🔴LIVE 🔴 Los Angeles Dodgers vs Arizona Diamondbacks /September 22/ /MLB THE SHOW 25
and the Arizona Diamondbacks. First pitch coming at you right after the break. So, just about set now starting in this one, Eduardo Rodriguez. But Chris, he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I’ll say this. Every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans, in front of the city, and you know, this guy no different. He wants to be more effective here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven’t been great at home. I’m sure he wants to turn that around, and we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one. And that one pulled foul. So glad these ballparks have installed the netting to protect the fans, keep things safer all around the league. Gets a piece and stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. That missed inside. Two and two. chases the fast up the ladder. Struck him out. Boogie just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. And now it’s Mookie Betts. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Batting third first base. There’s Freddy Freeman now. Another solid power season. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Very humble guy and you know on the field off the field and he goes about his at bats in that way. Boo. He’s, you know, just trying to stay with the plan. And that plan is hit the ball to left center field, drive the ball that way, let it travel. Yep. Drilled in the air, high and deep right field. And that one is out of here. He circles the bases and just like that, they’re out front. It’s two nothing. Two pitches, two swings. That one for a home run. Looking to be aggressive all the way. And it paid off for him in a big way. With this pitcher’s velocity, a change up is really a break for a hitter. He got a BP fast ball, didn’t move a whole lot, and he absolutely tattooed it. So, one out, nobody on. Here comes Max Mudsy. Just missed. upstairs and the count is 2 and 0. Rodriguez maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, pitchers, they can come out field. This one’s into the outfield. Could be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second. Muny into second. It’s a double. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Pretty much just a textbook double into the gap. And when you can drop one in there between the outfielders, you know you’re making the turn at first. Just an excellent swing. And up next for Los Angeles, Andy Pahes. [Applause] Swing and a foul out of play. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? Well, partner, every pitcher is a little different. I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show. Uh so perhaps it’s the same with him. Nobody really wants their rhythm broken up, but sometimes they need a little pickme up. And a pitch misses outside. Now one and two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Two down. [Applause] Batting six, leftielder Michael Conorto. Here’s the Dodgers lineup now in that cleanup spot. A key piece for this club, Max Muny. Well, these days we know teams, you know, they put a game plan together for every hitter in a lineup. But a guy like this, they circle him, make sure he doesn’t beat you. Uh so, you know, they put in a little extra time and effort and on how they’re going to approach him. He can be a huge difference maker when he’s hot. So, it’s going to be fun to see how they try to work him right here. And first off is fouled off. And that one is inside ball one. Swag and a ball hit out towards left center field. Snags it on the run and that’ll do it. Two-run shot for the Dodgers this inning and it’s two zip Dodgers. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. back here in the desert and today’s starter number 80. How about a scouting report on him? Well, he’s putting together a really nice season on the mound. Erra in the low threes. Very respectable when you consider guys are looking to do damage. They’re not trying to just walk and hit singles. They’re trying to hit homers and draw walks and score runs. So, when you have a guy that can limit the other team from scoring more than a few runs, that’s really tough to beat game in and game out. Swinging a foul straight back. Yeah, that’s fouled off. misses off the play and the count one and two. Whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. That ball’s carrying and it hits the fence. safe at second with a leadoff double. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. Put a great swing on it. And man, he wasn’t fooled at all. And now the DH Haraldo Peromo and a fast ball misses outside for a ball. And that is ball one. MVP. MVP. Two and0. swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field and it falls. Runner from second crosses the plate and it’s an RBI single. It’s 2-1. Oh, that’s a lonely feeling for an outfielder. The read wasn’t great and it really hurts when it cost your team a run. This is Corbin Carroll. That’s through there for a strike. Swing and a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way and it’s gone. His 32nd of the year. And they add a couple more. It’s 3-2. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. [Applause] Power versus power right there. Like two locomotives colliding. Who’s going to win? Well, a really good job there by the hitter getting the top hand working. Powers that fast ball out of here. And here’s the catcher, Gabrielle Moreno [Applause] inside. And that’s ball one. Singi. Maybe some nerves getting the best of him in the first. Well, it’s hard to know exactly if it’s nerves or not, but he just doesn’t have it right now. Now, those hitters on the other side, they’re going to say it’s nerves and use that as a competitive edge to try to jump on him even more. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Can be tough to bounce back after a big home run, but nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. Got him. And that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. And what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is. And that’s what leads to the strikeout. Bla1 Alexander in the box now as he leaves that one up high. One down, base is empty. Right through there for a strike. Next offering is in for a strike. Establishing both ends of the zone is critical. Well, most times guys are wanting to get hitters out down, but if you can get them to look up, get a called strike, that’s going to make that strike zone a lot bigger. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, we see it a lot more these days than we ever did when I played, but a slider in the 90s still catches your attention even if you’re sitting on the pitch. Good luck recognizing that tight spin and adjusting to the late break. Ilaro Vargas stands in now. Looks at that one inside. Two outs. That catches the corner. I got a ball. One strike. Tapped softly on the ground. Throws to first in time. And that is that Dbacks at a pair on the homer. It’s now a 32 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. All set for the start of the unit. And at the plate for the Dodgers, Mikuel Rojos. Rodriguez back to work. Rojos goes 5′ 11 in, hitting seventh in today’s lineup. And he was born in Venezuela. James Kingsley, our played umpire, consistent and maybe a little generous on the edges. Yeah, Boo He’ll give a little bit on the edges like you said, but from what I’ve seen, he usually does that when a pitcher is just commanding those parts of the strike zone and essentially they’ve earned it. The umpire rolls with them on the ground right side and that one finds its way through. Had a good start to the inning. adding eight right fielder Alex Call. So digging in Alex Call. First pitch misses. He gave up a couple of runs in the first. His offense picked him up. It’s time for him to settle in now and throw up some zeros on that scoreboard. [Music] The kick and the pitch. Runner goes swing and a miss. Throw to second. Tag and they got him. Well, I think that was a hit and run right there. When you look at how far that pitch was out of the zone and the hitter still trying to put wood on it, put it in play, that tells you that they had something going. But unfortunately, it was a good job of execution by the pitcher and the catcher to get that out of the zone and then throw out the runner at second base. Really nice job behind the dish. That one off the mark and it’s two and one. in for a strike. Good slider. [Applause] Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. One down. Base is empty in the air. Left side. Sizes this one up. He’s there. He’s got it. And that quickly two away. Dalton rushing steps to the plate for the Dodgers. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Two out. Base is empty. That one missed. Right through there for a strike. Just missed. That’s ball four. tried another fast ball but missed the spot. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Tommy Edmond at the plate. He struck out swinging at his first atbat. And that misses one and0. Rushing leads off first with two down to the inning. swing and a miss. Two strikes to a guy who’s already 0 for one with the punch out. The only guy in the lineup with that strike out, but you can’t get too relaxed. You still got to make good pitches to get him out. He’ll see another. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Music] And that’s in the dirt. just misses the mark outside the zone. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. On the ground to third and that’s a fair ball. And now they’ll have runners on the corners with two away. Now batting short stops. So two outs with runners on the corners. Mookie bets steps to the plate for the Dodgers. One for one with a single so far. First pitch and he just misses. Inside just missed. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Swinging a drive deep right field and an automatic double as it hops the fence as a run scores on the play. The automatic double kind of feels like enjoying cruise control in your car. Boo. You don’t need to keep the pedal down as you cruise into second base. Just no worries in the world. You know what? He put a really good swing on that one. Freddy Freeman up to the dish. First pitch just misses. This one in the air center field. And that’s the third out. One run in the inning, but they leave two now to the bottom of the second. All tied up at three a piece. Back here at Chase Field and stepping in the rookie left fielder number 13. Swinging a foul straight back. Not close with that one. And it’s one and one. Late swing fouled off. [Music] fouls it off. Still one and two and there’s a ball. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it and a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout and a base hit. So a runner aboard to start the inning. Oh, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. [Applause] Next up for the Diamondbacks, Jordan Lawler. Throw over to first and he dives back in safely. And that’s in there at the knees. Come on, Jordan. Now a screamer into the outfield. call. Pulls it down and he makes the catch and there’s one down. He was all over that fast ball right there. I tell you what, if he gets under it just by a fraction of an inch or a little bit more, that’s way back. Jorge Barrosa stands in now for the Diamondbacks. [Applause] Ball one. No strikes. [Applause] And another ball. [Applause] No break. inside corner for a strike. Now two and one. Back-to-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. The two-1 breaking ball misses down and away. Next offering in there for a strike. Three and two now. Tied up here in the early going. Got him looking as the fast ball runs back over the inside corner. Oh, just a beautiful fast ball on the inside corner for that backwards K right there. I think the hitter saw it all the way coming from that opposite arm angle. So I got to think he was looking away and just got locked up by the heart stuff boring in on his hands. Catel Marte up to the plate. A double and a run scored his first time up. Pitch misses there. And that’s ball one. [Music] And that’s in for a strike. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. They stopped the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night. And just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Heraldo Peromo will hit next. RBI single. His last time up. Betts in plenty of time to first and the inning is over. Diamondbacks strand a pair. Score remains tied at three. onto the third inning. Now it’s the Dodger cleanup hitter, Maxy. Been a rough start on the mound for this guy. This third inning so important for him to get on track, turn the page, settle in, do all those things you need to do to give your team a little bit of length in this one. Just off the outside edge and it’s one and0. One thing with Max Muny, and it’ll be interesting to see what he throws here. He hammers the fast ball. There’s the strike of the knees. The 1-1 is fouled off. And that one is inside. That one inside. Look out. Battling here as he fouls it away. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. That’s back. Going gone. That’s one way to quiet the crowd. Home run number 20 on the year and the Dodgers have the lead. It’s 43. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Andy Pahes steps to the plate for the Dodgers. Ripped into right field. Base hit. just so sound in his mechanics. Hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. And here is Michael Conforto. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Here’s the pitch. Runner goes. That’s to third. The throw to first. No chance at the double play with the runner in motion. Good fade and sinking action of that change up. Got that hitter to roll over. Miguel Rojas at the plate. A single his first time. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Number 55 up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Number 67 warming up as well and a foul ball. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Pulls the string with the change up. Struck him out. We’re going to take a look at the pitch sequence of that at bat. And the thing to notice are the pitch locations. Every single one of them on the edges of the strike zone. And as a hitter, that can be pretty frustrating because you don’t expect a pitcher to be able to make quality pitches one after another like that. And so those are tough spots to do damage in a great demonstration of pitch command. And it got him a punch out that time. And now it’s going to be Alex Call just missed. Pah stands at second with two gone. and a foul ball. Makes the count two and one. Man on second. Two down. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Vargas makes the catch and that is that. That funky Muny with a homer for LA. It’s now a 43 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Leading off, Corbin Carroll. Corbin Carroll. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Calls it in. And there’s one away. Now batting catcher Gabrielle Moreno. Next to hit for Arizona, Gabrielle Moreno. He was a strikeout victim his first time. That’s off the inside corner. And that is ball one. And he gets that fast ball by him upstairs. Wow. Good luck catching up to that one. Hard hit left side throws to first and a couple of quick outs. Now batting third baseman Bla1 Alexander. Bla1 Alexander the next to hit. Struck out swinging his first time. He swings and fouls one off. High in the air out to right. Call under it. Makes the catch and that’ll do it. Three up, three down for him there. On to inning number four. It’s the Dodgers four and the Diamondbacks three. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth. Dalton rushing. All right. Hit hard on the ground to short. Lawler tossed to first. One up, one down. Tommy Edmond. Wow, Singy. What a throw. We got to take another look at it, but this time with the numbers from Stackcast. Yeah, Boo, that’s about as good as it gets. You’ll see the hardest throwing infielders reach 90 plus on throws across the diamond. So, he’s pretty much right there with the best infield arms in the game. That was a rocket of a throw right there. And here comes Tommy Edmond. Just missed. One out. Base is empty. And that’s in for a strike. Just missed. swing and a miss. Got him to go up the ladder for the K. Two outs. Base is empty. Now it’s the shorts stop. Mookie bets. this to third. Slings it across and the Dodgers are set down in order. Nothing doing for the Dodgers here, but they hold on to a 4-3 lead. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the first baseman, Ilaro Vargas. tomorrow Vargas. There’s the swing and a miss. You know, these Dbacks doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. And here’s a stat for you, Boo. They’re making contact with more than 85% of the P. Oh, now a great stop. That’s going to be a single. Great effort on defense, but no chance to get him at first. It doesn’t really matter where you are in the lineup. Your job is to get on base and try to start a rally if you’re leading off an inning. So, an infield single does the job right there. Now, we’ll see if they can make something happen. Now, number 13 up the middle. What a stop. There’s one relay to first double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Lawler. So, two down now and here is Jordan Lawler in there and it’s 0 and one. Come on. Come on. You can do it. The shorts stop takes a ball. Swing and a high-fly ball out towards right field. Call makes a nice run of catch. One hit in the inning, but no one left. We played four. It’s the Dodgers four and the Diamondbacks three. Now on the mound for the Diamondbacks, Jaylen Beaks. Still pretty early in the ball game, so this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. And here’s Freddy Freeman. He’s already homered in this game. Freeman [Music] in his seventh season, 31 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. You know, these Dodgers putting together some really good at bats in this game. And there’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Maxy at the dish. He’s already homerred here in this one. Foul ball there. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top of the fifth. Next pitch is outside. And that’s outside. late that time and it’s strike two. Well, that’s today’s style of baseball right there. Right. Big time VO on the bump and big time pop at the plate. This one in the air. Alexander. [Applause] They got it for out number two. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Andy Pahes steps to the plate for the Dodgers. One for two. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] Fought off. Foul. Two down. Nobody on and ball one. O2 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and it’s a three up, three down inning. Dodgers down in order and it remains a 4-3 game. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Here’s the center fielder, Jorge Barrosa. Jorge Barrosa. This one drilled right center field. That one heading for the fence and gone. That’s worth the price of admission. And they tie it up. It’s 44. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. [Applause] A breaking ball on the inside part of the play requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the front shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. [Applause] Here’s Catel Marte. Not your prototypical leadoff guy. Gets on base. Yes. But also some power. And that misses ball one. Fouled off left side. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered. He’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. Tied at four. And now two and one. Got two balls, one strike. And that drops in for a strike. Just a submit mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it. that one 95 to finish him off. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things that when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch. When a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity, next to hit, Heraldo Peromo, and that drops in for a strike. One down. Base is empty. Hard ground ball base knock. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. a nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Corbin Carroll stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Ball one there. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. The one runner takes off. That one hammered but pulled fouled. Man at first, one away. And a count one and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here in the dirt. Runner holds tight as the count moves to two and two. Next one misses and now three and two on this count. Runner not known for his speed but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo. That one is absolutely belted. This one looks like trouble. Coming home. Cut off. Throw to third. Not in time. He’s safe as a run scores. He quickly went from hitter to base runner. Love when guys make that transition. And he’s got speed to put on a show. Here [Applause] comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Number 80 will depart. Got them some innings, but they didn’t come easy. New pitcher coming on and we’ll be back after a quick break. Now pitching and we’ve got ourselves a pitching change. Show Otani. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. And next will be the cleanup hitter Gabrielle Moreno. Bull for two in this one. Check swing and he went strike one. swing and a high-fly ball right field. Call and he makes the catch. Runner tags from third. The throw is offline and he’s in to score and they lead by two. No, that’s the third run of the inning. And this team is doing a nice job of executing at the plate right now. Now it’s going to be Bla1 Alexander. Swing and a miss. That’s strike one. Two gone, base is empty, but three runs across. Last half of inning number five. Swaying in a miss. 0 and two now. Action in the pen down there. Kirby Yates looks to be getting ready for manager Dave Roberts. Scott also throwing. Pitch in the dirt. gonna count one and two. Ripped on the ground to second. Whips it to first. And that is the inning. Three runs on three hits. One a solo shot. Five innings complete. It’s the Diamondback six and the Dodgers four. Back here at Chase Field, top six. Here’s the left fielder, Michael Conforto. Beaks back to work. That’s a little bit low. And that one lifted in the air. Center field puts it away for the out. Now it’s the second baseman, Miguel Rojas. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. And they have their first hit since the third inning. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Now it’s the right fielder, Alex Call. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Now, these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. The lefty, the one and that is out of play. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes and that one fouled off. That one misses and it’s two and two. Swag and a miss. Struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Now the catcher up to hit. Dalton rushing. He’s 0 for one. Tap foul at the plate. That’s the third. They get the force and that is the third out of the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors and a man left. 678 do two in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Diamondback six and the Dodgers four. Back here in the desert, stepping in, Ilamaro Vargas. That’s in there. And it’s 0 and one. Activity in the bullpen for the Dodgers. Anthony Ba looks to be getting ready for manager Dave Roberts. That’s too high. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. There’s a strike. Swing and a miss at 100. No chance. Oh, we see it more commonly in the sport these days, but man, a triple-digit fastball blown right by someone is still pretty awesome to witness. I mean, you got to be geared up and ready to swing it when a guy like this comes out of the bullpen because that fast ball, it eats. And if you’re not ready, you’re going to be walking back to the dugout. Number 13 up for the third time and takes ball one. swings and blasts one deep to left center. That’s back. Got all of that one. A solo shot. His second home run of the series. And they tack one on the board. It’s 74. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. when they’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. That was one of those home runs where you really don’t know if he got enough of it off the bat. I mean, he put a good swing on it clearly, but I wouldn’t say he really got the sweet spot on the bat. The exit vo wasn’t anything too impressive, but it had all it needed for him to circle the pillows. One down and now the shorts stop. Jordan Lawler shortened the bunt and missed it. It’s 0 and one. One out. Base is empty and a run in here in the bottom of the sixth. Swing and a miss. This one smoked on its way out of here. They do it again. Backto back homers and they tack on to their lead. It’s 84. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop and they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one, Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. Backto back jacks and this club is fired up right now, Boo. I mean, this is the kind of thing where you really start to notice hitters in a lineup feeding off each other and the collective confidence just continues to grow. [Applause] [Music] Face is empty. One away. Now at the plate, Jorge Barrosa and a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Still only one out here in the inning. This one smoked could be trouble around first and hustling for second. Not stopping. He’s going for three. The relay. He’s in there. Putting some good swings on the ball. That’s his second extra base hit in this one. Just a really nice approach to shoot that line drive to the opposite field. There’s a lot of hard work and discipline that goes into getting a result like that at the plate. Doesn’t come naturally for most hitters. So, back to the top of the Arizona lineup. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte. That’s in there. And that is strike one. just missed. Bar Roa stands at third with one gone in the inning. Started to swing. Held up. Next pitch misses and now three in one. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. And ball four to a board. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. designated hitter runners in the corners here. One away. Heraldo Purdomo digs in now. Singi, he’s got a history of coming through in big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. [Applause] Lifted in the air right center field. Pah settles under it and makes the catch. Runner tags for home. Throw is offline and he scores and the lead is up to five. And here comes the Dodgers manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Otani will depart. And as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with the new pitcher after this break. number 70 on a pitch out of the pen here. Bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. Now, up next for Arizona, Corbin Carroll. And it was a homer back in the first inning that got his day started at the plate. Yeah, Boo. A two-run blast. And that swing will give him confidence the rest of the way. hit hard to the ground and up the middle. Base hit. Throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. And his hot hitting continues. They kept him in the yard that time, but all he’s doing now is passing the baton. And everything seems to get started around this guy. Gabrielle Moreno getting ready to hit. Nice grab. Fires to first and they get the out. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s opened up now. 94. back after this on the show. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Nabil Chrisman. And he’s got a nice lead to work with, so he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. Back to the top of the order now. And now here is Tommy Edmond, one for three. out towards right center. That’s well struck. That’s back there and out of here. His 14th of the year. And they cut into the lead. It’s 95. That home run narrows the gap between these two. This one isn’t over yet. Welcome to the game. First pitch out of the bullpen, a tough one. And you know, he’s just trying to get one in there for a strike. And on the other side, as a hitter, it’s a great time to be aggressive and let it fly. It’s not what they were looking for when they turned to him, but now he’s got to find a way to reset. Now it’s Mookie Betts. There’s a strike. [Applause] Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the top half of inning number seven. Next offering down in the dirt swinging a ground ball. Fair ball around first. Heading for two. And they hold him at second. Maybe this is going to be the moment they start the comeback. Man, he just absolutely turned on that one. Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying in his mechanics. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Freddy Freeman steps to the plate for the Dodgers. in there at the knees. Strike one. [Applause] Betts stands at second with no outs. On the ground right side and it goes just foul. Pitch misses and the count is one and two. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. Man at second on the ground right side and that’s just foul. [Music] Swang at a line drive. Base hit it to left field. Flying around third is Betts. He will score. It’s an RBI single. It’s 96. Up next for the Dodgers. Here comes Max Muny. Swings and misses at the pitch off the plate. Rudder at first with no outs here. There’s a swing and a drive way back on its way. Long gone. [Music] Another homer. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. And they throw a pair on the board. It’s 98. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game. And just like that, they’re back in it. Well, I’m not really sure how he kept that fair. When you’re out in front on a breaking ball like that, such a good chance that it’s going to hook foul, but not this time. He kept the hands moving forward just long enough to sneak it inside that foul pole. Now, the Diamondbacks manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Nabil Krismat departs and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Number 54 gets the call from the pen. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. And now the center fielder, Andy Pahes. Close but called a ball. One and0. He was late there. Strike one. Hard hit to third. Throw pulls him off the bag and he’s saved. Now batting left fielder Michael Conforto. No outs. Runner at first. The batter will be Michael Conforto. 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. Close but called a ball. And that’s ball one. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. This one in the dirt. No advance. Good job behind the dish. Squirts away a little bit. Tag save at second and good hustle to move up. That’s a wild pitch. Really good read by the runner there. His secondary lead. He anticipates the trajectory going down and gets a really nice jump off to second base. Now he’s in scoring position. He’s taken away the double play opportunity. So, the tying run at second. There’s the strike. That one catches the corner for a strike. It’s a hitter. You don’t know what to expect here in the 3-2. If he’ll throw a breaking ball 3-1, he’ll do it again. 3-2 fouls that off to the left and will do it again. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch but just a little tardy on the fast ball and a swing and a miss and that’s the first out and next for LA Miguel Roas. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. That clips the corner. Check swing called strike. Swings and misses. struck him out. Had him out front for strike three. Well, he used the slow curve very effectively right there. He just spun it up to the plate and had his guy way out in front. Not only a good pitch, but a really good job of setting it up. So, up next, Alex Call 0 for three in this one. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. [Music] left field on the move. And that’s the third out. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s down to one here at 98. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back. Set for the last half of the seventh. Now the third base, Bla1 Alexander. Third base. Blaze Alexander. This one in the air. Rushing. Pulls it in for the out. And there’s one away. Good hard fast ball up in the zone right there. They look really good coming in, but so hard to get on top of as a hitter. Ilaro Vargas stands in now for the Diamondbacks. A switch hitter batting right. There’s a strike outside low and it’s a ball and a strike. grounds one to short. Gets it to first and a couple of quick outs. Now batting number 13. That one missed. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom of the seventh. Foul ball. Next offering is in for a strike. Oh, it’s a real nice cutter right there. I mean, this guy can struggle with the inside pitch at times. So, I’d say that’s pretty effective if you can continue to command it on that side of the plate. Next offering is in the dirt. And a swing and a miss. Three up, three down. Inning over. Diamondbacks down quickly. They lead it 98. New pitcher on now, John Curtis. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Well, one-run game. Dalton rushing now at the plate. To the right side, tosses to first. First out in the top of the eighth. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff just like we saw. Here’s a switch hitter Tommy Edmond. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases that misses the zone and it’s one and0. A bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Gets under it and pops it up. Brings it in. Out number two. Hey man, four pitches, two outs. That is an excellent pace. Here’s Mookie Betts. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Curtis 31 years old and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2014. Let’s go back. Swings and misses in the count. One and two. No, no signs of wavering on the mound here in the eighth. He’s looking rock solid so far. [Applause] Swing and a chopper out to short. Oh, what a stop over to first. And that’s a great play for the out. This guy’s anticipation is off the charts. Don’t see many shorts stops better than that. Great job to complete the play and end the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now Jordan Lawler. Jordan Lawler. And a foul ball. And that’s outside and it is two and one. [Music] Just missed. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Swinging a foul, pushed off to the right. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. [Music] That one misses. So a leadoff walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. So digging in, Jorge Barrosa. Squares, pushes at it, misses it. It’s a strike. 0 and one. Pop dump and that’s a foul ball. The O2 and that one just missed off the outside edge. on the ground right side. Nice stop to his knee. The throw on the money. Nice play. Well, he looks so comfortable making that play. Dives, comes up with it and then from one knee like he’s just playing catch with his kid. Nice throw across the diamond at first. And now it’s the switch hitting second baseman, Catel Marte. Just missed. Man at second. Swinging a foul straight back. That misses the zone and it’s two and one. [Applause] Swing and a ball popped up. This one a mile high. Bet settles underneath it and puts the squeeze on that one. And there’s two away. Now batting the designated hitter, Haraldo. Haraldo Peromo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. for him right now at the plate. It’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Fast ball for a strike and it’s 0 and one. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Lawler at second with two down [Music] and a foul ball. He stays alive. Two outs. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Oh, great stop from his knees. The throw. What a play. Inning over. Making it look easy at the Keystone position. Definitely worth another look. He’ll get some high fives when he gets into the dugout. Back now and on the mound to closer number 27. I think closer has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball and we see a pretty high turnover rate because of it. Every outing seems to be high pressure, this one included. We’ll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save. So now it’s Freddy Freeman. first offering and it just misses. Hit in the air left field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out and a quick out number one. That’s a big first out right there. And that changes things. Yeah, you can kind of see how just the hope and optimism is shrunk a little bit, but they got a couple more outs to work with. They got to find a way to get a runner on and get one around the bases. Here’s Max Muny. He’s got a couple homers already, so can he possibly do it again? Come on, man. Of course he can. Those two he hit were legit and he looks pretty locked in right now at the dish. on the corner for a strike. 0 and one. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. Bounding ball here. Rolls foul. That missed by a lot. Now one and two. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Swings and misses. struck him out. Just one out remaining for the Dodgers. I got to think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curveball down low to get him swinging. Now, especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days, that’s a devastating combination. So, it’s their last chance in this one. Here’s the center fielder, Andy Pahes. Hit to right and that should do it. He’s got it. ball game and the Diamondbacks hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Well, this was a total team effort using six pitchers in this ball game to get the win. Outstanding job of passing the baton, the next pitcher stepping up and getting it done. You got to give them a lot of credit because this is not easy to do. We’ll see how it affects them over the next couple of days.
