Who Steps Up As The Bulls Leader In 2025-26 Season?

We are only a few days away from Chicago Bulls training camp and media day opening and there going to be a lot of questions for the Chicago Bulls during the 20256 season. Today’s episode we’re going to talk about which bull has the most to prove and who’s going to step up as the Bulls leader this season. We’ll talk about all that and more on today’s Locked on Bulls. You are Locked On Bulls, your daily Chicago Bulls podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Thank you for tuning in to Lockdown Bulls, member of the Locked On Network, where it’s your team every single day. That’s Pat the Designer, host and creator of the Windy City Breeze and host of the Chicago Bears podcast over at ESPN 1000. I’m Hayes, host, creator of Chicago Bulls Central, Chicago Bear Central YouTube pages and podcast. And uh yeah, no title sponsor today, so the show’s just brought to you by us. There you go on that one. How you doing? Yeah. How you doing? How you doing? All right, Pat, with that Hey, the Bears won yesterday, bro. Hey, Bears won. How’s your wife? That was a great game. I I felt very good after that game. But uh Pat, with that said, let’s talk about how we feel about this Bulls team. Uh there’s a lot of kind of questions up in about the Bulls. Of course, Josh Giddy just got paid. Kobe and Io looking to get paid. Modis Buzzelis hopefully taking that that that next step up. You got players on the bench. Isaac Kuru, new newly acquired bull. Which bull do you think has the most approve during this upcoming season? Pat, uh, I mean, listen, I think pretty obviously to me, it’s the same name we’ve been talking about that the Bulls have been trying to push to the front. I mean, I think it’s modest bisellis. You know, the conversation on what he has to prove is, hey, can you take on the shoulders of this franchise or are you just another piece that’s going to be a part of this team? Um, I think that is I mean that’s franchise. You think that has to be answered in year two? Listen, the NBA is the kind of league where it doesn’t take long for guys that are that guy to become, right? A lot of guys do it their rookie season. It’s not how Billy Donovan really ran the show here, so there wasn’t an opportunity for it. But when Modis was given the opportunity, he kept going out there and making plays. He kept going out there and doing more and being more impactful. And but I I’m I’m not a believer that by year six, seven, eight in in the league with like how some of these players are although what is Kobe? No, Kobe like year six that all of a sudden you’re going to become a different player. Usually by that time you are who you are and you don’t have a leader out of anybody who is who they are right now on this team. Unfortunately, I I shouldn’t say a leader. You don’t have your superstar or your star out of anybody who is on this team. Maybe Giddy still could be that. Giddy’s only in year four. Year five now. I think year five. But he’s in a situation where literally they’ve only tried to put him in disadvantageous spots for his skill set. It’s a little bit different for Giddy because he he he had one season prior to last year of playing his actual role and that was point guard. Yeah. 100%. So I keep freezing for you. Yeah, you keep freezing for me. That’s weird. I don’t know what it is. I don’t know what’s happening. Check that Wi-Fi. You still ain’t upgrade to that fiber network yet? Call. Got to get it together, Pat. Got to make a call. That must be moving, man. I got time out here. I got seven shows all in different locations now. I’m tired. Yeah, you I get it. I get it. I understand. Uh, no. I mean, I I I just I for me, I don’t think that that has to happen in year two for Modest. do believe that that’s a question that’s eventually going to have to have to happen. If it doesn’t happen in year two, I don’t think that that means it’s like not going to happen for Modis, but I understand why why you say that if he can make that leap in year two. It just clarifies and clears up so much for the Chicago Bulls. Um I’m looking at Josh Giddy. He got paid. He got he got his money. Didn’t get quite what he wanted, but I think what we saw from Josh Giddy last year was such a great glimpse over the that ending stretch of the season of who Josh Giddy could be. I’m just looking now like all right, how close can you be that be that be be to that for an entire season, right? And you know, again, I think Josh Giddy impacts the game so many ways. Like, it’s not about him scoring over 20 points per game. Like, if Josh Giddy scored 16 17 points per game, I’m I’m perfectly fine with that. Like, but then it’s like the rebounds, the assists, how well does the offense look? Are you making players around you better? And those are things that, you know, aren’t always quantifiable by the stat sheet, but I think like watching the game is going to be important for that for Josh Giddy next year. I think this is going to be a year where Josh Giddy in that role and and stepping into it now. And you know, you don’t have a Zack Lavine there that’s going to be heavy isolation. It really is going to be down to Kobe and Giddy to be the engines of this offense. I’m really looking forward to who Josh Giddy proves that he is this season because I do think he’s going to prove it. Just to what level is the question there? Yeah, I think that’s a big conversation as well. You know what I mean? Look, you got the money. You you you got all of the opportunity. And literally, Billy Donovan and this offense are turning the keys over to you. Hey, a lot of the development is going to be on Josh Giddy’s shoulders as well. As much as, you know, like that’s the part that people don’t talk about. Like when you talk about going out there and all the guys that developed under, you know, a Jason kid or whatever, like they are a part of that because that point guard play that you put out there gives them the opportunity to go be the players that they can be. Um, so I think that, you know, kind of in that same vein, right, Josh Giddy, Modis Buzzel’s development is kind of tied to how often Josh Giddy gets him the basketball, what spots he puts him in, and how Modis is going to be able to go out there and turn that into uh um elite basketball. Because this is not an offense where it’s going to be throw the ball to Modus in the corner, let him stand there for 15 seconds, and then go operate. There’s going to be an offense where you have to move, where you have to find your your space, uh where you have to be able to get to the bucket, and when the open shot is there, you have to be able to knock it down. That all is predicated on Josh Giddy getting you the ball at the right time. Now, the good thing is it’s the one thing that he’s elite at, but can you be elite at it when again, kind of like we were talking about with Modest, like when it rests on your shoulders for you to go out there and be the guy making these plays more times than not? Yeah. And that’s what Giddy’s going to have to show. Think I think there’s a there’s a lot there for for Josh Kitty and Kobe for that matter. I mean Kobe and IO, you know, anytime you’re a contract year, you got you got stuff to prove. So that just goes without saying, right? But especially for like Kobe wanting reportedly over 30 million coming into a season where you’re the number one scorer from day one. No if ends or buts about it. You are the number one scorer on this team. Josh Giddy may be the playmaker and operate the offense, but you are the scorer. I I I look at it this way, Pat. And maybe maybe it’s too harsh of a of a of a level to put on it. you could tell me. I I I don’t think anything less than 25 points per game for Kobe is acceptable. Like I I I mean, we’ll see if if Modest takes that huge leap, then maybe, right? But like just as it stands right now, it got to be 25 points per game. Listen, it it’s it’s again, we keep saying it, but like it’s the NBA. Like it is a league that rookies come in and put up 20 plus. You know what I mean? It’s a league that if you are that guy, it doesn’t take very long to figure it out, right? like Cam Thomas finally started getting shot opportunities and all of a sudden everybody was like, you know, this dude’s actually a talented basketball player. Yeah, we knew that coming out. Y’all just didn’t give him the chance to shoot the basketball. Kobe’s had those opportunities. He’s had that time and again it continues to be the consistency of it. I don’t want a Chris Middleton 25. I don’t want 30 and and 11. Just FYI, do you know a rookie hasn’t averaged 20 points per game since 2019 20? Who? Zion. That’s that’s the last rookie to do it. the rookie who hasn’t averaged 20. No, he’s the last rookie to average 20 points per game. He said rookies come in and average. It hasn’t happened since the 201920 season. Oh man. Okay, that’s that’s that’s still a rookie coming in, bro. That’s that’s quite that’s quite a long stretch there. I mean, I’m just saying like it it’s also, you know, you got to be in that situation to go in there and just chuck up shots. Yeah, that’s true. You know what I mean? Like Zion was in a situation where it was like, hey, there’s no one else on this team. I was going to say it wasn’t even no everybody else was dead. There was nobody. It was Baron. It was just him. There’s nobody else playing here, bro. So, just go shoot the ball and clap Mariah Mills. By the way, I I know I know. By the way, off for Mariah Mills is a wild That’s wild, bro. I got an email. Uh oh. that offered me the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Mariah Mills about her trying to turn her career or change the perception on her career, I should say. Uh, and now she is doing music. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Somebody reached out to you. Yes. For a chance to interview Mariah Mills on her changing the percept. They have to watch the show. They have to because as much as you bring we bring up more they have to watch the show. That’s crazy, bro. Bro, I didn’t know what to do with that. I was like I’m I’m kind of good. I think I’m straight, bro. Like I don’t Yeah. I mean, as much as we mention her, just tell her to go ahead and come on. Locked on Bulls. We can give her a 10-minute segment. That next joke was about to be crazy. It’ll be a locked on first. That’s for damn sure. I was about to say is it gonna be come on locked on bulls or so like I was saying uh yeah I mean like I just I just think that you know you have to you have to take that next you have to take that next step uh your last it was the wildest thing it was the wildest thing ever. I was like why why did you reach out to me like is she from Chicago or something? No I don’t think so. Maybe some of her parts are, you know, maybe they maybe they import them in. Jeff Tanaka made a few of them, bro. I’m just saying there might be some tariffs on the All right. All right. Well, let us know in the comments section which bull do you think has the most I swear to God, I got to find this email now, bro. I got to send it to you. That’s wild, bro. That’s crazy. So, I forgot about it till this moment. I literally was just like, I don’t really know what to do with this. Like, dude, is this spam? Is this And I like I like the email was from a real marketing company. I went and Googled the company. That’s crazy, bro. Got to change that perception, man. I guess so. I guess so. With that said, let’s see the Can Billy Donovan change the perception Bulls fans have about him? See, great segue there. Uh, in what ways do you think Billy Donovan and the coaching staff have to step up this year? I think, you know, you you laid a great foundation of how the system needs to run uh uh last year offensively. I even think we finished the season, we finished the season, Pat, over the last 25 games, 12th in defensive rating. So, the Bulls, you know, they start off the season 22nd in defensive rating to move up 10 spots over the course of the season. They finished overall 19th in defensive rating. So, there’s a lot that could be kind of improved on defensively, but what do you think the staff have to step up on the most? Billy Donovan and his staff this season. Listen, we I I don’t think that Billy Donovan has changed who he is. I don’t think that he’s going to change who he is. I don’t think there’s going to be these massive differences. You know what it is? Win. That’s what it comes down to. Like, when Billy Donovan is winning, people talk about him as a a genius of a head coach that, you know, can do no wrong and and can go out there and ball out. When Billy Donovan and his teams lose, we talk about Billy Donovan as a guy who underperforms and this is what he always did in the playoffs and right like that’s really all it’s tied to. And you just haven’t seen Billy win here enough. To me, I don’t think his scheme has changed drastically. I think his use of V is probably the biggest thing that we’ve seen change over four years. Um, I think having Josh Giddy, you now have somebody who very much very similar to Lonzo in the beginning could run the scheme and could get this team out in transition and could allow you to play the style of game that you want to play. But I don’t really think like I don’t sit here and go, “Yeah, Billy Donovan changed everything about who he was.” I think that the team just kind of I guess for lack of a better term, you finally went out there and found the guy that could run the team very similar to Lonzo and all of a sudden it felt like the team was better. you go out there and you win games this year. I think that’s going to be the biggest thing in changing the perception and and seeing this team step up because players got to make plays. How many years do we talk about Hazel was like I mean, yeah, we could say the Bulls, you know, are struggling in the three-point shot, but there’s a lot of wide openen shots that they miss in the corner. Yeah, I I do think Billy Donovan changed the way that he caught I think the system drastically changed, but Bill but to that credit, Billy always has the system that fits the roster. Like that’s what it is. When you have Zack Lavine, uh Demard Rose, and Nick Levous, guess what? You’re going to be running a lot of isolation plays. I think changing the makeup of this roster is a big reason why our style of play change because it just fits. Like we’ve seen Billy coach a more modern style. So when people, you know, act like Billy Donovan can’t coach a modern style of basketball. Now, we saw it. We saw it in OKC. He did it when Chris Paul came to OKC. No matter how long and tooth Chris Paul was at that time, like they played a much more style at that point in time of basketball. So, we know Billy Donovan’s capable of it. The question is, does he have the roster to execute it and now he does. I mean, defensively is is I think where the biggest question is. Now, that is on West Unselled. He basically turned the defense over to West Unelled. Um, and I think having IO hopefully for a full season, having Isaac Aaru a lot on on the court a lot more. But I tell you what, Pat, I know it’s going to be a long path for him to probably get on the floor. But Noah Essen I think is gonna be a key lynch pin in what the the bull ceiling defensively unless the roster changes overall at some it may not be this season. It may be next year but I think when you look at what Noah Essen his versatility defensively and rim protection I think that’s going to be a player that I can see West Unell using a lot defensively at some point in time. He just got to prove he’s ready. Yeah. He’s got to you got to see you know how confident you can be in in Noah to put him out there early on. Listen, if you can find a way to put your what is he 11 what do we have the 11th pick? 12th pick 12th I think cuz if Modus was 11th right if you can find a way to put your 12th pick in the draft on the court that’s a good thing like it’s more concerning that you can’t um like I I I would say defense is going to be his path to getting on the floor. Um I think that that he just doesn’t have enough of a developed offensive game yet. Doesn’t mean that he can’t. Um, and I think, listen, to me, the thing I’m most excited to see with Noah is the pick and roll with him and Josh Giddy. Find a way to get in the game. Uh, uh, whatever your path is to get into the game. They have to scheme you somewhat into the system. And if they’re able to scheme you in and it’s in pick and roll games with Josh Giddy where you just get to play above the rim and go try to dunk the basketball down or you just try to finish around the room, like that’s what you’re good at. Um, and I think it just puts Noah in that description just gave me Tyrus Thomas flashbacks. My my bad. If you saw my eyes glaze over for a minute is cuz I was just like, “Wait a second, boy.” But I’m sorry. Go ahead. I mean, honestly though, like the difference with Tyrus was, you know, like I think there was more Tyrus. That’s the difference. He just wasn’t good. Yeah. But there was a lot more hope on Tyrus. He was coming off the the uh championship runs at LSU. I mean, like belief that he was going to continue to develop and I mean, the best he ever got was LSU. But hey, you know, Lamarcus Aldridge, we’ve made some bad trades, bro. Some very bad trades. We’ve made some just insane trades and lack thereof, I guess. Like, never get over Marcus Fizer. You You and the Marcus Fiser thing. That’s wild, bro. Dwayne Wade is arguably the fourth greatest shooting guard of all time and he’s from your city. And you were like Fizer. Fiser. Yeah. Uh but nonetheless, Pat, that’s I’ll never let it go. That’s hilarious. Yeah. I mean, it is what it is there. Hall of Famer in your city, you know what I mean? Yeah. Um, but uh I look at it and I I for me I I do look at what they can do defensively and I know we have a very limited defensive roster. That is why that is such an area that can improve. But like we’ve seen Billy Donovan and that is when he was running the defense coach a team up that didn’t really have really solid defenders all around it to be well what were we the first year were we top five defensively top 10 the second year and then we fell off after that we were top 10 the second year I think we were still top 10 the third year like bro like we were we were top now granted situationally we were a terrible defense and I think that’s the biggest issue that that the Bulls had the entire time but like bro we were a top 10 defense almost the entire time through with Demar De Rozan, Zack Lavine, Nigel Lavusovvich, and Kobe White. Which one of them is a defender? You was still What did we finish last season? We still finished We finished 19th. We finished 19th. Okay. Yeah, that’s fall off there. That’s a fall off. We were better in the second half of the year, though. But either way, like top we were 12. Top 12 second half of the season with Josh Giddy, Kobe White, Mus Bzelis, who listen, he can block some shots, but he ain’t a great defender. He got better as a defender last year. Lavusovvich like I don’t And then Kevin Herder got there like literally not a defender on that team. So Kevin Herder played the best defense of his career. I think that after after we acquired him like it was crazy. But we’ll see what the Bulls The thing I’ve learned about about like stuff like defense because defense is so much effort that you can like if you just get a team that buys in to the right system defensively as well. You can be a top 10 uh defensive team with having like two really good defenders on your team and we got that in Isaac Iumu. If like you said if somebody like Mus takes a step defensively Collins has moments where he’s okay defensively but I don’t think he like he hasn’t been great over the course of career but he gives effort defensively. I could see a world in which the Bulls can can be top 12, 13ish somewhere defensively this season, but they’re gonna have to lock in and give that consistent effort to get that done. 100%. It truly is just an effort thing, and it’s it’s about the willingness to to um essentially shift everybody to the best defender. Shift your the best player on the other team to the best defender and make sure that he stays there and he’s contained. the the ability to be on a string, the ability to have the help when you know your guy gets beat. Okay, I know I need to slide over here and he needs to pick up mine. Like, how many guys that weren’t defenders did we see Tom Thibido turn into decent defenders or good defenders even because they just were willing to play the system well? It’s not about being great. It’s about getting a body in front of somebody. Yeah. And more times than not, if you can do that, you’ll be a better defensive team than most teams in the league. Cuz most teams in the league don’t care about getting nobody in front of people. Like that’s a fact. Your camera has visual Tourette’s today, too, by the way. Who? What? Visual Tourette’s. That’s what your camera has today. You don’t know what’s weird? It’s just Streamyard. I’m looking at my camera. I’m looking at it like it’s just Streamyard. And I streamed the whole show in 4K. Uh, by the way, you you want to hear a stupid dog story, bro? So, this weekend, right, I let I let Loki outside. Keep in mind, almost 200 lb Aikita. I let him outside and we’re just walking mind our own minding our own business and for some reason I don’t know this squirrel ran up to Loki like he was daring him to chase him and I said Loki you better not bro Loki don’t do it the squirrel looked at him took off running into into the into the woods Loki was gone he was gone could do nothing for I I’m not going to pull my arm out of the socket trying to pull a 200 pound dog back that’s running at full speed I’m yelling in I’m yelling into the woods lowkey lowkey Low key, he came out, bro. The squirrel was in his mouth. He had the He caught the mother. He caught the squirrel. So, almost almost slipped up there. Yeah. Yeah. Almost. Well, at least he came back with a gift. And that’s exactly how they look at it, too, bro. They look at you like, “Here, I got I got this for you. I got this squir. I killed this animal for you. Now you eat it.” The squirrel challenged us. I killed him. Now I need my reward for it. But with that said, Pat, uh the question that we have here to end the show today, who steps up as the leader today? I know we talked about who has the most to prove and we that was kind of more uh uh statistically and stuff like that, but like you mentioned a little bit during that segment, you need a leader on the court. We haven’t really had I think the closest thing on this team that we’ve had to somebody who’s shown leadership is Io Dumu. And it’s kind of hard to do that when you’re the and not to say that Iowa is gonna have a big role, but it’s kind of hard to be the leader at being a bench player in the six-man role. Like I think that you do need somebody in that starting lineup to to to kind of stand out as the leader. Now, teams like this, you look at like the coach to maybe be the leader when you don’t have that defined leader, but we know Billy Donovan kind of he empowers his players in that way. Who do you think becomes the leader on this team? Denon Terry. No. Uh, bro, I was like, Pat then lost it. Pat lost the plot. You lost the You said it so confidently, too. No. Um, I mean, who do I want to be the leader? I say Josh Giddy. Okay. Um, I think I think we saw him holding people very accountable last season and that’s something that the Bulls haven’t had in a while or it was kind of like I’m not going to say they haven’t had it in a while because I do think Demar D. Roza was very willing to hold people accountable. I think Dear was also just very willing to go, “Okay, y’all not going to do it. Just give me the ball.” Yeah. Like get out of my way. And and I don’t think that works as well to me if you’re going to when you see those teams that, you know, you start to look at some of the talent and you go, “Okay, like it’s not top tier talent, but for some reason they continue to find a way uh to get into the playoffs, to get into deep playoff runs.” Um, it usually is kind of that point guard type of guy who’s like, I’mma put y’all all in a position. I just need y’all to run with me. And I think that’s what Josh Giddy can be. Um, if you can find a way to do that this season, I think you’re in a you may be in a better bull season, bull scenario than we thought that this team could be in because if that happens early on, it truly is just going to be all right, whatever Josh say do. Right. And I think an undertalked about person who was great at that and where you you don’t got to be the most talented player on the tape. Rajan Rondo was clearly the fourth guy on that team. Mhm. But nothing operated without Rondo. Yep. Nothing move big on Nobody was in position without Rondo. So Mis can be the most talented player on this team. Kobe can be the best scorer on this team. B can be the dog in the post on this team. I think that you dominate if Josh Giddy is the one telling all of y’all where to go. Now, okay, we know that Josh Giddy as a playmaker is great. Do you do you think Josh Giddy has the per like cuz Rond’s personality very much so was Yeah. Kevin Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce. Yeah, they’re Hall of Famers. They’re great, but uh I I need you to be here on I need you to be here on offense. I need you to do this. Do you think Giddy has that type of personality to where he will actually direct like tell him like, “No, this is where you you you messed up here. This is where I need you to be with the ball.” Yeah. I think we saw it last year and it was on the defensive end. You know what? You make a great point. There were absolutely times of that. But go ahead. Like like hearing seeing Josh Giddy cuss people out for like defensive mistakes was like what the heck? But I also feel like a right of passage everybody at least on this team has cussed out VC once for for not being where he needed to be. deficiently. That’s just one thing that just everybody does. Like you got to cuss out V once for not sliding his feet. Exactly. Um but no, like I just I thought Giddy last season like he really showed that in the second half of the season and and you know we talk about that Laker comeback. He had a moment there. when we talk about, you know, the the Laker game where the Bulls end up winning that game and going I think that was in LA that they dominated like that was we were up 30 and Josh Giddy was like you can’t miss this slide yelling that might as well like there were all of these moments where it was small things but I think they lead to bigger things and I think it leads to a team that’s being held accountable. I think it leads to a team that it it leads to a team that grows to respect you. You know what I mean? And I think that’s what where the leadership comes from. It’s not just going out there and being able to put everybody in a position and put up the points. It’s about do you have the respect of your teammates? And if Josh Giddy can earn that respect to the point where they go, Josh tell us stuff and it just work. That’s kind of how it looked by the end of last season. Like we just we follow whatever he’s saying. It just works. I think that puts the Bulls in a situation where now you’ve got a team that believes in each other and believes that the guy who’s running the show, the guy who has the ball in his hand more times than not is going to help you go out there and win game. Yeah, great point there. And I Giddy’s in a position where he is going to have the ball in his hands enough he’s going to be operating offense. He’s in a spot where naturally that if he steps up as a leader this year, things are just going to flow better. Um, so I think that’s a great place for him to be in. I I’d like to see M start showing some leadership aspects too. Like I again much like I said with with him making the you know with the most app to prove. I’m not expecting it all to happen in year two. He’s going to have a lot added to his plate this year. I think he’s going to do some more playmaking. He’s going to have you know a bigger scoring load. But as as he he sets into those things, I want to start seeing some leadership qualities because I think Modis is somebody who he has the fire. If that fire turns into leadership as well, I think that’s going to be a good thing to motivate this team also as we go forward. Modus might be Draymond though. That’s which isn’t a lack of leadership, but I feel like Modus might be like, “Hey, you messing up what we doing. I’ll punch you in the face.” Phone on phone on phone. Great. Uh, I had nothing else on that. I think that I think we I think we solved it on that one. I think we summed it up. Shout out Mariah Mills. Appreciate y’all for tuning in to show love as always. 1. Mr. Haize… I know dude is your guy, but I can't hold with his takes. 1, Coby has been inconsistent because his roles have been inconsistent. On leadership…. 2 years ago with Demar, and Zach still on the team, he called Cobys voice on this team, the leadership that was required. It was in the huddle, in the heat of a game the bulls fought back in and won! Last year after the Zach trade,, Vuc, Giddey, and most of the team through in the towel, hence the 10 game loosing streak. Again Billy stated on numerous occasions it was Cobys leadership that rallied the team and kept them together the last 25 games. Coby is Billy guy. We don't have to question who the leader is. Furthermore they're not, I repeat they're not building around Giddey, they're building around Coby… he's not going anywhere, they are going to pay him, and depending on how Coby does individually, and the team collectively, look for them to go as high as $40 million per year.

  2. Giddey will lead the team as the Bulls floor general. Matas will be the heart and soul of this team as a great two way player. Night in and out Coby will continue to be the Bull’s leading scorer. I just hope that Coby will be more consistent.
