MLB Network | Mark Derosa GOES CRAZY Seattle Mariners sweep Houston Astros in final season series

your Astros. I wanted to, you know, I wanted to text him. Is that why your mood is terrible? I wanted to text him all weekend because we usually text a lot. Between the Astros and the god-awful Houston Texans, when do when does the University of Houston basketball team get started? Yeah, that’ll be good. You know, when you have the thought bubbles, you know, those bubbles on the Tex and then they disappear. That’s what I did all weekend. Yeah. And he walks in and he goes, before he even says hello, he says, “I hate fall. I hate it.” And then he wears a turtleneck. I hate this time of year. I’m trying to lean into it. But I don’t like fall because I know what’s coming around the corner and that’s winter. No, that’s Christmas and the holidays. There’s nothing like it. But after that, you’re just fighting for your life. Overheard few minutes before the show started. Cy saying he wants to be frozen and live forever. The first person ever to live forever. Keep me around forever. Absolutely. I want to be the first person to live to like a buck 80. How long do you want to live? What day is today? One day. How about Let’s go. Let’s see if we can see if we can get till Friday. Back to you. Friday’s payday. We got a great group of guys in there, you know, great clubhouse. Uh some veterans, young guys. It’s a good mix in there and uh it seems like every night somebody’s stepping up in a different way. So, uh you know, proud of the group of guys that, you know, tough road trip here and big time, you know, stepping up. So, um you know, I think we’re just hungry. You know, we’re just hungry to get going and you know, we missed the playoffs game the last two years. So, uh you remember those things and you know, trying to keep our head down and keep going right now. you know, not not the ideal situation, right? Not what we wanted expecting um out of the series, but uh we got to we got to really um take our off day tomorrow and be ready to play on Tuesday. Robert, you said it for months. The West will be won this weekend and perhaps it was. Mariners up 36 to play. They hold the tiebreaker, make it four. They haven’t won the West since 2001. We said that this last week. Brian Woo was one at the time. And my goodness, I mean, even as an Astros fan, Seattle earned it. Oh, absolutely. Every single one. I mean, to to go into Houston, remember, the Astros had just swept the Texas Rangers, so they had to be feeling good. But the the Mariners with a statement weekend for the American League West and maybe the American League as a whole. It was a series for me that on paper as you were looking at the team and you think about where the Astro how the Astros got to this point. Honestly, it seemed like they were playing a little over their skis only because of the injuries that they’ve had to endure throughout the season. You were curious on how are they finding ways to win? And the Mariners, they were struggling. You’re like, how are these guys not getting it done? And for me, that’s where you just have to trust the guys that you’re putting in there consistently. And I want to give Jerry doto a lot of love in how he’s been able to put this team together and actually go for it. He’s not just trying to win 54% of the time right now. He’s trying to win the World Series. And I think of it as as a card player. I’m I’m a poker player myself. I enjoy the gamble. And when you’re gambling, you have to understand the decision is not always right or wrong depending on if you win or lose. Is you’re trying to put yourself in the best position to win right there. And sometimes you’re going to play the best cards that you have. Jerry Dotto made the moves and he was playing his best cards and the Mariners still found a way to go 15 and 21 in the middle of August. And you’re watching this team play and Jerry Dotto had to be in the stands like that’s the edited version right there. What is going on? I got good cards. I got a top pair that I brought over with Gino Suarez and Josh Naylor. And even though Gino started off a little slow, you’re starting to see these guys really come into themselves and fall into their roles with the team. It was clear holes that they had that Jerry Dotto made a conscious decision that I’m not going to halfway go into it this year. I’m going to get the best guys available at that that position. I’m going to give me a third baseman and a first baseman. Josh Naylor not even talking about he stole 17 of 17 by the way. We got four aces right now. It doesn’t matter about the ups and downs that a pitching staff has gone through. As long as they’re clicking at the right time late, that’s all that plays into the postseason. And Brian Woo is by far the true ace of that team. He came out with the PC titanus. Hopefully, he’s okay. Then after that, you still have George Kirby. These guys from top to bottom are going to be able to carry you through a postseason. Luis Castillo, it doesn’t matter about struggles midseason. He’s starting to come around right now. Nobody is running to the bat rack to face any of these guys when the postseason come around. And then Logan Gilbert last night look amazing. All these guys, when you have players who have ace stuff and they’re healthy, you trust that they’re going to be able to carry you through the postseason. And you can’t think of any team that’s lined up better with starting rotation than the Mariners. Let’s go to three of a kind. Three of a kind is a great hand. And these are the guys who have already been there. They’ve been there, done that. They’re part of the core as his team at this point. J-Rod really starting to swing the bat well right now. 295 over with 17 home runs since the All-Star break. Jorge Palano hitting well over 300 over his last 30 games. These are guys that Jerry brought in to be part of the core of this team and put up consistent at bats. And JP Crawford sitting towards the bottom of the lineup over his last 20 games, hitting over 300 as well. Huge grand slam yesterday. You see this energy feeding through the entire rotation. And then we got to get We’re talking about the big dumper. That’s right. You got to go to a royal flush. Big dumper. Royal flush. You see the word play the entire season. He’s been able to put the team on his back. 58 home runs, 121 RBI’s already the most single season homers by a catcher and a switch hitter. Potentially on his way to an MVP season. And Jerry Dotto, this is what he’s foreshadowing. trying to get back to this point. And the only way you can do that is playing the right cards and trusting over a long period of time, those cards are start going to start to turn in your favor and you’re going to start to win some ball games because you have the right pieces in play. Yeah. And this isn’t some sort of pluckucky little underdog team. The Mariners can go deep into the postseason. They can ultimately win it all with what they have there. The Astros, meantime, uh we forgot to mention that Jeremy Pena did not play yesterday. He’s dealing with an oblique sort of discomfort. That’s not ideal. They finish up with the A’s beginning tomorrow in Sacramento and then they go to Anaheim. Meanwhile, the Mariners finish up with the Rockies and the Dodgers. They’re three back. Mariners own the tiebreaker. See why? Look, you know, this is this go during this golden age of Astros baseball. They’ve done tremendous things, but this might be too much at only because of the injury. It started back when they lost Josh her when they were winning all the close games and your only your one through four were guys that were really part of part part of your true core of the team and then you started filling in the bottom of that lineup. You were winning 3-2 games all the time because you were playing six seven in a game bring in a Brayu bring in hater game time and you were winning every close one and you didn’t worry about the blowouts. But after you lose that one key cog in your rot in your in your bullpen, you find yourself in a tough spot to where I feel like when they’re going on the field against top tier pitching, which is what they had to see in this last series against Seattle. Yeah. We saw what that offense is to an extent. If Altuve and and Koreah aren’t swinging the bat at the top of the lineup, you find yourself in a tough spot trying to string together three, four, five hits in an inning to put up multiple runs against elite pitching. They’re going to have their days for sure, but consistently it’s going to be really tough on them. Just tell them there’s a chance for the sake of there’s definitely a chance. Hey, you know, we have we have I mean, there’s we have praised the Astros for so long and Dana Brown on how he’s been able to keep these guys above water throughout this season. How over the last few years, you’ve been losing key players and continuing to find a way. Yeah, you just lost Tucker and Bregman and you still found a way. But the more superstar players you lose, every time one of those new guys that you have gets hurt, it puts you in a really tough spot because now you don’t have the guys in the minor leagues that can come in and fill in for those. Well, it’s been a crazy season and we’ve seen teams give up leads. We’ve seen teams overcome deficits. Uh maybe the Astros have one more magic trick in them. We’ll see.

  1. Astros fan here. With all the injuries, the 1st half was SOOOO MUCH FUN to watch. We never expected to be able to keep it up. We are a team with 0 chemistry. Espada needs to go. Dusty had a fun clubhouse. Espada takes himself too seriously. I don't think we deserve to be in the 2025 playoffs, and I'm not mad about it. The Mariners have SPARKLE AND ZAZZ, MAN! They have FUN! They are consistent and cohesive. They have the bats. They have the pitching. I'm super happy for someone new to get the West Title. We have won it 8 times in a row, right? That is boring for baeeball. Plus, everyone hates us. Failing has an endearing property to humans. I think we will win the WS next year, hands down, but this year, swallow that pride, and use every opportunity to get young guys at bats at the MLB level! Explore our AA and AAA pitching. Let Cam hit with no pressure. Let Matthews and Melton and Salazar and Dezenzo and Cole do some MLB work.

  2. I'd also sit Framber for his last start. He 100% ruined his FA value in 2 months. That "crossup" with Caesar Salad Czar….disgusting. Get that Jibroni out of Houston. Good luck to whatever team signs him. HIRE 50 SPORTS PSYCHOLOGISTS!!! Any AAA pitcher deserves a start over him. Frambey is Flambeyed.

  3. 2026 Prospectus- My Predictions

    LINEUP 2026

    1. Correa (high obp. Low power. He gets on.)

    2. Pena (high obp. Low-Mid power, speed. He gets on base.)

    3. Yordan (High obp, risp, RAW POWER, and our best RBI guy. Plus, with the next guy behind him, they can't pitch around him.)

    4. Paredes (High obp. Plus Power. Walks. Slower runner, but clutch.)

    5. Walker (3 Outcome guy at his floor. Raw Power. Lower OBP. Never really walks. Just hits Homers and drives in runs.)

    6. Altuve (He is now a low avg power hitter? Okayyyyy!!¿)

    7. Yainer (Bad year, but typically elite hitting for a Catcher. High avg. High obp. Plus power. Good with Risp.)

    8. Cam Smith (He will get wayyyy better. Speed. Defense. Crazy power but low contact chaser.)

    9. Jake Meyers (High Avg. High OBP. Speed. Defense. 2ND LEADOFF GUY!)

    THAT LINEUP EVERY DAY WINS.

    STARTING ROTATION:

    1. Hunter Brown (Our Opening Day Guy)
    2. Christian Javier (Knocks all the rust off, and goes back to IL Reptile.)
    3. FA signing (So much money comes off the books next year, we can afford Cease, who fits our park very well, is an Ace, and has CY ceiling.)

    4. Arrighetti (Confidence boost and a different catcher, and he could be a Cease Plus.)

    5. Brandon Walter (Good Greif, this guy was so amazing before the injury.)

    BULLPEN:
KEEP- OKERT, KING, ABREU, HADER, SOUSA, ORT, ENNY DE LOS SANTOS, and work with Kimbrell over the offseason. Get his mechanichs tidied up, and he still has the stuff and attitude needed for leverage.

Dump everyone else. Sign a guy or 2 who throw 100+ with low effort.

    Summation:

We have the talent. We have the money. We have the experience. We have WAYYY too many future All Star hitters who will never get a shot until they are 27. That's no good for a player. You want guys ready by 25 at the latest. We can trade guys like Zach Cole, Dezenzo, Melton, Matthews will replace Altuve in a couple years (Or Correa, if Paredes is on 3rd, Pena SS, Correa 2B, Walker 1B, Yainer/Carrot Tini. Get ourselves an ace and several 100mph plus RP who are proven good.

Good luck. Hire me, Dana. I know the numbers like you wouldn't believe, and I have no spreadsheets or algorithms. Just BB IQ. Years of Fantasy dominance have let me see patterns that repeat and anomalies, when to know the difference, and when to lean in. My aunt, Karen Chavez worked for the Astros Front Office for 35 years, God rest her beautiful soul. You need a maverick analyst. Like how the military recruits from War video game champions, bring in fantasy champions. We do so much research and are so good at pattern recognition and outside the bun thinking. Also, I'm funny in an office, and would make it fun for everyone, because winning is fun. Imagine if I had access to all your digital maps and tools!!! I could really help.

  4. Not to mention, the last couple of months the Mariners have been absolutely terrible on the road. As a fan, I was worried going into it as well history but also because we were playing in Houston despite taking 2 of 3 in KC
