comes off the bat, automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. Swing and a highf fly ball down the right field line. He’s got it and there’s two away. [Music] Jiren Durant the next to hit. He’s grounded out a couple of times. That one inside. Ball one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Justin Sterner getting loose out there. Number 49 also throwing. Narvay leads off first with two down to the inning. just off the inside edge. And another ball. Alex Bregman waiting to bat for the Red Sox and ball four to a base. That just came apart right there. four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone. And now it’s Alex Bregman for two in this one. That one fouled off. Next offering in there for a strike. And that’s strike two. That’s good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished. Little up and just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Two on, two outs. Severino with another strike out. The Red Sox pick up a run on the homer. It’s now one- nothing. It’s Major League Baseball on the show back here at Fenway Park. Start of the six, John Shami with Chris Singleton and leading off Max Schuman. Max [Music] Slate back to work and a curve drops in for a strike. Boston’s bullpen with some activity. Garrett Whitlock, the right-handed sinker baller. He looks to be readying himself. Wilson getting loose as well. Paul one. That one finds the zone. That is strike two. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Next offering is downstairs. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. And now the count filled up. Three and two. Shay Langalers in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. That’s to third. Oh, look at the stop. Throw to first. Got him. What a play. So many people fail to realize just how great defensively Trevor Story is, as you see on the dive right there. And I think part of it because he played on the same side of the infield as the great Nolan Aronado. Now here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Sha Langalers. Swinging a ball lifted in the air right field. He just missed it. And there’s two down. Batting. Jacob Wilson up next for the A’s. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Right through there for a strike ball. on the ground to third. Sends it across to first and that is the inning. So they go quietly there. Hard of the order 345 coming up. It’s the Red Sox one and the A’s nothing. Justin Sterner taking over on the mound and he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one in innings, so he’ll be tough to get to. Well, one-run game. Trevor Story comes up to the plate. One for two in the air right side and it jumps the wall in foul territory for an automatic double. Well, this tends to happen more often in this park than others and that short fence is just so inviting for hitters. You see a lot of balls bounce over for an automatic double when no one can run it down. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Nathaniel Low up next for the Red Sox. Now a check out of second. Back safely. And a strike on the outside edge. [Music] ball out. Movement in the bullpen. Brady Basso appears to be getting loose. No outs. Runner on second. And that one fouled off. Looked like you got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, I want to stay up the middle that way. If you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. If you’re a little late, opposite field. That one misses. It’s two and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the bottom of the sixth. That one ripped and it goes just fouled. [Applause] And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. off the plate inside and it’s three and two. Ninth pitch of the at bat do next. Stays alive. Man at second. Foul ball and it remains a full count. swings and lines a base hit into left field. Here’s the throw to the plate. Safe and the runner from second scores on the play and they lead by two. A costly mistake in the outfield thanks to the bad read and terrible timing for that to happen. That’s a play you just want to forget about. Romy Gonzalez digs in now in the corner for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Red Sox leading it by two. Pitch misses. And the count even one and one on the inside corner for a strike. Back to back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. Cut on and lifted in the air. And that’ll fall for a base hit. Lead runner holds up. They’re at first and second with nobody out. Up next for the Red Leftiel Masaka Yoshida. First and second, no outs. Masataka Yoshida up next for the Red Sox. He’s already homerred in this game. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Thinking about Yoshida, he’s never going to be the biggest player when he’s on the field, but that doesn’t mean he can’t hit. He gets on base and doesn’t strike out very often. That combo makes you a valuable asset to your club. Next offering is in for a strike. And that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. Highfly ball out into left center field. Schuman sizes this one up. He’s got it. And there’s one down. Well, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Rob Reed up next for the Red Sox. Has grounded out a couple of times. And that misses. And that’s ball one. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Fast ball in for a strike. And the count one and one. Red Sox by two. [Music] Next offering upstairs. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. Next one misses. Three balls in a strike. Three ones. That’s a base hit. Headed for the plate now. A long throw home. It’s offline. The run comes in and they’re up by three. Picks himself up an RBI. I could watch base hits like that one all day long and so could every hitting coach in the league. Just a nice line drive into center field. And now Carlos Narvayz. He’s 0 for one. And the first offering is not close. [Music] that clips a corner. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch that’s going to produce a strike out or a ground ball double play. Swings through and that’s a strike out. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of the zone right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. And next for the Red Sox, Sidon Raphaela. And that is in for a strike. One. That was the sweeper, but it missed. Next offering is fouled back. That’s a ball. Two and two. Fights it off. He’ll see another. Gonzalez, the runner at third. Ref. Snider at first. Two out of the inning. [Music] chases that one out of the zone. Inning over and it could have been worse. So, it’s two runs on four hits, no errors, and a couple left on. Seventh inning coming up, it’s the Red Sox three and the A’s nothing. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Garrett Whitlock. Well, you see the RA very solid and that doesn’t always tell you the whole story, but he’s been really good so far this year. And here’s the first baseman, Nick Curts, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Missed with a change up and it’s one and0. swing and a miss. Well, in this one, the offense is sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving, and manufacture at least one run. Then maybe you get two or three. On the ground, right side, dives and he can’t hang on. The throw won’t get there in time and they catch a break as they get a base runner at first. Brent Rooker. Next up for the A’s, Brent Rooker. Highf fly ball on that one. curling foul down the right side. Oh, one down. And that’s down and away. Runner at first with no outs here. That clips the corner. Just off the inside corner. Two and two. Two balls, two strikes. That one 95 to finish him off. Here’s the center fielder. and that’s outside. Outside. That’s a ball. Just missed. The Athletics trailing by three here in the top half of inning number seven. Line drive and a base hit. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Well, that was one of those high percentage advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher. So impressive that he didn’t get tied up or jammed on that pitch inside. instead good quick hands allowed him to get the barrel to it. Just shoot it up the middle of the field for that knock. Now a huge at bat in this game coming up. First and second, one out. Daryl Hernese up next for the A’s. That one hammered but pulled foul. The tying run at the plate. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Brings it in. And there’s two down. So digging in Brett Harris. First pitch misses. Two on, two outs. And that one fouled off. Strike two. And there’s a real chance they get out of this without allowing a run. That one misses and the count now even up. This one in the air. Low moving under this one. drops into the glove and that’s the third out. A couple of hits in the inning, but they can’t get him home. Midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch. It’s the Red Sox three and the A’s nothing. [Music] We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Number 49. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. And now Jiren Durantated Jiren Durant. [Music] That’s through there for a strike. Cold night tonight, Boo. And that’s a pretty firm fast ball right there. I tell you what, memories of getting jammed, they are creeping into my mind right now. In the air to left down the line, Schuman gets under it, reaches for it, but it’s fouled. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Well, you see him trying to pull that inside pitch right there. And that’s not the kind of approach that you want to have. Even if you do get to it, it’s going to be very difficult to keep it fair. You’re just going to make it a long strike at best. You have to be able to stay within the baseball on the inside of that path to it. And that way, if you’re a little quick, the ball gets hit hard somewhere and it’s not foul. hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Just so sound in his mechanics. Hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. So, a man aboard. Here’s Trevor Story. That one outside ball one. out towards left center. Schuman on the move. Makes the catch. Out number two. Now batting the first baseman, Nathaniel. Oh, Nathaniel Low up to hit. Put together a great at bat last time. Really battled. Ended up with the base hit. And that one is in for a strike. That slider breaking in can be a tricky pitch. If you don’t finish it and have that bite at the end and it stays out over the plate, it can get hit a long way. But that was a good one right there. Next offering is in for a strike. perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Two outs. Not close with that one. And it’s one and two. [Music] Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. And now two and two. And there’s a ball. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score it. Foul tip. Oh, that got her umpire. And it looks like it got him upstairs. Swing and a base hit. Throw in holds the lead runner at second. Two on now with two away. Romy Gonzalez up next for the Red Sox. One for three. One ball. No strike in the dirt. Bregman over at second. Low on at first with two down. Cracks his bat and pops him up. Bang bang play and the inning is over. Two left on. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Red Sox three and the A’s nothing. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Justin Wilson. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. Now, here is Willie Macyver. The A’s in striking distance but have some work to do. Boog, it starts with the laid-off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. Next pitch is outside right now. Behind in the count, two balls and no strikes. No free passes. You can’t allow that. Nice grab. Gathers and throws. And he’ll be safe at first. Now the left fielder, Max Schum. Max Schum. and fires in a fast ball at 95. Wilson in his 13th season. He features a four seam fast, a slider, a cutter. He swings and drives one out to deep left field and it bangs off the monster and now runners at the corners. Nobody out. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. So up next, Shay Langalers. Foul ball there. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 with the tying run at the plate. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Swinging a bouncer towards third, but a kick foul. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. One ball, two strike. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. And he hits a ground ball right side. Gonzalez there for the out. Runner scores from third. Up next for the short stop, Jacob Wilson. And now here is Jacob Wilson 0 for three in this one. Story in plenty of time to first. That’s out number two. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. So, two down now. And here is Nick Curts. Swinging a foul out of play. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run, so you really have to execute on the mound. on the ground over to Low. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. One run, one hit, one error, and one left. Home half of inning number eight. Straight ahead, it’s the Red Sox three and the A’s won. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Elvis Alvarado. Well, he’s been a bit of a wild card out there in terms of throwing strikes. He’s definitely struggled with free passes this year. Masataka Yoshida getting ready to hit. He’s already homered here in this one. and first offering is fouled off. You know, these Red Sox putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. The numbers help tell the story. I mean, they’ve been sitting fast ball and it’s paying off in a big way so far with six hits against that pitch alone inside. Almost got him. Well struck right field. Gone. Another homer. His second home run of the game. And they add a run. It’s 4-1. That’s a swing that’ll boost the win probability for sure. [Applause] A breaking ball on the inside part of the play requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the fresh shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. Now it’s going to be Rob Re. Snider swinging a foul straight back swinging a ground ball up the middle. One gone in the bottom of the eighth. And that’s a great way for a lineup to dominate a game because if a pitcher can’t rely on his fast ball to get outs, I mean that puts a lot of pressure on the rest of his pitches to be effective. And now the catcher comes up to him. Carlos Narvz. He swings and fouls one off. One out. Base is empty and a run in here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. And there’s a foul ball. Foul ball. Still 0 and two. Swag and a miss. and he is down on strikes for the third straight at bat. Oh, tough night at the dish. Punching out for the third time right there. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable at the plate. A little unsure of his timing right now. Not picking up the spin and location of these pitches. He’ll have some adjustments to make. Raphael the next to hit takes outside. The guy at the plate could recognize slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. and he knew right away it was an offspe pitch. That one the other way and a base hit and that keeps the inning alive. Now that is hitter. So now the DH spot Jiren Durant ripped on a line. Makes the grab on the run. And that is that. Boston with another on the solo blast. Last chance coming up for the A’s. Back now and on the mound the closer ais Chapman and we all know about a slider. It’s just filthy man and one of the better runs in the game I’d say. Spin rates very high and it just breaks a ton. Now it’s the right fielder Brent Rooker 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out and a strike out. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And another ball. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Swing and a miss as he was late. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Next offering is fouled back. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another next offering upstairs. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. 100 milesPH. Foul that off. That that’s a good piece of swinging. I won’t say hitting because he didn’t get a knock, but a good piece of swinging to keep the bat alive. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. They’re not ready to go home quite yet. Now, man at first, nobody out. And now the center fielder. That misses the zone. That’s ball one. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Nobody out. At first, the one-1 is fouled off. And that’s it. That one misses. Counts full. Three and two. Still just the second batter of the inning. And on the mound, he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there. Fouled off again and it remains three and two and a foul ball. He stays alive and that one hammered out towards left field. that one back there and it is gone way over the monster. He sends it out of here and they throw a pair on the board. It’s 43. He kept swinging and it paid off. Well, that was a battle boo and he just kept taking his cuts. Finally squared one up. [Music] When you have a team that hits home runs at such a high rate, they can get back in the ball game so quickly. That’s why that leadoff walk was extremely costly. Now the A’s designated hitter Daryl Hernese 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. That missed by a lot. Ball one. looking to get the tying run on base. Late swing, fouled off. Chapman now one-run game. Tap foul at the plate. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. That’s the third. Slings it across. Now one gone in the ninth. That’s why you hug the lines on the corners late in the ball game like this. Positioned perfectly. Manager out of the dugout now. and he’ll make a move to dip into the Red Sox bullpen. Aldis Chapman is done and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Zack Kelly comes on now. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect the tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Brett Harris now at the plate. That pitch in for a strike. Go and one. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in a count. No, that’s outside ball. One-run game here in the top of the ninth and a count one and two. One down, base is empty. Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt out on the drop. Third strike. Two gone. So Mark K going with a pinch hitter here. Tyler Soderstroke. Big spot for him here. In the zone for a strike. That was the sweeper. Doing one. Check swing and he went. That’s strike two. No ball. Two strikes. Kelly is just one strike away. Swang and a broken bat roller towards third. scoops it up bare-handed. Wide throw pulls him off the bag and the inning still alive. One out away from this game being over, but an infield single keeps them alive. They’re still breathing and maybe this provides that last minute spark. Runner at first with two away. Here’s the left fielder, Max Schuman. That one’s in there. Strike one. Oh, with the tying run at first base, he’s looking for something he can get a lot of barrel on. Drive it into a gap and score that run from first base. Trying to close out a one-run lead here in the top of the ninth. Check swing. One and one. Typically, the outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front. Make sure that runner on first doesn’t come all the way around to score and tie this ball game up. They’re down to their final strike. One and two the count is and that’s the ball game. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save. And the final score here, 43. They hang on to win it by a run for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shami saying so long. [Music]
