The Miami Dolphins Have A HIDDEN GEM That They Are NOT USING!
[Music] The Miami Dolphins are not using a hidden gem on their roster and it’s time to unleash this hidden gem. I am Nick Roloff. This is Dolphins Today by Chad Sports. Who is that hidden gem? Well, it’s no one other than sixthround running back Ali Gordon. The Oklahoma State product showcased his abilities in the preseason, in training camp, and he’s looked extremely efficient so far through three weeks of the regular season, yet Miami is still not using him as much as they should. And it’s kind of sad because the way he has ran the football, his athleticism, his physicality, it’s the perfect complimentary back to Devon Chan. and he is a running back that looks to be solving a lot of the short yardage disasters the Dolphins have had over the last three years. I mean, we saw it in that first drive against Buffalo on Thursday Night Football. They converted a couple of third and ones, a fourth and short because they just said, “Yeah, here you go, Ali. You’re 6’2, 225. You’re piling through these arm tackles and picking up first downs.” But the issue is they’re not using them. Ali Gordon through three weeks has just appeared in 34 of the 165 snaps, less than 30%. That is unacceptable for a player who has looked as talented and productive as he has. More coming up, but if you want Ali Gordon to play more and are with me, hit that thumbs up icon. I want our voices to be heard to the masses and we can make that happen. Let’s come together as a collective unit and showcase why we believe Ali Gordon should see the field more often. Well, first of all, how about this? When you look at Ali Gordon’s PFF grades, and I am doing it this way. I filtered out every running back, and you need to at least have 10 carries. Ali Gordon has 12 carries this so far this season. 63 running backs through three weeks have 10 carries or more. Out of those 63, PFF has graded Ali Gordon as the 24th best running back overall, factoring in running, blocking, receiving, the whole nine yards. But when you just factor in running the football, he is the ninth highest graded running back out of the 63. So PFF very kind to Gordon in the limited opportunities he has had. And the reason why I have really fell in love with Ali Gordon is that he is just a physical football player and that is something Miami has desperately needed. Ever since Mike McDaniel became head coach of this football team in 2022, it’s been a lot of fun at times to watch this offense be explosive. But that’s the point that Mike McDaniel has brought over and I’m making here. They’ve been explosive yet a finesse team. So when it gets to cold weather games, it gets to shorted situations. They have struggled because they are not physical. They only rely on their speed and finesse. It’s something Miami fans have realized been an issue for this team over the past couple of years. But the way Ali Gordon has run the football ever since being a member of the Dolphins and us seeing him on the field for the first time in early August in the preseason games, it’s been evident that this guy can change the way Miami operates in shortarded situations because of how physical he is. And if you look at how he was used in week three, which by the way was his most used week of the season, he got 15 snaps in nine carries in week three, almost tripling his touches when you look at week one and week two and doubling his snap count. Well, he was the fifth highest graded running back in week three out of running backs that got at least 10 snaps. He was ninth in missed tackles forced with four, eighth in yards after contact and four and eighth in first downs with four. It’s just so impressive. And if you take away just in week three and look at running backs who have had at least 10 carries and their yards after contact on the season through three weeks, Ali Gordon ranks ninth in the entire NFL. There’s about 64 running backs that qualified there. So, he has in some of these PFF grades, some of these advanced metrics, ranked in the top 15, top 20 in almost every statistical category. Yet, Miami still does not use him more than 30% of the time. It is just a wasted opportunity. Like, you’re leaving valuable production on the bench. There needs to be a way to get Gordon into more personnel packages and get him on the football field. So, what say you? Are you with me? After a little bit more of explanation, should the Dolphins play OG2 more? Type Y for yes or type N for no? I do understand to a degree why Ali Gordon may not be seeing as much snaps as we think he should be based off his ability to be productive in the run game. And it all starts with his inability to pass protect. And this is a issue that I would say 90% of rookie running backs face. When running backs make the jump from collegiate football to professional football, the number one thing that they always struggle with is blocking edge rushers and linebackers coming off the edge and coming on blitzes because they are simply faster and more physical at the NFL level. Well, PFF has graded Ali Gordon through three weeks at in pass blocking at 25.0. And when you watch the tape as well, it’s not great either. and he actually made a couple crucial mistakes in that week 2 loss against the New England Patriots to where if he makes the couple pickups and pass doesn’t have a false start penalty late in the fourth quarter, you never know that game might ultimately turn out differently. But the Dolphins are 0 and3 and I am not going to dwell on the pass too much with his pass blocking mistakes. I am willing to live with the growing pains of Ali Gordon learning how to pass block to get him on the football field more because this is not a small running back we’re talking about. We’re talking about a 6’2 225 back. He is going to be able to lay some physical blocks on edge rushers and blitzing linebackers. And if you need Ali Goran to chip an edge rusher before running into the flat on a route, he’ll be able to deliver a very solid blow. It’s not like I’m asking 5’8 Devon Achan to do this. No, this is a much bigger physical running back. And I’m willing to live with the growing pains because what I saw in week three against the Bills was too good to deny. He got nine carries in 15 snaps. That ratio of touching the football to snaps is astronomically high. It’s almost too high to where it becomes predictable. And I want to make sure the Dolphins are aware of that and kind of don’t just give Gordon the ball when he’s on the field, but averaging 4.2 yards per carry, reaching pay dirt, and forcing four miss tackle. Yeah, that’s elite stuff. Like the blend of physicality and explosiveness that Ali Gordon has is exactly what Dolphins have fans have been clamoring for over the past couple of years. We all love Devon Chan. We all believe he’s a top 10, top 15 running back in football. I do for sure. But his limitations are there because he is so small. He can’t really dominate in between the tackles and short yardage situations. Ali Gordon can. And because Achan is so small, you wonder about his long-term career ability to stay healthy if he takes on so many hits. So, why not try to prolong his explosiveness, prolong his career by taking back his snaps a little bit, taking back his uh touches and giving them to Ali Gordon. It makes a lot of sense to help the Dolphins now, but also in the future. More coming up, but join the channel. Join the family here at Dolphins Today. Daily news, rumors, and analysis. 100% free. Subscribe today for more around the Miami Dolphins. And I want to look here at the stats for each running back through the first three weeks. When it comes to running the football, we are not taking into account Devon Achan’s receptions. Achan is still a little bit more efficient. 4.9 yards per carry, but Ali Gordon has reached per on a carry. He also has forced four missed tackles. eightchan with eight, but that’s the one area to where if Gordon gets 30 carries, you’re going to see about 11 missed tackles forced for Ali Gordon compared to eight chance eight if you averaged it out. And when you look at Ali Gordon, and this is not filtering out any running backs, by the way, his EPA per rush this season is plus 1.7. That is 13th best in the National Football League. Like I said, that accounts for every single player that has run the football. Ali Gordon’s EPA per rush is 13th best. His rushing yards over expected per attempt, by the way, is 0.04 yards. That’s 31st best. So, think about every running back that has gotten a carry or even every quarterback that’s gotten a carry. Gordon ranks in the top 32 in rushing yards over expected per attempt and EPA per rush. I truly do believe that if Ali Gordon was given the same opportunities as Devon Han merely running the football, Ali Gordon’s not going to be as effective as a pass catcher. We know that. But I think we would see an ultra productive OG2 in the running game. I think he could be a bellcow back in the NFL. Maybe I’m drinking the Kool-Aid because he’s maybe one of the only positive things that this Dolphins football team has. But I enjoy watching him every time he has the ball in his hands. And I do think he could be a legit lead running back in the NFL. We see late sixth rounders and UDFAs become this for their respective teams all of the time. And if you look at the two running backs Miami has running in between the tackles. It is night and day. And we’ve talked about this. Han, smaller finesse, speedy back, not gonna have a ton of success inside the tackles going up against the big boys of linebackers and defensive linemen. That’s why you leave it to Ali Goran who’s the 6’2 225 back. How about this though? Even though Han is pretty efficient, 5.9 yards per carry, Ali Goran’s averaging 5.6 6 yards per carry in between the tackles, 3.9 positive EPA per rush, and a successful percentage of 85.7. It is unbelievable how well Ali Gordon has run the football in between the tackles. One of the most efficient running backs in between the tackles in the entire NFL. And I want to make this clear. This is not a knock on Devon Han, but Han and his ability to impact the Dolphins is more or less on the perimeter and as a receiver. Han to me is a weapon, not a running back. And I know that’s his position, but I don’t think you can say, “Yeah, we’re going to give Han 20 25 carries a game.” It’s just simply not something that you’ll see. What Achan should probably be looking for is 10 to 15 carries a game and five to seven receptions a game. That’s kind of where Achan lives. But Ali Gordon has the physical profile to handle a 15 20 handoff carry workload. And I think Miami should try to establish the run way more than they have. And I know game script against the Patriots and Colts dictated a lot more throws than runs, but if you are able to create a wellbalanced offensive attack, I think we should see the Dolphins have at least 25 carries a game. And I’d like to see maybe Devon Chan and Gordon split that. Like you’re not going to see snap percentage split, but purely carry base. 12 carries for Han, 13 for Gordon. Then you get Han the ball and space in the receiving game. I think that’s the best way to use both your talented running backs. We’re going to round out the show here in a little bit, but take advantage of the rivalry collection being on sale. The Dolphins wearing their rivalry jerseys for the first time in week four against the Jets on Monday Night Football. You can grab a hoodie, grab a hat, a jersey of your choice. Grab yours today. If you order it on today, Tuesday, you might be able to get it before Monday’s game. I’d also like to see the Dolphins experiment with having both Han and Gordon on the field together. And I think it is something that would work very well because of all of the positives Achan can bring to the field in terms of the receiving game. It’s not like you’re gonna bring them both on the field and not use them both. No, you’re using them both and they’re going to make the opposing defense think twice of like, okay, both of them on the field. It could be a handoff to Hchan. It could be a handoff to Gordon. It could be a passing play and Hchan goes out on a route. It could be a screenplay. Like, there’s just so many different things you can run with those two on the field together. And through three weeks of the season, we’ve only seen it five times. I think that is just unacceptable. I I really do mentioned it earlier in the show. 165 offensive snaps, only five of them have been shared of Achan and Ali Gordon. I don’t like that. And in those five yard five plays, these are the results of the play. Nine yard Devon Chan run. And fun fact, the play was actually a swing pass behind the line of scrimmage. They faked the handoff to Ali Gordon. They had the running the linebackers commit and stand still like oh we got to respect the Ali Gordon Raj and then it was a quick pitch out to Han where he gets on the perimeter and picks up nine and that’s the exact thing you created space for Hchan on the perimeter because the linebackers in New England had to respect Ali Gordon potentially getting the football. Now you run that again and you see the linebackers float maybe a little bit towards Han hand off Gordon five yards six yards up the middle. Second time they shared the field together, it was an Ali Gordon screen pass where he went a little angle screen. He picked up five yards, couple incomplete passes, and then once again it was a Achan screen play, seven yard screen for the running back. So like I just think you see enough positivity out of these five plays to where you can see more snaps together. And Mike McDaniel actually talked about it on Monday in his uh press conference saying that it’s tough to get them both on the field together because if you’re creating a personnel package for that, you’re taking away a personnel package. And it’s like, well, you taking away snaps from Alec Engold, you’re taking away snaps from Malik Washington, Nick Westerini, a potential Darren Waller, Julian Hill. And what do I say to that? Abso fuckingutely. Why do I need to see Alec Kenold? No offense. He’s been awesome in his career in Miami. He’s a captain of this football team. But if I had to choose between a dual running back set of Achan and Ali Gordon or Alec Ingold their blocking, I’m going to choose the two running back set that creates more misdirection. I am if I have to choose between Julian Hill or Ali Gordon. Yeah, I’ll sacrifice not having a tight end. Like I I’m just sorry. like get your playmakers on the field together and see what can happen. Man, Dolphins offense hasn’t been the complete issue for the Dolphins through three weeks. They scored 27. They scored 21 and obviously the disaster in week one, but I would like to see these two share the field more because I think they could be special together as a duo. That’ll do it for this episode. More videos to come throughout the week as we get ready for NFL week four. We’ll have another video out later today, so subscribe, turn on notifications, and I’ll see you then. Go fence. [Music]
Ollie Gordon was drafted in the 6th round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and is the current RB2 on the Miami Dolphins depth chart. The Dolphins are 0-3, and are looking to make changes to start winning games, which could start by getting Gordon on the field more. Ollie Gordon has played 34 snaps, only had 12 carries, and despite this, has been one of the most efficient running backs in the NFL this season. Dolphins Today host Nic Rohloff believes Mike McDaniel NEEDS to get Ollie Gordon on the field more with De’Von Achane. This episode of Miami Dolphins Today, a Dolphins YouTube show, features more Dolphins news and Miami Dolphins rumors heading into NFL Week 4.

Your right
Absolutely! Freaking YYYYYYYY
Absolutely not! Ollie is a stud and needs to be saved for the next regime. Any small success will hurt the organization moving forward. It sucks, but we need to take our lumps NOW. We need to trade our garbage before the trade deadline and then send Greer and McDaniel down the road. Dolphins fans need to start demanding excellence instead of mediocrity..
I think the reason is they have to trust he will be able to pick up blitzes and blocking assignments. Once he shows that he can be trusted with those “off-ball” assignments. If not then everytime he goes in they will key in on him because they know he isn’t there to block
Miami couldn't whip it's way out of a wet paper bag
Jamar Gibbs is smaller and can pass block maybe we need better coaching
I love us to start Running 35 – 40 times again, reduce the Tua Factor, think it will make him better too, less pressure , higher confidence , we now have the backs to do it , love Ollie Gordon , good to see him more last game, but to your point we need More of him on the field , including on passing downs to help block
They have to start using him. He is a difference maker
Put him at rb 1 and put achane at the slot 💯 game changer
He's not a hidden gem. That guy is an obvious force that doesn't get use at all from my point of view. This is one of the main reasons why McDaniel has to go. Personnel decision making is bad.
Gordon was not a McDaniel pick. He was a Grier pick. So it’ll be awhile before he gets significant carries and they’ll blame it on the pass blocking as the excuse for the delay. If McDaniel had a concept of football, Gordon would be the main back and Achane would be the change of pace/scat back option. But, you know.
Put Ollie in the back and Achane in slot. Or Ollie as TE.
Already my favorite player on the team he has character and is ready to work even when we are down love the guy
Y, …..remember how successful the Tennessee Titans were when they had "Smash and Dash" with Chris Johnson and LenDale White!?! This is the new package the offense should b built around taken some of the pressure off of Tua and the passing game….complementary football!!!
Start with him , Devon is good, but I would go with power opening up.
When McDaniel took over, defenses had a tough time figuring him out. Now it’s us fans that have the hard time figuring him out
Yes
