🔴LIVE 🔴Seattle Mariners VS Houston Astros /September 19/MLB THE SHOW 25
match on the show. It’s the Seattle Mariners taking on the Houston Astros. And now, first pitch coming at you right after the break. Houston Astros. Just about set to go now. And on the mound now, Christian Javier and Singy. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, that whip is just below the league average and that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So, on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him in this one today. All right, ready to go here. Here’s the left fielder, Randy Rosarena. Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. man aboard on the leadoff single. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Couldn’t get any air under it, but he smoked that ball back up the middle. Timing was just perfect. Got great wood on it and there was just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it. Now the number two hitter, Cal Raleigh. And that one a little below the knees and that’s ball one. He was late there. Strike one. Next offering is in for a strike with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. trying to stay out of the double play right here. And now it’s even up. A Rosarena gets his lead at first with nobody out. On the ground, two ball fires to second for one to Walker. And that’s two. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. And now it’s Julio Rodriguez. That one finds the zone. And that’s strike one. Two out. Base is empty. Let’s go, Christian. That one is hammered right field. that’s got a chance. Unbelievable. Makes the catch up against the wall. No score as we head to the bottom of the first. And we’re back. Today’s starting pitcher, Luis Castillo. What’s the word on him? Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. He’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable, and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. We go to the bottom of the first and stepping in for the Astros, Jeremy Pñena. Just missed. Pñena measures 6 feet even hitting leadoff in today’s game and he was a third round pick back in 2018. Next offering upstairs well I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. The wind to the pitch and he walked him on four pitches. And that’s how they get their first base runner of the game. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. Now Koreah up to hit. Castillo will look to first. Pñena dives back in safely. Downing ball here. Rolls. Foul. Misses inside. One and one. [Applause] Runner to go. Swing and a miss. Throw safe. And the go-ahead run is now in scoring position. That was close. But Stackcast shows us why he so often seems to be on the safe side of these steel attempts. Chris. Yeah, you see that plus speed and he needed every last bit of it to swipe that bag. Such a threat on the bases. Next pitch is downstairs. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit, it’s probably going to be a big run, so you really have to execute on the mound. Hit on the ground to the right side. Steps on first for the batting. Now we check out the Astros lineup. One guy leading the way offensively for this club right now, Christian Walker. And he’s leading him in runs batted in this season, which tells me this guy is able to slow things down when it seems like there’s a little bit of pressure. And he’s looking at as an opportunity to do damage. You know, a lot of guys, they see runners on base and they get big, they feel like, all this pressure, I’ve got to get these runs in, but somehow he seems to settle into these situations. So, watch out when he comes to the plate. Jose Altuve in the box now. Takes strike one. [Music] That pitch in for a strike. 0 and2 now. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Swinging a ground ball. Suarez throw to first in time. Now two away as they get a run across. So important to really lock in on an at bat like this. It seems easy with the infield back, but you got to make sure you put the ball in play. Put it on the ground. Brought that run in. And now it’s Christian Walker. Walker. Swinging a foul. Pushed off to the right. And that will get out of play. And ball one. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. It’s in and out of his glove. Still manages a throw. Misplay doesn’t cost him. Inning over. So they scratch across a run on no hits, no errors, and no one left on. Onto the second inning now from Dyken Park. It’s the Astros one and the Mariners nothing. Second inning set to go. And now it’s the cleanup hitter for the Mariners, Josh Naylor. He’s got a nice short compact swing. Doesn’t swing and miss a whole lot. Javier back to work and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. felt impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch. That’s the key. Try to get ahead in the count, then you can play around a little bit more as the at bat expands. Fouled off left side outside low. One and two to count. Too close for me partner to take that O2 fastball, but for whatever reasons he let it go by. He’s still in the at bat. I don’t think he’ll let the next one go. Ground ball Walker and he handles it himself for the out. Batting fifth, the designated hitter. Jorge Palanco. The batter now, Jorge Palano. I’m liking what I’ve seen from him at the dish lately. Hitting better than 350 this month. That’s outside. Ball one. That one ripped but fouled. One down. Base is empty. Swing and a miss. [Music] [Applause] swing and a high-fly ball out towards right field. Hauls it in and there’s two away. Batt Aueno Suarez. Auheno Suarez up to the plate now. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Pitch misses. Two and 0. No strike. Foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Next offering is in for a strike. Waves at the bender for the strike out. Nobody left for Seattle. They’re down one- nothing. back here at Dyken Park. Stepping in Victor Keratini hitter Victor Keratini. Come on, Victor. just missed and that’s in there for a strike and now it’s even. Eric Summersgill with home plate duty in this one. Kind of known for being generous with the corners, Chris. You know, I think that used to be a lot bigger deal in past eras where pitchers were working more in and out with their pitches. But yeah, we’ll see if those corners come into play in this one. Hey, no pitcher’s going to argue at all. Ground ball left side. Throws across the diamond. Leadoff man retired here in the second. Good slider inside right there. Batter fighting to get there. Just rolled over it. Got the ground ball. And here’s the catcher, Yiner Diaz. Chris, it’s been a good year for him, having already set a new careerh high for RBI’s in a season. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Looks like a really good fast ball today. You can hear that catcher mitt popping. Looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one. Swinging a miss at a slider. No balls, two strikes. Next offering misses and a count one and two. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Really nice slider right there. Sweeping across the dish but just couldn’t hang the edge. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field and it drops in. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. Sanchez. Jesus Sanchez up next for the Astros. [Applause] And they’re swinging a miss in the on deck circle. You really want to use that opportunity to see some pitches and time up the fast ball. Last thing you want to do is miss a good hitable fast ball early in the count. And that’s in there at the knees. Man at first, one away. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with. Swing at a high-fly ball to left. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Batting eight center fielder Jake Meyers. And stepping in is the speedy Jake Meyers. Singing he’s never finished the season with more stolen bases in his entire career. Swings here and drives one well left field way back and you can forget it. A two-run homer. His fourth home run of the season. And they add a pair. It’s three nothing. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. [Applause] So many times a sinker inside is a foul ball off the ankle for the batter, but that time he did a really nice job of staying inside the pitch and getting through it. And next to hit for Houston, Zack Cole. [Applause] Close but called a ball. One and0. Base is empty. Two away, but two runs are in. Bottom half of inning number two. And he pumps in a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. And now two balls in a strike. Jeremy Pñena up next for the Astros [Music] headed towards the corner and it stays fair around first heading for two. He’s there. It’s a two out double. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. So, the batting order turns over. Jeremy Pñena up next for the Astros. He walked and came around to score his first time up at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. The shorts stop takes a ball. Some activity in the Mariners bullpen. Ryan Woo up and loosening in the pen. Jackson getting loose as well. Cole on it second with two down. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Line drive. Fair ball coming home. He will score. Picks himself up an RBI. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. And here comes the Mariners manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Luis Castile won’t go any further. And this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. Brian Woo gets handed the rock out of the pen. Hasn’t pitched in the last three days. So runner at second, two down. Carlos Koreah up next for the Astros. In the air, right side. Kenzone should have this one. Nabs it and the inning is over. Three runs on four hits, no errors, and one left on base. We play two full. It’s the Astros four and the Mariners nothing. Back here in Houston, all set for the start of the inning now. Dominic can zone. They’ve got a potent lineup and when you think about teams capable of rallying from this kind of deficit, they’re right at the top of the list. So, two balls and no strikes. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. That pitch in for a strike and the count’s even at two. In the air to left down the line, calls it in and there’s one away. [Applause] Batting eight, Leo Reebas now at the plate. Come on. just missed. Fouled off to the right. And a big swing and a miss. One ball, two straight. Well, with two strikes, you want to stay back long enough for that breaking ball, but he handled a fast ball slightly elevated. Good job by the hitter right there to spoil it away. Cut on and lifted in the air. Cole makes the grab and there’s two gone. Fatty ninth short stop JP. Now here is JP Crawford. There’s a strike. The guy’s going this good. He’s retired seven in a row. You got to step out of the box. Fake bunt. Do something to break it up. Liner. And that should be extra bases around first and hustling for second. And he’s in there standing up with a two out double. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. Just a great approach. Looked like that was exactly what he wanted to do with that pitch. And right off the bat, he knew he was taking that wide turn at first to head for second. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. back to the top of the Seattle order. Now it’s Randy Rosarena hit in the air right field and that is that one left for Seattle. They’re down four nothing. Set for the bottom of the third. Here’s the former MVP Jose Altuve. Altuve always seems to be setting records or reaching milestones. Boo. In 2023, he became the fastest player to reach 2,000 career hits, 200 home runs, and 200 stolen bases in MLB history. And that one misses up and in. And one and one. There’s the strike. Give me a break. Swung on. Belted. That one’s got a chance. And it hits the fence. and he’s going to get to second with nobody out. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Anytime you smoke a ball off the wall, you kind of think about what it could have been, but obviously you have to be happy with that result. Now it’s going to be Christian Walker. Grounded out his first time. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. [Music] Runner at second. Nobody out. Pitch is in there. That is strike two. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. Astros. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strikeout. And there’s one away. Just indecisive in that at bat. He couldn’t commit to the slider. Tried to sit in between. Just not able to put the bat on the ball. Vic Keratini at the plate. Swinging it much better this season at away games and here at home. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly into third now. So, runners at the corners and one out. The flip to the pitcher covering. Quick recovery from the misplay pays off for the out. catcher Yer Diaz. And now the catcher comes up to him. Yiner Diaz known for his rocket arm behind the plate. Just missed. Altuve on third with two out. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. swings and blasts one deep to left center and it one hops the wall and in it second with an RBI double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Against good pitchers, you got to take advantage of the mistakes. That was right in his wheelhouse and he didn’t miss a stitch. So runner at second, two down now. The left fielder, Jesus Sanchez. He’s 0 for one. That one outside. And that is ball one. Runner at second. Two down. Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. Swings through it and that’s a strikeout. But a run will score in the inning on this RBI double and the lead is now 5 nothing. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here in Houston, John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Cal Raleigh. Let’s go Astros. Come on Astros. And there’s the strike. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Swing and a miss. And he was fooled. Quickly in an 02 count. You’ve got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in play somewhere. Then you got a chance. That misses. Now one and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Pulled the string on the change up. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Here’s the center fielder, Julio Rodriguez. Fly to right. His first time. Here we go. Astros. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. It’s just been an impressive outing so far. Continues to pound the zone pitch after pitch and he’s been able to stay down. That’s what’s been key. Outside and the count is one and one. One out. Base is empty. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Good eye right there. Really good take especially with two strikes on its way to the corner and that’s a foul ball. That’s way outside and a full countdown and a foul ball. He stays alive. This one in the air. Walker snags it for the second out. Now batting first base Josh Naylor. Two outs. Space is empty. And now it’s Josh Naylor grounded out his first time up. There’s the strike. Naylor measures 5′ 10 in 235 lbs and they traded for him earlier this year. Swing and a miss as he was late. They just threw that fast ball by him elevated and if you’re not looking up in that location very difficult to catch up to especially with that velocity that one inside. It’s a ball and two strikes. O2 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. That’s going back back some more. That’s a bomb. Home run number 20 on the year. And they’re chipping away. It’s 51. [Applause] That one was a hanger. And pitchers typically don’t get away with making a mistake like that. And right there, he made him pay. Base is empty with two away. Jorge Palano up next for the Mariners. Gets the outside corner with that one. [Music] Yo, one and a swing and a miss there. Two down, base is empty, but one run across. Top half of inning number four. That one missed. He missed the zone, but I don’t think he missed his spot. That was a good pitch with two strikes. [Applause] on the ground to third and foul ball. Fights that one away. Still one and two and misses inside. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Ninth pitch of the at bat. Do next. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headtohead. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to fly ball down the line. This has got a chance and it is foul. goes down looking, but not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast. It’s now 51. You’re dialed into the show. Bottom of the fourth and now the center fielder Jake Meyers. Jake Meyers check swing and he went. That’s strike one. Right through there for a strike. fought off foul. Meyer stays alive. Hard ground ball base knock and the leadoff man aboard. I’d say a mistake pitch in an 02 count. Too good of a pitch to hit right there. You have to expand the zone. keep that leadoff man off first base. Zack Cole up next for the Astros. One for one with a double and a run scored. That’s a little bit low. Well, these Astros really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. Looking at the numbers, they’ve got four hits when they’re behind in the count. That says they are absolutely battling at the plate and just not giving up despite what the count says. And another ball. And if you’re a manager or a hitting coach, you love to see your team really fighting for every at bat, every pitch. It tells you a lot about how they showed up to the ballpark today. late on that fast ball. Two balls. [Applause] Ground ball left side. Could be two. There’s one on a nailer. They get two. Well, I think that double play was all about awareness and that internal clock just serving him so well. He knew he had to be quick. He took it to second himself and then he fired it to first just in time to double off a very fast runner coming out of the box. Man, that was outstanding. That one fouled off. Two down the fourth. Stays. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Astros are down quietly. They’re up 5-1. And we’re back. Ready now for the fifth inning. Here’s the third baseman. AU Heno Suarez. The M’s in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laid-off strike. Well, these Mariners, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group and on the mound. You know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Oh, big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed. It’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed. They tried to check the swing, just couldn’t do it. Kenzone batting with one down. Takes the strike. Foul ball there. The offense needs to start showing some fight against this starter. He’s doing his thing out there. They’re going to have to push back at some point and make him work a little bit harder. And Eric Summersgill punches him out. That’s a strike out. Two down, base is empty. And up next for Seattle, Leo Reebas. [Applause] Oh, I think the key, I mean, if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. in the air center field. And he makes the catch and that’ll do it. So Luke Jackson gets the call. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. And here comes Carlos Koreah. 0 for two in this one. Koreah. First pitch misses. Well, these Astros, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. They have five extra base hits on the stat sheet so far. And that tells me they’re seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well. With all those extra base hits, it’s easy to think we’re going to see that trend continue the rest of the game. They seem to be really locked in at the plate. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. One down. Jose Altuve. Jose Altuve up to hit here. Drove it off the wall last time. Just missed out on a home run. on the corner for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Well, that’s the money maker right there. Two strikes slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter. I mean, that’s just tough. You’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off. And that one fouled off. Hammer down the right side but foul. Two outs. Foul ball still 0 and two. Swing and a miss and he got him. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one, two, three. Nothing doing there for Houston. They lead this one though 5-1. We’re back and they make a change to start the six. The new pitcher, Nick Hernandez. He last pitched four days ago, so he should feel pretty fresh. Nick Hernandez. And stepping in for the Mariners, JP Crawford doubled his first time up. The shorts stop takes a ball. The Astros have some action in their pen. From Valdez up and throwing. King also throwing. That one ripped right center field. Hops over the wall and that’s an automatic double. That ball exploded off his bat end off the warning track as well as it bounced over the fence. And it sounded really good, too. He just put together a really nice swing and just missed a home run. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Randy Rosarena the next to hit. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. man at second and a foul ball. Well, they gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone. I’m sure he’s kicking himself and would like that pitch again. ripped on the ground to second. Altuve slings to first. Now one gone in the top of the six. Now batting catcher Cal Raleigh. Cal Raleigh getting ready to hit. He’s one of the best players in the game. way outside and it’s one and0. Check swing. No appeal. And strike one to the catcher. [Applause] base hit and a run in to score. Now batting manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Nick Hernandez gives way. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. So they turn to their closer Brian Abrau. And I can’t imagine any save is an easy one. You’re holding a small lead on the scoreboard. And you know those hitters are going to give you the best at bats they can. So it’s always high stress. Let’s see what he’s got here to try and close it out. One gone runner at first. Julio Rodriguez up next for the Mariners. And that’s downstairs. Ball one. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. That one misses. Now 2 and 0. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. pitches in for a strike. Now two and one in today’s game. Not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds, they’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with Raleigh at first. One gone now. A fly ball to right center. Cole brings it in and there’s two away. Up next for Seattle, first base Josh Naylor. So last chance for the Mariners. Here’s Josh Naylor. He’s already homered in this game. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. [Music] swing and a ground ball base hit right field. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Up next for Seattle, the designated hitter. Jorge Palano up next for the Mariners. You got to feel like there’s a pretty good chance this game is going to turn on one swing. And he takes one right on the black. 0 and one. [Music] You see the velocity 97 with that fast ball. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] The Mariners down to their final strike. This one popped up middle of the infield. Abrau ball game. After four wins in a row, you start to think a little bit that you’re on a roll. And that’s the momentum that just takes on a life of its own. Players start hitting up and down the lineup. Never know who’s going to come up with the big hit, who’s going to come out of the bullpen and get the big outs, but it’s a good feeling and you want to extend it. And your final score 52 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
