From Baltimore to Singapore: Christopher Steffens’ Fan Story | Baltimore Orioles

You know, Singapore is is a European. It’s a former British colony. And so, a lot of the folks out there, they’re into rugby and soccer or what they call football. Baseball is is picking up in Singapore. It’s certainly huge in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. I started following the O’s Memorial Stadium in the mid70s. Luckily enough, I saw Brooks Robinson. I saw Jim Palmer pitch. So, that started my love for the Orioles. I have a global role, so I work a lot of hours. I get up most mornings 5:00 a.m. The games, a lot of them will start at 700 a.m. my time. So, I’m in the office. I’m watching them all the time while I’m working. I think it was 2015. We had a pitcher, Wei Yi Chen, who was Taiwanese. We were on vacation in Taiwan in Taipei. My son and I were walking around with Orioles hats. People were high-fiving us. We went into a bar. I tried to buy a drink. They bought me drinks. People had O’s hats on. And that just shows you how big this sport is and how it’s, you know, getting out there globally. Having been outside of America, it really brings me back and reminds me of being an American. You can’t get any more American than being here. And then as you go up, you get the seats, you see that beautiful grass field, a lot of the orange. That’s what really uh makes me happy. [Music]

Christopher Steffens is a lifelong Orioles fan who cheers on the O’s from 9,600 miles away in Singapore. Christopher shared his fan story with us during a sit-down interview at Camden Yards.

  1. Cool. Ive been an O's fan since i was 4 or 5. My grandfather used to compare me to Earl Weaver as a kid because I was small and would freak out when I got upset so he bought ne an orioles cap and from that point they were my team. I am 48 now and I have lived my whole life in Central Ontario. I travel to Toronto every time the orioles are in town, and my parents would drive me to Baltimore every summer in high school to see games at memorial and then camden yards. Everyone I know are jays fans but I've never waivered. After sone serious health issues in my teens I got to meet Cal in the dugout in Toronto, he took time for me after he was told about me, it was a total surprise. Anyway, I guess I'm saying this just to say that theres O's fans everywhere.
