The Pittsburgh Steelers Get GOOD & BAD NEWS After Their Week 3 Win vs. The New England Patriots…

Welcome in to Steelers Talk. I’m your host, Jack Sperry. I’ve now had an opportunity to watch the Steelers versus Patriots game over uh for the second time outside of our live watch party. And I’ve got my list of three negatives for the Pittsburgh Steelers through the first three weeks that could be crippling weaknesses if they don’t be fixed uh as the season goes on. And then I’ve got a list of positives as well coming out of this uh first three game stretch. Uh because, you know, as much as people want to, you know, be doom and gloom and stuff like that on Steelers Twitter, um here on the show, we try to give you guys both the negative and the positive. Uh the stuff that’s uh we try to provide that nuance, all right? It’s not just all doomsday and it’s not just all um you know, sunshine and rainbows. We try to tell you guys the truth. We try to provide that nuance here on Steelers Talk. Um so, if you guys want that uh kind of coverage, that in-depth Steelers coverage every single day, click that subscribe button. We added almost 1,000 subscribers today on the live watch party. Thank you to everyone that watched. It was fantastic, guys. Um, can’t really uh thank you enough for all the support that you give to me, to Ponzi, our entire crew here on Steelers Talk. So, make sure you guys click that subscribe button if you haven’t already. Uh, if you want that in-depth coverage here on Steelers Talk every single day. All right, so first thing I want to talk about here is Jabril Peppers, who of course just got cut by the New England Patriots. He ends up signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. his first game playing for the Steelers um or at least you know where he’s getting significant defensive snaps is against his former team and uh to my eye he looked pretty darn good even on the second watch he’s looking pretty darn good. I’m looking looking forward to seeing the all 22 and seeing some of the things that uh the broadcast angle didn’t capture but um he got a game ball today in the locker room. Um, and you know, Aaron Rogers talked a little bit in his postgame press conference about how it’s nice uh for a teammate to beat his former team and show that former team that, you know, he can still play and Pepper said something similar in his postgame media availability uh saying that he really needed this one. And I’m just happy that the team was able to go out and get him that one. Um, of course Jawan Bentley um was not active today, still technically on the practice squad getting ramped up for a potential move to the active roster, but I’m sure it was nice for him. uh uh to get a victory today even though he didn’t play in the game itself. But yeah, I just wanted to start off today’s show by saying how happy I am for Jabril. Um how well he played. I think he’s really going to be a good player for this defense this year, guys. Um you know, of course, he forced a fumble. He was he was active in the run game. He’s a really good tackler and just think he’s a good football player. So, I’m glad that he’s here with the Pittsburgh Steelers. But I want to start today’s show here in terms of the negatives and positives with the bad news, the negatives here. Um because there are three things that are pretty darn concerning to me. And I think the first two things could be debilitating uh crippling weaknesses for the Pittsburgh Steelers this year if they do not get fixed. All right, the first one is pretty obvious. It’s the offensive line through through three weeks, man. They’re not creating any run lanes. They’re not they’re not pushing the line of scrimmage consistently enough. Uh they’re not protecting Aaron Rogers. You can tell Rogers is kind of got a little bit of pocket trauma right now for even somebody that’s seen uh pressure his entire career and he’s got really great pocket presence. Um, you know, you can tell that he is being pushed back uh because of the pressure that is heading his way and um, you know, just all five of these offensive linemen are consistently losing enough where, you know, it is very much a concern because this has been the unit that has held this team back now for a number of seasons going back to even, you know, the final years there during the Big Ben era. Um, and then, you know, when the picket era kind of started, it was the same thing under Matt Canada. Um, and then it continued last year under Arthur Smith with Russ and Fields. And now it’s continuing here with Aaron Rogers at quarterback. And you know, I said at the beginning of this season, the offensive line is going to be the X factor that decides whether or not this team can realistically win a Super Bowl because like if they can set up the run game, we know Jaylen Warren is good enough to be able to take advantage of that space. So, if the run game and the offensive line can create that space for the run game, that’s going to set up play action, which is going to open up this offense with Aaron Rogers and open up uh other opportunities for receivers and just make it more smooth. But, you know, when you have an offensive line like this where they can’t get any push at the line of scrimmage, you know, Jaylen Warren has to fight for his life to get just two yards and make it second down and eight. um you know, whenever you’re having penalties and you’re you’re getting behind the sticks and you’re getting into third and longs, um where Rogers has to throw the football, but it he can’t really throw it to any open receivers because the pressure is already getting in on him and he has to either throw it away or he has to throw it to a covered receiver or he has to take a sack. You know, like the offensive line is the thing that makes this offense go. And if it’s not good, then this offense is not going to be good. And if this offense isn’t good, you’re not going to be able to compete against the best teams in the league. So that is by far and away my number one concern at this point in the season. Now this is a young unit. They’re still learning how to play together. There is in theory a possibility here where they get better as the season goes on or maybe they trade for somebody at the trade deadline to help bolster this group and that’s kind of the missing piece that makes everything fall into place. Um but there’s also the possibility here guys and we have to acknowledge this that this offensive line just might stink for the entire season and Pat Meyer fails this unit again. Mike Tomlin fails this unit again. And despite having a second round pick at center, despite having first round picks at both tackle spots, despite having a fourth round pick at at right guard, you know, this unit might be debilitating for this team yet again. And uh that’s legitimately a possibility at this point. That is by far and away my biggest concern with the Pittsburgh Steelers as we sit here today. Number two negative that I want to talk about today that is a big concern of mine is the passing defense. All right. and we’ve been talking about it on the channel um giving quarterbacks too easy of answers. My solution being um do more rotating coverages u make things more difficult to decipher post snap for opposing quarterbacks because I mean we saw it today quite a bit as well again over the middle you know man coverage getting beat over the middle of the field with five men rushing meaning that there’s no intermediate middle defender and you know it’s just it’s just pitching catch for the opposing team and you know playing cover three and just giving them nine yards on a first down on an out route you that that’s the type of that just drives me crazy. There’s just too much of it. Um when when it comes to the defensive schematics and play calling from the Pittsburgh Steelers under Terrell Austin. So obviously it’s Mike Tomlin’s game plan, but Austin’s the one calling the plays. But like I think it’s pretty clear that over the last three weeks, these three quarterbacks, Justin Fields, Sam Darnold, and Drake May have all been able to move the football very effectively, especially on money downs, third downs and fourth downs. And I think, you know, when you get into that third down situation, um, you know, you kind of look for matchups and you look for advantages in terms of the defensive alignment. And I think that the Steelers are giving them too many easy answers in those types of situations. Um, whether it’s cover two and you’re playing off and you’re just giving them a super easy little window to just uh, hook in there and, you know, or whatever, or playing too much man when you don’t have your man corner, Joey Porter Jr. out there. It’s just it’s just not good enough, man. And again, I said it in the postgame show, the instant reaction earlier tonight. You know, you give up your 11th straight game of over 300 yards of offense. And it wasn’t because of the run game. We’ll talk about the run defense here in a while in a second that did a lot better today. It was the passing defense today. They couldn’t get it done. Pton Wilson gave up the second touchdown of the day today because he was supposed to be the middle defender in Tampa 2 and he decides to go into the hook curl instead. and it’s a big miscommunication and it’s a lack of execution on the part of Peyton Wilson. So once again, this is a lack of execution from this defense that’s supposed to be one of the best in the National Football League. So, you know, I think to be the best defense in the league, you have to have a high level of discipline. And right now, especially in the passing game, we have not seen that level of uh discipline from this unit. Did think, you know, there are certain areas where they did get better today. They didn’t give up as many like 20 plus yard receptions today as they have in the first two weeks, but certainly still giving up quite a few chunks. And I’m sure, you know, once we get the film, I’m going to be breaking down a lot of the things that went wrong uh with the Pittsburgh Steelers pass defense this week. Uh by far the best part about this pass defense was uh the pass rush, which we’ll talk about here in just a second. The third concern that I have is that I think the Steelers probably need another receiver. Um, you know, I came into the season kind of okay with the idea of letting Roman Wilson be kind of the, you know, give him a shot to see what he can do. You spent a high draft pick on him. It doesn’t make a ton of sense to just pretty much bench him by bringing in another veteran. But I think at this point, man, like there’s there’s there’s certain plays where you can tell Rogers has a lack of options. And I think part of that is Roman is just not getting open. He wasn’t on the field as much this week as he was last week, but um when he’s on the field, it just doesn’t seem like he’s making much of an impact. So um you know, if the Steelers have an opportunity to go out and get a wide receiver, whether that’s Chris Olive, the Saints absolutely stink right now. Maybe he demands a trade out before the deadline, whether that’s Tyreek Hill, certainly see him being moved with the Miami Dolphins starting 0 and3. um whether it’s someone else. Uh we’ll probably go over some options this week. Uh talking about pre-deadline wide receiver targets, but Calvin Austin has made some nice plays. I think that he is certainly a part of the solution at the wide receiver position. He’s getting open. Uh he’s making some big plays in clutch moments. He’s had a couple touchdowns. He’s tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns right now. So, he’s your wide receiver, too. But I think that, you know, you could maybe want to add another wide receiver here to make a legitimate wide receiver trio, which I don’t think the Steelers have right now. I think they’ve got two receivers that are legitimately starter quality. They’ve got some nice tight end pieces that they like to use, and you know, they pretty much just put Roman Wilnout there uh to do nothing. So, unless Roman turns it around pretty quickly here, I would be on the phones and I’d be searching if I’m if I’m Omar Khan, whether that’s Romeo Dos, whether that’s somebody else. Um, don’t know what the solution is to that, but certainly I think that the Steelers team could use uh a legitimate threat as a number three receiver. But with the negatives out of the way here, I I do want to talk about some of the positives because there are because there’s there is legitimately good things. And honestly, I have more positives than negatives coming out of these first three weeks. So, I think it’s important if we’re going to talk about the negatives, if we’re going to talk about the things that concern us, I also think it’s important to talk about the things that the Steelers are getting right because there are some things that they’re getting right. First thing, red zone offense. They should be seven for seven in red zone offense so far this season. Plain and simply. Um the reason why they’re not seven for seven is because of a mistake from Calvin Austin the third that we’ve talked about extensively breaking the the contain rules uh whatever you guys want to call it, the scramble drill rules and then tipping the ball up in the air when it would have been a touchdown. If it’s not for that, Steelers are seven for seven scoring touchdowns in the red zone. They were two for two today. Uh they did or they were three for three today, I should say. So really good stuff. Actually, I think they should be eight for eight. I think they’re seven for eight on the season right now. So, that’s really good stuff. Um Aaron Rogers and Arthur Smith seem to have a good plan in place. They’re getting it to Darnell Washington. They have a plan to get it to DK Medaf. They have a plan to get into the end zone. They’re doing a good job of that. So, that’s certainly encouraging. Now, we just got to get into the red zone more often. Uh then Jaylen Warren uh has been, you know, absolutely dynamic. He is a dog. He is a dude. Okay. And they did feed him the football today. So kudos to Arthur Smith and Aaron Rogers for uh prioritizing getting that cat the football because he once again made some plays. Um you know he just continues to prove that he is the best offensive player on this team and uh I can I really do expect them to keep feeding him and in the weeks to come which is very exciting. So if this offensive line can just figure it out a little bit and block form a little bit better I think Jaylen Warren is going to have a really special season and this offense is going to really take off. Um, but again, that’s a biggest with this offensive line. Then when we get to the defense, I think the defense has gotten better every week, and that’s a positive for sure. All right. I think that this team is in this in this coaching staff is still kind of learning exactly how to deploy this uh personnel, especially because you don’t have Deshawn out there. You don’t have Joey out there. Um, you haven’t had Derek out there all that much, even though I thought he played pretty well today. So, it’s nice to see him back. You don’t have Alex out there. Um, you know, quite a few defensive players missing from this group. Um, so they’re kind of having to piece this thing together and try and figure out what they do well, what they don’t do well. Um, but you know, thing that you can say is that they’ve given up less and less points every single week. They’ve had more and more turnovers forced every single week. Um, so overall, this defense as a whole has gotten better every week. So that is uh some positive momentum as we head into week four and as we approach kind of this tougher middle and end of the schedule for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hopefully, this defense is really firing on all cylinders by the time we get to that point in the year. Uh the run defense today, you got to give them credit, man. Uh they gave up less than 80 yards allowed to the New England running backs. Uh Drake May was able to scamper for quite a few yards today. Um but that’s obviously not the true running game. That’s more scramble yards. Uh no New England running back had more than 28 yards today. So that’s awesome stuff, guys. Um you know, holding them to, you know, medium and short games, not giving up too many uh explosive runs. I think they only gave up one explosive run to a running back today and that was 11 yards. It wasn’t the big 15, 16, 20 yard chunks that they were giving up to Kenneth Walker in week two. So, if you know we’re going to criticize the Steelers third and fourth down defense, I think we also have to acknowledge that this run defense stepped up this week. So, kudos to Kean Benton, kudos to Cole Hulkcom, kudos to Patrick Queen and all the players that have maybe struggled uh in the weeks past uh that that stepped up today. Then the pass rush, I would say, uh, certainly got the job done today for the most part. They had 25 pressures today and five sacks. Uh, they also, uh, got a couple fumbles in pass rush situations. I’m looking at you, Nick Herbig, who had an awesome day today. Uh, by the way, Nick Herig should absolutely be in the same conversation as TJ Watt and Alex Heismith, as a legitimate starting, like high-end starting edge rusher in this league. Okay? like he he was disrupting the quarterback about as much as we expect Alex Heismith to disrupt the quarterback if not more. He had that big- time play where he forced the fumble on Drake May when they were driving down the field again. Herbig deser deserves to be in that same conversation. Now, he’s obviously when everyone’s healthy, he’s going to be that third rusher. But I think the Steelers should definitely get creative in the ways that they deploy Nick Herbig and get him on the field more often, man. use TJ Watt all over the formation and put Herbig and Heismith on the edges. Allow TJ Watt to be deployed on stunts and all these different things because I think that that could be really really dangerous for opposing teams once they figure out how to deploy these three guys at the same time in third and long situations. But first, you got to have these three guys all healthy at the same time. They really haven’t had that opportunity so far this year. Um, and another thing about the Steelers defense, and I know it’s not it’s not very popular or fashionable to praise the Steelers coaching staff on a lot of things right now, and there’s a lot of good reasons for that, but the one thing that you have to give credit and praise to the Steelers coaching staff for on defense is their ability to teach people the peanut punch, the ability to punch the football out and create forced fumbles. TJ Watt has been the master of this his entire career. He leads the league in force fumbles by a wide margin since he entered the league. And then it’s not just him. I mean, today TJ didn’t even force a fumble. It was Jabril Peppers. It was Cole Hulkcom. It’s, you know, it’s Cam Hayward. It’s all these guys that are that are contributing to the turnover total. And, um, you know, you got to give credit to the Steelers coaching staff um for for teaching these guys the right way to to to locate the football, punch that thing out, and create turnovers because it I it really changed the game today. It’s changed a number of games for the Pittsburgh Steelers over the last several years and the Steelers defensive coaching staff I think deserves credit for getting these guys um you know the proper training to be able to execute these forced fumbles and get the ball on the ground. Um so kudos and a little bit of a tip of the cap to the Steelers coaching staff in that regard and also a tip to the cap to the players for executing. Um also another positive is no major injuries were were acquired today. Brick left uh for a short period with a shoulder injury. Sounds like he’s going to be fine uh moving forward, but he will be dealing with that. Um and then Darius Slay left with a little bit of a lower leg uh contusion, I think is what Mike Tomlin called it in his postgame press conference, but he was able to return to action. So, nothing major, nothing that’s going to take people out for weeks or anything like that. And now we hope that we can get Deshawn Elliott back this week. Now, we hope that we can get Joey Porter Jr. back. Uh in, you know, a few weeks we’re going to be getting Alex Heismith back. And I certainly feel good about Nick Herbig being this team’s number two starting edge during the time that he’s out. So, um certainly nice to see that this team is probably on track to get a bit more healthy heading into Dublin week versus the Vikings. And the final thing here, guys, um that I want to talk about that’s a positive is Mike Tomlin, Steelers head coach, is now 10665 and two in his career as a Steelers head coach in one score games in his career. That is near that is over 60%. That is nearly 62% of the games that are one score uh where he is winning. That is an amazing record. Um and that is pretty unique to Tomlin. Most coaches do not have that. It’s usually closer to 50% or it’s below 50%. Um there is such a thing as a skill of getting your team ready for these kind of high lever situations and finding ways to win football games. There is an old saying that good football teams find ways to win. And that has been I think Tomlin’s biggest uh biggest attribute that he brings to the job here in Pittsburgh. And Lord knows he’s not perfect. He’s not the best. Uh I think that he can be a little bit uh too cautious at times, too conservative. I think that, you know, obviously, you know, his groups have not played well enough in the postseason. Um, you know, I think that his team building philosophy, uh, in terms of giving the defense all the money, not investing in offense, certainly something that you can point to as as a weakness. Tomlin is not a perfect head coach. I will be the first one to acknowledge that. But I also think that it’s not so binary where a lot of people want to be like pro Tomlin or anti-Tlin where I just want to be like he’s got good and bad things attributed to him. How about we give him give him the proper credit for the good things and the proper um criticism for the things he doesn’t? And that’s kind of where I stand on that. And you know, games like this where it’s where it’s ugly and you’re not really uh playing your best football for large chunks of this football game, but you’re still finding a way to win the ball game on the road in a tough environment. It’s a skill, man. And you know, Mike Tomlin, you know, over 60% win percentage in one-score games. that is easily first in the National Football League among coaches that have been coaching for at least 5 years. Um I think the only one that has a higher one is Kevin Oonnell of the Minnesota Vikings and he hasn’t been in the league for 5 years yet. So um you know over almost a two decade span to still be over 60% that is pretty impressive from Mike Tomlin. Certainly not a perfect head coach. I have my issues with him. Um but certainly nice to have a coach that instills mental toughness in his groups to be able to pull out these tough victories. Now, to wrap up today’s show, I know we’re approaching almost 20 minutes on an at home video here, guys. So, for all the real ones still with me here talking Steelers football, I appreciate you, but I just want to finish up here with some general thoughts on the team 3 weeks into the season. And plain simply, guys, with the negatives that we talked about today, this team is not a Super Bowl level team right now. If they went to the playoffs right now, I would have a 0% confidence in them winning a Super Bowl and pretty low percent chance of them going on the road and winning a wildcard game. Honestly, I would feel pretty nervous about them even if they were uh home playing a wildcard team. This is just not an offensive line that has protect protected the foot the quarterback that has not provided run lanes for the dynamic running back that they have. Um this defense, especially in the passing game, has given up way too many easy answers to opposing quarterbacks. Um you know, this team has a little ways to go. In fact, probably a long ways to go, especially in the O line and passing passing defense departments here before we can start calling this team a legitimate Super Bowl contender. But keep in mind here, guys, that we are still in September. And you are a much different team in January than you are in September. And the goal is not to be a Super Bowl level team in the first month of the season. Your goal is to be a Super Bowl caliber team once you get into the playoffs. And I just want people to, you know, even though you can certainly acknowledge and be a little bit worried about some of the negative aspects of this football team right now, appreciate the tough, gritty, ugly wins that you’re getting here at the beginning of the season. All right? Because, you know, obviously, uh, those win totals count just just as much now as they do in January. And you know, the goal is to get to a place where you punch your ticket to the dance and you give yourself a chance where hopefully you’re playing your best football by the end of the season and you have a ticket to try and go on a run. And these wins, they’re going to count in December and in January when the final tally uh for the season gets tallied. And you know, we might be looking back saying, you know, we weren’t playing our best football, but we but this team gutted out some early season wins and were able to help us get into the postseason and help us hopefully win a playoff game for the first time in a long time this year. Obviously, the O line in the in the defense is going to have to be playing better in order for that to be a possibility. But with the but with the youth of this offensive line, there’s certainly a reason to believe that they will get better as the season goes on and as they continue to gel. There’s also a reason to believe that this defense will get better. Again, a lot of new pieces and hopefully they find something schematically that works for them and this group. Hopefully they get healthy, stay relatively healthy as the season goes on and hopefully this team can hit their stride midway or, you know, down the stretch and they’re playing really good football by the end of this season. If you think that, you know, a slow start means that you can’t be good at the end of the season, just look at the Philadelphia Eagles last year. All right, they had some really big issues the first four weeks of the season. They were two and two heading into their week five by week. Then they come out of that thing, you know, completely fine-tuned, ready to go, and they don’t lose another football game. In fact, they still haven’t lost a football game since that week five buy that Jaylen Herz has started and finished. Now, obviously, Steelers uh certainly have a long way to go. Um, and you know, they certainly have a long way to go from being like a team like the Philadelphia Eagles were last year, right? But the moral of the story there is not that the Steelers are the Eagles. The moral of the story is, you know, there’s a lot of teams figuring things out this early in the season. And, you know, it’s very possible that this team never figures it out. The O line sucks the entire year. The defense underperforms. They win nine games and they miss the playoffs or they lose in the first round. That’s a very real possibility for the Pittsburgh Steelers. But there’s also the possibility that this young offensive line begins to gel, figure things out as the season goes on. Maybe they add somebody at the trade deadline like Braxton Jones or Rasheed Walker or somebody else to help them on the own line. Maybe they get another receiver. They certainly have the cap space to make both of those moves if they want to before the trade deadline. The defense uh gets healthy and begins to gel and begins to uh find their schematic kind of identity and then they’re playing their best football down the stretch. That’s also a possibility at this point. So, um, you know, certainly there’s negatives, certainly there’s positives through these first three weeks, but that’s every NFL team at this point, guys. Um, you know, I I would encourage you guys not to panic too much and appreciate the fact that this team is gutting out tough wins uh on the road to start this season. Now, we go to Dublin versus the Minnesota Vikings. Carson Wentz and that Vikings offense looked pretty good today. So did that defense. It’s going to be a challenge. I’m I’m looking forward to seeing how this uh team embraces that challenge. It sounds like it’s going to be a home field environment for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Dublin next weekend. Um, and if you come out of that with a win going into the buy, you’re going into the buy three and one feeling pretty darn good about yourself. So, um, you know, I’m coming away from today’s game certainly some with with some concerns, but also a lot of positive takeaways and still a lot of hope for this 2025 season. That’ll be it for me today, guys. Thank you so much for listening along with me here today. Um, we’ll be back with another video tomorrow with overreaction Monday. Um, one of my favorite segments of the week. So, make sure you guys click that subscribe button if you haven’t already. Until next time, guys. Here we go.

  1. Pocket collapses too fast, nobody has time to get down field and Rodgers doesn't get that extra one or two seconds to throw long passes do he has to throw sideways or run the ball into a crowd every play, same problem that the steelers have had for years now with every QB paying the price, Big Ben could stand and take the hits smaller guys can't. That falls on the coaching staff! Predictable play calling and no creativity

  2. Wait! You Najee Haters blamed Najee. Harris ran behind this trash line. Neither Jack you delusional fans ever acknowledged how bad the line is. Warren had 20 carries and his average dropped from 3.4 to 2.6. Behind this line Warren will not gain more yards than Harris did. Mark it down. It will not happen and I TOLD YOU SO!.

  3. WRONG! There is no reason to believe this line will get better. Issac is 32 and declining. James Daniels was the best lineman but you delusional fans believed McCormick is better but he stinks. Frazier has regressed. Troy is dealing with experience so he has to take his licks. They sink and I TOLD YOU SO!

  4. Biggest silver lining is despite all the teams flaws we seem to have a pretty good red zone offense scoring on all but 1 trips thus far I believe & we have a top notch kicker. If offense can get into the red zone or at least FG range consistently we will be able to score points. Goal on every drive should be get ball passed mid field and we have a chance at pts

  5. Seems players regress with the steelers the coaching staff sucks dk metcalf is not playing like he's worth 30 million a year the run defense been a little better jaylen Warren is not a 20 carry back every game bring in a bigger back lew Nichols are sermon Mike Tomlin and his coaching staff stinks

  6. The Steelers fans are so delusional…. 8 years of terrible teams. 3 playoff wins in 13 years… and they still thing they have a chance. Tomlin needed fired 5 years ago. Giving up 32 points to the JETS, needing 5 TOs to beat the Patriots by 7. Can't wait until they miss the playoffs or limp in and get blownout again 😂.

Steelers fan but I'm not blind

  7. yes jack we need another receiver ive been saying this since last week nobody gets open

i love DK, he aint the best in those 50/50 type situations (ik he was yesterday on that TD) but i feel like we need another big body outside
