Edmonton Oilers Sign Vasily Podkolzin To Three Year Extension
We got some breaking news from the Edmonton Oilers this morning. And while it’s not quite the signing we’re all waiting on pins and needles for, GM Stan Bowman did take care of what I would call a pretty important piece of business as they’ve signed forward Vasili Pud Coulson into a three-year contract extension worth a cap hit of $2.9 million. And again, Pud Coulson still has one more year on his current deal where he is playing for a bargain 1 million bucks. But I love that the Oilers are getting ahead of this contract. In the past, I’ve criticized them for being too slow to commit to players and then the player has a career year and then you’re stuck having to pay them based off that career year. Darnell Nurse, Evan Bard, these are both really good examples of that with Pud Coulson. They’re getting ahead of things a little bit. They very clearly believe in the player. The guys in the room believe in him. We heard Leon Drytle earlier in camp talk glowingly about why he loves to play with Vasili Pud Coulson. And I think what we saw last year during the playoffs is that even when he’s not on a line with number 29, he can still be a really impactful bottom six player. Last season, the goal scoring was not there for Pod Kohl’s and he only had eight goals in 82 games, but his shooting percentage was all the way down at 7% and he only shot 114 pucks. Go back to his rookie season in Vancouver, he scored 14 goals. He shot 12.2%. I think there is a lot more room for Vasili Podcoulen to grow and for him to hit an offensive ceiling. And if he’s going to play with Leon Dry settle this year, there’s a chance he scores north of 15 goals. And if he does that, then a contract extension next summer might have costed three and a half, $4 million. The Oilers lock in Pud Coulson at a very reasonable $2.9 million. And this isn’t a guy who’s 28, 29, 30 years old and his best days are behind him. He’s only 24. He doesn’t even turn 25 until next June. There are a lot of miles left on this body. This is a guy who can play in your top six, a guy who can play in your bottom six. He’s incredibly versatile and I think there is a ton of room for him to grow. Stan Bowman and company get a thumbs up A+ for me on this signing. Vasili Pod Coulson a threeyear deal that I think by year two, never mind year two. I think by year one this could look like a tremendous value for the Oilers. What’s up nation citizens? Podkolzin had many question marks coming into the season last year, however his hard working play style won over the fan base.
