WHY JOHN GIBSON IS THE PERFECT GOALIE FOR THE DETROIT RED WINGS
[Music] There’s a weird subliminal psychological link, I would say, between the Detroit Red Wings fan base and one of the big additions that was added onto this team that I honestly feel like we haven’t been talking too much about because quite literally this is one of the most important players on the Detroit Red Wings. At least now he is. Today, I wanted to shine a spotlight on an article that was posted on Detroit Hockey Now by Kevin Allen yesterday on the 19th. It’ll be linked in the description down below if you want to read it yourself, but it goes over a bunch of comments from newly acquired Red Wings goalender John Gibson and how he feels the Red Wings pain. This is a really interesting read. And honestly, upon reading it myself, I kind of was like, “Huh, that’s really interesting.” I didn’t really think about John Gibson as the new goalender in the Red Wings organization. I didn’t really think about his similar path, I guess you could say. The similar tribulations that he has felt as a player in the National Hockey League that many players on the Detroit Red Wings have felt as well. John Gibson, of course, quite literally the new starting goalender for the Red Wings, is probably going to be a fairly important part of the season to be considering the fact that last year he had a 912 safe percentage in 29 games played. You can see here that Gibson has had some better days in the past. Some 920s, 926s. For example, 2017 18 he popped off 926 save percentage and 243 GAAA in 60 games. But the past few years with the Anaheim Ducks haven’t been all too great for Gibson. The team in front of him got worse and this most previous season he was plagued with injuries. Despite that though, his numbers were honestly really good. And I know for myself as somebody who would pick Gibson up every few weeks as a streamer in fantasy hockey, this guy was legit. If it wasn’t for the gosh darn injuries taking him out and the sudden emergence of Lucas Dostall with the Anaheim Ducks, John Gibson probably would have been the main starter with that team. Now he’s in Detroit, so of course things are going to be a little bit different. and it’s going to be Gibson and Talbot while we wait for Kosa and Augustine. That’s sort of what I think fans are expecting in net over the next few years. But this article by Kevin Allen dives into John Gibson’s psyche, how he feels heading into this upcoming campaign. Because if you had noticed looking at Gibson’s numbers and his record, this guy hasn’t played a playoff game in the National Hockey League in 7 years. The last game he played was in 2018. He didn’t have a great playoffs that season, 889 save percentage in four games and a 360 goals against average as the Anaheim Ducks ended up getting swept in the first round by the San Jose Sharks. Yeah, there was a time when the Sharks were good just seven years ago, folks. Anaheim unfortunately got swept and Gibson played all of the games. But this article by Kevin Allen dives into how Gibson feels now. Take a look at this. He talks about how he was spoiled earlier in his career when the Anaheim Ducks continually made the playoffs. My first five or 6 years, we were expecting to win the division. There was no thought to even missing the playoffs. It’s eyeopening. And you look back and being a young player going through all that, you always wondered to yourself, did you miss an opportunity? Did you take it for granted? I think it makes you appreciate when you make the playoffs a lot more. Being in a drought like he’s been in and being hungry to get back. This is the reason why Kevin Allen writes that his background makes him the ideal candidate to help the Red Wings escape their ugly playoff slump. Gibson understands what the Red Wings are enduring. He wants to return to the playoffs as much as they do. I think everybody’s going into the season with the same goal and it’s an exciting time to be here. Gibson said according to the oddsmakers, the Red Wings are unlikely to make the playoffs, but if they are to have a chance, Gibson might be at the heart of it. His career 911 save percentage in theory could create the extra wins they need. Now, I wanted to talk a little bit about that in particular because yes, it’s true a lot of analysts and I guess maybe predictions, models, betting odds wouldn’t really have the Red Wings in a super high spot to making the dance. You kind of have to think about it like, okay, well, who’s dropping out to open up a spot for the Red Wings to get in? Like, is Montreal not going to make it? How are they looking? How are some of the other teams around the Atlantic looking in the top three? Boston, they already fell off. What’s Ottawa up to? Stuff like that. You kind of have to rationalize it to yourself. And for the Red Wings, there isn’t really a guaranteed path into making the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2026. They just got to win as much as they can and try to force their hand at it. However, John Gibson was a part of so many meh to really bad Anaheim Ducks teams over the past few years that if there’s anybody that’s probably a lot more determined to forcing his hand in doing everything he can to put his team back into the dance, it’s probably him, right? Add to that Dylan Larkin and his drought, which has extended even further beyond John Gibson’s. He’s the longest tenur Redwing after all. You’d probably assume that Patty Kane wants to get back into the dance after everything he’s been through in his illustrious career. He wants to help this team out. He’s committed to it over the past few years after all. And now John Gibson and Net could be the perfect guy talent-wise and mentalitywise to be a part of that shift. This article also talks about how Gibson likes what he is seeing with the Detroit Red Wings. I think there’s a really good mix of players. You’ve got the skilled forward, smaller guys, you’ve got some big power forwards, speed, size. I mean, the D, you’ve got skill and size. So, I think it’s just about making sure everyone’s on the same page and playing together. In the NHL these days, several teams seem committed to keeping goalenders from making too many starts. But while Gibson would tolerate a tandem setup, he sounds like he wants to be a number one. I train all season, offseason, in the summer to make sure I’m in the best shape to play as many games as possible. Gibson said, “I feel like in the past when I can kind of get in the groove is when I’m playing games, but nothing’s given. You got to earn everything. So, just going to come here and play my game, not trying to change anything and hopefully help the team win as many games as I can.” So for John Gibson, a player who at some point throughout his NHL career was a consistent 50 plus game per year goalie, he only got slowed down in 23-24 because of as we had said the emergence of Lucas Dstall and he also had the injuries that were hurting him too this previous year. But Gibson has had a very good track record in the National Hockey League. He debuted when the Anaheim Ducks were hot. He had some really good years opening up his NHL career and now he’s got a chance to reinvent himself in the same way that Patty Kane has after having all those successful seasons with Chicago. For the most part, I think Kane’s been pretty good. Now, as for how this is going to work in tandem with Cam Talbot, we’ll see. Talbot, of course, was a starter in his own right for the LA Kings as far back as just a season ago before his Red Wings campaign. And he was pretty all right the past few years, too. Consistent 910 plus save percentages up until a bad year in Ottawa, jumping back to a 913 with the Kings in 23-24 and then having a 901 with the Wings the most previous campaign. Talbet has made the playoffs a lot over the past few years. He’s got so many games played in the dance there. So, I think he doesn’t necessarily have that same personal mental mountain to climb in regards to getting over that hump and making it back in like Gibson does. That’s not to discredit Cam Talbot. I mean, he could have the strongest mentality of players on the Red Wings for all I care, but I’m just saying that him making the playoffs so much is totally not the same as what Gibson has gone through. And so now, John Gibson being at the helm, this could be the perfect guy to help bring the Red Wings back into the postseason dance. And I want you to let me know your thoughts in the comments section. How that makes you feel? John Gibson is poised to being the new guy he wants to be a number one. Do you think he’ll be able to accomplish that? Do you think he’ll get injured again? Do you think everything is going to go right, wrong, somewhere in the middle? Do the wings make the dance ultimately? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. If you enjoyed this video, leave a rating. Also, leave a comment. As long as he doesn't have the worst statistical season of his career, we will be better than last year. IMO
Honestly I think if he's able to sustain a 50+ starts it will be perfect because Talbot is really Old now and I would'nt be confortable to run him more than 30-35 ich games.
Wings last place.
I think what will be most important for Gibson to provide the most impact is consistency, which is something the Wings have lacked from their goaltenders the past few years. Talbot totally cratered after the 4 Nations break, which may have contributed to them missing the playoffs. If Gibson can "steal" at least 3 games and help their PK beyond what the goaltending provided last year then those extra 6 points could get them in the playoffs.
Btw, it's interesting how reporters can skew what the players say to fit their own narrative. I watched the full interview with Gibson on Day 1 of camp and he was definitely more nonchalant about how many starts he wants this year. Kevin Allen started by asking him if he wants 50+ starts, then you see what Gibson said, which is he prepares himself to start a lot of games but doesn't have any expectations for how many starts he'll actually get. Kevin Allen + Helene St. James need to go as DRW beat reporters because after listening to them in way too many interviews now they are always asking leading questions to push their agendas and uneducated opinions. Max Bultman of The Athletic wrote a much better article on Gibson today
John Gibson, Mackenzie Blackwood and Connor Ingram were who I routinely picked up as a third goalie in Fantasy over the last three years. They routinely got shelled, so giving up five goals didn't matter. They were point producing machines.
i’m excited for this season. I don’t think the Wings are going to be amazing but i really want to see how the team does compared to last season. I like watching the development stuff.
i want to see Gibson have a good year. If they can tighten things up on defense a little better that should give Gibson a real good chance to have a year he can proud of.
