ASTROS POSTCAST: Houston Astros Get Swept Out By Seattle Mariners In Most Important Series Of Season

This is the Astros Post Cast, your instant game reaction for the Houston Astros, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. [Music] Well, the Astros started off the home stand the absolute best way that they could by sweeping the Texas Rangers. the most important home stand of the season to determine the ALO West, check off box number one, and then go and do the exact opposite in the following series in what is without a doubt the most important series of the season, and you can almost certainly kiss away the American League West now after they have been swept by the Seattle Mariners. Hello and welcome tonight to the Locked on Astros postcast. I am Michael Connor. Thank you for stopping by. If you’re watching live, if you’re watching it later on, we appreciate you. Well, there’s a lot of things to talk about, but from this one, what’s the number one thing you’re going to be talking about? This is what you’ll be talking about. I think the biggest thing from this is that once again, this team overall unreliable when they need to be great. You know, they’ve had insanely difficult circumstances in a lot of areas throughout the season. Injuries have been absolutely horrific for this team. Happened again tonight. Jeremy Pñena scratching the lineup. Oblique issue. You know, I’m sure he’s probably going to try to give it a go the last six games, but obliques are weird. You never know. You know, then Yordon going out. You get Pedis back who finally hits a home run, but he had a horrible weekend overall. You know, you just can’t expect a lot for a guy sat for months rehabbing a hamstring that was basically all all this. We know the circumstances. I’m not going to sit here and run through the circumstances over and over and over again with this baseball team. They’ve had a lot of terrible luck when it comes to health this year. But what they haven’t had bad luck with is their inability to play big when they need to be big the most. And they just haven’t done it. And the second half of this season has been overall a horrendous experience. I’m not going to lie to you. I’ve not had a lot of fun watching them most nights and I think a lot of you guys are probably the same way. You know, they’re they’re trying their their hardest to hold on to a playoff spot and we’ve had this discussion recently. You know, they’ve got six games to secure the the wild card because I I’m going to say it tonight for me. I mean, I don’t see that Seattle team going out and choking away the West in the last week. I would like to say congratulations to the city of Seattle for finally getting over the hump on the Astros and finally getting over the hump on winning the ALO. It’s been a long time for them. They got the Rockies for three over the next three days. They’ll probably secure the ALS that then and they’re going to do that at home and then they’ll finish with the Dodgers. So, yeah, that’s a little bit more difficult for them, but I just don’t see a scenario where the Astros are, you know, making this happen. I think the real question from tonight is is this the start of the end of this era. You know, that’s what you have to to wonder about. I don’t think that they’re going to just, you know, close up shop and not try to win again next year. I think they’re going to come back with a lot of the same guys. You know, they’ll try again. But I think all of the things that are wrong with this team are all of the things that are wrong with this organization as a whole. And we’ve seen it. They’ve tried to band-aid so much and they’ve been reactive too often instead of proactive. And it’s caught up with them and there’s no other way around it. If they are going to do things next season, it’s going to take a lot of rebooting. But we’re not going to get to completely completely to next season until the season ends. But as of now, you know, it’s getting to the point where you do have to wonder if the playoff the postseason run of consecutive seasons going to the postseason is about to end. They just don’t have enough. a and short series and I can’t say anything def let’s just play the scenario right now that this team gets in and is the the final wildcard team and at the moment would go on and play the Detroit Tigers um in that first round who by the way have been horrible as well they’re are falling apart too but they’d go to Detroit play them again you could absolutely absolutely beat anybody for as as as dumb as this team has been this year. They can beat anybody in a best of three because anybody can beat anybody in a best of three. It just takes baseball is a silly sport where nothing is guaranteed in a very short series. Same goes for an ALDS where it’s best of five. Now, betting man right here, me on this team, I think this team’s going to go into a wild card round if they get in and they’re going to get beat out quickly. I could see it happening in two because they’re going to have to play this week where they’re fighting for their lives and they’re going to have to probably set their rotation up to where Hunter Brown’s not available to go game one in a wildcard round scenario. I want the three extra games. I I’ll take them. I’d rather be there than not. But I I had such a huge expectation for this weekend to take at least two out of three is what I was hopeful for. But I mean to me to really look at these games and to be overall kind of as as lifeless as you were, I think is the best way to put it in all three of these baseball games. And to really just get your teeth kind of kicked in. 4 nothing. Uh, you know, you’re down six nothing last night until Pñena hits a grand slam there late and then tonight to be down seven nothing early. Uh, there was never really any moment this weekend against that Seattle team where they looked like they had a chance. And again, you tip the cap, Seattle has played their best baseball. They have peaked at the right time of the year in the month of September. They have played their backsides off and this team, they’ve been trying their best to even just tread water over the last couple of months. That’s basically where they’ve been at. And again, a lot of the circumstances are health driven that have put them at this point. I get it. Doesn’t mean it’s any less frustrating. Doesn’t mean that I have to like it by any means. I can’t acknowledge the truth. And that is the truth in a lot of these circumstances. But the truth also is that when they have needed to be good and great and the team that this this franchise has been for 10 years now, they haven’t even come close to sniffing the bar that they have set for themselves as a franchise uh in this run. and they have put themselves into serious serious danger of not even making it to the postseason in 2025. A lot of self-reflection has to go on between now and Tuesday’s game and they have to play their best baseball of the season in these final six games. and they are going to do it against an opponent and or I should say two opponents that at least when you look at it very favorable for them to do that will they do it it’s a whole other question we’re going to take a look at that next series talk about the Cinderella story ending tonight for another as well a brief moment here on the locked on Astros postcast few messages before we get back to that discussion on the Stros episode’s brought to you Zipix toothpicks. When the Astros needed to get clutch, they did not get clutch and they lost the series in disgusting fashion to the Mariners. swept out at home. The final home series of the season kind of goes as fittingly as the 2025 season has been because I’ve said it many not that I’m not going to have like look at the end of the day I am happy to watch winning baseball. They have had a winning season. We all can. I think you have to take a step back in scenarios like this and remember that we had it better than anybody can have it in a sport for about an eight-year window. I It was silly what they did. Does not happen often. They probably should have won at least one more World Series. I always go back to that 2019 one and they coughed that one up. That team was the best team that they ever put out on a field and I don’t think it’s ever going to be beat. And you know, they probably should have won three, but they didn’t. They won two, they went to four, and they dominated the American League for years. We’re living in the life of normal baseball fans now where it is a struggle just to get there. It’s not a cakewalk like it was every year for us here in the city of Houston for that 8-year window. This is normal. It’s not easy. You can’t be perfect every year. You’re not loaded with the most talent every single year. I can go through the American League teams right now that are going to be in the postseason. And there’s massive flaws on all of them. You go back to a lot of those Astros teams made the postseason all year. There weren’t a lot of flaws like at all. Some like that 2019 team damn near perfect. The 2022 team about as perfect as it gets. You know, you go to the Blue Jays this year, they got bullpin issues. You got the Mariners, they’re still, you know, they got a lot of strikeout in that lineup. They’re beatable. If you have great pitching, they are beatable. Detroit, same kind of thing. Offense not unbelievable. Pitching’s not doing its thing. The Yankees, we know about the massive glaring holes that they can have in their lineup. Their pitching has got issues as well. The Red Sox are beyond beatable in a lot of areas. Pitching is the biggest one. Cleveland, same kind. It’s like I go look at the entire Everybody’s got big glaring holes. Astros got big glaring holes. Starting pitching injuries crushed them. They don’t have a lot of horses. Their second ace has turned into a complete big fat choke artist and they’ve got nothing at the top of the rotation outside of Hunter Brown right now at this moment. Bullpin fell apart. Can’t trust basically any of them. Arms fell off to the most important guys as well. It is what it is. That’s just where they’re at. And they could still get in. And I will say based on the schedule that is ahead this week playing the A’s and playing the Angels, it will be a disappointment to me if they don’t get in. I look at these games and say you are going to go four and two across the six on the road and four wins gets you to 88. I think that’s getting you in the postseason. And if they don’t, then guess what? The conversation we’ll be having Sunday afternoon when they get wrapped up late afternoon will be a lot different than the conversation we’re having right now. And we’ll be doing a lot of big talk on how you fix this and who’s held responsible and what kind of changes have to be made. You’re going to have that conversation no matter what, but it will be a different tone if they go out there on the road and don’t perform that way. And I shouldn’t sit here and say that I expect them to play that way out on the road based off the way that they’re playing right now this past weekend against the Seattle team. That’s brutal, man. Absolutely brutal. And you know, I want to shout out Jason Alexander. It was a great run for him, but you see it tonight. Um he’s a Cinderella story where the the it’s going to fall apart eventually. He just does not have the overall kind of stuff. If his peak if he is not like peak pinpoint all over the place, he’s not going to miss bats. And he left stuff middle freaking middle all night long. And then what do you know? Grand slam. Things got out of hand quickly. And the Mariners walk with an easy victory tonight over the Astros. They get the night off tomorrow. That’s the positive. You don’t have to watch them tomorrow night. They will be late this week. Um 9:05 starts for Tuesday and Wednesday in Sacramento against the A’s. Uh Thursday will be a 235 start. I will give you guys a heads up for Thursday. I think that the chances I’ll be able to pull off a Thursday show are slim and almost none. I will let you know. We will be here tomorrow night or excuse me, Tuesday night. We will be here uh Wednesday night. We’ll be here Friday night. We’ll be here Saturday night and we will be here Sunday as well. Um that one will be late enough I believe with Texans to work. I no matter what Sunday we’re going to do one um because it is the end of the season as well. Go forget about it. That’s about the only thing I can tell you tonight cuz I want to forget about it. Six games to go. Which team’s going to show up? Find out this week. We’ll talk about it on the locked on Astros post.

The Houston Astros could not afford to be swept by the Seattle Mariners over the weekend, but that is exactly what happened. Michael Connor breaks down the latest loss and what this means for their postseason chances on the Locked On Astros Postcast.

  1. It’s just Seattles year! They are having a magical season and their Pitching has been the weak link all year! If their starters show up Seattle could easily find themselves playing for a Championship

  2. We should’ve lost the division 2 months ago. The team just isn’t good this year. We’ve had a ton of fun over the last 8 years. Let Seattle have their fun. I’m rooting against them for sure but I don’t mind having one bad year in 8 years
