🔴LIVE 🔴St Louis Cardinals vs San Francisco Giants /September 23 /MLB THE SHOW 25

got on the show. It’s the St. Louis Cardinals taking on the San Francisco Giants. First pitch coming at you right after the break. [Music] San Francisco Giants. [Applause] All right, first pitch coming up and towing the slab in this one, Justin Verlander. And as usual with him singing, I think we can expect plenty of strikeouts. Yeah, Boog. He’s racked up over 3,000 strikeouts in his career. So, expect to see more of the same in this one. All right, ready to go here. Here’s the left fielder, Lars Nbar. Lars Nbar. There’s a swing and a drive that’s backed down into McCovby Cole and gone. What a shot. The first batter of the game leaves the yard and they jump out front. It’s one- nothing. One pitch, one swing, one home run. Yeah, you could say that’s efficiency right there. Didn’t need much time in the box to make an impact. Oh, so much for settling into this game, Boo. No courtesy. First pitch take right there. He was ready from the second he stepped into the box, got a pitch to hit, jumped all over. I tell you what, that’ll fire up the guys in your dugout. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. That’s in there. That’s strike one. [Applause] comes up empty. That’s strike two. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. That one not close and the count is one and two. That’s inside just off the outside part of the plate. Really good take, especially with two strikes. And down on strikes he goes. And that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Well, just excellent location on that inside fast ball. Really locked him up. And as a hitter, it’s not typically what you’re looking for. You’re trying to protect away and then in. So, you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes. It’s hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball, but either way, that’s a really nice pitch. One out. Base is empty. And that one wrapped foul. Hit in the air left field. Ramos on the move. Puts it away for the out. Out number two. Take a look at the lineup. Singy. This righty heavy lineup is a bit unusual against a right-handed pitcher. Yeah, Boo. Certainly bucks the old conventional wisdom and I’m not sure I see the vision from the manager on this one. You’re not exactly putting your players in the best situation to succeed when you roll out a lineup like this. Maybe they’ve seen something on video that tells them there’s a weakness to exploit. Perhaps that’s it. Nolan Aronado in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Pitch misses there and it’s one and one. Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout in the dirt. Two and one. Pop foul out of play off to the right. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Two two on the way. That one missed. This guy at the dish excels in two strike counts. Got to be careful with him out there on the mound. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck way back there. Makes the catch up against the wall. Cards on the board first with this solo blast. It’s now one- nothing. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here in San Francisco and towing the slab in this one, Michael McGrevy. What do we have on him? Well, what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season. So when you consider consistency, the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners, that’s critical in winning games today, especially when teams are depending on the big swing, the home run to win ball games. Hauls it in for the out. Now we take a peek at the Giants lineup. Singing the numbers tell us this is an offense designed to swing it. They’re not going to force a ton of action on the bases. And so obviously that is one of the focal points that we’ll look at. And you look at the quality of the at bats because of the fact that the legs aren’t a part of this game. They have to be very selective. Look for long pitch counts, grinding out at bats, and really barrels to the baseball because it’s a lot easier to jog around the bases than for these players to sprint. Rafael Des batting with one down, takes a strike. Swinging a foul out of play. That misses one and two to count. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. And now two and two. He really committed to that fast ball up at the top of the zone. He knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, he gets hit hard by a power guy like this. This one could be trouble. around first and hustling for second. Not stopping. He’s going for three. The relay throw and he’s out. Absolutely perfect execution of the relay right there to cut him down at third. And he probably should have shut it down at second base and been happy with the double, but it took a great play to get him. You just have to tip your cap. Two outs. Space is empty. Willie Adamus stands in. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. And that gives M Chapman a chance to hit with two out. Now it’s Matt Chapman. Matt Chapman pitches in for a strike. 0 and one. Adamus off of first with two away. That’s a little high. One and one. hit hard on the ground is short. And that is that one left for San Francisco. They’re down one- nothing. Back here at Oracle Park. Second inning set to go. And now the shorts stop. Thomas Sajay-Z. Verlander back to work. Just missed. Sajay-Z 22 years old and he was a fifthround pick in 2020. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. And they count. One and two. Next offering misses down and away. That one off the mark. Full countdown. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle. And you get it right where you want it. That one ripped back there and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. Round second. digging for third and he’s got a leadoff triple. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Runner at third. Nobody out at the plate. Pedro Pahes. Right through there for a strike. Runner at third here. Nobody out. Come on, Giants. And there’s a rocket into the outfield. Runner from third comes across and they take a two-run lead. Throws to second, but he’s in there easily. That’s two consecutive extra base hits for this team. Really good swing right there. You got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Jordan Walker now at the plate. First pitch and he just misses. Fouled off. He was late. One on. Nobody out. A run in here in the top of the second. And a rope into center field. Base hit. And they’re at the corners with nobody out. That’s now three hits in a row for the offense. Just a cookie down the middle. I mean, those are the ones you dream about. Ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game. Right down the middle. Not a whole lot of velocity. Right on top of it. So runners at the corners, nobody out. Fine getting hard hit left field. Base hit. Runner in from third to extend their lead. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. And he met it out front for the line drive knock. Victor Scott will hit next. here. Shortened a bunt and missed it. 0 and one. No outs. Runners at first and second. [Applause] And that one lifted in the air center field. Gilbert makes the grab. One down. [Applause] Now batting left fielder Lars Nar. Back to the top of the lineup. Lars Nbar. Next up for the Cardinals. He’s already homered here in this one. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. on the ground to first. Could be two to Adamus. That’s one return throw to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. They put two on the board. Four hits, no errors, and a runner left. Now to the bottom of the second. It’s the Cardinals three and the Giants nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the second. And digging in for San Francisco, Bryce Eldridge. Bryce Eldridge. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. A three-0 lead is great, but you can’t get too comfortable. Got to stay aggressive, keep attacking hitters, try to cruise through this ball game. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball one. Freddy Ferguson behind the dish calling the balls in strikes. Here’s a 1-1. That one is absolutely belted. And in one hops the wall, batting six, Casey Schmidt. The next to hit. Schmidt. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. [Music] Eldridge aboard here at first with nobody out. lifted in the air right center field. Walker makes the grab and there’s one away. Fatty seven catcher Patrick Bailey. Patrick Bailey the next Giant to hit singing when the year’s over he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season and first offering is fouled off and that’s a strike. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Fouls it back with two strikes. Man at first, one away. This one in the dirt. Swang and a miss. Struck him out. Two out. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years. With all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So, very difficult to get the barrel on it. That’s a ball. One- one. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] Misses inside. Two balls, two strikes. Fly ball down the line, stretches out and holds it in. So the Giants leave one. They trail it here 3 nothing. Onto the third inning now. The number two hitter, Ivon Herrera. Von Herrera. First pitch misses. And that drops in for a strike. And strike two. Two strikes to a guy who’s already 0 for one with the punch out. the only guy in the lineup with that strikeout. But you can’t get too relaxed. You still got to make good pitches to get him out. And that’s a little bit high. And the count’s even at two. Grounds one to short. Adamus the throw to first. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. Up next for the Cardinals, first base, Alec Burlington. Alec Burlson next up for the Cardinals. fly to left his first time in there and it’s 0 and one and it goes just foul the pitch. And that skips in the dirt. Fights that one away. Still one and two. So glad these ballparks have installed the netting to protect the fans, keep things safer all around the league. Line to left. Ramos pulls that one down. Two up, two down. Now that third base two down, base is empty. Here’s Nolan Aronado. Fly to left his first time. Way outside and that is ball one. Two outs. Base is empty. Giants and now two and nothing. [Music] on the ground to short Adamus the throw to first and they get Aronado for the out and it’s a one two3 inning. Nothing doing there for St. Louis but they lead it three nothing. Bottom of the inning and digging in for San Francisco, Drew Gilbert. Drew Gilbert and first offering is fouled off. Just missed. One and one. Next pitch is outside center field. Scott settles underneath it. One down. Come on. Now batting left fieldielder. Back to the leadoff spot in the Giants lineup. Here’s Elliot Ramos 0 for one so far. And a strike on the outside edge. First pitch strike right there for him. He’s going to have to do that consistently if he’s going to give any length to his skipper. There’s a strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. line drive rip down the left side towards the left field corner. Now he’ll turn for second and he’ll pull in there with a standup double. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Absolutely hammered that baseball. Very loud coming off the bat. 107 was the exit velocity. And at that speed, it’s going to be a great result more often than not. Now it’s Devers at the plate. De’s the babyfaced assassin. [Applause] This one smoked could be trouble and that’s going to get into the corner. The run comes in from second and it’s now a two-run game. He’s in with a double and that’s his second double of the night. Well, that’s a lonely feeling for an outfielder. The read wasn’t great and it really hurts when it cost your team a run. [Applause] One out, runner at second. And up next for San Francisco, Willie Adamus [Applause] right through there for a strike. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit liner and oh that got him. Still able to get it there in time and they do get the out. That comebacker got him down low and you can really see him favoring the leg. That’s his plant leg which might be a concern, Chris. Yeah, you hope he’s got some feeling in that leg so he can land on it like you said, but from the way he’s acting out there, I think it looks like he’s going to be okay and try to continue. Boo. And here is Matt Chapman. He’s 0 for one. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Just missed. Next offering is fouled back. Des third with two out. Squirts away a little bit and the runner holds. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and a hitter count. Bryce Eldridge in the OD circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And that one fouled off. [Music] [Applause] That’s a base hit. Run scores. Well, back within one as he brings home the run. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. And up next for the Giants, Bryce Eldridge. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Fought off foul. [Applause] Cut on and lifted in the air. Nbar makes the catch and that is the third out of the inning. They get two runs on three hits. No errors and one left. On to inning number four. It’s the Cardinals three and the Giants two. And we’re back and the batter will be the shortstop. Thomas Sajay. The shorts stop takes a ball. You know, these Cardinals showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already scored. On top of that, they forced this starter to throw more pitches than he wanted to at this point of the game. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved. This one swung on and hit well way back there into the bleachers and gone. Home run and they add to their lead. It’s 4-2. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spit on some other pitches in this at bat. was very patient and it paid off. Now the catcher up to hit Pedro Pahes and first offering is fouled off. That one drifts inside. hit pretty well in the air out to center. Gilbert pulls it in and there’s one away. Now batting right fielder Jordan Walker. Now at the plate, Jordan Walker one for one with a single so far. Just off the outside edge. Ball one. Swing and a miss. Strike one. One and one. Slapped foul. down the line and that drops foul. Swing and a ball lifted in the air right field. He just missed it. That’s right. Hauls it in for the out. Jose Fairmine next up for the Cardinals. RBI single his last time up. That misses the zone. Ball one. That clips the inside corner for a strike. Tap foul at the plate. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Bows it off. Still one and two. Two outs. swing and a ball hammered left field raging back towards the wall. Feeling for the wall as he makes the catch, but the solo shot stretches their lead even further. It’s now 42. Back here in San Francisco, John Chabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Casey Schmidt. You got nothing. That finds the mark on the inside corner. Well, these Giants doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. And the sweeper misses for a ball. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. That was pretty nasty. And here is Patrick Bailey. He struck out swinging at his first at bat. Belly. [Music] Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That cliffs a corner. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. No, that was a pretty poor at bat. He just never got the bat off of his shoulder. I mean, you got to go up there looking to swing at some point, especially once you’re down 02. And at that point, make an adjustment, look to put the ball in play if it’s anywhere close. And I’m just not sure what the plan was there. And now the right fielder, Harrar and Kasion. There’s the strike. Two down. Nobody on. Foul ball there. One, two. That’s off the inside corner. It’s two and two. That’s a ball. Tried to attack with a sweeper. [Applause] Foul ball and it remains a full count. [Music] Swing and a miss for the strikeout. and he strikes out the side here in the fourth. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. Back here at Oracle Park all set for the start of the inning and stepping in for the Cardinals, Victor Scott. Verlander back to work and the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. Signs of movement in the Giants bullpen. Trevor McDonald getting loose out there. Tang also getting ready. That one fouled off. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. [Music] Giants. And foul ball. at a swing and a line drive at a right field and Carnosion makes the grab and there’s one down. Now batting leftielder. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Verlander done in this one and it’s going to be a start that he’d like to get a redo on. Not his best. Back with a new arm in a minute. Matt Gage gets handed the rock out of the pen and they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think that’s a good move. I know. I never liked when opposing teams did that to me. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man, Lars Nbar. He’s already homerred in this game. Check swing and he went. That’s strike one. Gage 32 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. [Music] And it’s fouled away. Next pitch misses and the count one and two and that just misses. Two and two. Ground ball to the right side. Steps on first for the out. Good armside run to that same side hitter right there. very difficult to put that ball in the air or get through. It just bores in on the hands. So now here’s the DH Ivon Herrera liner and that should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second. Not stopping, he’s going for three and he’s got himself a triple. waste no time there. Put a really nice balanced swing on it. And when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box. And he’ll feel real good about that one. Alec Burlson digs in now. Bowl for two in this one. Going one. Two outs and a runner at third. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Music] swinging at a highf fly ball to left. Ramos gets under it and puts the squeeze on that one. And that is that one hit in the inning, but nothing more than that. Last half of the fifth coming up, it’s the Cardinals four and the Giants two. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the center fielder Drew Gilbert. Drew Gilbert. First offering and it just misses. Well, these Giants from what we’ve seen, I think it’s fair to wonder if they’ve been too patient at the plate. Sometimes it’s a good thing, but today they’re continuing to fall behind in the count and that’s adding a ton of pressure to their offense. Swaging a miss as he was late. Two and one’s the count. Outside low now. Three and one. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. Now a check swing on three and one. Appeal to third. No, he held back. That’s ball four. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Now the left fielder Elliot Ramos one for two. In for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Gilbert gets his lead at first with nobody out and that is out of play with two strikes. may see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. And a foul ball. He stays alive. [Applause] And that’s downstairs and outside. Way to lay off that pitch down. [Applause] popped up to the left into foul ground. He’s under it and there’s one down. Now batting designated hitter Raphael De. Divers now definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. [Applause] and he swings and lifts one to deep center field on the warning track and hauls it in. That was just a great jump and route to the ball. Well, it had to be if he was going to cover all that ground and bring in that sinking liner. That’s the way it had to be done. Nice job. Now batting Willie Adam the next Giant to hit. [Applause] McGrevy checks the runner and he’s back safely. San Francisco right through there for a strike. San Francisco. And that’s in there at the knees. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. And a weak ground ball to the left side. That ends the inning. No runs on no hits, no errors, and one man left. Five innings complete. It’s the Cardinals four and the Giants two. Top of the sixth inning. Here’s Nolan Aronado. Nolan Aronado at the plate. Aronado guy who delivers big time power at the dish and will probably go down as one of the greatest defensive third baseman of all time. Hammered base hit. Had a good start to the inning. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. Thomas Sajay-Z next up for the Cardinals. He swings and misses at the first pitch. 0 and one. And speaking of that defense, it’s hard to imagine that in high school, Aronado shared the left side of the infield with another elite defender, Matt Chapman at El Toro High School in California. Next offering is down low and one and one. [Music] The kick and the pitch. Runner goes, cut on and miss. Throw to second tag and they got him. Well, I think that was a hit and run right there. When you look at how far that pitch was out of the zone, and the hitter still trying to put wood on it, put it in play, that tells you that they had something going. But unfortunately, it was a good job of execution by the pitcher and the catcher to get that out of the zone and then throw out the runner at second base. Really nice job behind the dish. Goes down swinging for the strikeout. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Just a mid90s challenge fast ball right there. Not much to it. And I’m sure he’d love another swing at it because it was in a very hitable location. Those are the swings where you can sometimes start to question yourself as a hitter and say, “How’d I miss that?” But you know what happens. Pes in the box now as he leaves that one up high line and caught at third by Chapman. The Gold Glover makes the play. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. It’s the Cardinals four and the Giants two. And we’re back. Well, we go bottom six now. The Giants four hitter Matt Chapman. And when you talk about elite defensive third baseman, this guy is at the top of the list. Popped up left side to Jay-Z under it. One up, one down. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Giants [Applause] in the air right field. Walker under it, squeezes it. Two away. Now batting Casey Schmidt, the next Giant to hit in there for strike one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Kyle Ley up and throwing. Alcala warming up as well. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth. [Music] That missed by a lot. Now one and two. Caught him looking for the K. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Cardinals four and the Giants two. They hand the ball over to a new arm number 63. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. And here is Jordan Walker taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Come on, Giants. And another ball out to short. Adamus slings to first and they get the leadoff hitter in the seventh. Up next for the Cardinals, second base Jose Fermine. So digging in, Josemine. Come on, Giants. And that’s in for a strike. 0 and one. Activity in the bullpen. Trevor McDonald up and loosening in the pen. Tang getting loose as well. Base is empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. Giants. bunted back towards the pitcher to first and a couple of quick outs. Now center Victor Scott is second. Two outs. Base is empty. Here’s the center fielder Victor Scott. This is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. Trying to bunt his way on. Bare hand has to hurry. Not in time. He’s safe. Nearly a highlight reel play at third, but the bare hand grab still wasn’t enough to get the out. Great effort to make that play as close as it was, though. Now batting. Here’s the left fielder, Lars Nbar. He had a big swing for these guys way back in the first inning. Yeah, Boo. He didn’t waste any time in this one. The solo shot really got his team going and he’s looking for more right here. Giant pickoff throw and he dives back in safely. I was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense, especially at a premier position. And that’s what he does. He was late there. Strike one. The hitting’s going to come around. He’s going to figure it out. But right now, his big asset is the way he plays the game on defense. Outside and the count is one and one. one. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. Scott off of first with two away. [Applause] Strike him out. swing and a high-fly ball right field. Gilbert sizes this one up. Nabs it and that’ll do it. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. Midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch. It’s the Cardinals four and the Giants two. Now pitching. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Kyle Ley. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Patrick Bailey now at the plate, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. There’s a strike. No ball. One strike. Ball one there. One. Line drive and that’s a base hit to right. So, a man on base to start the inning. [Applause] Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. Harrar and Kronosion will hit next. Ball one, no strikes. Now, these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. The tying run at the plate. Swinging a foul out of play [Music] with the tying run at the plate here in the bottom of the seventh. Come on. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. You got this. In the air, pretty deep out to center field. Scott has this one sized up. pulls it down and he makes the catch and there’s one away. Now batting center fielder Drew Gilbert. So up next, Drew Gilbert [Music] [Applause] gets the slider in there for a strike. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit. And he chases a high fast ball there. Just misses there. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. swing and he breaks his bat. Fine. And no throw for some reason as he reaches first. That’s got to be an error. Elliot Ramos to the plate now with a chance to come up big. One for three. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. Check swing. No appeal and it’s one and0. Whoa. Recognize that pitch just in time. Able to keep those hands back. And that’s outside. And now two and 0. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. And a foul ball makes the count. Two and one. grounder might be two. He’s in there. Oh, just a nice job coming through in a pretty high lever spot right there. Really important at bat coming up now. Here comes the manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Kyle Ley out of the game. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Jojo Romero into the game. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. High leverage spot. And here comes the dangerous Raphael Des. Golden opportunity right here on the corner for a strike. Going one. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. [Applause] All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate. That’s a strike. 0 and two now. He’s trying to stay away from this lefty knowing that a lot of left-handers like the ball down and in. [Applause] So the tying run at second and Rafy falls victim to the K. Well, that right there is just a pitcher’s pitch. Tailing away from the hitter, low and away with some good action at the end. You know, even if he gets the bat to that ball, it’s probably just a weak ground ball to the opposite side. I tell you what, that’s a tremendous two- strike pitch. Will Adamus to the plate now at a high leverage spot. And that drops in for a strike. Big spot. Two out. Both the tying and go ahead runs are aboard. Skips in and excellent work to corral that one. Could have been dangerous. Come on. [Applause] Close one. Doesn’t get the call and it’s two and one. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. [Applause] Swinging a drive deep right field. That’s got a chance. reaching for it and brings it in. Giants leave him loaded. Still down by a count of four to two. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Kai 10. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Ivon Herrera getting ready to hit. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one. And that one missing low. Tang, the tall righty, 26 years old, and he’s a native of Taiwan. And another ball. And a foul ball. Giants. Check. Swing. Called. Strike. Line drive and foul ball. That one in the dirt and a full countdown. Got a full count. Swing and a ball popped up. Eldridge should have this one. And there’s one down. [Music] Now batting first Alec Berles. And now the first baseman Alec Burlson. 0 for three in this one. And first offering is fouled off. And that one fouled off. [Music] Come on. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now two away. I think he might have gotten away with one right there. That was a very hitable pitch right over the heart of the plate. And I know that batter is kicking himself right now. Would like to get that pitch again. Just pulled the string on it and the deception gets him the K. Aronado stands in here. Leaves that one off the inside. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the eighth. up and in and the count is two and0. Giants. Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. And that one in the air center field. Gilbert moving under this one. Makes the grab and that’s the inning. Three up, three down for him there. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Cardinals four and the Giants two. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Jorge Alcala. Well, he’s had trouble at times keeping the ball in the park this season. Something to keep in mind here. And here is Matt Chapman. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So, when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. next offering is in for a strike. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. Pitch is in the dirt. Going to count one and two. [Applause] swings through that and it’s a strike out and a key out leading off the bottom of the eighth. Oh, you got to be pretty quick with the bat speed these days. So many guys throwing in the upper 90s and you see the velocity on that one. Just tough to catch up to. I mean, guys are coming in and they’re going max effort. They’re not looking to go a long distance. They want to get as many strikeouts as they possibly can. Now, here is Bryce Eldridge. [Applause] The Cards holding on to a two-run lead here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Just missed. [Music] And that misses. And that’s ball three. You see the velocity 97 with that fast ball in there for a strike at the top of the zone. [Music] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Applause] battling here as he fouls it away. [Music] Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Unbelievable. And Aronado makes the catch. Two down. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. Here’s the second baseman, Casey Schmidt. Sliced hard but foul. Two outs. No, that’s it. He never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Gets a piece and stays alive. Looking very settled on the mound here in the eighth. One more out. They’ll probably hand it off to their closer for the ninth with at least a two-run lead in the air to left center. Nbar sizing this one up and he makes the catch and the inning is over. So they make short work of him there. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the Cardinals four and the Giants two. We go to the ninth. Now it’s the shortstop Thomas Sajayzi. Tang back to work and a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Spencer Bivvens the right-handed sinker baller. He looks to be readying himself. Number 77 also throwing on the ground to first and he takes it himself for the out. Now batting catcher Pedro Pah. And now the Cardinals catcher Pedro Pahes. That misses and that’s ball one. Base is empty, one away. You’re in the top of the ninth. [Applause] Next pitch is downstairs. And there’s a foul ball. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Back to right. Nobody can get there and it’s a foul ball. swing and a miss and he struck him out and there’s two away. He had him out in front which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. [Applause] Hit in the air right field and Carnacion on his way in. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out and that is that. Three up, three down. that time. Bottom part of the order, 789, two up in inning number nine. It’s the Cardinals four and the Giants two. John King comes on trying to close it out. A chance at his first save of the year. Number 47, John King. And here’s the catcher, Patrick Bailey. This guy, one of the best defensive catchers going. You talk about framing, the ability to block, catch, and throw. He is at the top of the game and that’s in the dirt and that is ball one. Really good athlete and many times we talk about, you know, the feet of infielders. This catcher as well, really quick feet. He’s able to recognize the pitch, see the trajectory, and get into a spot where he can block those balls and keep them from going to the back stop. Swang and a miss. There’s that change up. Really impressive with the way he frames, the way that he sets it up because sometimes those pitches are off the plate, but because he sets up and presents it so well, he steals strikes for his pitcher [Applause] on the ground right side. And that’s just foul. [Music] That’s to third, Aronado. Get throws across the diamond and the leadoff man retired here in the ninth. Up next for the Giants, right fielder Gerard. Now it’s the right fielder Herrarion. 0 for three with two flyouts at a strikeout. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. That one outside. And now it’s even one and one. And foul ball. One down. Face is empty. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. [Applause] And that one off the inside edge. He walked him. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. They’re not ready to go home quite yet. next for the job. And now the center fielder, Drew Gilbert. You got the number nine hole hitter right here looking to do whatever he can to get on base, turn this lineup over so the best hitters in this lineup have a chance to tie up the ball game or maybe even walk it off. Tying run at the plate. Not even close there. And it’s one and one. [Applause] and misses inside. Oh, an interesting situation. One swing, you can tie up the ball game. But if you’re patient and work a walk, then you bring the game-winning run to the plate. That one misses and the count is three and one. On this count, runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo. [Applause] And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s a full count. As a hitter, you don’t know what to expect here in the 3-2. If he’ll throw a breaking ball 3-1, he’ll do it again. 3-2. Line drive to short and caught. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. One out left for the Giants. Now the left fielder, Elliot Ramos. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. Giants. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and one. Two-run game with two away here in the bottom of the ninth. Bounce to third, but a kicks foul. King is just one strike away. Breaking ball misses down and away. [Music] Next pitch is outside. That turns out to be a really good take right there. But you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again [Applause] inside. Almost got him. Big pitch coming right here. Last thing he wants to do is put the tying run on base, but he can’t groove one either. With the tying run at the plate there, the home team trying to pull it out. left field way back there. That’s down. One hops off the wall. Coming home. He’ll score easily. Comes through with the RBI. That ball was drilled. 106 off the bat. And that’s the kind of feedback that tells you you’re right where you want to be with your swing mechanics. Now a huge at bat in this game coming up. manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. John King departs and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. So, they bring on the veteran Sunny Gray. This guy’s a strikethrower. He’s done an excellent job of avoiding walks so far this season. Raphael Devers up to hit trying to deliver as the hero. [Applause] And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. [Applause] So the tying run at second popped up. Fine settles under it. He’s got it. Ball game. And the Cardinals hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill. somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save.
