I revisited up on the 2008 Celtics and their "Big Three" of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen. It's crazy to think that they went from a 24 win team to a championship contender in a single offseason. Danny Ainge's move to get KG and Ray Ray completely changed the franchise. What's even more impressive is how they came together so quickly, embracing the "Ubuntu" philosophy and building an unbreakable bond. That team was an absolute defensive juggernaut, and it was so satisfying to see Paul Pierce, who had endured so many losing seasons, finally get his ring. It's a testament to how the right moves and the right mentality can change everything.

What do you think was more important to the Celtics' championship: the trades for Garnett and Allen or the team's "Ubuntu" mindset?

  1. Garnett was everything. He won MVP only a couple season prior, and playing with Pierce and Allen meant he could focus on his biggest strength, anchoring that defense.

I still remember the commercials that summer, conveying the absolute ecstasy C’s fans felt after landing KG. Equivalent of Lakers landing Luka, except if AD’s value was spread over 3-4 different players.

  2. Sometimes the pieces just fit. That was just the universe aligning perfectly. If only for a year

  3. Kevin Garnett IMO was the greatest talent of the 2000s. Better than Duncan, Kobe, Dirk, or Nash. An insane mix of physical talent and skill, with a matching work ethic and intensity to boot.

Having two perennial all-star scorers to play with you unleashed a defensive nightmare.

  4. Ainge did a great job filling out the roster. James Posey was an awesome sixth man for two years. Eddie House was a great complement to Rondo. And then all of the vets who showed up.
