Oakland Athletics vs Pittsburgh Pirates – MLB 9/20/25 Full Game Highlights (MLB The Show 25 Sim)
sandwiched between Maseroski Way and the Roberto Clemente Bridge. Welcome to PNC Park. Inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the athletics going up against the Pittsburgh Pirates. First pitch coming your way next. So just about set now and on the mound for the Pirates Paul Steingy. He’s been outstanding and should be fun to watch. Well, it’s all about the strikeout for him. Over 200 punches this season. Expect to see a lot of swings and misses today. Ready to go. And now here’s the A’s catcher, Shay Langalers. And that misses. And this one is off and running. Up and in. And now two and 0. Two balls. No strikes. Just missed. that catches the top part of the zone and now three and one and that is out of play and a 3-2 fouled off and they’ll do it again. stays alive. Strike three. Steen says sit down. Jacob Wilson up next for the A’s. The shorts stop takes the ball. One out. Base is empty. Hammers that one deep left field and forget it. He’ll circle the bases. His 14th of the year. The Athletics score first. It’s one- nothing. So, Singy, this is a little bit of a surprise. A guy known for line drives going over the fence. Well, if you’re a little too early, you’ll get some elevation in the ball. Get out of the ballpark. For him, it’s kind of a mistake. But, you know what? When you have such a good approach, every now and then you’re going to run into one. Nick Curts up next for the A’s. Definitely scuffling at the dish lately. Barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month. Swinging a foul straight back. Skins. He’s a guy that has both swing and miss stuff and exceptional command. I mean, that’s a rare combination that makes him one of the best in the game. Next pitch misses inside. One and one. And if you’re a hitter, you know that he’s going to challenge you, right? Yeah. You expect that. And that’s why I think you go up there, you get three strikes, you take your hats. And this is from a guy who like to swing it, you swing the bat. Takes it to the bag, steps on first, and it’s out number two. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. And Chris, this group has been struggling to put up runs lately. Well, they haven’t been on base a ton and even when they are, they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base. So, they need a player or two to really step up, have some quality at bats, hit according to the situation, and sort of break out of this. I think if they do, the rest of this lineup will follow. Brent Rooker stands in here, takes ball one low. Next offering is fouled back. Two out. Space is empty. And that’s in the dirt. So many strikeout guys do have trouble with walks because usually the strikeout is tied in to the stuff and sometimes the stuff is difficult to command. Not the case here. swaying and a miss. Struck him out. Out number three. But they’re off to a good start as they pick up a run on this solo shot. It’s an early one- nothing lead. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here at PNC Park and on the mound in this one, Jeffrey Springs. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Jared Triolo, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Springs, a 63 lefty, 220 lbs, and they went out and made a trade for him last season. 2 and 0. [Music] And another ball. [Applause] Next offering in there for a strike and the count is three and one. Up the middle. Schuman on the run. Sends it over to first and he gets him. Nicely done. Here’s a Pirates lineup now. Finding themselves down a run early. They’d like to punch back here with a run of their own. Absolutely, Boo. But I don’t expect them to change their approach because of that run. They still want to put together strong at bats. Be patient out there and get a feel for this starting pitcher. Spencer Horowitz, the next pirate to hit. Big swing and a miss. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge. just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track to third. Boots it man at first. Brian Reynolds here. First pitch misses. Horowitz leads off first with one away. Fought off foul. [Music] That one just misses. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming man at first. One away. Hit in the air. Left field. Rooker. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. Chris, he’s definitely going to finish the year with a new careerhigh in homers. We just don’t know how many he’s going to hit quite yet. And there’s a strike of the outside corner. It’s 0 and one. And there’s the strike. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. So one left for Pittsburgh and it remains one- nothing. Back here in Pittsburgh, here’s the rookie right fielder number 32. Skines back to work and that is in for a strike. 4-1. Cold night like tonight, last thing you want to do as a hitter is get jammed or even off the end. Trying to find that sweet spot on the bat. Tell you what, you’re going to be trying to catch things out front. So, off speed pitches may be a good complement to that fast. Ed Drummond, our umpire behind the plate in this one. Yeah, Boo. He’s a really fair umpire. Both the pitchers and the hitters. So, standard strike zone. He’s consistent with it. And the great thing is you don’t see players question the calls too much. So that’s a good thing in this day and age. Slaying a miss at 100 struck him out. Well, I’ve always said it’s tough a elevated fast you see so well hard to lay off of. Well, when you’re talking about 100 milesPH, chances of catching up are next to none. So you see that one just blown right by him. I think you’re going to have to start a lot earlier if you’re going to catch up to that speed. Swanging a highf fly ball in the air left field. This one’s got a chance. Got all of that one. A laser to left. Third home run of the season and they add to their lead. It’s two nothing. Most times it’s the pitcher looking at the scoreboard for velocity, but in this case it’s the hitter. He just turned around triple digits at the dish. I don’t even know how he saw that pitch. Maybe he didn’t, but he got a home run out of it. And now Brett Harris high in the air out to right and it’s caught for the out. Two down, base is empty. Here’s the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Two down, base is empty, but one run across here in the top of the second. [Music] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. A solo homer adds to the A’s lead and it’s two zip. Back after this on the show. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the second and the batter will be the shortstop Nick Gonzalez. Gonzalez. And a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff, so he’s going to have to work efficiently. [Music] A short stop takes the ball. Just misses with that one. sets him down on strikes. That was pretty nasty. Jack Sinski, the next pirate to hit and the first pitch misses for ball one. swing and a ball lifted left field. Rooker snags it for the second out. Two outs, space is empty. So, next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Nick York. And that closes the inside corner. And that one fouled off. That missed by a lot. It’s a ball in two strikes. O2 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. Two down. Nobody on. Up and in. Two balls, two strikes. the count. Swang and a miss. Struck him out. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing here this half. We head on down to the top of the third. It’s the A’s two and the Pirates nothing. onto the third inning. Now it’s the second baseman, Max Schum. Pitch misses there. One and0. [Music] Swang and a miss. There’s the change up. Doubled up on the off speed there. We talk about the power fast ball, but he’s working a little differently here. Next pitch misses. Two and two. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Fights it off. He’ll see another swing and a miss and he struck him out. Now five strikeouts for him on the mound. Well, that high fourseam fast ball, it’s become such a staple as a strikeout pitch over the years. And what’s so tough as a hitter is that you see it extremely well. The problem is the velocity at spin rate just happens to jump by you. You expand your zone, you don’t stay tall on the backside, and you’re really not even able to make contact. If you do many times it’s a popup a little bit high maybe at one and one just missing off the plate there according to the umpire and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation can’t say he’s convinced but it looks like he’s accepted it. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Backto back strikeouts to start the frame and that’s now three in a row. Yeah, he’s really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches, throwing them where he wants to right now. So we’ll see how long he can keep this streak going. Wilson at the plate with two away. Swings through that one. That’s not even close to the zone. 101 catches the top of the zone for a strike. Twins and misses. It’s a strike out. And he strikes out the side in the third. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. And welcome back to the ballpark as we go to the last of the third. At the plate for Pittsburgh, Alexander Canario, just missed. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. [Music] Hard hit left side gets it to first. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. Catcher Henry Davis. And now the catcher comes up to him. Henry Davis. And action in there for strike one and ball one. One and one. in the air to left down the line. Rooker sizing this one up. Nabs it. Two down. Batting. So the Pirates batting order turns over and now the Pirates leadoff man Jared Triolo 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. and takes low for ball one. Ball one. No strikes. He was late there. Strike one. I got one ball, one strike. Next offering pop foul off to the right out of play. Two outs. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And one, two, three go the Pirates. They’re still down. It’s two zip. Back here at PNC Park. And now the first baseman, Nick Kurts. That one finds the corner and it’s all in one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. That one pushed foul [Music] outside low and the count is one and two. ball. Two strikes the count. [Music] Foul ball left side. He’ll see another swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one away. Brent Rooker getting ready to hit. Struck out swinging his first time. That is upstairs for ball one. Base is empty. One away. Top half of inning number four outside and the count is 2 and 0. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 20. He’s put himself in a really good spot. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Two balls, one strike. [Music] That one fouled off. Two and two. [Music] popped up first base side. Davis has a beat on it. Out number two. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Two down, base is empty. And now the right fielder. His first at bat was a strikeout. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. And he blows that one by him at 100. He can live up in the zone all game if hitters will chase it. That’s just too much velocity. Hitters got to look down in the zone. Next pitch is outside. That one missed [Music] and it’s filled up. Knocks that one away and will do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up outside and that is ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. High-fly ball out to center field and makes the grab and that’ll do it. The A’s strand one, but they hold the two nothing lead. Back here in Pittsburgh now, the number two hitter, Spencer Horowitz. Oh, look at the stop. Takes it himself and he got him. Nicely done at first for the out. Brian Reynolds. Brian Reynolds now at the plate. Fly to left his first time. Reynolds in his sixth season, 30 years old now, and he’s usually in the outfield. Today, he’s the DH. Swang and a miss. That’s strike one. Oh, and one late swing fouled off. Got to be careful here. This is the type of hitter that can punish you even with pitches outside the zone. And now one and two. The Pirates trailing by two. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. He goes down looking. Well, he froze him with a great fast ball right on the corner. It’s kind of like bowling when you think the ball’s going to get into the gutter and somehow just hangs onto that edge and knocks down a pin. Well, he got the outside corner of the plate and got that called third strike. Next to bat will be the Pittsburgh cleanup hitter O’Neal Cruz. There’s the strike of the knees. And that’s in for a strike. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. [Music] That one missing inside. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. In the air pretty deep out to center field. Butler settles underneath it, makes the play, and it’s out number three. And we’re back. New inning getting started now. The third baseman, Brett Harris. Skins back to work. Swing and a miss. Wow, that’s 89 on the gun. And it’s a change up. It’s like good hitting if you’re looking for it, but because of the speed differential between the fast ball and that pitch, really hard for a hitter to get on time with it. Going to count one and two. One ball, two strikes to count. [Music] swings through it and that’s a strike out. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. The batter now Lawrence Butler struck out swinging his first time. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. Right through there for a strike. One ball, one strike. Swings through that one for strike two. No, there’s a pitch we haven’t seen in a while. It’s going to be tough on the hitters if he can mix that in whenever he wants. Went with the sweeper, but it misses. [Music] [Music] Pirates. This one popped up. Gonzalez makes his way towards it. Nice grab as he reached down to make the play. Two outs, space is empty. Here’s the second base, Max Schuman. He struck out swinging at his first at that one in triple digits. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Reaches over the wall and he’s got it. A’s go quickly and quietly there, but they’re on top two nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the shorts stop. Nick Gonzalez. Gonzalez. [Applause] Yeah, that’s outside. And that’s ball one. You know, these Pirates just aren’t putting together very many good at bats in this one. Just one base runner to this point. And it’s not exactly early anymore. They have guys in this lineup capable of sparking something, but it just hasn’t happened for him yet. And he takes the strike. And the slider just misses. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with. struck him out looking with the off speed stuff. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catch are on the same page right now. Jack Sinski, the next Pirate to hit. Fouled off left side. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, he’s on a great run of strikeouts and showing excellent control and command, not walking opposing batters. You know, this offense, they’ve got to find a way to break his rhythm. Put the bat on the ball, maybe try to bunt for a base hit, get him off the mound, moving around, step out, something to interrupt his timing because he’s coming right after these guys. And stepping in is the speedy Nick York. Ball one there. Come on. Ripped to third but handled. And that’ll end the inning. Nothing doing here for Pittsburgh. They trail things here. Two nothing. Top of the sixth inning. Now it’s the power speed combo. Shay Langalers. swings through that one out in front that time. Fast ball for a strike. That’s too low. And count one and two. Got him looking. That’s his ninth strike out so far. Well, they’ve had a great plan of attack for him tonight. I mean, finding all the holes in his swing and his approach, just frustrating for him up there. You strike out a guy three times in a game, I think that guy’s got to go back and really study some video with his hitting coach, figure out how they’re beating him, make this adjustment really quick, cuz Word will get around the league in a hurry. And that’s a little bit high. swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. Nick Curts up next for the A’s. hurts. A guy who’s really opened up some eyes in his first major league season, hoping to finish strong in September, too. Very high with that one. Ball one. Bullpen action for the Pirates. Number 47 appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Burrows getting cranked up as well. And now two and one. [Music] Way high. Good purpose pitch right there. Trying to tease him. get him to raise his sights, pop something up and make it an easy out and a swing to miss. Man, that’s just a nasty splitter. Bottom falls out of it. You don’t see a lot of guys throw that these days, but I tell you what, he’s got a good one. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Pitch count’s getting up there now. And not saying that’s the reason for this walk, but this is the point in the game when every side of wavering starts to get everyone’s attention. Rooker batting with one down, takes the strike. Some hitters are just more confident if they can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher. They don’t care if they fall behind 01. The A’s looking to add another swing and a miss and he got him to chase. Talk about tying a guy up. That was ugly. Two on, one out. And it finds its way through for a hit. Throw back in. Holds the runner at third. Base is now loaded. Only one away. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count. Up against it with two strikes right there. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way. And it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box. Got a pitch he liked and he got it done. Now the base is loaded. Big opportunity for them to break this game open. On the mound now for the Pirates, Mike Burroughs. And he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one in innings, so he’ll be tough to get to. So bases all loaded up now. It’s the right fielder. Golden opportunity right here. That’s outside. Ball one. [Music] All loaded up. And we’re the top half of the sixth. And that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. A little out front there as he swings through it. One ball, two straight. The change up missing and the count is even. Two and two. Way to lay off that pitch down to third. Might be two. Good feed. That’s one. And that’s quick work out of the pen. One batter. Two outs in and over. Just trying to sneak one through with the bases loaded. But an excellent job by the defense to turn that one and get out of this jam. Well, we go bottom six. Now it’s Alexander Canario. Alexander Canario. Right through there for a strike. And there’s a foul ball. [Music] Here’s the O2 into center. That one gets down for a hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. And here’s the catcher, Henry Davis. Fly to left his first time. [Applause] out of bounds right side on a second. They get one back to the pitcher covering in time. It’s a double play. The 361 double play in my opinion is one of the toughest plays to make. You’ve got a pitcher covering first and the middle infielder throwing to a moving target. Everything has to be perfect. And right there they made it look pretty easy. Here’s the third baseman Jared Triolo for two in this one. There’s a swing in a miss. Well, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning. Anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. And now it’s even up. Pretty frugal guy. He is very efficient with the pitch count in this one. The Athletics up by two here in the bottom of the six. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. That’s back there. That’s not coming back. his seventh home run of the season and they’re on the scoreboard. It’s 2-1. He just sent a jolt of electricity into this stadium with that swing. That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. Crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. Two outs, nobody on. Spencer Horwitz digs in now and ball one. Swinging a foul out of play. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at in a one count. Just not able to square it up. Next one is off the plate and it’s two and one. [Music] Out to center. He’s got it. And that’ll end the inning. Bucks draw a bit closer on this long ball. And this is now a 2-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. We go to the top of the seventh. Now it’s the DH. Daryl Hernese Burrows in his rookie season. He features a four seam fast, a change up, a slider, a curve, and he works in a sinker. That one a 95 missed up top. Two and O. And that one is inside. Next offering in there for a strike. Three and one. Backto-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. And that one pulled foul. [Music] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Foul ball and it remains a full count and the right-hander deals down the left field line. Base hit. So he ends up with a hit after seeing a lot of pitches. That was a good at bat. Fred Harris will hit next in the air. Foul off first. Makes the catch and there’s one away. Next up for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. knee high. That’s in for a strike. There’s a strike. A’s leading by a run. And there’s a hit. They get it in quickly. So, first and second now, one out. Max Schuman the next to hit. Oh, bottom of the order here. Boog. You got to go right after this guy as they look to pick up an add-on run. And the number nine guy at the plate. You can do it. That one is absolutely belted and it one hops the wall. One runs in. Now the second run is in and they take a threerun lead. Big one there as he drives in a couple of runs. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. And the Pirates manager making his way to the mound now as he will make the move. Mike Burroughs will depart. It’s a three-run game. And we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Pirates with a new arm on the mound. Number 47. And this could be a pretty critical point in this game. They’re hoping he’s the guy to keep him within striking distance. And now a chance for Shay Langelers. Pitch misses inside. One and0 [Music] just still only one out here in the inning. misses off the inside and that’s ball three. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Next pitch in for a strike. Full countdown. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. Throw to second save and ball four to a board. Well, he took his chance at getting him to chase right there. But with first base open, walk not a bad thing. He set up a double play opportunity if he can induce a ground ball. Jacob Wilson getting ready to hit and that one is lifted in the air. Canario calls it in. Two away. Number 16. And a dangerous hitter coming to the plate. And here’s the first baseman, Nick Curts. This one lifted in the air left field. Sinsky on his way over. Brings it in. And that is that. But they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double. It’s now a 4-1 ball game. You’re dialed into the show back here at PNC Park. And now the DH, Brian Reynolds. This pitcher has done a good job of disrupting the hitter’s timing with the mix of pitches and changing speeds. You want to keep that front foot inconsistent for the batter. Their swings are hesitant and that’s exactly what you want on the mound. Changing speeds has this lineup completely off balance in this one. We’ve seen a lot of miss time swings and it’s been a challenge for these hitters to get their rhythm right. and one and two straight. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Mason Barnett appears to be getting loose. Number 49 also throwing swing and a ball lifted in the air. shallow left field and it drops in. Had a good start to the inning. Well, he didn’t get much of that one, but it’s going to look like a line drive in the box score tomorrow. That was a nice change up. Good location and it did have him off balance at the plate. Just not quite enough to miss the bat completely. Somehow he punched it out there for the knock. O’Neal Cruz the next pirate to him. There’s a strike. If you’re going to get something going, this is the time to do it. You get the leadoff man on. Everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say, “I’m just going to keep the line moving.” Don’t try to do too much. Reynolds gets his lead at first with nobody out. [Music] And O’Neal is struck out. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breeds a sigh relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Nick Gonzalez, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Snap throw to first and he’s back in there inside. Just missed right through there for a strike. [Music] The one-1 is fouled off. The A’s leading by three here. The bottom of the seventh. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Right field. He just missed it. And there’s two away. Jackinski. Jack Sinski, the next pirate to hit. Pitch is in there. That’s strike one. Well, this looks like it’s going to be a wasted opportunities. Frustrating when you get the leadoff man on, but you can’t get him into scoring position. They’re going to need a big knock trying to put something up on the board. And there’s the ball. Well, it’s been a very impressive outing so far. His command has been a big part of it. Even when he misses, he misses outside the strike zone, which is exactly what a pitcher wants. Step off, throw to first, and he’s back in safely. I think you want to get a one-way lead. Be very aggressive in the secondary. This hitter, not a power guy, so you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps score the ball in the gap. a 2-1 and that one off the outside edge. Here’s an opportunity to do some damage and perhaps unlock this offense. 3-1 count. Be ready to turn on a fast ball. Headed towards the corner. And that is the third out of the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. Eighth inning. Coming up, it’s the Athletics four and the Pirates one. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Bubba Chandler. Definitely a guy that pounds the strike zone, makes hitters earn their way on base, and rarely gets in trouble because of free passes. Brent Rooker now at the plate, one for three, taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Ground ball up the middle on the run. Throw to first on the money. Nice play. Nowielder Thomas. And now the right fielder. Swing and a miss as he was out front. He really sells the change up with that arm action inside. One ball, one strike. Curve ball kind of backed up on him there. I think it just slid out of the hand a little bit too soon. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. One ball, two strike. Struck him out without a swing. Called strike three and a fast ball up in the zone. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. So now here’s the DH Daryl Hernese. He launched a solo shot back in the second inning of this one. Yeah, that was big for these guys early on. Definitely helped them get off on the right foot. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. And a curb misses outside. Ripped on the ground to second to first. The A’s go quietly and the A’s are gone in order, but they lead it four to one. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Mason Barnett. He’s making his fourth appearance of the season. Now it’s the second baseman, Nick York. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. on the inside corner for a strike. Well, in this one, the offense has sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving and manufacture at least one run. Then maybe you get two or three and it stays fair. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. Well, there’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Now, it’s the right fielder, Alexander Canario. And that one is in for a strike at 95 and one. [Music] on the ground of first. Could be two. There’s one and that is a rally killer. Two gone in the eight. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first baseman has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. Here’s the catcher, Henry Davis. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. 01’s the count. And that one clips the corner. No, this manager knows that his players are just trying to do too much. Everybody needs to just take a deep breath, relax, and let it naturally happen. swings and misses and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Bucks go down quietly and they trail it 4-1. Back here in Pittsburgh, we go to the ninth now. The third baseman, Brett Harris. Chandler back to work. Not close with that one and it’s one and0. Movement in the bullpen. Evan Cisk loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. Lawrence warming up as well. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. And a strike in there. [Music] Now a highf fly ball out to left center. Cruz sizes this one up. One up. One down. And now the center fielder Lawrence Butler. Swang and a miss as he was out front that time. One gets a check swing appeal to third. That’s a swing according to umpire Woody Keller. One down. Base is empty. Down and in. Moved his feet. had a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Two down, base is empty. Max Schuman up next for the A’s. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. One’s the count out towards right center. That’s well struck in one. Hops off the wall. Should be extra bases. He’s in with a double and that’s his second double of the night. Couple of hits in a row for him here. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. So runner at second, two down. And now the catcher comes up to hit. Shay Langalers 0 for three in this one. Strike on the inside corner. Swing it. A ball driven out to center. That one back off the batter’s eye and gone. And they boost their lead. It’s 6-1. And that shot makes their grip on the lead even tighter. With a low 90s fast ball, you have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient, waited for it. It was like BP all over again. Jacob Wilson up next for the A’s. He’s already homered in this game. Ball one, no strikes. in the air out towards right center. Cruz moving under it. He’s got it. And that is that. The A’s with a two-run blast. And this is now a 6-1 ball game. And we’re back. Here’s the third baseman, Jared Triolo. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So, when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. And first off is fouled off. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. And that just misses. That one called just inside, I think, and on the mound. He’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation. Doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it, though. But he clearly thought it clipped the corner. And that’s downstairs. Two and two. Two two count. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. That one just misses. Caught a break right there. Pretty good pitch on the outside corner. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. [Music] This one in the air center field. Butler under it and out number one on the grab. Spencer Horowitz the next pirate to hit. And there’s a fly ball deep right field. That’s back and it hits the fence. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in and that’s a twobagger. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Just missed out on a home run right there, but he certainly hit it hard enough. Just didn’t have the right launch angle to carry it over the wall, but still an excellent swing at the bat. Brian Reynolds the next pirate to hit. That clips the zone. Strike one. One out and a runner at second. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. ripped on a line to center. Butler pulls it down and there are two outs. Now batting center. [Music] Last chance now for the Pirates. Next it’s the Pirates cleanup hitter O’Neal Cruz. And that one sliced fouled. Ripped but a curls foul. Barnett is just one strike away. That one outside now one and two. Swung on, popped up on the infield. Harris, that’s the ball game. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save. 6-1 is your final here today. The A’s are victorious for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shavei saying so long.
