Although too early to tell, the hype has been surrounding Cootes over the last couple weeks as he has very much impressed at both Canucks training camp and pre season. After 35 years, could he be the next rookie to play the season after his draft year? What do you think?
Side note: both Cootes and Nedved are draftees of the Seattle Thunderbirds 👀

I have my doubts. He would probably get man handled
I’ll be gobsmacked if Cootes makes his debut this season. Nedved was a 2nd overall pick who had 145 points in the WHL in his draft year. Cootes, while I’m optimistic about him, was a 15th overall pick. They usually need more time.
He’s also the first Canuck who would debut with the last name Cootes 🤯
It’d be to his detriment. He isn’t an NHLer until he fills out. He has the NHL shot and IQ but that means nothing if he’s injured because he can’t take contact from grown men
Hopefully. Like a young Wyatt Johnston
And they were both Seattle Thunderbirds!
Edit: I now see that’s clearly stated at the bottom of your post. I’m not deleting just so people know how fucking stupid I am and not to take my posts seriously
Well he’s been impressive so far. It’s still a longshot for him to make the opening night roster but you never know.
I know a lot of people don’t want to rush him but if earns it then he should be given the chance. It’s a bad look to hold back our own prospects if they impress. Everyone always talks about ruining development but the reality is most of those supposedly ruined guys wouldn’t have made it anyways. Their failure would’ve just been blamed on some other factor.
Let Cootes marinate, we learned our lesson for rushing the prospects.
I don’t understand the obsession with rushing Cootes to the NHL. Why ruin the development of another young prospect just for the sake of a nice story?
If he earns it (big if), then he deserves a spot. Canucks deserve some good luck and hopefully cootes is the answer to our abysmal centre problem
The good news is Richard’s on Richards is gone.
The that bullet can be dogged.
So he has a chance

Hope not, he’s not near ready; physically especially.
Hype ≠reality
Canucks ruined Nedved using same thought process
Better for his development would be for him to go back and dominate in the WHL. Come into the camp next season prepared to potentially win a 4C spot. I think Horvat’s career path is both realistic and achievable by him.
Nedved was pretty shit that season, should’ve stayed in the W.
No, he’s clearly not ready. Let’s not rush him
Kid looks good but one of the best things about the Alviin Rutherford era is they let the kids cook in the minors. Seems to be panning out, I can’t remember a time when we had so many intriguing prospects.
Ryan Kesler made the team in his draft year. Not sure if he was 18 or had already turned 19.
I could see a 9-game look, but that’s it. Unless he’s clearly NHL ready at that point, he’s going back to juniors.
I think he still needs a good look during pre-season, save the conclusions to after it’s done. I would assume that he’s locked a spot for him for this whole pre-season to get a solid look at him and give him all the experience we can.
Every once in a while i read about players who became superstars after being drafted really late so who knows just sayin
I thought the second picture was of Cootes for a second. I thought this was the most developed 18 year old on the planet
Petr was probably more infamous for getting shitfaced at The Roxy and trying to hit on 18 year olds.
The 1990 team was shitty. The current Canucks are not.Â
Not worth the risk of potentially losing one of Bains or karlsson on waivers
He’s been in scrimmages and split squad games made up of 80% not-NHL calibre players, and the NHLers that have played are going at half speed. The game is a lot different the more cuts are made and as bonafide players start shifting into gear.
To have a chance he’d have to dominate and look well above the rest. Not just pretty good against a bunch of junior and minor league talent. Then also keep that level up when against 60-80-90% complete rosters.
