LA Kings dump Ducks in preseason opener. Turcotte led the way. Who else looked good?

I’ve worked at sports media for the past 30 years. is also one of the co-hosts of the Puck Podcast, a weekly NHL review show now in its 20th year of putting out shows and a passionate LA Kings fan for over 30 years. The Kings preseason schedule is now underway. On Sunday, the Kings posted a 3-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks in the annual Empire Classic in Ontario. Uh it’s great to get to talk about a actual game. Uh even though it’s preseason uh but uh never a bad thing to win a game. That’s why they keep score. Uh but the result admittedly less important than the performances from the players, specifically the Kings players who might be looking to make a roster spot, might be looking to crack the starting lineup. uh what was their performance like and how will it impact how they will start the season? That’s the big question. And I will say certainly from a team standpoint, just to start that off, I thought it was a very positive first step for the Kings. When you look at the big picture, I don’t see anything not to be encouraged about as far as what the Kings did in that first preseason game. First and foremost, everyone came out of it healthy. So, that’s the most important thing. Uh, and we’re going to get more into the individual stories, but as far as a broad picture from this very first preseason game, good to see the Kings win. Good to see them put on a good show. Good to see them play well in front of the uh all the Kings fans there in Ontario uh where a lot of those players uh kind of started their career. Guys like Alex Affair very briefly, uh Alex Turkot, Quinton Biffield certainly saw time uh in Ontario. So players that they’re familiar with from the recent past, also players that will be playing for the rain this year. So just a very positive first step for the LA Kings. I’m not saying plan a parade. I’m just saying we can only judge by what has happened so far. And what has happened so far is one preseason game that the Kings played pretty much top to bottom. Very well in, got the win. You know, throw that on there as well. But a lot of players, I think, for the Kings came out of this game feeling pretty good about the way the season has started. We’re going to get into all those players of note uh going forward here now, but I do want to start off by just giving you who played in the game in case you may not know. Uh we had a top line of Quinton Biffield centering Alex Lefarier, his normal winger on the second line for the Kings and Joel Arma was on their wing. A little bit surprising. Um Kevin Fiala not a part of this. I’m guessing as a veteran player, maybe he gets a little more leeway in picking and choosing how many preseason games he wants to play in. Joel Arma a new king. They want to try and get him acclimated to some of his new teammates, things like that. So, not the uh role Army is going to see much of playing on a quote unquote top line. He’ll be on the fourth line for the Kings, but he was in this sense as far as the most veteran player in the lineup for the Kings. Uh playing on the top line, Joel Arma. Second line of Alex Turkot, Jeff Malot, and Liam Greenree. You had a third line centered by Samuel Helenius with Akquil Thomas and Andre Lee. So, three kind of bubble guys to make the roster for the Kings all in the same line. and then a fourth line of Glenn Goden, Martin Cromiac, and Logan Brown. As far as the defense go, you had uh a pairing, a top pairing of Jacob Oar and Brandt Clark. Obviously, Brandt Clark will be heavily factored into the Kings season this year. We think Mr. is a bubble guy. Uh so is Kyle Burroughs, who’s on the second pairing with Yakob D’vorak, who’s going to be an AHL player. And then two young juniors guys who were teammates of the London Knights, Jared Willie and Henry Bustavich. The goalies were Carter George getting the start and the veteran Fenix CPPley was the backup. So there were five players from that list that will definitely be on the Kings opening night roster. Of course, barring injury. Four forwards, Quinton Biffield, Joel Arma, Alex Afarier, and Alex Turkot, and one defenseman, Brandt Clark. Of the four forwards, Biffield, Lefari, Arma have spots in the starting lineup locked down. Turkot likely does too, but what exactly his role is going to be will be determined. But right now, he’s getting that first chance to look like center the fourth line. Uh, as far as Brand Clark, he’s locked in on the blue line. U, but where Turkot plays is kind of the only question mark amongst the players that we know if they’re healthy, they’re going to be on the Kings opening night roster. Now, there were seven players for the Kings that are in competition for a roster spot or maybe even a possible spot in the starting lineup. Jeff Malot, Samuel Helenius, Akil Thomas, Andre Lee, and Liam Greenree as far as the forwards and Jacob Moar and Kyle Burroughs on defense. And there were eight players that pretty much have zero chance uh of playing on the Kings or being on the Kings opening night roster. Uh guys like Logan Brown, Glenn Goden, Martin Cromiac, those are the forwards. Uh defenseman Yakob D’vorak, and goalie Felix CPPley all expected to be in the AHL with the Ontario rain to start the season and almost certainly for the entire season. The only one exception could be Phoenix CPPley if there are a couple of injuries as far as the goalending goes, but Eric Portillo could be in the mix as well. But if there’s one player from that group that could possibly, we don’t want to see him, and that’s no disrespect to him, uh, but Phoenix CPPley is the only one I could see having the possibility of maybe being on the Kings lineup at some point in the season if there are injuries, which we hope there are not. And then there were three junior players that were on in the on the roster for the Kings in their preseason opener that will not be on the NHL roster or the AHL roster. uh defenseman and first round draft pick this year, Henry Bruce, who still has not signed his entry- level contract with the Kings. You’ve got his fellow teammate in London, defenseman Jared Woolly, and goalie Carter George. They will all be returning to their junior team for this season. So, let’s start off by talking about how the guys played who are going to be on the Kings roster and likely will be in the starting lineup. And let’s start with the obvious one and that’s Quinton Biffield. He was the most talented player on the ice in this game. Certainly in terms of his NHL experience and what his off offensive upside is. The Ducks had some young, you know, former first round picks, but those guys are still learning to be NHL players. They’re not, I don’t believe, at the ceiling of Quinton Biffield. Um, but for Q, I thought he looked fantastic. uh flying all around the ice. As far as the most skilled moves by any player in this game, it was definitely Quinton Biffield uh moving around defenders, uh making passes, getting shots. Biffield has looked very good in training camp. He looked very good in this game. And I think the only thing I hope to see going forward is him playing with the same attitude and edge during the season that we saw in a game like this. Like clearly he’s the most confident guy on the ice. He knows he’s the best player out there and he played like it. He needs to have that almost arrogance, I think, when he plays at the NHL level, too. No, don’t be afraid to make those moves. Be creative. Be, you know, all the things that make you who you are. Um, so a very, very good opening preseason game for Quinton Bfield. I thought his linemate Alex Lefarier, who we are going to see playing with him uh during the regular season on that quote unquote second line, I thought he looked really good too. Um now he scored what turned out to be the gamewinner in the third period. A short-handed goal with the game tied 1-1. Lefaria made a very strong move on the boards to escape a Ducks defender. Uh skates it into the zone, passes it into Alex Turkot on a two-on-one. Turkot goes strong to the net, tries a backhanded shot. Save is made, but Lefarer crashes the net, puts it in, gives the Kings the two-1 lead, and that’s the game-winning goal. And just a great job of Lefar starting to play with skill and strength, uh, being aggressive, going hard to the net. I could see Alex Lefarer scoring a lot of goals like that this year, playing with Biffield and Fiala. They’re going to do a lot of the heavy lifting and the skilled work, but he can be opportunistic, jump up in plays, be aggressive, and score goals like that. So, uh, great great game for both Biffield and Lefari. Their linemate Joel Arma, frankly, didn’t do a lot. Didn’t have any points. He had one shot on goal. He was okay, but didn’t really stand out and just probably not in the normal position that he usually finds himself in playing with a couple of really talented offensive-minded players. Um, so then not much to take away from Army other than just to get some some work in. Alex Turkot had a very strong game. He was named the number one star of the game. He had a goal and an assist. Already mentioned the nice move he had to the net putting it on net and Lefarer follows it up for the goal. Uh Turkot also scored the King’s first goal of the game on a back door tap in on a nice pass from Brandt Clark. Turkot a couple of other good scoring chances as well. Thought he did okay in the faceoff circle as he’s making that sort of transition back to the center position where he grew up playing. Um he did have one bad turnover. It led to an oddman rush, but other than that, I thought Alex Turkot looked really, really good, and I thought a first step, a good first step for him trying to win that fourth line center position. Uh, more positive news regarding how the Kings performed in their preseason opener, and we’ll also talk about those bubble players that are trying to make the roster. We continue to break down a lot of positives from the Kings preseason opener, a 3-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks in Ontario this past Sunday. I thought another positive for the Kings was another player that the Kings are relying on this season to take that next step, much like Quinton Biffield, and that’s defenseman Brandt Clark. I thought he was very strong on both ends of the ice. showed that creativity that we’re all really excited to see more of flying around the ice. Uh he had a couple of great moves around a defender before setting up Alex Turkot for the tap-in goal on the first goal of the game. Um Turkot got the finish, but Clark made that play happen with the moves around the defenders, being creative and and knowing how to get the puck on net the way he does, get it into dangerous scoring areas. He does that very very well. also had a really nice scoring chance not long after that opening goal as well. And what I said about Biffield, I feel is the same thing for Clark. He showed confidence. He showed aggressiveness in this first preseason game. He needs to play like that going forward into the regular season as well. Be a little cocky. Have confidence in your skills. When he does that, he seems to be a very creative and above average type of player. He was a plus two in this game. Uh tied to the team lead in that department. The Kings only had one power play opportunity, so we didn’t get to see Brand Clark kind of running a power play, which uh he can do well. But I thought a very very solid first game for Brandt Clark. Um certainly there’s nothing from this game that you would take anything away from other than be encouraged that Brandt Clark can be uh a special player for the Kings starting this year. Hopefully he gets the opportunity playing on that second pairing. Jim Hiller did say afterwards um when talking about you know some of the players uh that you know Brent Clark had played well also mentioned Alex Turkot when we’re talking about players playing certain positions that they want to give him a good run at center was the quote so we’re talking about guys making the roster we’re talking about guys fitting specifically I did want to mention that quote from Jim Hiller about Alex Turkov that they said they’re going to give him a basically a really good long look at playing at the center position Um, as far as Clark again, he was paired up defensively with Jacob Moar, who’s a bubble player trying to make the roster as the extra defenseman. I would say that Movar didn’t do anything negatively in this game. He did have a secondary assist on the Turkot goal. Like Clark, he was a plus two in this game, but just played his typical reliable defensive game, and I thought he looked just fine. Jeff Meot continues to kind of surprise me. Um, of course, he came in kind of out of nowhere to fill Tanner Jano’s role last year when he got hurt and he played the rest of the season and he played the entire playoffs on that fourth line. And now it appears that the coaching staff is giving him the first shot to do the same thing as far as filling in for Cory Perry because of the injury. I thought Malot looked very solid in this game. Uh, he looked pretty comfortable playing on the line with Turkot and Greenree. He set Turkot up for a couple of scoring chances. Um, I thought Malot could have been maybe a little bit more physical in this game because I think that’s the role he’ll play with the Kings. Um, but look, this is a guy who doesn’t have a ton of NHL experience, but he has a lot of pro hockey experience. He’s been a minor leager for a long time. He’s an older, more mature player. I think a guy like that knows his role. He’s really appreciative of just getting a chance to be in the NHL. he’s going to do absolutely anything you tell him to do just so he can stay in the NHL and he did that in this game. So again, it looks like he is the front runner to fill in for Perry to start the season. And if you were looking for something to change that fact, that didn’t happen in this game. The only negative was he did take a couple of penalties. The Kings did kill both of them off, so that didn’t really impact the game. But I thought Jeff Malot had a very, very solid game. didn’t do anything at all to me to dissuade the coaching staff from giving him kind of that leg up in being the the guy replacing Corey Perry to start the season. Akil Thomas, I I think he’s on the bubble for a roster spot, but I thought he was very noticeable in this game. A few nice plays. Uh good solid overall game. No points, but he had some hits. Had some nice plays. Um now he will probably need to show a little bit more. I would think to make the Kings roster to kind of unseat Jeff Malot or maybe be the extra forward. It’s possible. I thought this was a good first step for Aquille. I’ve mentioned that it seemed like with his lack of playing time last year, maybe he had somehow fallen out of favor with the coaching staff, but I do think it’s worth pointing out that after the game, Jim Hiller did single out Akil Thomas uh and talked about his solid play. I thought Andre Lee had a pretty good game. uh scored an empty net goal to ice the win, make it uh 3-1. Had some hits, had some nice plays, was noticeable. Um I thought an encouraging first game for him, likely an uphill battle for Andre Lee to make the opening night roster, but I would say he didn’t do anything in this game that would decrease his chances of having a shot at maybe getting that last roster spot for forwards. But I think he is a bit of a long shot. While Jim Hillard pointed out he didn’t think any of the quote unquote bubble guys played poorly, he thought they all played pretty well. If there was somebody I was going to pick that I was disappointed in, it’s probably too strong of a word, it might be Samuel Helenius. Um, he played center in this one. Um, but really didn’t do a lot. Now, he did get in a fight and I’ll give him credit for that. Had a nice little scrap with one of the Ducks players. Um, pretty much an even fight. But, you know, look, respect for anybody who is willing to do that kind of a role. And that’s it. It’s it’s worth something. But just I did I didn’t think he had a very I like to use the word noticeable game. He was out there. He was skating around, you know. I think he had like one scoring opportunity and I don’t even know if he got the shot on net or not, but he was just kind of out there. I I think for a guy like him, he needs to be more physical. He needs to make sure he’s in on the play physically, and he didn’t do much of that in this game. So, if there was one guy that I had to kind of point out that I thought didn’t really help himself, and again, he wasn’t terrible or anything, but I didn’t think Sammy Helenius did as much as guys like uh Andre Lee and Jeff Meot and Akil Thomas in this game. And finally, Kyle Burroughs in that battle with Jacob Ovar to be the extra defenseman. I thought he had an okay game, but the the one thing that Burroughs unfortunately will be known for in this game was the I think it was the first or second shot of the game. He’s standing at the side of the net. It goes off him and into the net. That was the Duck’s only goal of the game. You know, it’s bad luck on his part. Uh unfortunate, but other than that, he really wasn’t very recognizable. Didn’t do a lot. He I mean, he was fine. Certainly there were no big errors or mistakes um that we saw from from Burroughs, but uh I would say if you’re looking to score, you know, like a fight, Moar versus Burroughs, I would say after this game, advantage Moar uh in that battle. The future in net for the LA Kings continues to look very bright. Also, what about Liam Green’s chances of making the opening night roster? All right, continuing thoughts from the LA Kings preseason opener. A 3-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks. Great to see actual game action and I think if you’re a Kings fan, you were pretty happy with the way uh the Kings played all around uh in this game. Little bit of a surprise maybe uh that the starting goalie in this game was Carter George who is thought to be the goalie of the future for the LA Kings and he continues to impress. I thought he had a fantastic game carrying over what he did in the Golden State rookie faceoff when he beat the Ducks with a big performance. Uh 26 saves in this win over Anaheim. And as I mentioned, the only goal he let in was one that went off his teammate. Um so Carter George is just he’s not spectacular, but that is a huge compliment. His game is very reserved and quiet, but he’s always in control. Uh, his positioning is always solid. As illustrated, if you if you saw the highlights of this game or the game itself, he made a save when he was looking the other way. He had lost where the puck was, but he was positioned properly and the puck hit him and didn’t go in even though he wasn’t tracking it. And that goes to show show you how fundamentally sound he is that he, you know, look, the hockey puck can move very fast and can take some funny bounces off of whatever body parts, skates, who knows? So, the more a goalender is properly positioned uh in the net, the more chances that something, you know, that is unexpected that happens that he’ll still be able to get a piece of. And I thought that was a great illustration uh of of what Carter George offers. Fundamentally sound, always in the right place, a very quiet style. He’s not flailing all over the place, but he’s always in good position. Square up on the shooter, doesn’t allow rebounds, just continues to look every bit the part of the future number one goalie of the LA Kings. Now, there is news on Carter George. He was loaned, which is the word, to his junior team on Monday. And now he’s loaned because he is under contract by the LA Kings. They have signed him to his entry- level contract. So, uh, we knew he was going back to his junior team. I would imagine they wanted to do this now and that’s why he got the start in that game on Sunday because they were going to send him back to his junior team. They wanted him to get a start here before he went back there. And uh I mean he’s just looked solid in every opportunity as a member of the Kings. Uh last year in the AHL he gets two start for the rain. One of them a shut out 2 and 0. Looks good in the uh the rookie face off. Looks good in this preseason game. So uh you know he’ll go back to junior. He’ll continue to work on his game. I’m sure we’ll see him at the World Junior Championships for Canada. and he’s still he’s on track, but he’s still a couple years away, which is in line as it stands right now to maybe be the king’s number one goalie in three years from now. Now, this coming season, he’ll be in juniors. Next season, as long as everything continues on track, he’ll be playing with the Ontario rain. And then after that, who knows? Maybe he has a shot at being the King’s number one goalie. If not, maybe he’s the number two goalie and they maybe Darcy Keer is still playing at a high level and even though he’s older, they’ll sign him to a one-year deal and extend him because both Keer and Anton Forsber’s contracts will be up in two years. So, they’ve got the net for two more years this season and next season. Carter George will be in juniors this year. You would think a a solid season of AHL hockey and then maybe maybe he gets his opportunity at that point, but like I said, Carter George looks every bit the part of being a number one goalie in the NHL in the not too distant future. Liam Greenree, uh, I thought he was noticeable on a couple of nice plays. He got absolutely robbed out of a power play goal on a really nice save by Ducks goalie Vleo, who is an NHL goalie. He’s going to be the number two in Anaheim this season. So, Green Tree getting robbed by an NHL caliber goalender, unfortunately. Um, he also had a nice spin move in the King zone led to a two-on-one chance. Uh, unable to score on that, but it was a good scoring chance. So, um, couple of nice opportunities I thought playing on a line with Turkot and Malot, a couple of an NHLer and a potential NHL ever, uh, NHL player, pretty good position to be in. Um, I will have to say though at this point at this point I think it would be a surprise if Green Tree is on the opening night roster. Obviously there’s still time and injuries are always a factor, but it looks like Jeff Malot is locked in or at least that’s his position to lose on the wing filling in for Cory Perry. And I don’t think they would keep Liam Greenree to sit in the press box. He would if he played really well and nobody else had kind of asserted themselves. Maybe they give him that look on the left side in place of Corey Perry, but as it looks right now, and things could change, kind of looks like Jeff Malot might be kind of entrenched in that spot. We’ll see. But a a good game uh for Liam Greenree. So, finally, I did want to mention many solid uh things for the Kings. Um we talked about players that are going to be on the Kings. We talked about players going to be on the rain. Couple of the junior guys though on defense were a pair and that would be Henry Bustvich, the first round pick of the Kings this year and his teammate with the London Knights, Jared Woolly. They were on the third pairing on defense in this game preseason game. And I didn’t think they looked out of place at all. And Jim Hiller said afterwards, “It’s hard to believe those are two junior defensemen.” So, I’m not sure what the timeline is for those guys, but I would not be surprised at some point if those two guys are on the blue line for the LA Kings in a few years down the road. But got a little fun glimpse of them being together in this preseason game and I thought they both looked pretty good. Um, I did want to point out a couple of things to keep in mind as we talk about this opening preseason game. Um, I will say both of the NHL coaching staffs are running these games. You might not know that, but Jim Hiller was on the bench along with his top assistants DJ Smith and Newell Brown. Joel Quinnville was on the bench coaching the Ducks. So, the NHL coaches are coaching in these preseason games. It’s not the AHL coaches. Um, I did mention Bill Huso was the goalender for the Ducks. Again, he’s the number two goalie. He’s an NHL caliber goalie. Um, but I do think it’s fair to point out that this Ducks team was a pretty young team as far as the lineup they put out there. Now, they were a young team anyway, but I talked to my buddy Doug the Ducks fan. He told me that in this game, three players that were on the roster for this preseason game for the Ducks are going to be NHL regulars. Gothier, Puling, and Michikov. He said there’s three other guys that are fighting for a roster spot, may or may not be on the NHL roster this year. So, while the Kings didn’t have all their big-time veterans either, and the Kings are a much more veteran team, I would point out to be fair, the Kings had more of an NHL experience lineup in this game than the Ducks did a little bit. So, I don’t think that taints the performance at all. But, I think it’s also fair to kind of point that out that the Kings probably were a little bit more professional experience than maybe the Ducks lineup was. And and I would say that that probably did show a little bit as well. All right. If you liked me talking about a game and talking about how players performed and how that could affect the season, uh, I certainly liked it a lot. I hope you did, too. And you’re in luck because guess what? Our next two shows will be the exact same thing. The Kings have preseason game number two coming up on Tuesday in Vegas against the Golden Knights. And then the very next day on Wednesday, preseason game number three down in Anaheim against the Ducks. Both those games are 7:00 faceoffs, LA time. Uh the game on Tuesday in Vegas will be on the NHL network for those of you that have that. Uh it’ll also be streaming, I believe, on lings.com if you don’t have the NHL network. And also you can listen to it on the 710 ESPN app or I believe test terrestrial radio as well. But those are the ways that you can check in if you wish on the Kings second preseason game, Kings Golden Knights in Vegas, coming up 700 pm Pacific time on Tuesday. After that game’s over, I will record Tuesday’s show reacting just like we did from the preseason game on Sunday for the Kings. It’ll be interesting to see what’s the roster they put out up out there and how that goes. So, looking forward to that. Looking forward to talking about more preseason hockey coming up in our next two shows. 1. positive was every player executed well.

last season, the Kings spent camp on the road and were playing a new system.

this season the Kings only have a few minor system changes.

saw some of the new concepts implemented in the rookie game, and a bit more refined in the first preseason game.

the Reign plays the same system as the Kings so i mainly just concentrated on seeing how they all execute.

this game, at least, eveyone executed well. even the guys that will play for the Reign this season.

  2. Everyone is so quick to hand the crease over to George but Hammer is going to have something to say about that.

Both goaltending blue chips have franchise goalie written all over them, but we gotta get hammer into the organization first and sort it out. It’s Quick vs Bernier part II.
