Is Bo Nix HURTING Denver Broncos? | Colin Cowherd NFL Reaction

Okay, we’re not going in any particular order here because the two big ones, Bears, Cowboys, uh Rams, Eagles, uh we’ve discussed I’ll go with the Chargers beating the Broncos 23-20. Uh you know, it was Amario Hampton had his first touchdown. I one of the my takeaways in this game is that especially in the last several drives for both teams, Herbert’s talent shines and as I watch Bo Nicks because he had 61 college starts, John, he came into this league very close to his ceiling and I think we’ve seen it. Um, and as I watched them today, my takeaway is this is what he is. Where where I where I think with Herbert Harbaugh’s taken him to another level and and then Caleb Williams. But I I feel that with Trevor Lawrence, everybody’s waiting for the next pop. And this is what Trevor Lawrence is. He’s kind of a long strider. Um, gets balls batted down despite his size. Can miss some open things. Sees the field okay, not exceptionally. And I watched Bo Knicks today and he had a big play to Courtland Sutton, but again he was wide open. It was a blown coverage by the Chargers and he had a couple of really impressive scrambles, but I watched Herbert hit Keenan Allen on a huge play and and the the moments of the game where you needed great athletes to make great plays. I kind of feel like what Boicks is, this is it, and if you’re waiting for a jump, you’re not really going to get it. That was my takeaway watching this game today. Franklin had a drop to in the end zone that I, you know, would have been a touchdown, but uh there’s no disputing the two guys. I mean, to me, Justin Herbert is I mean, Patrick Mahomes is going to play a little bit later tonight, but he’s been right there with Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson is the best quarterbacks in the league so far. Do you notice they are throwing deep bombs to Quinton Johnson multiple a game telling unccork it and he missed him today on one but it at one point in time he made one catch again. Yeah he made but they they are throwing go routes and post routes to one and Herbert is letting it fly. I mean the play he made to Keenan Allen for uh the game tying touchdown was Josh Allen Mahomes. I mean that’s his Yes. Bo Nick Knicks doesn’t have that in the back. I thought this was a kitchen sink game for Denver. Chargers played what? Monday night on the road. A late push back because it was a seven o’clock kickoff. So what time whatever they get back to the offices 2 3 in the morning. You’re all thrown off. Monday shot cuz you played Tuesday you barely slept. You’re trying to get a game plan together. They are behind the eightball. Denver coming off a bad loss you think would be motivated had extra time and when they’re up 20 to 13 you’re like this is going to be a really impressive win for Payton and that’s what I thought and not that terrible of a loss by the Chargers like short week you didn’t even play that bad you’re missing Khalil Mack it’s not the end of the world and they found a way to win I mean you you called him what the greatest coach of all time he he’s in full control he’s beat every team in the division through three games their their defense is pretty dominant, you know. But John, it’s amazing. They had a blown coverage, the Courtland Sutton, but they went and drafted a couple corners in the fifth round. They have the stickiest secondary. I mean, cuz I think Denver’s got some pretty quick young weapons. It’s amazing. This was the worst defense in the league 20 games ago. The worst by a long shot. They are sticky. There’s just not a lot open. Well, it wasn’t. I mean, it’s probably, you know, toward the end of 2023 when they gave up what, 60 or 70 points to the Raiders on that Thursday night game with Brandon Staley, the night he was fired. I I wrote down is Derwin James, it’s early, the defensive player of the year. I mean, he’s on that path. I mean, the way they talk about him, how versatile he is for him that they’re tackling, you know, looking back like Harbaugh’s team, let’s say, with the 49ers, like of course they tackled well. They had Dante Hitner, they had Patrick Willis, Navaro Bowman, right? this team’s like who are these guys? You know, you know Derwin James and Khil Mack, but who are some of these and they are hitting like they’re the most physical defense in the league and Denver technically was that last year and it feels like the Chargers have already if not matched surpass them and we know they got the better quarterback, right? You could argue early in the season like Herbert’s every bit as good as Patrick Mahomes if not better the way he’s playing right now when you factor in the weapon. So you go, they got an elite quarterback, they got the best defense. We know they got an elite coach. Not just a coach, a coaching staff. How about I was thinking about this the other day is we’ve been hard over the years and rightfully so. Like Bellich’s coaching tree is atrocious. It’s like the opposite of like Bill Walsh’s underrated coaching tree and it it’s like an organization is the Ravens. You know, forever back in the day with Bilick, all the defensive coordinators and then with Harbaugh all the different guys. Now they got Jesse Men. Jesse Mentor is basically Mike McDonald 2.0 and Jim Harbaugh just took them from John and look at this guy. They create such great defensive coordinators that in a day and age where we go, we got to have an offensive guy and you’re the one beating that drum. You’re like, well, this guy’s so good, I might as well hire him to be my head coach. That’s how good their guys are. I mean, let’s face it, how’s this guy not going to be a head coach at the end of this year? I mean, he’s he’s basically just doing Mike McDonald again. And we saw Yeah, let’s look how good Mike McDonald is. I mean, Seattle looked really good through three games. Yeah. No, it’s um it was a gut check win. When you come out, you don’t have the prep time. You don’t play particularly well in the first half. Naji Harris, by the way, that thing, this thing has just not worked. He got the Fourth of July fireworks. He had eye damage, then he gets injured today. So, it’s like Hampton’s actually had a little bit of a life. I mean, a little bit. So, it it feels like, you know, they’re very lucky. They drafted Joe Alt, right? And everybody said receiver and then Slater gets hurt and Joe Alt’s been terrific. And then they bring in um you know Naji Harris and Hampton sort of start slow. The Naji Harris thing doesn’t work. So and then you know people kind of went is Hampton like a first round running back? The truth is they the guys they’ve drafted have worked. I mean they’ve drafted guys and they have needed them and they have delivered. And sometimes you also need I I don’t even want to say luck in a personnel move, but just something to work out in your favor. And listen, they broke up with Keenan Allen a year ago when they traded him and he was available and they brought him back. And that thing looks like an excellent pickup cuz Keenan Allen, I mean, through three weeks is making huge plays for him. their style. Now, technically right now they would have home games potentially, but if if they had to go if they end up the two or three seed and have to go on the road in the playoffs translates, right? Play defense, elite quarterback, run the ball, play in lowscoring ugly games like that works in January. You know what we always said about like Mike McDaniels in the Tua situation? Like this is not going to work in the playoffs when it gets cold. Harbaugh works in the playoffs when it gets cold. So, I I think their stuff is going to translate. Obviously, it comes down to health. I I do think it’s pretty important. And they also avoided disaster in that Khil Mack when he got injured. That moment on Monday night, you thought that he snapped his arm or something. Well, it turns out he might just miss a month and be okay. And you see him on the sideline, he’s got the thing on. Maybe if if he’s able to come back and be Khalil Mack that cuz I I I think that would have been a move like they could replace Slater because they had Alt. Like, you don’t replace that physical presence. So you get him back to go with Derwin James and their overall defensive presence. I I think whatever Harbaugh does with his quarterbacks, the the mental psychology that he plays of, you know, some people think it’s corny and hyperbolic or whatever, but he knows what he’s doing. You know, he’s he’s a little more intelligent when it comes to the motivation aspect and I think he gets credit for because Her Herbert I mean Herbert looks like John Elway or something right now in his prime. I mean, how how special is his Isn’t it crazy looking back that Tua Tonga Boa was drafted above Justin Herbert? That’s that’s one that’s going to age in time. Like, how did that happen? How do we sit in a draft room and put those two guys together and take this one over that one? Like, it’s it’s pretty cra cuz even the Chargers, I think, kind of said that we probably would have taken two over them, but like when you watch the two of them several years later, like this is a different stratosphere of player. Yeah. I mean, size matters. But I said it this week on FS1. How’s Bryce Young, Tua, Kyler Murray, Johnny Manzel? You know, you start looking at these guys. Russell Wilson, size matters. Herbert 6’5 hose, big arm, uh, physical player. I mean, it just I’m sorry. If if he put on 15 pounds, he could be a tight end in the league. It matters. His He’s just got so much horsepower. There was a play today. It was like third and nine with, you know, the if uh the Cardinals get the first down, they could probably ice the game. What happens? Fred Warner tips the ball. Kyler’s 5’9″ and and unlike Bryce, he’s an elite athlete, so he can make these crazy plays, but you’re sitting in a pocket when you’re 5’9, 510. It’s much harder to see. I know we went through this stretch where it’s like, “We love these 510 quarterbacks.” I like my guys to be 6’5 and run four sixes with huge arms. I I’ll take Justin Herbert. You can take the little guy. [Music]

What’s hurting the Broncos are 2 players on Defense that PFF has graded out as a F
I thought nix was drew brees. He is just not good.
Lmao. Average 3rd down distance was 1 yards. Idc who your qb is it’s going to be hard to win games with that. 10 penalties for 90 compared to 3 for 25. Maybe it’s not all just in Bo nix 🤷🏻♂️
The narrative of the Broncos changing week by week. Think Bo is great! Next week, Bo is not good. Next week Bo throws for 300 Bo is great. Next week Bo sucks. Next week, Bo is awesome.
Ugh
Tolesco has said on multiple occasions that they wanted Herbert since his jr. Year at Oregon. They were never taking tua. It was either Herbert or Isiah Simmons.
Nix will always be no more than the 3rd best QB in a division with Mahomes and Herbert. At least he's better than Geno Smith.
Colin Harbaugh hasn’t taken Herbert to another level. Herbert is the same as he’s always been. He’s not playing better. He just has a very competent roster and coach around him now. You’re overstating Herbert’s play. Herbert actually had a worse passer rating than Nix in that game. And last year Nix showed that he can do everything that Herbert can do.
Yes, but let’s see how the rest of the season goes. If Broncos had a more seasoned/experienced QB they probably beat the Chargers. Nix is still a super young player
Bo Nix will never be in the same tier as Justin Herbert lol if you expect that then you’ll be very disappointed
Colin been waiting for Herbert to peak for years
Nix isnt close to Herbert
I don't believe Nix has reached his ceiling. There were a lot of small things in this game that Nix can clean up to up his game. He is still growing in the NFL. His pocket presence and awareness were ELITE in this last game, he just needs to settle down and set his feet in the pocket. Pocket passing is something all NFL QBs develop over their careers. Nix isn't done yet. I think we will see him improve over the coming games and seasons.
I was never a fan of Nix. He's never going to be a great QB.
Nix is never gonna be the reason the Broncos win games, he can, not be the reason they lose.
Nix has a good mentality and I like him as a dude. However, Bo gets out played constantly by other QBs. He is mid.
You mean Sean Peyton and Bo Nix are not going to the Super Bowl this year? Really? 😂
Cmon man, how long has Herbert been in the league? everyone was about to throw him to the wolves. Bo is in his second year, lets keep the same energy fella's
One sentence "Wow it's incredible to see QBs like Dan Jones and Baker Mayfield develop and become top notch QBs it shows that it takes time to develop QBs teams need to be patient" then another sentence "Bo in his second year is who he is and will not improve". These one take guys are the worst. Anything for clicks.
Look in my opinion the issue is that we cant get into any type of rhythm bc we cant run block very well, the play calling to me seems disjointed l, and bo nix is not making accurate throws
Colin, now you’re saying Bo Nix has “hit his ceiling”? That’s the same tired line journalists were throwing out two years ago. He’s a rookie — he hasn’t even scratched the surface yet. Peyton Manning threw 28 interceptions his first year, and nobody said that was his ceiling. Meanwhile, Justin Herbert has been in the NFL for over six years. Of course he looks more polished — he’s had time to grow at this level. Bo’s still learning, and Sean Payton is one of the best coaches to guide him. Feels like you’re just jumping on the bandwagon for clicks instead of giving real analysis. I really liked listening to your takes but this podcast was herendous.
Colin thank the Lord you are not in leadership . Dang you change your mind more than any broadcaster I listen too. Good grief you form assessments way too early based off your theories. Good grief let people with talent develop a little. Good grief.
Cooled on the Broncos with the QUICKNESS 🤣🤣🤣
I said it last year, Nix will be exposed.
Nix is a slow starter, and working his way through some typical Year 2 struggles when teams already have tape on you, etc. Best to re-visit in 90 days…
