MLB Network | “Astros are DONE” – Dan Plesac weighs in on Seattle Mariners sweep Houston Astros

What is going on? It is crazy. So, I want to start with what took place in Houston. Look, we have been big Cal Raleigh. We’re going to do the great September race for AL MVP in a second. But the reason they swept Dan the starting rotation, which has been rough on the road, great at home. They went into Houston and they dealt. How about this? The starting rotation, 17 innings pitched. They allowed one run. They walked two, gave up nine hits in 17. Their starters between the three gave up one run in 17 innings. So that starting rotation we’ve been talking about the last two years. No doubt. Yeah, it stepped up. When they needed to step up at the biggest time, hostile environment in Houston, they delivered. Who were they throwing to? They were throwing to Cal Raleigh who also had two home runs in that series. But it also proves that it’s not three guys in a rotation. You got to have the depth. And we’ve talked about the Mariners depth. So now you’ve fallen. What three guys are throwing? It isn’t like, oh no, Woo is not pitching this series. It was the guys have so much depth that they were able to get through it. And who are they throwing to? Yeah, Cal Raleigh. Come on, man. It’s over with everybody. Oh, really? You think it’s over? The MVP is done. I’ve heard whispers that he has to get to 60 homers. There’s me. There’s not much more. There’s not much more he has to do. I mean, he’s hit 57 home runs. He set a new Mariner record. He passed a legend. He he set broke Mickey Manel’s record. He’s got He’s home run continually. We’re going to dive into that a little. Gold glove defense. What else you want the guy to do? The guy that was the MVP of the Houston Astros before he got injured with a hamstring injury was Esacho Parades. Now, they rushed him back to play in this series. Don Alvarez went out and it didn’t look good. Didn’t work out good. And this kind of showed the state of where the Astros were at. This was a desperation. He hadn’t had any at bats in the minor leagues. He hadn’t had any at bats in a simulated game to get him ready. So, so this is how big it was to the Astros that they felt like they needed him. But it also shows that they didn’t have the depth that they thought they had or else you would have had that. When you lose Alvarez, you lose Parades. Basically, you start losing that offense. They were desperate. I’m telling you right now, if I’m a fan of the Houston Astros, I’m worried they’re not going to make the playoffs now. And if they don’t make the playoffs, I feel so so badly for Joe Espata, who should be a finalist for AL manager of the year. This team dealt with so much adversity in terms of health. And and they somehow would always figure out a way no matter who was on the IIL. They were missing all their guys, but it feels like this was the stomp that broke the Astros back. Couldn’t agree with you more. They finally get that big left-handed bat they’ve been waiting for all season long. I mean, that is that is rolling a left ankle like you would not believe. I’m with you. I thought this would be the guy that was going to shoot some life back in that lineup. He was swinging the bat really well and it was just a awful timing for him to be lost for the regular season. Think about the year Alvarez has had freak injuries. Mhm. Nothing that was like you expect a guy to miss games four, but he’s had some freak accidents that end up knocking him out. Imagine if they had him all year and the move they make to pick up even out from the break on they pick up Kareah and they’re able to have that. They never had their whole team together. They didn’t have Parades, Alvarez, you throw Kareah in there, Altuve. They didn’t have everybody at and this is following the off seasonason where they said goodbye to Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker. Yeah, like think about everything. They’re not dead yet and they’re still knocking on the door. They’re they’re not dead yet. They’re not going to roll over and play. Well Well, the the Astros have lost three in a row. Uh they’ve won half their games of the last 10. They’re tied for that third and final AL wild card spot with the Cleveland Guardians who won 10 of 11. Look at where we were September versus Central standings. The Guardians don’t want to win a wild card. They want to win the division. They were 10 and a half games out, guys. They’re one game back. They were one game over 500. And I didn’t think they had a chance. They needed a run of all runs. And they did it. They did the improbable, which is hard to do in the month of September when winds are precious. They’re hard to come by. They bowed their necks and they just went out and they played great ball. And now they’ve got the momentum Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. The Tigers come into Detroit. Scubble though goes Tuesday night. Biggest game of the year for the Tigers. Look at this this this graphic. These are your pitching probables. Jack Flity who’s going game two. He’s the Tigers are 9 and 20 when he starts. They’re 9 and 20. And Tanner By’s been on fire. They’re 26 games over 500 when he doesn’t pitch. You get the feeling like I do like if the Tigers lose game one, they’re in trouble. Oh yeah. I mean, game one is I think the biggest game of the year for the Tigers is Tuesday night. They’re already in trouble. Look at this. I mean, that’s that I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything like that before. No, but then every once in a while, Jack Flity when his back’s up against the wall in a big game. I’m not saying he’s going to go eight scoreless innings, but just when you’re ready, like I don’t know about Jack Flity, he steps up and he steps up big. He pitched big a couple of weeks ago in New York against the Yankees, so it it’s in there. But he’s going to need he’s going to need a big start on Wednesday. When I go uh when we get preview a series like this, which is so monumental, we usually focus just on the starting pitchers, but if you’re looking at the two superheroes that are trying to save the seasons of these two teams, put a cape on TKO and Jose Ramirez, Dan, this this game coming up for TK Scubble after not winning his last time out. And he actually he pitched well against the Guardians. He made one pitch that got Noel took him deep. When you looked at that start, are you thinking to yourself though, he still got the goods to dominate? Yeah, and this was the start everyone was concerned because he had a little bit of that side issue. I thought his stuff was good. He pitched six innings, he gave up one run. You want to see, hey, are you going to get some ugly swings off that high fast ball? It was filled with a lot of ugly swings. I thought his command was good. Uh, he threw some good change ups, some good breaking balls. This pitch right here, how strong is Big Christmas? This, listen, probably not where exactly he wanted it to be located, but this ball is outer third and he hits it off the end of the bat. It’s not a terrible. It’s not like it was center cut. And then after that, he took the ball away and he ran into some trouble in the sixth inning. Right. Sixth inning, Guardians had a chance to blow this one wide open. He gets another crack at big Christmas and he says good night to him and just blows him away. So, and and I think he knew this was the spot. First and third, two outs. And you want to say like, okay, you want to see him get out of it. One of the best fast balls he threw all day. He threw the ball well. I wouldn’t even say it was a mistake to Noel. It was just a big strong guy. There aren’t a lot of guys that can hit the ball off the end of the bat on something off speed and hook it out of the ballpark, but he did. I go ahead. I was just say, you know how guys go like this and they hold their ear telling the crowd to yell. That’s what it looked like before he threw their pitch. Like I know he’s listening to pitch calm, but it was almost like go ahead start cheering because I got this guy. Is this not the matchup? Jose Ramirez 367 against Terrick Scooble. No damage though. And that that to me is the key. Look, he’s going to get his hits. There’s certain guys that get their hits. And Derek Scooble, we go way back with these guys all the way to 21. Really? All right. zero RBI’s ever. So, what’s he do? He keeps him in the ballpark. Jose’s going to get his hits. This sequence was interesting. He’s stolen three bases off him. This one here, he throws the ball away. He ends up scoring on this sequence. All right. That’s the only damage that Jose has done. Period. He’s getting some hits. This ball should have been caught. Ends up being a triple. All right. But he’s keeping him in the park. And I think this is the key. Some guys are going to get their hits. It’s like you’re gonna play against Steph Curry. He’s gonna score his points, right? Okay. But everybody else is not gonna beat me. I’m not gonna let him kill me. Jose, he’s kept him in the ballpark. And I think that’s been the biggest difference. And he’s forcing everybody else to get him. Jose’s on. He’s made damage, but he’s not scoring runs. He scored three runs in four years against this guy. Yeah. So, to me, Jose’s going to get his knocks. What we’ve seen Jose do is go outside the strike zone and go ahead and drive runs in. He’s got zero RBI’s, scored three runs. Well, Scuba is one of the best pitchers on the planet. And I I guess he’s hitting, if you look at the numbers, he’s hitting 367. He’s he’s swinging about great against him, right? But there are certain guys and a game plan that they’re finally executing. We’ve been saying all year, why do you pitch to Jose? You let him get his knocks. You don’t let him do damage. Everybody else let him do damage. and the Guardians back in got back in the race. So, I don’t think I think Scubble will nibble nibble. He’s only walked him a few times, but he’s going to make him not hurt him. He’s going to keep him in the park. I mean, if if this isn’t really an advertisement of what a great player Jose Ramirez, what he’s been able to do the last two weeks because you look up and down a lineup, it’s not the Blue Jays lineup, it’s not the Astros, it’s not the Yankees lineup. I mean th this is one of the lowest batting average we’ve seen in recent years for a team in the American League. They have one guy, but that one guy makes up for like three guys. Harold touched on it. A great bad ball hitter. He’s not looking to walk. He’s looking to drive in runs. He’s a great base runner. He’s a good defender. He does everything well. And I hope finally he gets some pub and some run and deserves to be one of the he’s one of the best 10 players in the
