Nothing like a football Friday. Nothing like it at all. Mike Rice, Dante Gomez on this football Friday getting you into the weekend. Closing things out for the week. And rolling into more football tomorrow. Dante, how the heck are you? I’m doing great, Mike. How you doing? I am very, very well. Real quick, speaking of football Friday. Do you ever catch any high school football games around here? I do every now and again. Yes. Okay. Any recommend? I I have yet to go to a high school football game in Colorado and I kind of been wanting to check it out. Well, you know, as soon as I name a school, then everybody, you know, it’s like it’s like naming your favorite relative, and it’s really not my favorite. But that there are some schools that that always have it going. Probably what what Dave Logan does at Cherry Creek is at the top of the list. They’re off this week though. Okay. So, yeah, I’m just looking for like a good environment of a game. Maybe maybe a big top maybe like a top five matchup kind of thing. Well, I’d have to look at the schedule. I haven’t You know what? Let me do a little homework during the break and I’ll see if I can come up with a matchup. But, I mean, there there are high school football is awesome. Oh, yeah. It’s the best. It’s It is just so good to see see the kids out there running around and doing their thing. Uh how missed last weekend and the Broncos go to you know Yeah, Mike, you’re there. Good luck charm. They were of course it was it was all my fault. Uh how long did it take you to get over that one day or two? Yeah. I mean it’s one of those where I’m like like even the next day I was like I still can’t believe that’s how that game ended. I mean there was a lot of components that led to the loss but just you can kind of put your finger on that field goal at the very end. Um I I kind of turned the page though and from that specific play of the field goal into I can’t believe the Broncos allowed 29 points in that game. Thank you. Um so I I kind of have flipped my mentality on I don’t really blame it on the field goal e you know even if you want to talk about Will Lutz missing his field goal or the penalty on the Colts field goal attempt at the end. I I’ve kind of switched it to what is this Broncos defense allowing 29 points to Daniel Jones and the Colts like that that that was ugly on their part. The layers of that one were were tough for me. Normally I’m I’m not that emotional. I’m not I don’t take losses all that hard, but first you had, as you said, the field goal at the end by the Colts, the penalty, the rekick, the loss. So it’s like so so there’s that just in the play and what happened giving the Colts an extra chance and then as you said you start to peel the onion. Well holy cow the offense didn’t score in the fourth quarter. What in the world happened there and the turnover the bow interception and this and that and then the defense was a civ and so it was it was sort of all the layers for me that that kind of carried into the middle part of the week. Then I said, “All right, got to put that.” I It took me longer than I’m sure it took all the players and coaches to get past that one. That one stung. That That one stung. Do you think the players felt that way, too, cuz it sounded like it in their postgame interviews? Um, do you think that helps them at all going into this weekend? I think so. I think it absolutely refocuses them. And we’re going to talk a little bit about that because I I mean when Patrick Certan this week talks about being lazy with his technique, when is the last time we heard Pat Certan be, you know, talk about that, let alone look at his performance and have a game like that? Maybe one other time in his career. So yes, I absolutely think it will serve the Broncos well. I absolutely think they are going to be focused, determined, tough, ready, all of those things. And many of those things we didn’t see against the Colts for whatever reason. For whatever reason. So, we’re going to get into the game, not so much the game against the Colts, that’s ancient history, but looking ahead now obviously to the Chargers game tomorrow. And at the end, we’ll we’ll talk a little bit of college football. But the the question to me on the bigger picture, Dante, is twofold. The stakes of this game for the Broncos and the Chargers, and then what what do we think we know on based on a very small sample size about the Broncos and the Chargers about who we really think they are? Because when you start a season, all that any of us have in terms of following a team are here’s what I think they’re going to be or here are the pieces that I think are in place and so thus I believe they will be struggling here. This kind of team, this kind of identity that that’s all we have. That’s all we have. And by the way, if you want to chime in on the ramoslaw.com text line, please do. 3037131043 and it’s a very small sample size. So my question first off Dante is the stakes of this game. Is there a danger of making too much out of this game given how early it is on the schedule? I don’t I I haven’t thought about it that way. Uh in terms of is there a danger? Um I don’t think so. A first reaction to that question. I I think the Broncos are going to put a lot a lot of importance into the game as they should. Um, you know, it’s a two and0 Chargers team. They’re the Chargers are already two and0 in the division. You can’t let them go 3-0, uh, you know, in the AFC West alone. So, I I think they’re going to put a lot of importance into it. And if, you know, they come out on the wrong side of it, let’s say, and that’s where I guess the danger would come in, I’m assuming. Um, I I I don’t I think they’re just going to have to bounce back the following week. And I I think in the NFL if you start one and So what what are they right now? One and one. Yes. Yeah. So if you start one and two, it is kind of go time at that point. So I I think they’re going to put a lot of importance into it. But the game is important. You can’t be falling, you know, to one and two and uh you know have these high expectations going into the year. Um and at that point it is, like I said, it’s go time. You have to win against the Bengals the following week because one and three is a death sentence as far as making the playoffs go. So, um, I think they’re going to put a lot of importance into it, as they should. I think it’s I think it’s a really important game. I don’t think it’s the season. I don’t think it’s a must-win. I know what would happen if the Chargers start 3-0 in the division. If they if they win this game, that would be the divisional record, which would be I mean I mean, great for them, bad for the rest of the division, which would include the Broncos, obviously. I I just I I don’t I don’t think it’s the season any more than I thought the 0 and2 start last year was the season. Even going into road games against the Bucks and Jets right after that. And admittedly, I didn’t feel very good about going to Tampa Bay when the Broncos were 0 and2 having lost to Seattle and Pittsburgh. And yet they got better. So, I am banking on the Broncos improving because I think that’s the that’s the kind of makeup they have. That’s the kind of talent they have. And anybody who watched the Colts game and thinks this is the Broncos best version of themselves, I think, is just is watching a team that I I feel differently about. So, I I understand what’s at stake. It’s a very important early season division game and I think the Broncos are going to show up. I think they’re going to show out. And yet if they do lose, Dante, I’m you know me, especially early in the season. I try and try and keep that perspective. Even Keel, I get I get it. Gets a little boring sometimes, but that’s that’s the only way I can look at it. And I I don’t even want to think about a loss for the Broncos at this point. No, I think that’s fair. Um, two-parter here for you. When you say it’s not for the season, um, I agree with you that the season’s not going to, you know, go down into a pit at that point if they lose on Sunday. Um, but is it for the division for you? Is it is it going to be too much of a head start for the Chargers? If they’re 3 and 0, the Char the Broncos are 1 and2. The Chiefs are 0 and2 already, looking to go 1 and2 next weekend. The Chargers would be 3 and 0 within the division. Uh, and then second part of that when you said last year you didn’t see it as the season was over when the Chargers were 0 and2. No, when the Broncos were over. Sorry. Sorry. When the Yeah. Yeah, that’s what I meant there. When last season when the Broncos were owed and to you didn’t see it as the season was over, but it was go time. It was you you got to take care of business here um in either Tampa or New York and they were able to do both. So, would you agree with that? At least if you do fall in uh to Los Angeles, it’s there’s not a lot of more wiggle room going forward. Well, well, let me put it this way. I think it’s go time right now for the Broncos. So, absolutely that there’s there’s no giving away games. There’s that that’s not ever acceptable or desirable, for sure. But you also have I I remind myself that there are 17 of them. There aren’t three of them. and as as or two of them. And as much as I hated absolutely hated to see them not only lose to the Colts, but play the way they did while losing to the Colts, disappointing was by far and away the most was the word that came right to mind for me last week for the Broncos. So, I want to see them win. I think they will win. But my question, the the the next layer after the stakes to me, Dante, is who are the real Broncos? Who are they going to show themselves to be? Because we’ve seen sort of the good, the bad, and the ugly of all of the units depending on what week you’re talking about. Week one against the Titans or week two. Offense, not so good against the Titans, much much better against the Colts. defense pretty darn good against the Titans, not so good against the Colts. Special teams, well, not so good in either game, quite honestly. Not not great anyway in either game. So, it’s a small sample size. Again, this is going to come back to what any of us thought the Broncos would be to begin with because we don’t have a big enough number of games to really truly evaluate and say this this seems to be their identity in any given aspect of the game. Who are the real Broncos? How do you answer that? I think we’re going to find out on Sunday. I think it’s hard to say, but there is a track record of this Broncos defense struggling lately. Um, and going back to the end of last season, particularly on the road. Um, I hadn’t really thought about it this way, uh, Will Peterson, uh, denvers.com, uh, analyst and writer kind of showed it out or pointed out to me where if you go back here, the Broncos defense has really struggled on the road. They struggled in Indianapolis this last week. They struggled in Buffalo in the playoff game last season. They struggled in Cincinnati um you know in November or I guess that was December last year. They struggled on that Thursday night football game against the Chargers. Um they’ve allowed 34 points 30 points uh so it was 34 points in that Thursday night game going back to December last year that the Broncos opted into. Uh 30 points against the Bengals, 31 points against the Bills and then 29 points here against the Colts. So they’re letting up about 30 points a game on the road in their last four games here and that’s just unacceptable. So I think they have to make a statement here and let you know even if they are to win I need the Broncos defense to show up. I think that’s very important uh for the rest of the season going forward. I I do too. The the the one game I would take issue with on Will’s list is the Buffalo game. Nobody I wasn’t pretending I won’t even say nobody. I wasn’t pretending the Broncos were as good at the as the Bills. Well, while you don’t think they were as good, the strength of the team was the defense all year and you expected the defense to maybe help them stay in the game and the defense was not. They were able to do it for a large portion of that game. And I get the offense didn’t help very much, but allowing 31 points on what is supposed to be a top five defense regardless if you don’t think they’re quite to the Bills level. I thought the defense was to the Bills level. I thought the offense was going to be the one holding them back, but the defense still did not show up very well. Yeah, I I agree. It was not a great effort defensively in that game, but maybe my my expectations were just lower overall because they played on the road. It was it was they were clearly playing a superior team in Buffalo and Josh Allen is Josh Allen, especially at home. So, was the defense great in that game? No. But to give up 31 to Buffalo given where the two organizations have been and were at the time was not a shocker to me. It just wasn’t. And then the offense didn’t give him a lot of help. On the ramoslaw.com text line from the 6629, I hope you’re right. I see a bad outcome. Bo Nicks will have to help a lot, but I don’t think he’s there yet. When it comes to who are the real Broncos, let’s specifically narrow into what the textter was referring to. Offensively, Dante, I am choosing to believe that the Broncos are closer to what we saw against the Colts offensively than what we saw against the Titans on that side of the football. I just do. Again, it’s it’s only because I believe they’re better than they showed against the Titans. And just like Bo was on and the offense in general was on an upward trajectory after a slow start last year, I think we I I would I would bet more on that than the Broncos offense either regressing or just sort of generically not being that good. Yeah, I would agree with that. I I’ve been actually pretty impressed with the Broncos offense. I know they only put up 20 in that week one. Um, but the the fact that they were able to get JK Dobbins going, RJ Harvey’s looked pretty good so far. Not great, but pretty good. Um, Troy Franklin has looked great so far. Um, there there’s still some question marks as far as the offense goes, but my question marks kind of go to what we saw success in last year. Like Courtland Sutton hasn’t had a great game so far. Um, for sure Marvin Mims hasn’t had a great game so far. Um, and then Evan Ingram, you know, the the the the Joker was supposed to come in here and kind of sh up tight end there. So, I’ve seen enough progression from the running backs and from Troy Franklin at wide receiver 2, which were two of the biggest um liabilities we saw last year was wide receiver two and running back. So, I think they’ve shored up that. They just need to get Sutton going to what he looked like last year. And I know Ingram’s not supposed to play to on Sunday, so that, you know, won’t we won’t be able to see him out there make a difference. But if they can get Ingram and Sutton going, I think this offense could be a top 10 offense in the NFL. All right. If I had to ask you, how many rushing attempts do you think the Broncos are averaging through the first two games of the year? Bo Knicks included. Bo Knicks included. So, all of the and and wide receivers included. What would you say? And I’m putting you on the spot. I I don’t think I don’t think you looked this up. I did not. Um I would go 25. Yeah. 27. Oh, which that that’s pretty close. I think that’s a lot better than last year, I’m assuming. Yeah. Well, and I don’t I don’t have last year’s numbers in front of me. I can I can I can get based on eye test at least, it’s been a lot better running. It has. And and Shawn I thought was better against the Colts than he was in week one against the Titans. And again, I’d have to go back and look at the carries per game. Uh, but 54 carries and the Broncos are averaging 134 and a half yards per game on the ground. I think that has to be a huge part of what they do against the Chargers. I just do. And when you look, again, small sample size, so stats, I I’m not I’m not putting a lot of weight into statistics. the Broncos could could have a great day offensively, not rely on the running game as much, beat the Chargers, and the stats would would not look quite quite as high. So that that qualifier, that asterisk, if you will, is certainly there with just two games having been played. The Chargers defensively or the Broncos opponents, I should say, uh, defensively, um, are, you know, giving up th those yards to Denver. the Chargers uh rushing are only averaging uh let me get it I lo 85 and a half yards per game and we know that we’ve heard all week because it’s true the Chargers were going to be relying on the running game more and yet the Broncos have been the team that does that. So is that trend going to hold? Is that a real indication of where these teams could be headed or is it just the way the first two games played out? I think that’s a fascinating question when it comes to not only the stats and the production from the running game, but the reliance on the running game as well. I think this is a trend we’re going to see going forward. I don’t think it’s just a twoame sample size of why those numbers look the way they do. Uh I I think Shawn Peyton likes his running back room a lot more this year than he did last year. Um JK Dobbins has looked great. I think I think he’s been a great addition to this team. Um, and I think, you know, they spent a high draft pick on R.J. Harvey, so I expect them to use him as well. Um, and even within those stats, I think they could be even better because Bo Nicks hasn’t really ran the ball too much. He’s been trying to kind of dice teams up from the pocket where he’s a great athlete. We saw that last year. He can run around. He can extend plays and, you know, he needs to do it within limit. Uh, you don’t want him taking unnecessary sacks or unnecessary hits. But I think there’s a whole uh next level of this offense that we could see um greater than what we saw in the first two weeks if Bo Knicks can start running and maybe picking up some of those key third downs um and just, you know, extending drives. Bo Knicks and RJ Harvey have the same number of rushing attempts this year, 11. Are you surprised by that through two games? I’m not surprised that it’s the same, but I think both of those numbers are too low. I certainly think it’s too low for Harvey. I’d be fine if if Bo picked his spots and that seems like what he’s doing as a runner. I mean, we we remember the Saints game last year when that’s all he did. Different situation obviously, but I think Harvey’s numbers for sure, his his rushing attempts, I’d like to see them up around, you know, 9 to 11 in a game as opposed to five or six. 9 to 11 per game. Sure. I mean, what do you want to see Dobbins at then? I’d love to see Dobbins 12 to 15. Okay. I like Dobbins at 12 to 15. I think Harvey’s to me at this point maybe closer to eight. Yeah. In my in my head. And then I’d like to see Bonix get to like sixish per game. So I guess Nick Knicks isn’t too far off that um that uh you know number uh if you average it per game there. But I think Harvey’s getting he just needs a little bit more carries. But I like the way they’ve been feeding Dobbins. I think I think Dobbins looked really good and really strong so far. um and just extend not extending these drives but not as many three and outs. They’re really they’re longer form drives. They’re making the defense pay. Um and hopefully you can take advantage of that and it’ll open up the air uh the uh the passing game a little bit for Knicks if the defense really has to come down and try to stop Dobbins and Harvey. Mike Rice, Dante Gomez on Denver Sports Tonight talking about this Broncos Chargers matchup. When it comes to who are the real Broncos defensively, Dante, what’s your gut say there? Because I I I gotta say, and we had we had um someone on the Ramoslaw.com text line uh from the 5013 boys. Everyone acts like it’s a surprise the Colts won. I don’t know if anyone’s noticed, but they’re the cryp kryptonite for the AFC West. They always beat the Chiefs and Chargers. Uh it’s the Broncos perfect storm. That kind of thought. I I I maybe I I would I would have bought into that more during the years when Payton was with the Colts because he was doing that to the Broncos seemingly in the playoffs every year. But defensively, I was surprised that the Broncos struggled to the degree they did against Indie. I was something I was expecting something much more closer to what they did against Tennessee. I am again choosing to believe that they’re going to be closer to the Tennessee defense or the the defense against Tennessee than what we saw against Indie. Are you of the same mind? Uh I am of the same mind. Maybe somewhere in between. I think Indie came in with a really good game plan. I think Shane Styen um schemed it up very well and didn’t let these Broncos pass rushers really get going. The ball was out of Daniel Jones’s hands so fast. Um it felt like no one was getting home. Nick Bonito wasn’t getting no like um it just felt like it was a very quick passing game and the Broncos just weren’t quite ready for it. They didn’t let again they led the NFL in sacks last year and just weren’t able to get home against Daniel Jones. And Daniel Jones, you know, he looked good, but he he he looked more like um he did his job. It wasn’t like he was, you know, making these crazy plays here and there. He was just doing his job and allowing his athletes to make plays. I mean, he had some, you know, great accurate passes. I would say that, you know, but again, there wasn’t like he was striking the ball deep on this team. So, I think the Broncos, you know, went watch the film and um are going to be able to make an adjustment to that um to this uh to the offense getting the ball out so quickly. Um couple miscommunications as well for the Broncos defense on some of those uh Jonathan Taylor wheel routes we saw out of the back field. I think that’ll be cleaned up as well. So, um, I definitely see this defense being closer to the Tennessee game, but I think Tennessee’s offense isn’t exactly the standard. Um, so I I think it’ll be closer to that, but somewhere in between both, right? And the fact that we can all agree that Justin Herbert, like you said, and this Chargers offense, much better than that of the the Titans, and as much as Cam Ward was the first pick of the draft and has talent, he’s not where Herbert is for sure. Well, he’s not working with as much around him either, of course. And And I I don’t know that I would expect the Broncos to hold the Chargers to 14 points, but I would expect them to return to the form that we’re more used to seeing. It it’s interesting when you look at Herbert and part of the story about, you know, will the real Broncos defense stand up is going to be how they fare against a guy that has had good success against him and a guy that of course led the Chargers to the sweep last year, beat him in Denver 2316. He threw for 237 and a touchdown and then the game in LA which was the big one. Uh the the Broncos are up 21-10. Chargers get the late field goal after the the penalty on the punt, the free kick. It’s 2113 at half and then the Chargers score three straight touchdowns and go up by 10 early in the fourth quarter. Herbert was very good in that game. And when you look at his numbers this year, he is completing an eyepopping again two games, Chiefs and Raiders. The numbers are what they are. 72% of his passes through the first two. Broncos have to find a way to to do better in that department against Justin Herbert. As talented as he is and even with the weapons he has, have to find a way to slow him down a little bit. And I think they’re capable. And I think they will. I think they’re beyond capable. I think I think Nick Bonito and that that whole Broncos defensive line got a nice uh week of practice in this week after last week. Uh not not showing too much success there. So, I expect a couple sacks out of this Broncos defensive line. Uh, I expect Pat Certain to come back and show that he’s the best quarterback in the NFL. Um, so I I expect them to have a strong bounceback game here and um maybe temper those Justin Herbert MVP talks. We will see after the break. We’re going to talk about how the Broncos will win, what the offense needs to do, what the defense needs to do. Mike and Dante with you on Denver Sports Tonight. Common Spirit Health. Hello, Human Kindness. This segment on 1043 the Fan is brought to you by Twin Peaks. Eats, drinks, scenic views. It’s a Budlight football Friday. Bud Light, an official beer sponsor of the Denver Broncos. Here’s Denver Sports Tonight. Mike Rice Dante Gomez rolling on a football Friday. Oh, that sounds so good. College tomorrow for the most part. Some college games tonight. Kind of keeping my eye on that Tulsa Oklahoma State game. 103 Tulsa. So, pretty early. I mean, that would, let’s just put it this way, and I know Oklahoma State’s been bad. That would not be a good look for the Pokes of Oklahoma State. Buffs against Wyoming, Rams against Texas San Antonio. We’ll talk about that and those teams in the next segment. Talking about the Broncos and Chargers on this Friday edition of Denver Sports Tonight. So Dante, if I asked you, what is the one thing that the Broncos offense must do to give themselves a realistic chance to beat the Chargers? What would your answer be? If we and we we do not compare notes on these things at all. If we have the same thing, I I would be a little surprised. I would I would be too. What do you have? Get Corin Sutton going. Okay. Okay. I do not have that. I mean, I would love to see Court get kicked. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But, um, I mean, you paid him the this offseason. He was great last season. Him and Bo seem to have this special connection where Bo trusts him. And I it just hasn’t really showed up on Sundays in week one and two. And I think that is the missing part of this offense right now. I think you’ve been able to run the ball great. I think Franklin’s looked good as a two. Um, I think you’re getting enough production uh elsewhere. uh whether it’s you know Pat Bryant um you know he had a touchdown last week right uh I’d have to go back and look I have to up to your test in my well sorry did Mims definitely had a touchdown I thought Brian also call but regardless you get enough production out of the other guys y um I I just think Sutton’s the missing piece at this point to really getting up there and consistently scoring um you know upper 20s what do you have one target one catch Sutton Sutton I believe so yeah you can’t do that I mean you have to that you have to get court more involved and and maybe it’s just Bo saying look I mean just mentally saying I’m throwing it to court which is funny because all all last season he almost defaulted to going to go to Courtland Sutton too much uh all training camp he defaulted in preseason games defaulted to going to Sutton so much that we were worried there’s going to be an unhealthy reliance on Sutton and through weeks one and two we’ve seen the opposite and now we’re saying please unhealthily rely on Courtland Sutton I know unhealthily is not a word like to make up words. I I think that’s fair. I think that’s a good one. What is your sort of floor for Courtland Sutton for in terms of catches and yards for the Broncos to have a realistic chance to beat the Chargers? Uh let’s go like three for 60. Three catches. Three for 50. Three catches. That’s okay. So minimum. Yeah, minimum. I I I think it’s going to be higher. I think it’ll be like closer to five or six, but uh as far as a floor goes, I think you need at least three. And I think yeah, like 50 yards combined out of all of that. I I would put my floor at four or five for for court. I think like that that would that would make me feel like all right, this offense has a shot to do do something. I I’m gonna be a little bit broader than you when it comes to the offense because now this is a stat that you can slice and dice and spin any way you want, but I’m but but I’m still going to use it because I firmly believe the Broncos have to win the time of possession game. They they have to do it and we know for the reasons why. Now, if the defense comes up with a couple of scores, that obviously will skew the time of possession. And yet, the Broncos would still have a great chance to win. I don’t know that that’s realistic to expect that the Broncos defense is going to put up a touchdown against this Chargers offense. But if you win the time of possession game, Dante, I’m thinking they are controlling the football one way or another. I’d also like to think based on what we talked about in the previous segment, averaging 27 carries per game, small sample size, all the qualifiers, that they’re at least trying to rush the football and having some success while doing so. And if the Broncos are controlling the clock and controlling tempo and moving the football, you’re not only uh and I think that’s going to lead directly to points, but you’re also keeping Justin Herbert and that offense on the bench. That would on the sideline. All of that would bode very, very well for the Broncos. I think it’s imminently possible and doable. I don’t want to go crazy and say, “Yeah, they they need to win the time of possession battle 36- 24 minutes.” That that’s not what I’m talking about. But but they need to stay on the field offensively. They need to keep Herbert and company off the field and and I think that will give them the best chance to win. No, I I like that uh that call as well. I think I think the the longer you can keep Herbert off the field cuz Herbert’s looked great so far this season and the less you can have the ball in his hands or even if you make him think that um you know these pos there’s going to be fewer possessions. Put a little extra pressure so when they do get the ball he has that pressure of like we got to go down and score and maybe you can get him hurrying up a little bit and maybe get him uh into a turnover. on defense. Let’s flip it over to the Broncos defense. What’s the one thing they have to do to maximize their chances of winning? Obviously, they could still do this one thing that both of both of us believe they need to do and they could still lose the football game, but what’s the most important factor for the I I’ll go first on this one. It’s impact plays against Herbert. I’m not even talking just turnovers, but when you look at the two games last year, 21 of 34 for 237 and a touchdown. Those were Herbert’s numbers in the 2316 game here in midocctober. He he didn’t throw a pick, but he did lose a fumble. So that’s 62% completion against the Broncos in LA. We mentioned it. 23 of 31, 284, two touchdowns, one pick. Chris Abrams drain was only one of three that he threw all year. 74% completion. And if you recall in that game during the Chargers comeback in the second half, Herbert was very good on the ground. Eight carries, 28 yards in the game. An added dimension that came to the four for the Chargers in the second half of that comeback win. The Broncos defense has to be stouter. They have to be tougher. And ultimately, they have to be more successful in creating some impact plays against that guy. It’s easier said than done. We know it. And coming off the performance against the Colts, it’s like, okay, is this defense capable or how capable is the defense of doing that? I still think they are. I like that answer. And mine’s actually going to be pretty much the same words you used, but in a different meaning. Okay. impact Herbert’s impact Herbert on plays. Okay. Get him going a little faster. Um, you know, maybe get home, maybe get three, four sacks, make him hold on to that ball a little bit or at least make him step up into the pocket or, you know, go out um, you know, not not just let him have a clean pocket all game is basically what I’m saying. Um, get into his face a little bit. Um, not in terms of like trash and talk, but or uh talking trash. um but just get into his face a little bit and um not not let him be comfortable um all game. I think that to me is this defense needs to do that because this secondary has shown they can be really good. Um but I think that the the the defensive line needs to add a little pressure uh onto Herbert. Yeah, I that clearly no quarterback likes pressure and and this is what I really love about Zack Allen and why I thought it was so important to lock him up in a big way. No quarterback likes pressure. Dot dot dot. Especially when it comes up the middle. And we know what Allen can do with pressure up the middle. I love that answer. I I I think we’re both pointing to make some impactful plays. Whether it’s hurrying Herbert, whether it’s chasing him down, whether it’s forcing a turnover, you have to be able to get that guy out of his rhythm. We saw what he can do when he sits back there. We saw in that game against the Broncos in LA with with the with what he can do with his legs in making something happen when a play breaks down. Broncos defense has to be more sound than all of what we saw last year against Justin Herbert. And I think there, see, this is where I really believe, and it’s hard for me to be in the mind of a player because I I’m obviously not a former player, but I have to believe if you’re on that Broncos defense, offense, too, but I want to stay focused on the defense. If you’re on that Broncos defense and you watched the film of the Colts game last week and you saw the breakdowns, you saw the subpar play, I I think any competitor, and I think the Broncos have guys who are of this ilk mentally. It’s like we’re going to go out there, we’re going to put in a better week, we’re going to be more focused, and we’re going to have a better result on Sunday. I just believe that’s part of who they are. I hope I’m right. No, I I I hope you’re right, too. I I’m in the same train of thought with you. I think they uh have that mentality to them, that grit to them. Do you think Vance Joseph throws a little uh extra pressure at Herbert? Do you think we see more blitzes than we’ve seen or uh do you think they try to play it pretty straight up? That’s a great question because my my first thought is the familiarity that these two teams have against each other and these coaching staffs, you know, were both here last year and so we know that that there’s some familiarity there. And I I would like to think VJ has a wrinkle or two. Absolutely. I think you have to at least to be ready for one. I don’t think you force it. I don’t think you uh say to yourself, “I’m going to use it.” You have to use it when the situation’s right. You get the right call. You get the right down and distance. You get the right field position. But I’d sure like to hope that he’s got some things drawn up that maybe Justin Herbert wouldn’t be as familiar with or not familiar with at all. I think you have to and I think you have to try and get some pressure on him and I I think that means you have to have confidence in your back end where we know that there’s some talent back there because even if Herbert breaks contain against the initial wave of pressure, I think you want another guy right there to be able to to pull him down if he decides to run. How much confidence do you have in VJ to put a game plan together that will harass Herbert? Like out of 10, maybe like a a six and a half, seven, I’m not I’m not totally sold on it. Okay. Just cuz we talked about the trends in the defense lately and yeah, if it’s another one of those games, that doesn’t mean that or that means that they’re not getting a lot of pressure on him and Herbert’s going to dice him up here. Um if if the Chargers are able to score anywhere near 30 points, I think it’s a bad showing for VJ and uh that that seat might get a little might be getting a little hot here. Oo, you’re already going there, huh? Well, I I’m just saying if they can’t turn this trend around again, it’s been what is was it four games I gave examples of or five? Four. The last four road games have not been pretty for this defense. So, you can’t make that a fifth game in a row. No. And especially going back to the Stakes that we talked about last time. All right. Broncos Chargers. What’s your pick? Or do you want me to go first? I’ll give you the choice. Uh, I have mine written down here, so I’ll just go for it. Okay, do it. 26 24 Broncos. You’re you’re you’re you’re going Broncos. I’m going to go Broncos, too. I’m going to be a believer this week. 23 to 20. I think it’s going to be close. I think it’s going to be Oh, that low scoring, though. Yeah, I do. I think I think both defenses are are going to be are going to be up for the challenge. 23 to 20 Broncos get the win in a field goal battle. Five field goals between the two teams. All right. What about the Buffs? What about the Rams? Do they have enough this week? We’ll find out. We’ll discuss next. Buffs and the Cowboys of Wyoming before we next couple weeks once you’re dead dead like let’s not next couple weeks once you’re dead dead like let’s not once if you get to the point where the season is over. um not like act like literally over, but they’re you’re two seven or something like that, then you throw Guju out there, get him some reps. But as long as you’re in contention to go 500 still, um yeah, I I would play Salter. Uh and again, I I liked what I I Salter was fine against Georgia Tech, but he just needs to run the ball more. He’s an athlete. Let him use that athleticism. Let him use the speed. You try to use him as a pocket passer, and you still almost won the game. So, if you use him the way he’s supposed to be utilized, uh, I think they have a good chance of running away with it tomorrow. Yeah. How confident are you, though, with Pat Shurmer to do that. I I don’t I don’t have a lot. I got to be honest. I just I I don’t see a lot of creativity. I don’t I don’t see the things that you just talked about. Well, I don’t think he was that far off. I actually liked a handful of the passing plays they used. I just think they they tried to make him dissect the defense with his arm where if you let him get out and scramble a little more or, you know, let him tell him, you know, in the game plan like, “Hey, if you don’t see something, get out and run. Go out.” It doesn’t have to be a designed run necessarily, but just kind of inspire him to use his legs a little more on those broken plays. I think that uh game against Georgia Tech could have gone the other way. Wyoming comes in averaging 15 and a half points per game. That’s one of the lower totals in the Mountain West. It’s like fourth fourth lowest, fifth lowest, something like that. It’s not it’s obviously not prolific by any stretch. Dante, I ask you, can the Buffs defense dominate? And if they don’t, does your concern level rise even more? Yeah, I would say if Wyoming scores even 20 points, that would be concerning for me. I think Yeah, I’m with you. I would say 17 or less, I would feel good about this defense. And then if we’re talking 10 or less, I would start feeling like really good about this defense. But I think anything 17ish sounds perfect for this kind of game. Yeah. And I don’t want to dismiss Wyoming. I mean, this is a group that’s going to be motivated, that’s going to be tough, that is going to come down and feel like they have a shot to beat the Buffs in Boulder. That there’s zero doubt about any of that. But I want to see if the Buffs are going to rise to that challenge after, let’s be honest, a game against Houston that was not good. And I’m being kind. Yeah, I know you’ve got your eyes wide open. Like, let’s be a little a little more explicit than that. That that that was a rough rough game. I don’t care if it’s Wyoming or Alabama or or who it is. I got to see some fire out of the Buffs. I didn’t see that against Houston at all. And I’m hoping that Salter now can can sort of re reignite and settle in as the starting quarterback. I I thought I thought coach Prime maybe got away from him a little bit too early in the last two games. Yeah, I thought the leash was a little too short. Yeah. Um maybe he was expecting Salter to pick up where Shadur left and that’s not what happened obviously. So I think I think if you give Salter the proper amount of time I think Salter is going to go I think this buff team might score 3540 points tomorrow. I expect them to. though. I I think he’s going to prove why he’ll be the quarterback the rest of the season tomorrow or yeah, tomorrow night. Rams got a bye-week after the interesting one against Northern Colorado. Rams win and do the Buffs win? What are your picks? Uh Buffs win. I’ll go 42-10. Okay, big one. And then the Rams, remind me who’s home in that game again? That’s a CSU home game. It is at CSU. I like CSU then. I like They’re a home dog. Are they? Okay. Yeah, I I’ll go CSU by a touchdown. I think the Rams bounce back, too. I think they’re prime for that. It’s bad bad game against UNCC, but like to think the Rams aren’t that team. And I I picked the Buffs to win, too. I I’ll I’ll pick it 31 31 to9. A lot of fun as always. Absolutely. Mike, you ready for Sunday? You ready for tomorrow? Oh, I’m ready for both days. And let’s hope that on Monday we come back and can be like, “Look how good we were at our predictions Friday.” And to close it out, going back to the very first question we had at, what about a high school game, someone on the ramosaw.com’s text line suggested Grand View against Rock Canyon.
