Steelers OVERREACTION MONDAY After Week 3: Time To GIVE UP On Roman Wilson & Super Bowl Hopes?
It is overreaction Monday morning here on Steelers Talk and today I’ve got five claims uh that I’m going to be breaking down as either overreactions, slight overreactions or not an overreaction on today’s show. Make sure you guys uh click that subscribe button. also get down there in the comments section to kick off today’s program and let me know, have you already lost hope in this football team 3 weeks into the season? Do you think there’s any chance that this team uh can, you know, look like a different team going down the stretch and give themselves a shot to win a playoff game this year or potentially even more? Give me yes or no down there in the comments section whether or not you still have hope for this team of being a playoff threat in the AFC this year. All right, so now let’s get into our first claim of the day here, which is that the Steelers should be 0 and3 right now and are 0 and only two- one because of pure luck. And I’m going to say that this is our first overreaction of the day here today, guys. Um because I do think that the Steelers have played very good football in some very tight moments in the first game against the Jets and in yesterday’s game against the Patriots. In the Jets game, you have you have a clutch drive to go and get that field goal with Chris Boswell. Then you also have two, not one, but two defensive stops at the end of that game to secure the victory. Then yesterday versus the New England Patriots, uh you’re able to force five turnovers. And by the way, I think that all those turnovers were earned. You had the tip pass that turned into an interception. That was a great play by Cam Hayward. Cam Hayward forced another fumble at the goal line. Punched it out. Fantastic play. He was diving while he was doing it, too. It was an awesome play. All right. He also forced three other fumbles. And you know, even though a five turnover game is a is a, let’s face it, it is an outlier game. That doesn’t mean that the Steelers were necessarily lucky or that the Patriots gave them those uh uh turnovers. Like the Steelers did earn, in my opinion, all five of those turnovers. And because of that, the Steelers were able to win this football game. So, Pittsburgh was able to show up when it mattered most. And this is something that we talked about yesterday in my second postgame show at home, which is that Mike Tomlin teams have this skill, especially on defense, to make some big plays when it matters most. Mike Tomlin has an over 60% win percentage 18 years into his NFL coaching career as a head coach. Uh you know, that is just and one score games. That is unbelievable. Um and that’s one of the highest in the National Football League. And that is for a reason, man. like head coaches have an ability to get their teams to play uh their best when it matters most. And even though these wins certainly haven’t been uh pretty for the Pittsburgh Steelers and there’s a lot of stuff that they need to clean up if they want to get to where they want to go to, the idea that this team should be 0 and3 and that they’ve just been getting lucky and they haven’t earned these two victories, I think is a bit of an overreaction. Now, obviously the margins in the NFL are extremely tiny. You could make an argument that if you don’t make some stupid mistakes against Seattle, this team could be 3 and 0, right? So, I think that you can play that game both ways. I think the Steelers did earn those two victories that they have because of their play in the fourth quarter. Uh, but that’s just my opinion. Then we get into our second claim today, which is that the Steelers offensive line is holding the team back and will certainly continue to do so with no chance of improvement. I’m going to say this is a slight overreaction, but also it’s pretty reasonable. Okay. Um, you know, plain simply, through three games, this offensive line has held this team back. All right. uh defenses are allowed to pretty much stick in two high safety coverages and they’re still able to defend the run. When that happens, you’re not really able to throw the ball down the field all that often. So, people are blaming Arthur Smith and they’re blaming Aaron Rogers for not throwing the ball down the field enough, but it’s like they’re not forcing teams to respect the deep ball. All right? They are just playing, you know, kind of shell coverage. They got two deep safeties. are playing a ton of cover two and a ton of cover two man against the Pittsburgh Steelers because I mean cover two man because you don’t have a threat uh rushing threat at quarterback and then if you’re not forcing them to respect the run game which the Steelers offensive line is not then that’s going to limit your options in the passing game. So the Steelers really do need to get this run game going and if they don’t uh this season and this offense is going to be very sluggish. They’re going to be forced to go on methodical drives. There’s not going to be a ton of explosive plays. Uh but remember guys that this is still a very young offensive line and the the hope and the expectation is that this group is going to gel and it’s going to get better as the season goes on. Now with Pat Meyer uh in charge of their toutelage and in char in charge of their development, uh I I’d be lying to you if I said that I had a high level of confidence that this group is going to be able to turn it around. And honestly, if I’d have to bet right now whether or not this offensive line gets it done by the end of the season and this is a well functioning group by the end of the year, I’d have to say that I probably don’t think that that’s going to happen. And if that doesn’t happen, there’s no chance at a Steelers Super Bowl. So, that is a pretty uh pretty major concern that I have and probably my biggest concern that I have about the Pittsburgh Steelers as a team at this point. Uh but you know to say that there’s no chance at improvement that the season is over because this offensive line is already cooked. Um you know I think that that is a little bit of an overreaction. Uh but we’ll see what happens in the weeks to come. Claim number three, Arthur Smith doesn’t know what he’s doing and is a big reason for the offensive struggles. Now the way that I view Arthur Smith is that he is what he is. Um and I I will say that this is a slight overreaction. I think Art has been pretty darn good on the script and the offense has been pretty darn good on the script. Uh through the first three games they have scored on all three of their opening drives. Last year that was a big issue. Last year red zone offense was a big issue. Had a hard time punching the ball in in the in the red zone. Uh this team should be eight for8 in the red zone right now. Uh the only reason why they’re not 8 for8 is because kind of a weird kind of anomaly outlier mistake from Calvin Austin the third and scramble drill. Other than that, Aaron Rogers should lead the league uh outright in touchdown passes right now. So, um, and that is with all the struggles that they have had offensively. So, like any coach, guys, I think Art brings his his his his good and his bad. Uh, the good is that I think that when you run his offense effectively, it can be very difficult to stop because he pairs a lot of things in the same formations. You know, you don’t really know what’s coming. Uh, he pairs the play action game well off of the run game. And, you know, we saw it in Tennessee. You know, you can take a quarterback like Ryan Tanahill in this offense and be a number one seed caliber of offense. uh if you especially if you have the run game that Tennessee had behind Derrick Henry, but the Steelers don’t have that run game here. So, you’re going to uh and if you don’t have that run game in this style of offense that really runs a very select number of concepts and a very select number of formations, it’s not like a super creative um you know, kind of all over the place uh style of offense like a like a McVey offense or or or or like a Matt Lafleur offense or you know, or Ben Johnson offense. It’s not going to get into a vast array of concepts. Arthur Smith’s uh kind of philosophy is we’re going to run what we run and we’re going to run what we run extremely well and you’re not going to know what’s coming because we pair so many things in certain formations. But like if you can’t get the run game going and you can’t get the play action game going because of that, it it’s very very difficult to uh you know run this offense effectively for four straight quarters without the offensive line. You’re not going to be able to establish that run game. So I think that uh Arthur Smith is what he is. I think that there’s good things and bad things to his offensive scheme. Um, I was hoping that this team was going to be able to be the team that got to a place where we could run this offense effectively, but unless this offensive line turns a new leaf and fast, uh, I I have a feeling that we’re going to have struggles on offense throughout this season, guys. Uh, be honest with me down there in the comments section. Great Arthur Smith’s job performance thus far. I think Art is honestly doing a decent job with what he has, even though I think that his offense is a bit limited. Give me an A, B, C, D, or F. I’ll give him a B minus at this point in his tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Um I think that he has been better this year than he was last year. Uh but certainly not the most creative offensive mind in football right now. So just give me an A, B, C, D, or F down there in the comment section for today’s pin question. Just a second here. I’m going to tell you about uh a great opportunity to get a great piece of Steelers apparel. While I’m telling you about that opportunity, uh give me your grade for Arthur Smith down there in the comments section. With that, let’s have a word from our sponsor today where you guys can go chatports.com8 to pick up an Aaron Rogers Steelers jersey today. I wore my Aaron Rogers jersey yesterday. Um, if you guys want to get yours uh this this afternoon, go to chatports.com8. Part of the proceeds go back to us here at Steelers Talk to help us pay for new equipment, new graphics, uh you know, keep the lights on, pay rent, do all the things that we have to do here at Chatports. So, I greatly appreciate your guys’ support. chatports.com8 to pick up your Aaron Rogers Steelers jersey today. All right, claim number four. It is time to give up on Roman Wilson, at least for now, and seek out a third starting wide receiver. And I think that this is reasonable, and I don’t think this is an overreaction, unfortunately. Um, ladies and gentlemen, and listen, man, I I I I saw the vision and I saw the reasoning for wanting to give Roman Wilson a shot. Um, you know, he was a third round pick. uh they felt like he was a good skill set for this offense and they they love they loved his work ethic and his his want to, right? Um but through three games, guys, he’s got one catch for seven yards, no touchdowns, and that one catch came in garbage time with the defense playing back. Um so it was pretty much a gimme. Obviously Aaron Rogers doesn’t have a high level of trust in Roman Wilson at this point in time. He pretty much never throws him the football. Uh he wasn’t really on the field much for either week one or really yesterday either. Um, and when he is on the field, he’s not getting targeted, right? So, uh, listen, man, I think that this team could certainly use another wide receiver threat. They do have DK Metaf, who I think is a legitimate starter. They do have Calvin Austin the third, who I think has proven himself to be a legitimate starter. But to get a third guy in here, whether it’s Tyreek Hill, whether it’s Romeo Dobs, whether it’s somebody else before the deadline, I think makes a lot of sense. It would not shock me if we see Isaiah Hajins uh, you know, get ramped up here. If they don’t make a move for a receiver via trade, I could see Hajins get an opportunity to try and force his way into this starting lineup. And the fact that we’re talking about Isaiah Hajins as a potential wide receiver three option over somebody that was a third round pick for this team just two years ago is frankly disappointing for somebody like Roman Wilson who this fan base had a lot of hope for when we drafted him out of Michigan um just two years ago. So hopefully Roman can turn it around. hopefully has a big week next week in Dublin or, you know, hope hopefully can really show out these next few weeks and prove that he belongs here. But to this point, he hasn’t really shown much to uh, you know, hold off a potential wide receiver acquisition from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Then my final claim here on this overreaction Monday is there is no hope left for the Pittsburgh Steelers this year and any chance of getting a title is officially gone. 0% chance that the Steelers win a Super Bowl this year. I think that this is an overreaction. Now, I think that this team has a long way to go, and I’ve been uh pretty clear about that both in my postgame reaction last night and then my uh second postgame show uh last night as well, but there is still a path in my opinion. There’s still enough talent on this team uh to theoretically turn things around. All right, you still have a really dynamic running back in Jaylen Warren. I think Aaron Rogers can still throw the piss out of the football. All right, and he’s he’s been generally pretty smart with it. He’s had a couple pretty bad uh turnover worthy plays, but generally he’s been pretty decent. Uh you got if you can add another receiver, if you can maybe add a piece to the offensive line, this team can turn it around in that regard. If you can get healthy on defense and you can keep up the pass rush that they had yesterday. Um you know, there is positive aspects to this team and uh you know, there is a path forward that could include the Steelers being a legitimate title contender once we get to December, January, and hopefully February. Uh they’re going to have to do a lot to get to that point. There’s no question about that and we’re going to be covering this team’s journey to try and get to that point all throughout the season. And I’m not saying that the Steelers have a particularly high chance of winning a Super Bowl at this point based on the way that they have played the first three weeks. Um, but I do uh have a sliver of hope left that this team can turn it around. Uh, but there’s definitely going to have to be some changes uh as the as the season continues on here. So, time for an update here, guys. How many games do you think that the Steelers will win this season? I think that they they have played like a nine or 10 win team first two first three weeks of the season. Hopefully uh they can play more like an 11 and 12 win team as the season goes on and we get down the stretch and we get closer to playoff play. Uh but let me know how many wins do the Steelers win this year and do you think they win a playoff game? Let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section. Ponzi and I will be going live today at 5:00 p. p.m. Eastern time here on Steelers Talk. I’m going to go watch the old 22 film here and I’m going to have my takeaways from that. Um, so make sure you guys join us later today, 5:00 p. p.m. Eastern time for our extensive Steelers coverage. Have you already lost hope in this football team? Yes or No?
We went all in with Aaron Rodgers this year. So let’s use him as much as we can. Let him pass as much as possible.
If he gets injured, then what can you do. He’ll be happier and flat out have more fun if he’s given the greenlight to Pass a lot.
I don’t see any difference in our offensive production if we pass it 35 times a game versus doing what we’re doing now by running it so much.
The O-line will be key. I don't think they gave up a sack yesterday. The O-line seemed to be gelling yesterday. That's a start.
The DL played better. Harmon and Black made Watt and Heyward's job easier. Still a lot of miscommunication in the secondary, which is understandable with the new personnel.
The Vikings game will tell us more. I hate that the game is overseas.
For real Jack…. be objective… you can't win the turnover battle by 4, and win the game by 7 points… it's a very low bar. We are not a contender by any stretch of our minds or hearts, we need a number 2 wideout, and probably also a better number 3, we need a far better offensive line, specially both tackles, which are not post season caliber tackles. We need a far better RB than Jaylen Warren who, with all due respect, it's just an average RB, who is playing his fifth season as a pro in the NFL, and has ONLY 2 games with over a 100 yards rushing, that's ridiculous. Friermuth is ok, but again, there isn't one elite caliber TE in our roster. And, most importantly, the most expensive defensive unit in 3 of the 4 last seasons, it's not as dominant as it should be. We have a HC who is unable to overcome his own limitations and consistently year after year for the last 10 years, has not improved in his decision making, and most importantly in his results. I think the very best thing that could happen to the Steelers, is to have a 3 or 4 wins year this year, and put to good use all those draft picks Khan has accumulated. And going one step further, it would be ideal if we would get rid of vanilla Tomlin, and hire a better draft selection team. To me Tomlin is what Stu's father in law says in The Hangover 2, he is "cho"… soft white rice… inoffensive and delicate.
C
Arthur Smith is straight up trash….Matt Canada 2.0
Get his ass outta Pittsburgh.. DC and O-Line coach needs to go also
You got the players but the same damn results…Common sense will tell you it's t h e fucking coaching
real one
WE SHOULD EASILY AND REALISTICALLY BE 0-3. Jets dumb penalty gave us 1st down. We lose to Seahawks cuz we can’t stop the run. ANY OTHER TEAM GETS 5 TURNOVERS WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN UP BY 24!!!!
Lost hope in our o-line
If the O line doesn't get better they won't win 10 games, the line is trash can't block and can't get the run game going
They are NOT going to do crap, they will end up losing in the first round of playoffs if they make it that far which I seriously doubt.
Think about all the players/coaches that have come, still there or are now gone.. The Steelers still have the same issues.. & there's one common denominator who's been there thru it all.. Head Coach Mike Tomlin I'd the real issue! 💯 💯 I 🤷🏿♂️.. Until he's gone I have zero faith in achieving a superbowl win.. Haven't done anything to prove me otherwise. Why haven't we hired competent coordinators? We have smith now.. What about defense??
Worst Steelers team ever.
Steelers didn’t win a Super Bowl with Ben, Bell and AB. There is no hope
Run defense got much better
O line didn't give up any sacks
Got 5 turnovers
Big stop at thr end
Big touchdown when needed most
Won ugly just like the eagles did yesterday.
On the bad side
Still way too many pass yards given up.
Offensive line is bad
Getting another receiver won't fix anything. Getting another receiver isn't going to give the qb any more time to throw the ball unless he lines up as a running back to chip.
This team seems stale to me. Aaron Rodgers has been decent but not great. I think he is the reason where effective in the red zone though. I don’t see this team achieving anything more than any of the teams in the last five years. It may be time for significant change with this team.
Everything looks difficult for the offense
Steelers offense is horrible! The coaching is very poor and the defense is horrible. For the last 10years you can just effortlessly move the ball on the Steelers
C
If we figure out this fricking run game , it makes Rods day easier to pass ! We need to fix this run game and I think the offense won't struggle and become stagnant like what happened vs Pats
This team has only played 3 games together. They will come together
Wilson is small
It really feels like you're trying against all odds to make the glass look half full. I know you're a life long tomlin apologist in spite of saying you're not, but we're not blind. "Making big plays when it counts" kind seems like saying "putting out a fire you started". The offense started out great but as soon as the patriots scored tomlin got scared and had Smith dial it back to vanilla af. Tomlin's insistence on winning only in the way he wants to win (by having the defense play like "goons") has been holding this team back for years. I'm tired of people saying "look at the bright side" the bright side IS NOT having Aaron Rodgers play in a way that Mason Rudolph could play. I'm tired of tomlin trying to force gainwell down or throats just to prove he was right. Mike tomlin is going to be the most overrated head coach to every go into the hof. I just wish he'd take his 9-8 seasons, his one liners and his constant living in his fears to another team. We've had our fill here.
STEELERS SUCK!!!
7 -10
If the Steelers were playing 500 teams yes they would be 0 and 3
Nope i don't have hope! But I'm hoping 4 mike to get fired 😅
We make wild card with an above .500 and lose in wild card. Tomlin streak alive and he turns
Real one
No but both O-Line and Defense need to improve. Give Rodgers time and he will pick any D apart. But need the O-Line!!!
To be fair most turnovers happened on the Steelers side of the field. I get it if we scored 21 points but got the ball in the redzone on turnovers. The turnovers needed 80 yard drives to get points… I think the bigger concern was the defense again almost giving up 30 points if it wasnt for the turnovers…
No.. it doesn’t matter what they do, I’ll always support the Black and Gold
We have got to push the ball down feild. Enough east-west.
