"According to league sources, McTavish is willing to sign a long-term deal, in the seven-to-eight-year range worth in the neighbourhood of $7 million to $8 million per season. The Ducks, however, have pitched a five-year contract worth around $5.5 million per season."

As u/observer-of-ganymede and I were discussing in another thread, if this report is accurate then McTavish wants to stay in Anaheim until his 30s and is willing to lock himself in around $7 million per year. That's not unfair, IMO, and is a deal I'd have signed him to a week ago if I were GM Pat Verbeek.

Comparisons:
– Matthew Knies
22 years old when he signed a 6-year, $46.5m deal ($7.75m per year)

– Frank Nazar
21 years old when he signed a 7-year, $46.25m deal ($6.6m per year)

– Quinton Byfield
22 years old when he signed a 5-year, $31.25m deal ($6.25m per year)

The Byfield deal was signed 15 months ago and that was fair market value then but now, clearly, the price has gone up. Asking McTavish to take less than Byfield got over a year ago is absurd.

  1. Pagnotta is a hack. Same day we have numerous reports that the ducks were not attempting to trade Mac he spews a bunch of nonsense about how there were trying. Hes desperately trying to be Seravalli.

At best this is an agent leak to get a bigger deal. At worst its speculative drivel with no real sources.

  2. I mean I kinda feel like he’s asking for a bit too much. I hope he scores more but career stats wise he scores a goal every 3.8 games and gets an assist every 2.8 games.

I think 6.25-6.50 for 5 years is a reasonable contract. I personally don’t want anyone signed to a 7 or 8 year contract.

  3. Just take the bridge deal and you’ll get a fatter deal when then the cap grows and the term is up

  4. this has to be leaked from the MacT camp right?
a retaliation to the media comments by Verbeek…

  5. if this is actually true (hard to believe with media nowadays) then verbeek needs to lock that down at 7m for 8 years. That contract will age gracefully when the cap goes way up.

  6. Assuming these numbers are correct, this seems like a fairly easy outcome – split the middle and end up around 6.25. Personally I’d imagine 7 is probably fine anyway. It’s an overpayment, but not really by that much and 7-8 years buys a bunch of UFA years.

Also a 5-year deal? I appreciate not going super long term, since you’re most likely going to be pushing McQueen into his role, but that’s taking him to UFA status I think? 2029? – my math could be a little fuzzy. 5 years would almost certainly be his last contract in Anaheim.

  7. Terry got 7x7M. I don’t see a problem giving McTavish something similar. Personally I think Terry is overpaid. Maybe that’s what Beeker is trying to avoid?

  8. If I were Mason, I would just call it a day and let them trade me somewhere where they will know my value. Signing 5×5 would make it an absolute bargain for the team and Mason would be very stupid to accept this shit..
